currently i have a note 4 with verizon, but going to switch
i currently have unlimited data with vz, im grandfathered, and going to the 2 lines for 100$ with unlimited data (only tethering is throttled, and for those who root t-mobile won't be able to differentiate between on device data and tethered right?).
Service, how is it? I live in phoenix, don't travel much but if i do i'm never in rural areas. I do go to NYC\Queens are about once a month.
Customer service, How is it?
Billing expectations, how is it?
Thanks for your input guys, i'm ready to make the jump just need some input-
Should try prepaid T-Mobile first. Service might suck and then you will be mad. Or it could same or better and wonder why you did t switch as fast as you could.

I live in DC but travel back and forth to my hometown which is (Brooklyn, NY). The service is great within any major city. I've had bad service in West Virginia (which is pretty rural).
I honestly think T-Mobile's customer service is great and if I'm not mistaken they work 24/7.
Right now my girlfriend and I are on the "2 for $100" family plan that you speak of and it would of been 2 for $100 but we both have financed phones (she has the S5 & I have the Note 4) and we both have insurance. Our bill is roughly $180.
Conclusion, its not a bad deal and what I love is no contract and we have JUMP which allows us to switch phones as many times as we want (for a fee of course).

I was a long time VZW customer for 14 years living in Chicago. I recently moved to Scottsdale in August. The recent Galaxy S4 OTA from VZW rendered my phone useless. Twelve to twenty reboots daily. After 6 replacements Verizon refused to switch out to another model phone. Tech Support had the balls to suggest that I buy a phone on Craigslist even though my current phone was still under factory warranty. I made the switch to T-Mobile in November and couldn't be happier. Faster and better LTE coverage than VZW. Plus unlocked bootloaders and more affordable plans. TMO just announced their Data Stash program effective 1/15/15. Another win win for the Un Carrier...... Go for it my friend

the answer i was looking for, you've made my decision. Getting two Note 4's ,, was considering Nexus 6 but na, i have the note 4 with vz and i hate it because of the locked bootloader too.
I worked for vz corp in chandler for the last 9.5 years up to November 1st. So Yeah, you're experience sounds about right, and i def don't wanna be treated like a VZ Consumer so I have til the end of the month before i'm converted back to a consumer account with consumer pricing..
Thank you all for your opinions...
I will be going for the 2 for 100$ with the monthly payments and insurance i'm also about 180$
Q: can i pay the phone off sooner if i wish?

These guys all hit it spot on... I might even go as far as to say try the test drive program. Yes yes its an iPhone, butttttt, its a no strings attached way to test coverage for seven days.
Moral of the story:
You want to be sure of your coverage over everything. If coverage is good where you live/commute/reside/work/whatever, then you probably won't have a better experience than with T-Mobile. And the network/coverage/plans/deals just keep getting better and better, with no signs of slowing down.
i'm on t-mobile...
couple of questions, i have wanam ,but i don't see the option to change the mapping of our recents\back button ( want the recents to be menu and long back button to be recents)
oh also, is there a dropbox offer for T-Mo note 4 buyers?
also when wifi calling is enabled, sms fails immediately in hangouts when trying to send (can receive though)
turn off wifi calling and boom it works. any ideas?
narrowed down sms via wifi issue (kernel related)
So does anyone know about dropbox offers? and swapping recents for menu? thanks.
Remap recents button to menu

does wifi calling feature use more battery?
So having a peculiar situation , with text over wifi calling,
I got my phone with NJ7 , didn't know any better and flashed a NK4 rom, and while at work wifi texts weren't going through, so i went home flashed full firmware tested at home wifi seemed to work just fine, came back to work today, while wifi calling is on it doesn't work immediately gives me message failed msg using hangouts, but with wifi calling on work wifi using stock sms app works fine, what could it be??
Why would hangouts work over wifi calling on home network on hangouts but not on work wifi on hangouts?

that's a (small) shame.. I was able to use Wifi Calling once when out of the country (cell radio turned off)... saved me a ton of $$ when I needed to make a few important phone calls.
oh wait.. let me over-react... OMG that's it I will NEVER buy this phone... just kidding.
If there was ever such a thing as a good carrier app, this would be it. Shame, but not unexpected.
Really wish tmobile would find a way to get it on the market so all tmobile phones could download/update it.
Sorry for my ignorance, but what setting up Google voice with your phone number? Is that possible? Just curious since I was looking forward to this feature too. (Never used wifi calling)
Not a surprise since Wi-Fi calling only works on GB ROMs, it doesn't works on ICS/JB ROMs.

It's working on ICS roms. I'm reasonably certain that as soon as Tmo releases a JB rom with this in it, we'll see it ported to other devices/roms. I'm definitely hoping we see one for this device at some point as well. Won't stop me from getting this phone, but I'm hoping eventually we get the goods.
this is a deal breaker for me, as i am frequently in large buildings without reception.
there is no way for anyone besides tmo to add wifi calling. custom roms will not fill this gap. google voice kind of by not with the carrier number.

Not entirely true. Its built into the SGS 3 T-Mobile JellyBean leaks but it is not a simple task at all to get into other ROMs like it was in GB... it is now built into settings with a bunch of libs and such. Not many devs look at it as something worth spending days on to figure it out and code it into a custom ROM. Unfortunately of course.

Same! It's great for those who need it, but I am not in that group.
It just means this device is going to be stock on T-mobile so likely they will get updates just as fast as the Play Store version (it may be the same firmware minus Google Wallet).
It is a shame... when I went to China I could still talk to people at home for free which was amazing. And it helps in large buildings.
This is still entirely possible, without using anything developed by T-Mobile. It's not ideal for everyone, but I will be posting a comprehensive guide one of these days. I've been promising people for months, and once mid-terms are over, I'll be able to deliver.
Well using a sip account over WiFi will accomplish the same thing
The way I see it, this is actually a good thing. If they were to support WiFi calling on the Nex4, then it would need to go through them to get updates. If we got them from Google, then WiFi calling would break, and **** storm of complaints would hit TMobile support lines. This sucks, but i havent used it in over a year and to me direct updates > WiFi calling.
Agreed that it's only a small shame.
I'm not the one for long phone chats, anyway.
Here is the solution:
1. Port # to Google Voice
2. Setup a voip.ms account with a DID, setup failovers for no answer to forward to TMo # after 3 rings, unreachable, forward to TMo # after 3 rings.
3. Install csipsimple and register SIP account/voip.ms
4. Install Google Voice app and select "Use GV to make all calls"
When making a call, it prompts if you want to use voip.ms or cellular (Tmo). Incoming calls get routed to Google Voice, route to voip.ms, if not answered after 3 rings/14 seconds it forwards to TMo #. I get my TMo prepaid card for $28.50 a month (callingmart.com), I have the $30/month TMo plan (Unlimited 4G, unlimited text and 100min). I use the 100min up first then resort to voip calling the rest of the month if needed. voip.ms DID is .99 cents per month, and each minute on voip.ms is 1cent per minute, compared to 10 cent per minute after 100min on TMo. So I basically pay $30 per month after tax and after voip.ms fee's, insane.

Using SIP is not the same thing as WiFi calling. I think most people here know how to setup a VOIP account but T-mobile's version was fully integrated into their account/phone #.
So Straight Talk has been trying to get me to switch to a T-Mobile SIM for a while now, so I finally convinced them to send me one for free. I got it today and tried to activate it, and they're telling me that it's not available in my area (after nagging me for weeks to switch). I called in and they're trying to tell me that it's because the Nexus 4 is an AT&T phone and not a T-Mobile unlocked. I kept trying to tell her that the Nexus 4 is GSM unlocked, so it should work for anything GSM, but they disagreed and said it had to be either AT&T or T-Mobile. Then she got really mad and put me on hold while she talked to her boss.
She came back and wanted to charge me for a full month, I explained that I was only switching because they recommended it. She's now talking to her manager again to see if it's possible to switch my number without me paying again and forfeiting the rest of my month.
This service is awful. I wish they would have just stopped nagging me and let me keep AT&T.
EDIT
She also said that my birthday was incorrect and that I had the correct month and year, but the incorrect date. I said that I must have made a typo and that I could provide other information if that would work, she told me she'd hold while I logged in online and corrected my info. So she sat there in silence while I updated that info, then said that it wasn't coming through so I'd have to call back tomorrow. I asked her if she'd refreshed her page and she said no, then refreshed it and said it had updated and that she could continue helping me now, but I still had to confirm my birthday again. *sigh*. I've now been on the line with them for an hour.
T-Mobile service sucks in Kalamazoo (I'm a former customer so its from experience), very spotty coverage, and it pretty much sucks everywhere in Michigan as I travel a lot. So your a lot better off with AT&T. I just left StraightTalk AT&T as I hate their customer service, sitting an hour on hold is common, and at $50 it made more sense to just go with one of AT&T's own GoPhone plans for the same price (250 talk minutes, unlimited texts, 1 GB data). AT&T's customer service is far superior to StraightTalks.

I work in Three Rivers and barely got a signal outside with T-Mo and nothing indoors. In fact the entire drive down 131 from Kalamazoo I would get no signal. AT&T is Edge2 down here but at least I get a good signal and can use the phone most of the time. In Sturgis I doubt you would get any signal as you're too far away from I-80. I had T-Mo for 2 years, 2003-2005 and drove to Virginia every other month. Only had a signal on major interstates and once I got off had no service. I figured after 10 years their service should have gotten better but after 2 weeks on the $30 plan I gave up.

I never did head very far south. I had the $30 t mobile plan for about 20 days before getting my ST SIM, the most traveling I did was up to Lansing. The signal in Lansing was a bit spotty, but good voice coverage.
I think that they were pushing it because I had asked a question about it earlier. I asked if getting a t mobile SIM would allow me to roam on at&t service if I went to a 0 service area. They told me that it wouldn't, but that I could easily switch between them if I wanted.
I have been happy with St att here in Sturgis and northern Indiana by Middlebury and Elkhart areas. Three rivers does have slow speeds. I guess I won't bother with getting another similar card then.

So it looks like pretty much every other prepaid carrier has its own thread so I thought I'd start one for the Straight Talk folks. I picked up my N5 a little over a week ago and switched both my wife and I (also has an N5) from Sprint. We'd been with them for a little over 9 years but in their LTE migration here in Portland their coverage went from decent to terrible. Thus far I'm very happy with the AT&T service, speed is good, cost is AWESOME, and I can tether without root so I retain work email functionality. I'm very pleased with the decision to dump Sprint and couldn't be happier with the N5!
With my ATT phone I could not tether unless I went to the high Gb plan. The unlocked Nexus, as you found, lets you do it out of the box.

I did the same. Jumped ship from Sprint and went to Straight Talk, mainly because of the savings and Sprints bogus 3G & WiMax 4G. Tried t-mobiles $30 plan but the cell reception in my area was worse than what i had with Sprint. I was skeptical about going back to At&t as I had them before i had Sprint and was getting charged way more than i should have been paying for one line. I went with Straight Talk At&t and i have LTE coverage, a very reasonable phone bill, and no worries about extra charges. Definitely recommend to anyone whos looking for a reasonable bill and doesnt have good t-mobile coverage.
Me and two of my friends got nexus 5s and att st Sims and two of us networks say home. The other says at&t -_- good service none the less.

Anyone able to get the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to work? I have seen threads where the N5 and T-Mobile users has gotten it to work but none for the ST ATT users.
I dropped Sprint with another six months left on my contract, so it will cost me about $120 in fees, but it's worth it. I'll save almost $ 40 a month, so after just three months the ETF would have been paid off, and I really start saving.
I'm very happy with Straight Talk AT&T. I have superior data speeds, and my calls are clear with no drops.
My mobile hotspot works, too.
I've used a few different pre paid plans the last few years but none of them have been this good. At first I went for the cheapest plan but with low minutes thinking I would use voip or something but I would get extra charges.
Only thing I've worried about with this plan is data limits, but they cleared that up with an actual limit now. I don't really download that much anyways and have a lot of Wi-Fi access.

Absolutely. I downloaded FoxFI but it looks like it's unnecessary.
I'm quite happy with att st for the most part (Salem Oregon). Tmobile data speeds are 2 to 3x faster, but limited service in doors of course.
The one problem I've had with strait talk that I've seen others confirm is the push delay. After an unknown amount of time of inactivity (usually a few minutes) the Google services port on st closes and you won't get new emails or hangouts ect until you refresh or the Google heart beat refreshes (up to 28 minutes).
Fortunately there's an app that lets you manually change the Google push ping to keep it alive. So I'm usually not more than 2 minutes behind on hangouts.

I've used FoxFi and that seems to enable the factory hotspot. In any case it works.
One thing hardly anyone is mentioning is that Straight Talk cripples video streaming on 4G and LTE. Watching YouTube videos is pretty useless unless you switch to 3G which is still pretty crappy. Another thing is that MMS can be hit or miss on Straight Talk. Sometimes its fine and other times it won't work.

I did my first month on the Nexus 5 with Straight talk, really have no complaints at all. AT&T's coverage is not anywhere near as good as Verizon, but it's damn well better than Sprint or T Mobile. I left straight talk for h2o Wireless as there's very little LTE out here with AT&T anyways. The data cap was just too small on straight talk.
H20 wireless $60 a month fit unlimited everything, no throttling.

I have read that H2O throttles that $60 plan after 3GB.
I am glad someone started an att straight talk thread. Can anyone with a VPN tell me if it works with att straight talk? I use a pretty common VPN provider which works no problem on WIFI but has very frequent dis-connects while on mobile. It is pretty much unusable while on mobile.
Yeah so I've heard they throttle.
The way I figure it. Att is best in my area.
45$ a month for unlim text. Minutes. And 2.5gb data. Is still cheaper then if I wanted to go sign a contract with att for service. I'd have capped minutes. Maybe unlimited text. And 2gb data. Not even unlimited with slow speeds...
So I get an extra 500mb. Free mins. And such. And its cheaper and no contract..
And I haven't found anything better yet.

Today I posted this on G+:
https://plus.google.com/104522596589171041648/posts/JfBDxdTAjSR
I'd be willing to place down a wager that the +Verizon Wireless and +AT&T variants of the Galaxy S5 will have the download booster feature disabled.
I can't imagine those companies taking very kindly to the idea of using WiFi and LTE simultaneously, just due to the fear of pissed off customers going over their data plans because they had no idea what they were doing. Plus it has the real potential to create even more usage on their networks, which most bigger carriers don't seem to like.
Considering how providers like to push people to use WiFi whenever possible (doesn't ever carrier have a WiFi finder app these days?), yeah, I don't see the big boys taking too kindly to the download booster. I guess we'll find out in a little under 2 weeks.
If my hunch is correct, I'd highly suggest that anyone owning affected variants scream and complain to anyone who will listen. This will hopefully lead to the guilty carriers releasing statements saying "The exclusion of the download booster functionality was an oversight and not intentional. We will fix this issue in a future software update."
Any thoughts?
It better not be. But yes, I can see them doing that. I say, it's my data, let me use it anyway I want to.
---------- Post added at 01:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:06 PM ----------
Well AT&T's sure doesn't mention download booster anywhere on the S5 page. I swear to God if they disabled it I will raise hell. Such a great feature too.
But these larger carriers have to much control. They really shouldn't be able to touch any device or modify it. Only Samsung should do that. If T-Mobile didn't have such spotty coverage by me, I'd be on them in a second ordering my S5 instead of ATT.
Ordering the non carrier version of the S5 isn't an option either because it so conveniently doesn't support bands 4 and 17. WOW
That's because the unlocked international version isn't intended for the US market. It's intended to be sold at retail in other countries and the LTE bands that it suppers reflects that.

I don't see why they would do this. If a customer goes over their data usage, that's more money in the carrier's pocket. Playing ignorance isn't an excuse for going over your limit. I don't see why a carrier would hand-hold customers on this issue. Not only that, but I don't see Samsung allowing them to do this, considering this is a pretty major selling point for the S5.
I could be wrong but i would imagine there is a setting you can disable to prevent yourself from constantly using both. So it should be in the purchasers hands hence no reason for AT&T to disable it to prevent data overages. That being said, AT&T is a company that likes to piss everyone off and remove features that are major selling points just because they can.

I can definitely see them doing this. Let me tell you why. AT&T is the only carrier that has brainwashed people in thinking WIFI is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I've often had AT&T reps tell me, ya know you really should use WIFI instead of your data. I was like why do I pay for it then? I still have the original AT&T $30 unlimited data plan for smartphones so I don't care, but even with that, they try to tell me to use wifi. I believe its because they don't want the same disaster to happen to their network that happened back in 2009. The network overloaded with all the iPhones. Nowadays, the network is amazing and has no problem with capacity. But I think they instilled it into all their rep's heads to make people use WIFI all the time. I have passed an AT&T store while driving and my phone connects to their crappy WIFI. I even argued with one rep a while back that my mobile internet connection is more stable than their crappy in-store WIFI network.
So yea thats my two cents. I really hope they don't eliminate this awesome feature. I pre-ordered the device on AT&T and will be the first one to post if they did or not when I get it April 8

I preordered an AT&T GS5 as well. I don't think it will replace my Z Ultra GPE as a daily driver, but I'm definitely going to have fun with it.

Yea I know. Part of me just wishes there was only 1 GS5 that was a world phone that supported every kind of LTE network.
I did use the International Galaxy S3 years ago on AT&T and it worked great. No bloat, fast updates, and a black dialer. I may sound contradicting here, but now may actually be a great time to buy an HSPA+ only device. The HSPA+ network works great and isn't congested anymore. I occasionally test it out on my iPhone 5S since you can turn LTE off. I always get about 7-10mbps down. Even during calls speeds are now great. But when your getting 50mbps on LTE going back to H+ kinda hurts lol.
I ordered the white GS5. Never owned a white galaxy before. Cant wait to get it.

I ordered a white one too. The GS4 GPE only comes in white so I'm used to white Galaxy devices now. haha

This feature is a key selling point in Samsung's walk through of the phone, so I'd say it won't be blocked. My thought was actually that I will never use this feature unless it's an emergency" (I. e. need new rom ASAP) or I have a lot of data left for the month. Otherwise, AT&T could be making some nice dough off of people going over their data limits.

I am hoping that there is a way to disable it, as I really don't need it.
As it turns out, I changed my mind.. Cancelled my order and ordered HTC One M8
http://techknowzone.com/how-to-use-download-booster-in-samsung-galaxy-s5/
According to that article, not only can you disable it, but it actually doesnt impact normal web browsing or downloading small files. All the more reason AT&T has no excuse to disable it. For the average consumer, you wont got over your data simply because its on. If you arent downloading files over 30mb, it does nothing.
I'm sure the feature isn't there on the store models. Maybe because no sim card or active data connection

Sure enough went to the AT&T store today and chgecked the s5 that has a sim card in it and couldn't find the download booster.
Super predictable move.

Your local AT&T store has a GS5 out on the floor? That doesn't sound right.

Wow... Well hopefully the floor model isn't running final software and there will be an OTA before launch. I'm not going to freak out just yet.

If they disabled that feature then I think its time we start retaliating. I probably will send my pre-order back and go with the International version. The LTE networks are getting bogged down nowadays, while the HSPA+ network is doing great.

I'm going to head over to the biggest corporate store in the area tonight and see if they have a GS5 on the floor. If so, I'll try to verify it. If it's true, you can bet your ass I'm canceling my preorder.

I got my Nexus 6 from Google Play yesterday YA! i put my SIM in it and bingo 4G and service on Verizon! the one problem is I have no Data when on a phone call, I feel like I just went back a few years in time I'm reading i have to have advanced dialing 1.0 turned on, I was able to find this setting on my Verizon account and turned it on but 24 hours latter still no data when on a call
Thoughts?
Next question. Since I bought this phone outright from Google (ouch on my checking account) I have the freedom to move to any company. Sprint is out of the question since there service in Denver area is real bad. Dose AT&T or T-Mobile support Data and calling at the same time if Verizon dose not work for this?
Advanced calling 1.0 is not yet supported for the nexus 6 even if you turn it on in your account. Have to wait for vzw to enable it for this phone.

The Nexus 6 does not support Advanced Calling 1.0 on Verizon (yet). On AT&T and T-Mobile, I have confirmed that it works fine on both. Bummer, huh? But many of the new Android phones do not support this on Verizon (again...yet). Patience is not my greatest virtue, so I'm back to using my iPhone 6 on Verizon and my Nexus 6 on T-Mobile for that reason
Cheers,

It's fine near downtown, but gets crappy the further you go out. Head to the mountains and it's terrible.

Should i try AT&T first?
For Colorado I'd stick with VZW and ATT as they are the two reliable outside the Metro areas. Yeah, I'd try ATT before TMO.

Does anyone know if a specific app or firmware will be needed to be pushed to the phones to get their advanced calling feature, data and voice at the same time? Or, do they flip a switch and it will work already on the unlocked nexus 6? I am concerned that if I buy a job Verizon nexus 6 that it will one day not have a chance of going to me.

A software update will be required in order for VoLTE calling to work. No saying if/when that will happen.

I switched to T-Mobile from ATT and I couldn't be happier. Before that I had Verizon and so far I have no regrets my service is 7x faster then ATT LTE where I live. I tested my wife's S5 on LTE (ATT) it had 5mbs down and 1mbs up. My Nexus 6 on T-Mobile had 40down and 20up. Plus I can still use data while calling and its unlimited. These speeds aren't perfect, but I live in the middle of nowhere.
This should all be resolved once Vzw gets the N6 in stock on the 26th.
