[Q] Google Voice after update - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

I'm starting a new thread for this as it looks like the original update thread is not the best place to ask. As with other Turbo owners, the recent update broke my phone's ability to use Google Voice for my voicemail. Anyone know of a fix for this? Thanks in advance.

Yep, this happened to me as well. My only solution was to uninstall it, then reinstall, and go through the process of setting it up again. I also deleted it off of the Google Voice web interface as well. When you re-add it they ask you to confirm it, then you go through a few steps which involves dialing a string of numbers to set it all up again. I had no voicemail for a couple days before I realized it was broken. Can confirm it is working again after starting from scratch on the setup.

Just noticed the issue when I read about it here. I uninstalled Google Voice from my device and then reinstalled it and reconfigured. Seems to work now...

Thank you both! Works fine now.

I just had to reforward it with *71.
Not a problem.

I've done the forwarding and set up thru google voice, then opt in for Hangouts to manage it

Enabling Advanced Calling gets rid of any call forwarding you set up. That's why your voicemail stopped working. All you should have to do is set up your call forwarding again and it should work.
As a side note, disabling Advanced Calling also resets call forwarding. VoLTE doesn't work great for me, as I don't have a reliable LTE signal at home. So, I disabled it and discovered my old calling forwarding settings didn't come back.

I have GV "working" again....however, when a number is forwarded to GV (because I choose not to answer), it rings FOREVER before GV picks up. It used to be an immediate pickup prior to the update.

This is still an issue for me, I keep reforwarding my calls and they don't stay forwarded. It seems like it's just a couple hours before it resets.

No.

FWIW I just signed up to Verizon and got a Droid turbo for myself and a note 4 for my fiancé. I couldn't get Google voice to configure at all, on the Note it works flawlessly. So now I have a note. The techs there were obviously baffled. I'd still have the turbo if it wasn't for lack of GV.

Clear data/cache and reinstall/reconfigure. Haven't had any problems since I did that after the update. Didn't have any problems before the update either.

No one likes to use the hangouts for Google voice? Download the hangouts dialer and you're all set. Oh, go to settings and select ring this device for calls.

How I was doing it was I set GV to to make and answer all calls. It'll attempt to ring then give up. I'm going back to Verizon tonight. I like the Note 4 but it is pretty big. The only thing other than the turbo that I like is the Xperia z3v. I don't mind the incrementally weaker hardware paired with a 1080p screen. Waterproof is also a big plus.

Any one having trouble getting there Google voice to work on the captivate
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
No problems here, working great.
Mine works great, although it took me FOREVER to get it to work correctly and set up.
Also I notice the speaker volume when trying to play messages through speaker phone is horribly low.
Yeah I had problems at first. I got a phone number with my name in it, but it didn't have a location and no one could call me. I had to pay 10$ to switch my number to a local one but its all good now.
Also, doesn't make calls on my wifi b/c internet keeps dropping, but I don't blame it. My wifi sucks.
You have to go on the google voice website and activate it

Same here, the message volume is so low you really cant hear it. Other than that everything works for me.
Wrong person when hit voice mail...
I've posted this question in Google's Help area, but I almost never get replies on messages there. Trying here.
When someone forwards to voicemail (Google VM), the recorded name that plays is not mine. I have recorded my name again; played it back on the WEB, and it is me; but if I dial my phone and go to VM it is a different person that says the recorded name. To answer the first obvious question, I am sure we are using the right number
I did see in the Google help section that someone fixed that problem by disabling Google Voice on their phone and re-enabling it.
Interestingly, I do have the Voice Mail Carrier in my phone set to 'My Carrier', which would be AT&T. I"m not sure of the significance of changing that. My presumption is that if it rings long enough it may go to AT&T voice mail instead of Google Voice mail. But in the end, I don't believe that has anything to do with my problem.
But even though I don't think this is part of my problem, I did try to set in my phone to send voice mail to Google Voice. When it went to the network it comes back with message "Voicemail number change unsuccessful. Please contact yoru carrier if this problem persists."
I guess if I can come up wiht correct settings that will be helpful. Everything I find in the Google help for setup is about setting it up on the web, and not the phone.
Later I found that you can enable/disable Google Voice Mail on your phone from the Google Voice Mail web site by dialing numbers into your phone. I have tried that twice now, and it still is playing the wrong name . ( I am confused about the setting mentioned above on the phone).
So, any suggestions on clearing up this problem?

AGREED! I can't stand the volume of the voicemail!!!
On my post for my problem(above a couple posts), from Google Help Group, I had someone select it as "Answered", and pointed it to a long list of questions, but no answer. I think they must be trying to rack up "I answered it" points or something.
GV seems to be pretty buggy. I may abandon it.
Well, I find using Google Products can be very frustrating. Zero support from Google, and if it is something the community has no idea how to fix, you are SOL.
Not getting any answers on this anywhere.
I had the same problem when setting up my Aria, before I got my Captivate. It would not change the forwarding numbers. I had to change the forwarding number manually on the phone. Settings > Call Settings > Voice Calls > Call Forwarding. (When I got the Captivate I did not have to set up again, AT&T stores the forwarding settings) It also took me a while to get it straight between the difference of the number I forward to, and the number I call when I want to listen.
All in all I thought the Google Voice was a pain to set up, and not as easy to set up as I expected for a Google product. But it does offer features that the iPhone Visual Voicemail did not, like transcribing the message, etc.
I actually would like to use some of the features. But I am pretty frustrated with the bugs. Well, at least, this one bug that I can't get an answer on.
Another bug I experienced, assuming I understand correctly, is that if a 'known' contact calls, it won't ask for the name. But I found the same contact calling me during testing would experienced inconsistently that it would, or would not ask.
If I can just get the darned other person's name from being played when it goes to VM, I'll be able to experiment more.
Oh, one other thing that is happening. Today, I called my Google number, just to see if it had possibly corrected itself. Interestingly it also ran my home phone too, which I had turned off.
So, it just seems not ready for prime time.

[Q] Google Voice

So here's my story. A couple of weeks back I had started to notice that my phone wasn't ringing when people were calling me. Through a bunch of troubleshooting found out that it seems to be my google voice account that is causing my calls to go directly to google voice. I also use google voice on my tablet as it is a lot nicer to do stuff on the bigger screen. When i looked under the settings found there was something about (Sorry this is weird) "dogfood" settings. When i clicked on it it said something about sending feedback. I backed out from there. (A little freaked out as to what that might do.) Did not have this "setting" on the phone. Needless to say I un-installed wiped the tablet. Did the same with the hero. Put new roms on both and I would be able to receive calls for a short period of time. Then after a couple of calls it would start to send calls to voicemail again and I wouldn't be able to make calls out. So finally took google voice off of both the tablet and phone and disabled google voice and now I can make and receive calls.
My problem is really like google voice and want to use it. Anyway around this? Part of the reason that I'm asking is that I see Matt uses google voice too and was wondering if anyone else had been having this problem. I don't know if there is any other app that works similarly if anyone has any suggestions let me know.
Sorry for the long post but its kinda weird and didn't wanna post "Google voice f-ed my phone" and then have to walk everyone through the troubleshooting I had already done.
Thanks.
OK this is going to sound stupid and quite obvious but..in the phone app> menu>more>settings>do not disturb. Is that off or on?
I have been using G-voice for a while now and I have never had any issues. But I do have that "dogfood" under menu on the phone app.
I remember checking on that a few different times because I remembered reading about it some time ago. I don't think that was it. It seems like someone was having trouble with that on the with the aosp/cm thread a long time ago. I was concerned with that dogfood thing but maybe it is nothing. just google having fun.
I will check on the settings thing and flash to DX and test some more.
Thanks for the info. Will let you know.

I have a good question... When you installed Google Voice at the setup screen did you hit Next at the first screen that mentions Sprint integration? This is most likely what is causing it sir. Try reinstalling GV. Then open it. When that prompt comes up again hit Skip this time. Then following the remaining instructions. It should work perfectly after this.
It sounds like an initial setup issue. I would reinstall the application again. I've been using GV without any issues.
Actually got it working sorry for not posting back. After formatting boot, system, etc. It started working correctly. Must have been something that wasn't getting erased during the normal wiping between roms.
Google Voice issues.
I too had similar problems and finally thought of going into my actual Google account and changing how Google voice handles my calls. Works ever since I did that.

I don't know how many times I had to re-install GV on my and my friends' phones before remembering that trying to integrate with Sprint's Visual Voicemail just doesn't work..

You can integrate, but you might need to go into the actual account (not the app) and make sure that it is set up not to ring to the phone and not the internet number (or whatever that option is). My issue, besides every text message going through GV, was that I couldn't make an international call. I had a credit but it would never go through AND I couldn't make a call without it using GV even when I told it not to. Maybe I should have tried to go into the account to check on that too? LOL I went back to just using GV as my voicemail.
They fubarred this whole integration. In theory it sounded good but update after update they still don't get it.

This is a known GV issue across devices, I know people have had this problem on the S3, so no it's not your rom.
Sent from my S3 on Sense 5 (you jelly?)
This is not only an issue with gv, this happens from android to android or from android to iPhone regardless of having or using gv. I tested with other android phones, I phones, and multiple SMS apps, anything after the @ is dropped for some reason
I set up G Voice integration, and now when i get a call and my laptop is logged into Gmail, the call rings on the computer first, and only at the end does it ring on the phone. Is there any way to disable this, and have it just ring on the phone only... Or is this a by-product of having my Sprint number as my G Voice #? I unchecked forward to Google Chat in my G Voice settings on the laptop...
Also, what happens if i do answer via Google Chat on the laptop? Haven't tried that yet lol

If you do answer through Google Chat it will not ring on your phone and it will use your speakers and your mic to answer the call. You will literally answer the call on your laptop.

Correct. It can be a little startling at times, but for the most part the Google Voice/Sprint integration works pretty well. I believe Cyanogenmod is working on a system-level Google Voice integration for receipt/sending via the stock messaging app, but if you can't wait, there's also a good AOSP-styled app called Messaging + Google Voice on the Play Store. I haven't tried it for a while (there was an annoying duplication bug where you'd receive messages twice in the app-- once over carrier, once over Google Voice, but they told me it'd be fixed soon).
Yeah, I'm pretty happy with the integration so far. I'm fine with texting the way it is, i think, because with the integration i already text thru the stock messaging app? And i like receiving texts to that number on my other phones thru the Google Voice app.... I prefer to know where the text came from lol.

The reason this happens is that Google Voice rings all associated devices, but the ones that are on a faster connection ring first. The computer's network connection is loads faster than Sprint's cell connection. Note that Springs 3/4G is not involved in this comparison.

does this mean that calls are still coming in to the phone thru the cellular phone network, and not data? because that would be one concern for me, as i would think that a cellular phone network would be more reliable than a cellular data network. i could be wrong tho.
and how about with regards to texting... are they still coming over the phone network and not data?
thanks for the info guys! you probably know more than is shared on the Google Voice site itself.

Yes. Phone calls still go to the cellular network, but it is a much slower send than what the internet gets. Same goes for texting from your phone.
You're phone acts as usual, but your computer has a faster connection so it'll get those things first.

ah ok, and do you notice that it takes an extra few seconds to send a call from the phone, after enabling integration, or is it my imagination? maybe it has to get routed somehow?

Google Voice with AT&T Moto X?

Hi all, I'm currently on a GS3 with Verizon and Google Voice integration works well, I. E. Receive calls from GV number as well as using GV for voicemail and transcription (instead of Verizon voicemail).
Are there any gotchas or differences to be aware of in setting up GV with Moto X on AT&T? Or with any phone on AT&T for that matter?
Thanks!

Not really but I would just disable visual voicemail which is preinstalled. Other than that it's no different
No problem for me either. Indeed, you might want to disable/remove/uncheck all AT&T preloaded apps.
Oddly, I see to be having issues with getting Voice to work on my phone. It's not picking up at all as the default voicemail. I've tried uninstalling it and going through the setup again - and the phone still shows that Voice is the voicemail - but the phone will ring forever unless I manually reject the call. Anyone else experiencing this?

Do you have it properly forwarding the call to your google voice number? That needs to be edited in the phone settings.

Yeah, in the phone settings it lists google voice as the voicemail provider.
Just wanted to update - my issue was that when I swapped to this phone, AT&T forgot to enable voicemail to it. So now it's working again.

I had the same issue. I just got off the phone with customer service and they had to put the vm soc back on my account.
Wonder how many other people have the same issue and haven't realized it yet?

Google voice works just fine on my moto x also.
But after 2 years of using google voice; Im finally getting rid of it. Im tired of the MMS headaches. Tired of waiting for google to find a solution.
This may or may not help anyone. But Google voice on all my phones and my nexus 4 worked great for years. Recently my ATT accountgot hhacked and my entire account had to be re provisioned. This defaulted to the newer voicemail service and Googlevoice no longer can register. So instead iI just set all forwarding to my Google voice number and it functions the same way.
Supposedly getting ATT to put me back on the old style voicemail is a difficult task to convincethe reps to do. Take ffor what its worth. This is my nexus 4 too and Google voice just can't register as voicemail for some reason.

verizon voice mail nightmare

im running chroma and want visual voice mail, so I called Verizon and disabled vvm and put on basic, tried setting up google voice no go. figured I had to have vvm turned on so I turned it back on, still didn't work. for the sake of time I disabled vvm again and put it to basic, now im getting the gargled text messages and voice mail notifications idk if itll turn off on its own? maybe it has to process in their system because so many changes?? if I wanted VVM google voice to work is there any easy instructions and should it be set to basic?? it kept saying in setup my account isn't supported when I had it set to google voice.

First, for your issue, from what I've read VVM doesn't play nice with ROM's, need to be stock. I hope I'm incorrect, others likely will chime in ...
I've got the opposite issue, stock N6, not rooted or unlocked yet, and it prompts me to install the VVM app for any VM's I get (bought from VZW), I do not want VVM, and VVM is NOT enabled on my account, never has been.
How might I get my N6 VM notifications to act like I expect, and not an ad for VVM?
i know you can uninstall the Verizon vvm and call them and have it set to basic, I did on my stock phone. but now I want a rom and vvm.

Turn off enhanced LTE on the phone. On your Verizon account disable HD voice and switch to basic voice mail. Obviously you will lose VoLTE but that's the only way to get regular basic voicemail.

I hate to say I don't know how to turn off enhanced LTE on the N6, however, as far as the account goes, I don't have HD voice turned on, nor VoLTE, which is why this is so annoying.
I was on regular basic Voicemail, until I switched to the N6 as an edge upgrade, and hadn't done anything other than have it activated on my line.

You sure it's not set on your account? They probably set it automatically when you activated the new phone. They were calling it advanced calling 1.0 at one point. On the phone go to settings, More, and then cellular networks. If you don't see enhanced LTE there its because it's off on your account and the phone setting doesn't matter.
IMHO I would never give up VoLTE to get basic voicemail but to each his own.
It's also possible something changed in 5.1 but I thought the plain VM indicator worked briefly for me after the 5.0.1 to 5.1 upgrade before I turned VoLTE on.

Nope, not there, never had advanced calling turned on, I had thought about it for both my wife and I, as she has a GS5, but left it for now settling into the N6...
I wouldn't give up VoLTE either just for the VM, but I hadn't yet pulled the trigger on it yet ...
It's not a deal breaker for me, just annoying as all get out, triggers my OCD which all of us here have in regards to their device hehehe.
I suppose I could call a VZ rep and have them look at the account, but truthfully that always worries me whenever one of them are in there ...
If you have any other suggestions, I'm game to listen ...

If you don't have Advanced Calling turned on then you don't have HD Calling nor VoLTE, they are bundled together. Anyway, no further suggestions but good luck
Just to let you know I have my basic voice mail working and I have advanced calling 1.0 turned on and my HD Calling and VoLTE is working.
I had a lot of trouble with Verizon because they couldn't figure out how to turn the visual voice mail off right. took about 10 phone calls to tech support to get it right.
I was getting the gargled text messages and voice mail notifications just like you.
Don't give up just keep calling back till you get somebody who knows what they are doing!
I knew it wasn't the phone or the sim card, I swapped another sim from a different number and the voice mail worked on the nexus 6.
Good luck!
