Did I just brick my phone? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been stupid and tried to follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=57479825#post57479825 but did the first line before noticing that there were several files missing:
mfastboot flash partition gpt.bin
I can't follow the rest as I have most of the files missing, and now whatever I try to do it boots on Fastboot with the message:
version downgraded for boot
failed to validate boot image
Fastboot Reason: Fall-through from normal boot mode
Anyone know how to fix that?

You need to flash back to a full image.

Any idea where I can find it? I come from the Nexus line with all the images on Google's website, I have to admit that now with Moto I'm a bit lost, in addition to being not-that-clever.
It's probably worth noting that it's the uk version of the XT1092.

I found the RETEUALL_XT1092_4.4.4 but still can't do mfastboot flash partition gpt.bin with the 4.4.4 version as it won't let me downgrade the file, as the one that I flashed was the 5.0 one... (version downgraded for primary_gpt)
Is my only option for the official OTA for the XT1092 uk to be available to flash it manually?

[Q] [XT1053] How to get 5.1 back. Already updated once to 5.1

Hello,
Please help me get any OS back to my XT1053 for now. Here's what happened:
1) I unlocked the bootloader, rooted my XT1053, stock recovery. Then last week I tried updating it to 5.1 official version via OTA. It failed due to files mismatch (maybe due to using apps that need root like Adaway). So I downloaded 4.4.4 STOCK version from Moto website, flashed boot.img, system.img and followed all the steps given here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images
Once the phone booted properly into 4.4.4, I tried 5.1 OTA and it worked fine. Then I flashed TWRP and SU to get root (I lost root when I flashed STOCK 4.4.4).
2) Everything was fine except that whenever I rebooted, my phone would Optimize ALL the apps. I Googled a lot and apparently this happened to many folks and there was no solution.
3) Today, I thought I will try and fix it by sideloading the 5.1 OTA zip (I thought the regular OTA style installation that I did of 5.1 over mfastboot style installation of 4.4.4 had something to do with it. I know, this was stupid of me!)
4) So, today I went to TWRP and tried to flash 'Blur_Version.213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US.zip'. I am 100% certain that this was the file that I copied from /cache after OTA had downloaded the file last week and I had saved it locally on PC and in SD on phone. However, this flashing gave me an error saying that it expected either 4.4.4 KXA or 5.1 but that my system was 4.4?? So the flashing failed and my OS is gone. How can I get ANY OS back? Here are the things that I tried so far:
1) Installed RSD Lite and I am downloading XT1053_TMO_RETAIL-US_4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.29.1_2_cid9_CFC_1FF.xml.zip file from http://www.filefactory.com/folder/dd05c058d3ff8dbe/?sort=created&order=DESC&show=100&page=1 as I type this out now. HOWEVER, I think I shouldn't use it as I read KidJoe saying not to downgrade. (KidJoe's comments are here http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-tip-web-sites-official-leaked-roms-t2923347)
2) THEREFORE, I was wondering if I could simply flash a higher or equivalent version of ROM. Since we don't have an official 5.1 flashable zip right now, can I use 5.1.1 by CM? It's present here: http://primehowto.com/install-andro...le-moto-x-xt1053-2013-via-cm12-1-nightly-rom/
3) If yes to point# 2 above, I have a small problem. My phone is not detected by 'adb devices; in TWRP recovery mode. My battery is 11%. Could that be the issue?
I KNOW THIS WAS A LONG POST. I JUST WANTED TO GIVE ALL THE INFO. PLEASE HELP ME GET ANY OS ONTO THE PHONE AND THEN I WILL WAIT FOR THE 5.1 SBF TO BE AVAILABLE. THANKS A LOT IN ADVANCE....

Not recommended, hold on a bit. try to flash only gpt and mboot from your 5.1 update?

No, I didn't try mfastboot of 'gpt' from 5.1 update file 'Blur_Version.213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US.zip'. I don't see an 'mboot' or 'boot' file in it though. I do see 'gpt'. Also, in fastboot mode it says "Charger connected" instead of "USB connected". I think that's due to the low battery too?

Would you know if 'Blur_Version.213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US.zip' file is the OTA 5.1 file? I think that's how the naming convention goes i.e. the name is set to the system version on which it is going to be updated NOT the system version that it will be updated to. I don't know why this flash failed though. I can give you the exact error that I get when I try flashing this if that helps? Thanks!
Shoot the error. If it's security downgrade, again flash gpt and mboot from Ota 5.1.
I will have to verify the name of Ota as its critical info.

When I tried flashing "Blur_Version.213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US.zip" file (which I still think is the OTA 5.1 zip), I get this error:
Package expects build fingerprint of mototola/ghost_retail/ghost:4.4.4/KXA21.12-L1.29.1/2:user/release-keys or motorola/ghost_retail/ghost:5.1/LPA23.12-15/15:user/release-keys; this device has motorola/ghost_retail/ghost:4.4/13.11.1Q2.X-69-3/51:user/release-keys
This is where I got burned today. The above error wiped out my OS. I was on 5.1, I don't know why it says I have 4.4....
Prolly system mismatch, try only gpt and mboot. What error do u get?
---------- Post added at 09:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:17 PM ----------
BTW your post provided good info. So Ota think u on 4.4.
You flashed only syst and boot to get on 4.4 ,could be where the prob is.
Need to know where img/rom info reside.
Double check the 4.4 files you flashed.
Just thinking out loud..

Okay, so I fixed it. At least got an OS for now .. This is what I did.. I took a chance and went ahead with these steps:
1) Extracted files from Stock TMO 4.4.4 file 'TMO_RETAIL_XT1053_4.4.4_213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US_MR4_CFC.tgz' got from Moto website.
2) Modified 'flash.bat' file to have below commands:
SET mfastboot=mfastboot.exe
%mfastboot% getvar max-download-size
%mfastboot% oem fb_mode_set
%mfastboot% flash partition gpt.bin
%mfastboot% flash motoboot motoboot.img
%mfastboot% reboot-bootloader
%mfastboot% flash logo logo.bin
%mfastboot% flash boot boot.img
%mfastboot% flash recovery recovery.img
%mfastboot% flash system system.img
%mfastboot% flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
%mfastboot% erase modemst1
%mfastboot% erase modemst2
%mfastboot% flash fsg fsg.mbn
%mfastboot% erase cache
%mfastboot% reboot
3) It failed with 'partition', 'motoboot', 'logo'. Everything else was successful.
4) My phone booted into 4.4.4 now.
It's funny but I think I have successfully downgraded from 5.1 to 4.4.4... That means, my main system file was never upgraded to 5.1?? It's late and I want a phone for tomorrow so I won't try 5.1 tonight. But it would be great if experts could pitch in. How did I downgrade from 5.1 to 4.4.4?
Anyway, thanks for your help. Your comment about 'gpt' made me think "maybe my phone won't hard brick if I install 4.4.4 again".. and it didn't!
CHEERS!
You can downgrade Fri 5.1 to 4.4 without flashing gpt and mboot. Wait for full 5.1.
Excellent man. Check your bootloader version, it's probably lollipop. So don't take update yet.
I thought we couldn't downgrade without bricking? Anyway, I am getting notification to update to 5.1 via OTA. I'm ignoring until I understand what's happening. So, pls tell me what are the things that I need to check the versions of? Attached is a screenshot from 'About Phone'. How do I check bootloader version? Thanks man..

Many try to skip GPT.BIN and MOTOBOOT.IMG... but when you have a version missmatch (gpt/motoboot from one rom, and rest from another), you increase your chance of bricking should you apply an OTA update zip in the future. And you'll likely end up with features not working or extra "bugs" that wouldn't otherwise appear.
For those who say "its safe to downgrade"... I'll point you to -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-warning-risks-downgrading-impacts-t3058202 and ask you to view the 7 links near the end of the first post as just a few examples.
Hey KidJoe, I could really use your help. I didn't want to downgrade but I had no choice as I couldn't re-install 5.1 (hence created this thread). It's good that I didn't brick when I reverted to 4.4.4 from 5.1 but I am skeptical of taking the 5.1 OTA now.
Pls look at the screen shot that I attached in my previous post. Also, my BL version is 30.BE (sha-34b7ccb, 2015-04-22 12:57:17). I have Stock Recovery KXA21.12-L1.29.1
How can I get a perfect installation of 5.1.. By perfect I mean none of the files left behind in the old version.
Appreciate your help!

Hitdroid, do you mind sharing your 5.1 OTA file for xt1053.
I'm in the same situation as you. Got 5.1 OTA a few weeks ago, rooted it and installed TWRP. Then I accidentally installed my 4.4.4 backup which erased my 5.1 install.
I just installed CM 5.1 as a stopgap but i'd like to return to near stock so i'm following this thread.
as I thought, you have a 5.1 BL.
Gotta flash manually when sbf/ROM is available

Because of your bootloader, the safest way is wait for the 5.1 SBF to be posted (since you have an XT1053, it will be posted on Moto's web site, and you don't have to rely on leaks)... But I have no idea how long that will take.
Now, you could try to take the OTA, but I've seen enough bricks to say.. If it was my phone... I'd wait.
I'm at work so will share the file once I go home. But I think we should wait for 5.1 SBF as @KidJoe and @hbenz2008 have stated.

[Q] fastboot vs mfastboot for flashing factory image?

I found a few tutorials for other motorola devices (Moto G, Moto X 1st gen) that say to make sure you use mfastboot when flashing the factory images. Motorola's own factory image website doesn't seem to say anything about that. I want to flash back to stock for now. I have fastboot configured through the android SDK. Do I need to track down this mfastboot application? And is there any official place to get it? When I search for it all I find are non-motorola sites that are hosting it and I 'd rather download it from the source.

That depends on the version of fastboot installed on the computer. If it's an older version, it won't break it down into sparse chunks. It will fail on older versions.

Yeah, that makes sense cause I have the newer versions on my laptops. I only started using fastboot when I got my Moto X so I don't know a lot about it. Just enough to get me by and get me out of trouble.

Thanks for the clarification. I actually realized now that the fastboot.exe is included in the factory image so I would assume that is the Motorola version.
I'm currently running CM12.1 that I flashed over a stock 5.0 install. I should be safe to flash everything in the factory image, since I'm not downgrading, correct?

When you download the factory image motorola includes its own fastboot. The difference is that Motorola's fastboot can handle the system image file as one while other fastboot require the system image file be broken into sparsechunks.

Well just for the fun of it I tried flashing with fastboot from the SDK and then with mfastboot. Official fastboot split the system image just the mfastboot, it just wasn't quite as verbose as mfastboot.

Moto X 2014, EFS corrupted

Hi,
I flashed my beautiful smartphone with CyanogenMod, then I decided to go back to stock. During this latest step I forgot to backup the EFS folder (I was neither knowing its existence!) and now it is corrupted (in About I have a Baseband unknown). How to fix? Is there a solution? Is there any hacker here??
Thanks a lot

Hi, thanks a lot for your answer.. I have a retde XT1092 and restoring to stock using the Motorola guidelines didn't solve... I opened a thread also in the Motorola forum:

$ fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn

That is the wrong firmware. The xt1095 has a different radio. You need the radio from this file:

Yes I know that URL ! I always restored from there using XT1092, tried with kitkat 5.0 and 5.1 without any success ...
Well if that didn't work, then I assume it is either your PDS partition that is corrupt, or a hardware failure. If you didn't backup your PDS partition there is no hope to fix it yourself. You will have to most likely bring it to a service center to get it fixed.

Moto X 2014 (XT1097 Canada) Wont Boot

Please help, my moto x 2014 wont boot what so ever. This first started from when I tried to root my XT1097 on android 5.1 using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...e-edition-superboot-style-root-motox-t2889264 not realizing it wasn't for android 5.1. Realizing this was the wrong image (No service or wifi what so ever) I flashed the proper image to return to stock, but now my device simply sits at the M logo and wont boot. Any help to get this device back up and running is appreciated!

Yep, I wiped them both as per usual. If it helps, I can still access fastboot and recovery.
If it is sticking at the M, its failing to boot Android at all. Does it roll into recovery automatically? Which firmware did you flash? Also, was the version flashed older than the one you previously had?

Yeah, that's where I figured it was hanging. All signs just point to a bad flash/firmware. I'd try downloading a different version (even 5.1 since you're unlocked) or verifying the hash on the firmware you flashed. You can use HashMyFiles to check the md5 or SHA hashes.

Yeah, that's where I figured it was hanging. All signs just point to a bad flash/firmware. I'd try downloading a different version (even 5.1 since you're unlocked) or verifying the hash on the firmware you flashed. You can use HashMyFiles to check the md5 or SHA hashes.

Would you know of a place where I can obtain the factory images then? The one I was using only had a couple of them, none of which were 5.1

This thread has a link that has the 5.1 firmwares. You have to do some digging, but they should be there... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3148211

Sorry to be such a pain, but would you have flash instructions for the official firmware? I'm just afraid of messing something up

I am personally a huge fan of House of Moto, it will generate automatic scripts to flash the firmware for you. Check out the thread here: http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php?/topic/61124-House-of-Moto-[4.3]
Also, MotoFirmware has some firmwares for the X2, I used to use them for my RAZR M. http://motofirmware.center/files/category/46-moto-x-2nd-generation/

I tried to use the House of Moto with this firmware: http://motofirmware.center/files/file/249-victara_tmo_51_lpe2332-213_cid9_cfcxmlzip/ but when I load it into the HOM it displays this: "Custom recovery not found.
Using factory image: VICTARA_TMO_5.1_LPE23.32-21.3_cid9_CFC.xml.zip
ERROR: XML script not found in this factory image. This is not yet supported."

That firmware looks like the one for xt1095/T-Mobile/Pure Edition. Also, that error sounds like the HoM instructions weren't followed right. I've flashed my device a bunch with HoM.

Would this one work: VICTARA_NIIBR_XT1097_5.1_LPE23.32-14.2_cid12_CFC.xml.zip? I'm just confused with the "NIIBR" in the firmware name.

So the phone booted up, thank you so much for the help, but for some reason it wont detect my sim card, the wifi doesnt work on it, and it occasionally reboots. I also noticed that the baseband version is unknown. Is there a way to fix this?

Sounds like whatever firmware you flashed had the wrong radios. You should be able to download the Canadian firmware and just flash the radios.

I did flash the Canadian firmware to my knowledge. RETCA_XT1097_5.0.1_LXE22.46-22_cid14_CFC.xml?
I was browsing the xda threads and saw this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/guide-xt1097-to-xt1095-nextel-t2972693 where it states: "IMPORTANT. From 5.1 update, the modems included on the update are FULLY compatible with all models, XT1097, 1092 and 1093 and all carriers ,so, you don't have to worry about losing IMEI, signal or data." So, should I be able to flash the brazilian xt1097 firmware and have the proper radios installed from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/general/ota-android-marshmallow-6-0-final-t3248315 ?

No signal strength and imei gone

Mine does show imei but it's not getting any signal.
I have an Xt1097 converted to xt1095 like 6 months ago, and i didn't have this issue for the lollipop 5.1 update. Weird. What should i do?

Correct you need the modem for the xt1094 to get it working again.

I have recently rooted, my device. Thanks to CF. But in the whole bunch of flash coding, just make sure you are not flashing your modems. Below are the commands I had avoided while flashing the rom.
$ fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
$ fastboot erase modemst1
$ fastboot erase modemst2
Now, in case of yours, you can try to flash with modem of 5.0 or 5.1 but I would recommend to go-ahead with 4.4.4 since that was original.
Incase if you failed to find it, then try with 5.0 or 5.1

which means that if i ignore this code it could get my signal back previously ?
