[Q] Official update to .108 from rooted .757 - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Don't know a lot about root, my phone is on 14.3.A.0.757 and I used towelroot to root it and I am wanting to update to the official 14.4.A.0.108 firmware. Can I just click on the notification icon that comes up every time on my phone, or like go through the update centre, or do I have to flash back to a factory version of .757 first? Any precautions I need to take to avoid losing all data and/or breaking my phone? I don't mind losing root because I want to try it without it again because I think root is making it run very slow. I have a lot of problems with the camera being unavailable and taking 10 years to start up and just a few other apps randomly being non responsive etc. Any help would be appreciated.

I think it will "Couldn't Verify", but you can try to update it aswell.

No, you cant keep your data when you upgrade to .108
If you can keep it, there is no guarantee that the phone will have best perfomance...
So backup your data and flash .108 using Flashtool with FTF
P/S: Root does not slow down your phone...Apps does.......And every update is better in term of speed...

[Q] Will firmware update loose my data & apps? no root cant backup apps

I have a new (2weeks) samsung GT-I9003 which kies report a new firmware update & before doing that want me to take backup but it will only backup my contacts/sms etc. how do I backup my installed apps as I have not yet rooted my phone, I searched the forums & found a way to root but got to know that even rooting will loose my apps/data so what should I do first?
I need the following things
I am testing various apps to find the best ones which I will using long term so as of now lot of install/uninstall hapening, after few days once I settle I want to update new firmware but should I root before that or after updating to new firmware.
Does rooting remains rooted after new FW updates in future?
Once rooted I can install apps like Titanium, unrooted I can't use Titanium yet to back up my apps & its data so its a catch 22 situation for me & atleast once I will have to loose my apps data but this time I should do it once for all so I can streamline future updates.
Hope some one can answer this.
If you update with kies you wont loose anything, if you update custom roms(for the first time) you will loose your apps and data.
Thats a good news for me, so should I 1st update the firmware via kies then root it as 2nd step?
I took backup & then started the firmware update, it downloaded a small file showed 100% complete & then strangely it opened another windows & its now downloading a huge file of 400-500Mb...........is the firmware that big?
The downloading is going on past 10 mins on 1mbps connection.
Finally it gave error in mid way I assume that something happened & made the usb connection loss, I got these screen shots & the phone is now hung displaying "downloading do not turn off the target"
What should I do, need help?
Since i did not get any answer i took the battery out & then plugged in again the phone booted fine.
I now have rooted my phone, if i update the firmware will I need to root it again?

depends on the firmware, most custom roms have root already build in

Thoughts about OTA update and CWM

I have been waiting for a few weeks for an OTA update from 3.195 to a major version, and finally this update has arrived today (v3.223). But some things have caught my attention:
First: update size is about 0.1 Mb, and Update Center says that "a computer is required". In other words, it forces me to use PC Companion. But I don't want to lose root (I'm on locked bootloader), so I want/need to update through OTA and cross my fingers so that black79one method will still works.
Second: I was waiting this update to confirm if CWM has impact on the update itself, as others have supposedly reported before (but no one confirmed).
Surprisingly, after remove CWM and reboot the device, no OTA update is available! So CWM apparently has impact over OTA updates. Now I can only wait for a new update notification, and if this update will be a full update "Over The Air".
EDIT: A few hours later the update is still available, same result: 0.1 Mb and "a computer is required" (of course this time without CWM). Just waiting for a truly and fully OTA update to 3.223 (or whichever version).
More stuff to conclude this little interesting thread about updates and recoveries:
Checking the option to allow updates automatically in the Update Center settings triggers the update to be downloaded by trully OTA. But after 20 minutes waiting, the download progress bar remains empty. Looking at the wifi icon, it displays activity, then pause, then activity again, and so on.
Then I remembered that root blocks OTA updates (dammed memory...) so I had unroot my device but this does not change nothing: 0.1 Mb 3.223 update and progress bar remaining empty.
So I started to play with some things:
Flash a clean 3.195 tft with flashtool and force an update search, same result as earlier. CWM is evidently out of scene now.
Flash a clean 1.303 tft with flashtool and force an update search, with some interesting result: an update is available, but for 3.195 firmware (not latest 3.223). After update to the first, a new update search attempt offers no version to update. Anyway I'm sure that if this happened it would be the 0.1 Mb update along with the now famous SAME ****ING RESULT AS ALWAYS.
At this point is clear to me that 3.223 versión is not a fully and truly OTA update, but is still pending to prove if CWM allows such update kind. So I tried this:
Flash a clean 1.303 tft with flashtool and force an update search, download the update, follow the black79one method to root, install CWM and finally done the update. Result: device is restarted, then the update begins but a few seconds later it's interrupted. Remove CWM with my removal tool does not help (same result).
So INSTALL CWM DOES NOT ALLOW OTA UPDATES ANYMORE. I think the recovery partition is overrided at some point and the only way to lead back the OTA functionality is recover the original recovery (amazing pun ). I tried some minimal flashtool flashing (only fotakernel.sin and loader.sin) but does not help.
For the moment my work ends here. If anyone could give ideas they will be welcome.
Why not just bite the bullet and flash the 223 ftf and have done with it? If you are happy to flash stuff already, then
there seems little reason to worry about either a) bricking your 'phone or b) having to send it back because of a).
You've already taken various steps with your 'phone, be brave!
Unless I am missing something, which I may well be, I am fairly new to all this, but in truth I did all sorts to my new
Xperia T without too much worry, it's okay.

Because I don't want to lose root, and both 195 and 223 tft's are not rootable at this time if you are in locked bootloader.
I know there is a workaround, flashing a rooted 223 firmware through CWM, but the intention of this thread was to demonstrate if CWM allows OTA update, nothing more. Now that it is demonstrated, such intention is how to fully revert CWM.
Okay, I understand that, but I guess I should of been clearer above too, in that, does it matter that much about unlocking your bootloader?
Is it because you want to protect your warranty? If that is the reason I understand your concerns, it is just as I say, perhaps foolishly, I
unlocked mine and rooted my T almost as soon as I got it, without really knowing 100 percent what I was doing! (true) but understanding
why I wanted to have root access (mainly at the moment to uninstall dross like Facebook and Twitter that are pre-installed and to be
able to decide what apps do what on my 'phone) - I understood the risks and took them, as have many people, and lived to tell the
tale.
I do not have the technical know how to help with the cwm query, sorry.

Don't worry mate, everyone is welcome to this discussion and their opinions will be very appreciated
Is not a matter of fear, I contacted with Sony technical support in Spain a few days after to bought my phone (they unlock your bootloader with no cost if you can provide a valid sim unlock code) but they misbehaved to me: the carrier never came to pick up the device, and when I sent a new email to show my annoyance and request a new pick up they simply didn't response me. After that, I decided to not send my phone and live with locked bootloader.

[Q] A few questions regarding root

I apologise in advance if these have been answered before.
Background: I only intend to root this phone because the ram management seems pretty bad (keyboard refuses to open sometimes in web browser, and facebook messenger chatheads disappear, and minimised apps close very quickly), so I want to change the minfree values or use the supercharger script.
I can't find stock firmware for my country in the firmware thread.
I'm running stock firmware .254.
1: If I root this phone, is there a easy way to unroot it? Like deleting the superuser apk from system files, etc.
2: Will sony companion update this phone even if it's rooted but on stock rom?
3: Does the "repair" function in sony companion reflash stock rom?
1, 2 and 3. You will be able to unroot your phone with repair function in PC Companion. When you update your phone through PC Companion you will lose root.
Wytapatalkowane z Xperia SP.
Thank you so much for the answer!
does flashing kernal requires a factory reset or is it okay to go on:silly:

You don't have to. When you talk about flashing Kernel to root phone and then you will came back to kernel wich you have had before you don't need to make wipe.
But. If you want to stay on flashed Kernel (when you only flash kernel) you must have on your mind that some of apps can kill themselfs, or system will be unstable without wipe. This situation doesnt have to happen, but can.
does doomlord's root method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440375) work on a stock Xperia SP? Literally just out of the box, everything stock. thanks
Yes.
Just first update official firmware to 2.254.

[Q] What's the best way to update to 4.4.4 WITHOUT losing root with root apps intact?

Hey all!
I'm eager to upgrade my Sony Xperia Z1 to the latest and obviously greatest Android 4.4.4, but I've recently installed so many apps, both root and non-root that I do not want to do this over again. I finally got Timeshift Video working (took me longer than it should have, I'll admit) and I just don't want to go through the process again. So the question is: is there a way to update while keeping all data from apps intact, and will all root apps from 4.4.2 even work on 4.4.4 still?
Thanks in advance!

In order to keep your apps just do not select data before flashing. Now for the root I rooted my phone with a very strange way. I flashed the .108 ftf and then with adb i flashed the doomkernel(v21) to my phone. Then I booted up my phone and enter one of the recoveries (TWRP) select reboot and before rebooting it will give you the option to install super user. After this i powered off my phone (in recoveries reboot options) and connected my phone in flash mode to my computer. With flashtool i went to flash the .108 ftf BUT I didnt wipe anything and i excluded everything exept the kernel. When this finished I booted up my phone and it was rooted.
I just say what i did do not blame me for anything as if you follow my way you do it with your responsibility.(press thanks button if i helped  )

[Q] er.... help please?

greetings to all ya'll wonderful people from all over the world from South Africa I have a dilemma, and as I am somewhat ocd about having unneccessary things on my screen I come to you for some advice.
I currently have 12.0.A.2.254 on my SP, and the phone is rooted. recently the OTA offered to update to 12.1.A.1.205. Im struggling to find if its safe to update from 4.1.2 to 4.3 (is that right?) using either pc companion or downloading it via the phone directly, considering that my phone is rooted. I dont want to have to reflash my phone if possible. Im also hella scared of bricking the phone.
Its fine you wont brick your phone unless you abort halfway through flashing or something else silly, youll have to re-root when 205 is finished installing though (use towelroot, google it).
Update via Pc Companion. Yes you will lose root but via Towelroot (see my guide in general) you can reroot it
~~Regards
Bricking your mobile device is quite simple to recover from with flashtool but since you want to avoid that, here's some notes you can take note:
Official SONY Firmwares are able to upgrade your device so long your device has no custom kernel and recovery
Root may be lost but follow the TowelRoot guides in the forums to recover it back
Do not venture too far if you're inexperienced
If you ever face a problem with your device seek help from the forums
Use Sony PC Companion to Upgrade Firmware or OTA (They both work the same way)
Regards,
Furrydaus
