Hi guys,
I need root access on my M7 so I can stream spotify over DLNA. I've never done anything like this before and I'm struggling to find a guide that explains everything so hopefully you can help. As it stands my device is as normal (up to date on EE network)
Given i only need root access for the DLNA, im not even sure how far I have to take this - whether I need a custom ROM or not etc. Ideally I would like to keep the ability to get OTA updates, although obviously dont care about EE branding.
Any and all help is appreciates. Also I'm an experienced programmer, so don't worry about me being 'squeamish around PCs' etc, although by all means explain all you can
cheers!

so basically you'll need to
unlock the bootloader
flash a custom recovery
root from custom recovery
unlocking the bootloader will wipe your phone so backup your data before.
unlocking the bootloader will also wipe some HTC preloaded apps in /data/media/preload so you will not be able to use ota update unless you restore all these files after unlocking the bootloader.
you should post your question in the "q&a" subforum next time not in "general"
Ahhh thank you! I didn't even notice that button there when I was looking!
Is there a way to get OTA updates reenabled? I've read it can be done but nowhere explains how. Something about changing an ID code on the phone?
Also, can I back up what I have in some way in case I want to undo it?

Hi,
I have used Visionary to first temp root and then perm root and apps such as Screen shot, Titanium backup, Auto killer memory etc which need root work fine but I just can not get Adfree to take those annoying adverts away and was hoping someone here that has successfully got Adfree working properly on the DHD could help?
I have updated the host files in Adfree but it just wont work, any help would be greatly appreciated to get Adfree working.
Thanks
Well it works for me after updating the host list, strange
All I have done is used Visionary to temp root and then perm root and updated the host files in Adfree, but Ads still show.
I haven't gone any further with any of the other modifications like S-OFF or anything else like that. Do you need to?

My DHD is brand new, only had it a couple days so I am just using it as it is without any ROMS. Heres the software version etc pictured, I don't know if this is a version where Adfree currently doesnt work or other people have the same software and Adfree works?
You have to set s-off. The flash memory is locked and any changes to system files (adfree needs to make some) are not persistent if you are s-on. S-off is the same as unlocking the flash memory.

Either radio s-off our hboot s-off will do but radio is safer and you won't loose it if you do something stupid like accepting an official update.

I'm usually pretty good at these things but I thought for once in my life, I would take the backseat and actually ask for some pretty simple technical help.
Details for my Note that I purchased from NewEgg.ca:
- Baseband version: N7000UBKK1
- Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-N7000UBKK2-CL705203
Can I upgrade to any of the different carrier specific ROMs (listed here)? Does it matter about which part of the world I am in (Canada in this case)?
Will there be language issues? For example, I upgrade to a German carrier ROM.
Do I need to root the phone to be able to upgrade to any ROM? Or, do I only need to root to upgrade to a specific ROM?
I assume that the baseband version (as listed in Settings > About phone) is my ROM version. Is this true? If so, where does this ROM come from.
As you can tell, I'm asking some pretty basic questions by xda-dev standards. I apologize but would greatly appreciate some answers.
Cheers!

You need to install clockwork mod recovery, then gain root, then you can MAKE A BACKUP and flash a ROM that looks good to you. Read read, and read again every post in every forum you go in... it'll save you a lot of trouble in the long run. As far as languages go, it may come up in a different language but you can switch it to English on the first screen. Any question you have will have already been asked in the forum you are in so use the search function to get answers before asking and getting flamed. Good luck!

You're right. I read through some hefty length threads and I have a better understanding of these things, that's for sure. To confirm my sanity, riddle me this. I don't need to root in order to upgrade to the latest stock ROM that was recently posted. Rooting simply gives me access to other features (such as titanium backup, etc).
yes,You're right.
We don't need root access to install and use CWM but it is required to do other most customizations, like spoofing your device's name by editing build.prop, changing font,LCD density, increasing battery life and the list goes on to other interesting stuffs

Dead on. I know there is a lot of "rooting will void your warranty" that goes on and it may be true... but out of 5 phones I have had rooted that I exchanged I never once had an issue. If your jumping on the Android train you might as well jump in head first! I came in a couple years ago with zero knowledge of this OS and studied my way through until being quite proficient. It seems like a lot now but it will become natural after awhile. Also, you can PM me with any questions you have and I promise I wont flame you... I have walked a lot of people through it.. I own a Mac/mobile device store in my town and help people all the time.

Over the weekend I got prompted to install an OTA update on my rooted Thinkpad Tablet. I have not yet installed it for fear of losing root (it mentions that it will factory reset the device in the process). I'm posting it here for any Devs that want to have a crack at it. It looks like it includes new Battery Firmware as well as "recovery-from-boot" and "install-recovery.sh" files.
I manually applied the build.prop.p file on my desktop and am attaching the new build.prop generated by this update. It looks like it is an update to ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0086_US. (Android 3.1)
I should point out that this is a US, 16GB, Wifi-only model.

This for bringing this up - I got the same update notification as you, and also like you, didnt update to ensure my root remains intact.
Last thing I want is to lose my titanium backup again.
You can restore root after the update provided you used the ota rootkeeper app to backup your su file first. The update doesn't do a factory reset - nothing personal was changed all. After the update (three minute process) you go to the android market and install superuser app. Open that app, then go to the ota rootkeeper and restore the root.
I didn't open superuser app the first time, so I couldn't restore the root. After I realized my mistake the ota rootkeeper worked perfectly.
I had all the lenovo bloatware frozen with titanium backup when I installed the update, but that didn't affect the process at all.
there's already thread explaining how to update without loosing root nor CWM !

My OP was more to provide the OTA update.zip in case a Dev is interested in including it in any Custom ROM they may be working on.
I just updated and it kept all of my settings. I didn't have root, but there was no factory reset.

When will arrive this update to the ROW version? Btw. when will arrive Android 3.2?
Short answer - no 3.2, ICS only. Should be able to find the release date for ROW on the Lenovo forum.
Think there will also be a OTA2.5 (Android 3.1)...
I'm sure there will be too! I read one main purpose of OTA2 was to kill the vulnerability DrBliss found to acheive our root. Since Lenovo/ThinkPad is a business line of machines they didn't like the root -- according to the article it weakens enterprise security.
What it weakens is their ability to sell custom roms.
I unzipped it, and it looks like a new recovery is included. I'm wondering if anyone has yet had the time to take a look and recook this with the old recovery, and whatever other old files might be fundamental to root. I dunno, maybe I'm being too simple minded. Anyone seen anything? God knows you don't want me to do it.

Hi friends. I bought a refurbished pixel 4 xl from amazon. developer options as seen in the picture. The device seems to be not OEM unlocked. but when I contacted verizon, they checked the imei and said that the device is unlocked.
The question I want to ask is: Can I root this device? Or can I install different roms?

Your bootloader is locked, therefore you cannot root or install any custom roms. Verizon was referring to it being carrier unlocked, not bootloader unlocked.
Hey!
Using the easy way to root and install roms you can't. BUT I am working on a way to unlock any pixel, even if it is bootloader locked.
I am quite busy right now but I expect to have more free time on July to work on this project. If you are interested just have look on my profile.
Also, to increase the chances of success, don't install any OS Software updates.

Hey!
Yes the project is live and still going, though slower than what I would like... Any help is welcome
Generally, carrier CSR's (customer service representatives) won't know what a bootloader lock is, so when Verizon tells you it's unlocked, they're talking about the carrier lock - meaning it isn't locked to their network and can be used on other networks.
I believe there is a way to determine whether this was a carrier specific device via the IMEI, but I don't have that information on hand.
There's a couple things you can try to see if you can get OEM Unlock to become available:
Let the device sit while connected to the Internet to see if OEM Unlock becomes available.
Factory reset the device WITHOUT a SIM, do not connect to a WiFi network, and complete basic setup. Enable Developer Options and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, manually change the time ahead one week.
If neither of these work, you probably won't be able to unlock the bootloader, and should seek a replacement from Amazon. They don't know the difference - to them, a phone is a phone is a phone, so as far as they're concerned, a former Verizon device is exactly the same as a global Google unlocked device.
I unlocked my new Zenfone8. then I had flashed the new E-OS system. and somehow I put it in my pocket wrong, and now the phone doesn't tell me it's unlocked! and it only goes to the green START screen Can someone help me?
How can I unlock the bootloader again? I would love to be able to bring it back to its original state!

So.. you got a NEW Zenfone 8. Decided to unlock right away, then flash E-OS (never heard of this before), and even put in your pocket wrong. And now you want to unlock it again? And let us not forget you're a newbie.
I'm not trolling but next time always read how to revert back or somekind of backup plan when you do some flashing. You didn't even mentioned any way you tried to get it working again.
Guys pls help this poor guy.

hello.
this e/OS (https://doc.e.foundation/devices) is a siple system but fairly new.
yes, that would have been smart with the backup... So with adb I can't get into the cell phone, I can connect with fastboot. this E/OS only runs when the phone is unlocked.. I previously unlocked it with the original tool from Asus (unlock.apk) But if the cell phone is lying on its side in the suitcase and accidentally presses all 3 buttons at the same time, the cell phone will be locked again! I didn't know that... and can you unlock this phone with fastboot? or with programs completely flash on original? Best Regards!
Hi, I can suggest you try the instructions in this post, the install of /e/OS most likely failed and now it doesnt get past the bootloader. The device is probably fine. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/full-recover-to-stock-if-things-went-really-bad.4337467/
worked!
but important! You first have to deactivate the digital driver signature in Windows 10!! otherwise driver fragments will be missing when flashing!!
Had to flash twice, and the procedure worked!
many thanks to everyone!
PS: what tool do you use for your backups?

I personally do not store anything really important on my phone, so no backups apart from Google photos and manually uploading my important files.
