Mine sound fantastic. It does depend on the source obviously as to how loud and clear they get. That being said I've never heard it fade up and down while listening to a movie, song, video, etc...
What phone are you coming from? I came from Nexus5 and the Nexus6 speakers rock!

What I've noticed is when I was using hangouts, the notification was a lot softer, when I leave the phone screen off and i received another hangouts message it is LOUD, so idk whats with the speaker volume ramping up and down
Yes, I can hear this too when I compare sound in headphones between Nexus6 and HTCOneM8

Yes, it sounds like some 'automatic gain control' or 'dynamic range compression'.
I don't understand why reviewers did not notice this issue.

Anyone found a solution for this or it just is what it is? Also notice the volume increases when I rotate the landscape view..then normalizes lower after a few seconds...
I've hard reset....flashed a fresh copy of 5.0.1 still no solution? Could this be a hardware issue?

same problem. stock non-root 64gb white. (and also terrible 2d performance as reported in other threads.)
the way to duplicate the misbehavior of the speaker volume:
go into settkngs/sound & notification.
simple raise the volume one notch lower than the maximum on slider next to ring volume.
once it set, the volume should loud and clear.
close the settings.
browser the phone or internet for a couple mins
come back to settings, touch the same slider for ring volume, without sliding it. the volume will be faded out/low.
touch the slider 2nd time: volume fades in/load.
but I can't duplicate the same behavior with other audio apps. only with ringtones and notification sounds

I had the same issue with my Nexus 6. Found a solution somewhere to disable the experimental nuplayer. Did that, rebooted - no good. But then I just turned the nuplayer back on for no reason. Sound is fine after that. It's been almost 10 days now, so I assume the effect is permanent.
Nuplayer setting can be changed from developer options.

Maybe a hardware issue? Someone mentioned applying equal pressure to the speakers. I tried it but didn't notice a difference. Just flashed 5.1, still nothing.
I'm noticing the landscape thing too.
When I first received mine (navy 32g, T-Mobile) I noticed the bottom speaker stuck out slightly more than the top, and it wiggled a little too.
Anyone notice something similar?
May be relavant to this issue, Do you guys have this issue ?
Received my brand new nexus 6 from carphoneware house UK & confirm that issue is still there. I can see distorted sounds when playing ringtones & Google voice search.
I upgraded to 5.1 but issue is still there so assume it must be some hardware issue.
Replacement handset on its way so lets see if it has same problem.
Had this problem when I first got my nexus ... its like the volume goes down to about what normally half sounds like sometimes even lower and at times fluctuates. I didn't have another phone at the time so I couldn't send it back and I hoped it was just a software problem but I have went from 5 > 5.1 > Chroma and even tried other things like switching nuplayer setting even trying Viper. Only have it effecting music (that I have noticed) :crying:

I have the same untill yesterday, I root my nexus 6 with the NEXUS TOOL from Wugfresh in less than 3 minutes... Then I install the CUSTOM ROM BENZO and Woala!
no more Audio Issues and its 10 times faster than original Android.. Incredible fast.
I purchase the nexus on Saturday, thank god!
I only have the issue of the sound being cut off for a second when I rotate the screen sometimes. Doesn't always occur. The device itself has a gain lock tho, to prevent the hardware being damaged.

there's a build.prop edit that supposedly fixes that (although l/r speakers will be reversed). I remember seeing it posted on reddit /r/nexus6 a few days ago, might want to search there if it bothers you.

Hi all, I know that I mentioned this in my other thread, but I thought that it should get more visibility. In short, my earpiece volume is extremely low, even when in-call volume is at maximum. It's almost inaudible, even in a quiet room.
I recently found an open tracker for this Issue:
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=80817
I'd recommend that anyone affected star this, so it gets addressed pronto.

FWIW, my ear speaker actually seems loud. Had to turn it down. Never had a Nexus device that had to be turned down. I'm still on LNX07M.
Interesting. I don't know if it's related, but I updated to the latest OTA. Hope it's not a hardware issue, as this is definitely not just a little low. It's like a whisper.
Speakerphone is booming though, so hurray for front facing speakers, I guess.
Thank you for sharing the open tracker
Mine was doing this also. What fixed it for me (not sure if this was a coincidence or not) but I turned on the speakerphone will in a call turned volume all the way down, turned off speaker phone and turned phone all the way down then up. Works loud and clear now. Strange though
add my feedback as well.

I thought I had this issue until I realized I was not putting my ear over the speaker correctly. I'm coming from the N5 so with this larger phone you have to slide it closer out to your forehead. Try again to align it better.
Similar issue here.
Though in my case, the earpiece is lower in all situations. When watching a video the earpiece will be lower than the bottom speaker. Testing each one individually yields the same results no matter which orientation of the device (left channel right channel test).

Same problem here on a 64 gb from T-Mobile.

I find the volume on the earpiece best when you treat the front facing camera as the earpiece.
Use it on my right ear and it feels weird, use it on the left ear, then it's perfect.
I know this isn't a solution, but if this helps, why not.

After reading this post I realized after having my Nexus 6 almost two weeks, I've still haven't used the phone...
I made a test call, and my earpiece is of adequate volume I actually had to turn it down a little.
BAD MOTO!!
first , its the most expensive nexus device and now the bug is in the MAIN reason phones exist!!
VERY Low ear piece volume, i gifted this phone to my dad and now i am getting it back coz he cant hear a thing, and is fed up of this phone :/ ... this has got to be the priority... i am side loading the OTA and updating to 5.0.1, will let you know if this fixes anything but just wanted to BUMP this tread its a major problem:crying:
I'm on 5.01 and the volume in the earpiece is still low. I mean I can hear it but if I turn it down past half you don't hear anything.
Same problem. Pretty ridiculous.
Just checking in, same issue here. I've tried to make sure I have the earpiece centered over my ear but I have to have the volume on MAX to hear it and even then, it's just not loud enough.
In fact, I've been putting the phone on speaker and turning it down and using it like the if I have any background noise in the room because I just can't hear on it.
My Samsung Galaxy S3 was MUCH louder.
When I first got my phone music and youtube videos were really loud with the built in speakers. So much so that I had to turn the volume down a little bit for comfort. Now when I make sound it starts out very loud but quickly softens drastically. Like something is trying to auto normalize the sound to a much lower volume.
What bugs me is it used to work great. I'm on the same firmware version and such that I was on before.
Is anyone else having volume issues with their built in speakers?

I'm experiencing this too. I feel like it was designed this way. But I want to see some documentation.
Maybe you're just adjusting to the volume?? Kind of like when a fast car doesn't feel fast anymore.
Are you on a custom rom?
I'm on Stock ROM.
I know it isn't me just getting used to it. When I play some music it is really loud and vibrates my phone noticeably. After about 1 or 2 seconds though it quiets and my phone stops vibrating as much and I have a hard time discerning voices in the sound.
If I pause the video for a few seconds and start again the same thing happens. really loud then quieting.
If I turn down the video all the way then turn it up all the way fast the same things happens. I can feel the vibrations of the sound then they lessen and quiet down.
Interesting. I tried it this morning after a fresh charge and it works great now. I wonder if previously I was always testing at night when my battery was low. Perhaps this is some kind of built in battery savings scheme? When I was experiencing the issue I verified that Battery Savings mode was turned off. But perhaps this is something that auto happens when the battery is low?
I'll have to try again tonight.
I'm starting to have the same issue. Posting here for any updates, and I'll update as well if I figure out what's going on.
Me to guys....I thought I was going nuts today... Every roms got quiet audio and I'm just like wtf...so I flash stock images and STILL its quiet...I'm just wondering if its some kinda power save feature.
i've been looking through the mixer_paths.xml file to see if i can find headphones and speaker values to increase to increase volume and this mixer_paths file is different than what i'm used to with samsung and LG phones. i'm probably missing some values to see because i normally use 920 text editor but that app currently isnt working with android 5.0. has anyone found the values to change the increase volume?
I have the same issue. If i reboot the phone everything sounds great then shortly after the volume drops and its difficult to hear things. This happens evem during calls while using speaker phone. I've looked in all the settings and can not find anything to do with this. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank goodness I'm not the only one! I have this exact issue as well.
So this actually worked on my N6 maybe it will work for yours. After a reboot problem remains. I applied small pressure evenly to the speakers with my fingers and bam problem gone. I seriously hope we don't have bad hardware. Hope this helps you guys as well.
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/add203215b?commentId=837982 If you see Moto's Official forum lot of other people are having this same Issue
Add me to the list thought I was going crazy too
I'm pretty sure it's a software issue. On mine, the volume does the normalization thing, but if I switch orientations it goes back to full volume before dying down again. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.
Same issue here. Thought I was loosing my mind. The volume goes down tremendously after starting music via the speakerphone after about 1 or 2 seconds. I have completely reset my phone and toggled the power saving setting and I'm still having this issue. Getting very annoyed.
Same issue here. My battery was down to 4% and the volume started getting lower some times.
Also it seemed like turning the device (display rotation?, gyro sensor?) had to do with it.
I also hear some noise (crackling) when the phone is at full volume and it's not playing music.

its a mostly aosp bug, you are missing files. itll be there until your roms fix the issue.

This occurs on stock and custom roms so if it's a bug then it's effecting stock too.
Just got my phone and i have the same sad issue.... When i play music through the speakers and turn the vol all the way up its loud then immediately fades to low volumes.
I cannot get a constant play of any media at full volume

I have the same issue on CM12. Couldn't comment on stock as I used it for all of 10 mins.
Seems there is some kind of audio normalization service running in the background. Doing a pretty crappy job of it.
Software issue it seems. I'm surprised there haven't been more reports of this. Its getting quite annoying. Finally I have front facing speakers on my phone and what does it do? Lowers the volume to half.

Just had this freaky thing happen to me today, for the first time since I've had the phone which I have had for over 2 months now. Stock and unrooted. It did not do it to me before today that I ever noticed so I don't know what to make of it. But I hope it may be software related but who knows.
I ended up RMA'ing my device and the new one doesn't do this on the stock ROM or third party (tested SlimLP) so I am thinking it might be more of a hardware issue. Will check to see if my 64GB MB does this as well, but so far the replacement phone has fixed this annoying issue and volume stays the same while playing youtube video's / music.
RMA was painless dealing with Motorola direct, even though I bought the phone through AT&T, and with Advanced RMA it only took over the weekend (RMA started on Friday afternoon) and the device showed up today. Couldn't have been more pleased with the ease of this.
Try viper 4 android. It fixed my volume issue.

I just bought a Nexus 6 - hope it doesn't have this problem.
I currently have this issue, volume is dropping more than 50% after like 2 seconds at full volume. From what I could read from all over the forums, it really looks like a hardware issue, it's pretty random. Guess my N6 is going back to my carrier as soon as I can get to them when they're open!
I was wondering if anyone else was having a problem with their speakers on the Nexus 6 when receiving calls or messages?
Randomly my ringtones & notifications come in crackling as if the speakers are blown. It doesn't happen much but it's kinda annoying. I think the speakers are fine because playing music or watching videos at max volume sounds great.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated
I have also had this issue. I'm running stock rooted with no mods. Would like to hear If anyone else is having this issue as well. Also would this issue be addressed in the new 5.0.1 update?
I am having issues hearing the conversion tone when sending or receiving messages via WhatsApp. The notification rings but within a chat it doesn't play any sound. Is this happening to anyone else? It's driving me crazy.
Same thing here. Especially with FB Messenger.
There definitely seems to be some static or degradation on some of the notification sounds and ringtones. I noticed the same thing.
I think it has an overactive EQ/Preamp type of ordeal going on. I think there is some sort of software built in that is trying to act like a DSP to save the speakers. For Example just turn up your volume to max and keep hitting the up volume. You will probably notice the volume beep will change volume several times throughout that. it will also be noticeable when playing music.
I have also noticed some strange crackling that I never had on previous Nexus devices. I am certain it is software and hope for an update to resolved it. I also noticed that many of the things going through the speakers slowly get louder. For instance, hit the speakerphone button while in a call and it starts at like 50% volume and goes to max in about 5 seconds. Kind of a strange fade up that I haven't had before...

I am having an issue with the stereo speakers on my Nexus 6. Every time I listen to music, watch a you tube video or watch a movie on my nexus 6 device, I notice that when I put it on maximum volume it will get loud then suddenly drop down to between 30 to 50%. anyone had this issue sorted yet. today i noticed while using speaker phone there is a static sound and low voice volume any ideas
Viper did not fix the issue
I'm thinking its hardware as I have tried stock and benzo ROM. Nothing seems to fix my low volume issue
Mine does this after flashing kernels or roms sometimes. A clean flash back to stock then reflash rom/kernal with extreme beats fixes it. I've had 3 nexus 6s and they all did this. Even when I flash stock image it don't sound quite right until I flash extreme beats 4.1. Viper has only caused problems for me.
Crackle is noticeable
I noticed the crackle sound straight out of the box simply by testing out some ringtones. This had me disappointed but even worse if I start to think I got a defective unit. It's weird because the problem does not happen very often and it's an issue that I can't demonstrate so easily, but it's there. Reading this post about people having the same problems makes me believe that there could be a update or software solution. By the way, playing music sounds great, the thing happens mostly with game sounds and ringtones.
After a certain amount of time, or opening a certain app, the phone will develop this annoying speaker pop on some screen clicks. I haven't figured out what causes it yet but it happens even when the phone is set to "total silence". A reboot always fixes it. I had my screen clicks enabled but have turned them off and rebooted and everything is fine now. If I figure out which app or circumstances cause it, I will post the fix.
I'm having the same issue. Happens during app launch for pretty much all my apps.

Reboot fixes it temporarily. If you notice it happens after the speaker goes dormant. If the speaker is making continual sound it won't do it. Once to goes to make its first sound after sitting, it pops. Even does it on silent. Don't know what is triggering it yet.
Supposedly someone has done a FDR and no longer has the issue.

I've noticed this as well. When scrolling through my FB or IG feed, any time a video starts playing (even with the sound defaulted to off), I hear a tiny lil speaker pop. It doesn't particularly bother me all that much, but I definitely noticed it.
I was thinking about it the other day and noticed it sounds a bit like a static pop. Kinda like when you plug a guitar into an amp when it's on. Might be some sort of initiation for the speaker. As long as it doesn't affect anything else or causes damage, I'm not too bothered by it. Especially hearing that it's as widespread it is.
hey guys ive figured out what is causing it but the solution might be some sort of software patch.
its the act of connecting to a BT device and then streaming audio like XM/Google music ect. once you disconnect the pop/snap sound appears on all things that activate the speaker. the twitter pull down is the best thing to test this with but it happens on all sounds from the first time you play a song/video to changing a ring tone ect.
here is a video of the sound. ive tried it on both my cars BT, a bose standalone BT speaker, and even and old FM transmitter and all the BT devices cause the pop once they are disconnected.
the reason why its happening is a little over my head but I was thinking something with DRM possibly?
another thing i discovered is it does not happen on the non Force regular Moto Z. I tested the exact same scenarios on it and it does no speaker pop
I was going to return my phone for another but this thread and a few others makes me think its a full on bug with the Force not a bad phone out of the box
ive tried a simple network reset clearing BT but that didnt work. before I try any luck with a factory reset or is it a waste of time?
Looks like this has been posted on the Moto forums https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Moto-Z-Force/Speaker-issue/td-p/3382728

I have confirmed today that it definitely is not "mod" related. I haven't had my JBL hooked up in 48 hours and there has been no pop. I drove to work today listening to music through my truck speakers using bluetooth. Pop is back. @MCN1SMO was right, it is bluetooth related. The only way out is to reboot. LAME.
Just my two cents on the topic, I am not having this issue, however, I do use bluetooth daily, my phone has been on continuously for almost two weeks now. I work outside so use the JBL speaker and have my phone in my shirt pocket listening to music while working. I keep it at about 80% volume for battery life. I am averaging about 6 hours of listening a day.
Also I have my bluetooth connected to the work truck (Ford Sync) to and from work which includes a 4 hour commute home on Fridays and back on Sunday nights to the town I stay in during the week. I have yet to hear any kind of pop from either the JBL or device speakers.
Personally I keep bluetooth off when I am not connected to a device I am not sure if this has any effect or not but it could be worth testing if you are able to replicate the problem. I have been taking off the speaker when not using it as well, but have left it on a few days.
I do also remember reading about an issue with Pandora and bluetooth. I am not sure if Pandora is what you are using or not, if it is try something else and see if the problem persists. I stopped using Pandora a few years back when I was a mechanic and had a bluetooth adapter for a code scanner for cars. If I opened Pandora I would have to reset before the adapter would operate normally.
