Speaker Volume Changing - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Speaker Volume starts loud then decreases. This happens when playing any media through speakers. I've tried different roms and the issue continues to persist. Has anyone else had this problem. Any feedback or solution would be greatly appreciated.

its a mostly aosp bug, you are missing files. itll be there until your roms fix the issue.

In having the same issue.
This occurs on stock and custom roms so if it's a bug then it's effecting stock too.

Just got my phone and i have the same sad issue.... When i play music through the speakers and turn the vol all the way up its loud then immediately fades to low volumes.
I cannot get a constant play of any media at full volume
I am completely stock unrooted
Any solutions? Or should I send this thing back?

do you know how to fix that ? any link to a commit or sth. ? building omnirom for myself, and i wasn't able to figure the problem out...

I have the same issue on CM12. Couldn't comment on stock as I used it for all of 10 mins.
Seems there is some kind of audio normalization service running in the background. Doing a pretty crappy job of it.
Software issue it seems. I'm surprised there haven't been more reports of this. Its getting quite annoying. Finally I have front facing speakers on my phone and what does it do? Lowers the volume to half.

if u can identify the service, cant we just shut it down or prevent it from running which does this horrible stuff
also I have noticed it happens at lower battery level not when its more than 50%

Noticed it today for the first time while playing a game

Just had this freaky thing happen to me today, for the first time since I've had the phone which I have had for over 2 months now. Stock and unrooted. It did not do it to me before today that I ever noticed so I don't know what to make of it. But I hope it may be software related but who knows.

I ended up RMA'ing my device and the new one doesn't do this on the stock ROM or third party (tested SlimLP) so I am thinking it might be more of a hardware issue. Will check to see if my 64GB MB does this as well, but so far the replacement phone has fixed this annoying issue and volume stays the same while playing youtube video's / music.
RMA was painless dealing with Motorola direct, even though I bought the phone through AT&T, and with Advanced RMA it only took over the weekend (RMA started on Friday afternoon) and the device showed up today. Couldn't have been more pleased with the ease of this.

Try viper 4 android. It fixed my volume issue.

I thought I was imagining this when it happened a few times, then I was blaming poor quality music streams but evidently there is an issue. It also happens occasionally with my headphones.

I just bought a Nexus 6 - hope it doesn't have this problem.

I currently have this issue, volume is dropping more than 50% after like 2 seconds at full volume. From what I could read from all over the forums, it really looks like a hardware issue, it's pretty random. Guess my N6 is going back to my carrier as soon as I can get to them when they're open!

[Q] Nexus 6 Speaker Issues

I was wondering if anyone else was having a problem with their speakers on the Nexus 6 when receiving calls or messages?
Randomly my ringtones & notifications come in crackling as if the speakers are blown. It doesn't happen much but it's kinda annoying. I think the speakers are fine because playing music or watching videos at max volume sounds great.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated
I have also had this issue. I'm running stock rooted with no mods. Would like to hear If anyone else is having this issue as well. Also would this issue be addressed in the new 5.0.1 update?
I am having issues hearing the conversion tone when sending or receiving messages via WhatsApp. The notification rings but within a chat it doesn't play any sound. Is this happening to anyone else? It's driving me crazy.
Same thing here. Especially with FB Messenger.
There definitely seems to be some static or degradation on some of the notification sounds and ringtones. I noticed the same thing.
I think it has an overactive EQ/Preamp type of ordeal going on. I think there is some sort of software built in that is trying to act like a DSP to save the speakers. For Example just turn up your volume to max and keep hitting the up volume. You will probably notice the volume beep will change volume several times throughout that. it will also be noticeable when playing music.
I have also noticed some strange crackling that I never had on previous Nexus devices. I am certain it is software and hope for an update to resolved it. I also noticed that many of the things going through the speakers slowly get louder. For instance, hit the speakerphone button while in a call and it starts at like 50% volume and goes to max in about 5 seconds. Kind of a strange fade up that I haven't had before...

I am having an issue with the stereo speakers on my Nexus 6. Every time I listen to music, watch a you tube video or watch a movie on my nexus 6 device, I notice that when I put it on maximum volume it will get loud then suddenly drop down to between 30 to 50%. I'm not sure what is the deal with that, but I can tell you its freaking annoying. Also been having issues with the fade in as well.
Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

anyone had this issue sorted yet. today i noticed while using speaker phone there is a static sound and low voice volume any ideas
Viper did not fix the issue
I'm thinking its hardware as I have tried stock and benzo ROM. Nothing seems to fix my low volume issue
Mine does this after flashing kernels or roms sometimes. A clean flash back to stock then reflash rom/kernal with extreme beats fixes it. I've had 3 nexus 6s and they all did this. Even when I flash stock image it don't sound quite right until I flash extreme beats 4.1. Viper has only caused problems for me.
Crackle is noticeable
I noticed the crackle sound straight out of the box simply by testing out some ringtones. This had me disappointed but even worse if I start to think I got a defective unit. It's weird because the problem does not happen very often and it's an issue that I can't demonstrate so easily, but it's there. Reading this post about people having the same problems makes me believe that there could be a update or software solution. By the way, playing music sounds great, the thing happens mostly with game sounds and ringtones.

Has anyone come across their notification and ring tones crackling when they go off. Now this doesn't happen all the time but lately is becoming more frequent. Software bug?

I definitely think the crackling is a software but and not a speaker hardware problem. I have the same issue, but it's only intermitten. And there are two or three other threads on here about people with crackling issues with lots of replies. I am hoping a fix may come down the road.

there was another thread on this i replied to, but someone mentioned they had the same issue. some people have it with the top speaker, some with the bottom. I get crackling in the bottom speaker... In order to not hear crackling, i have to press the volume rocker down 7 times which is insane.
i contacted Google via Google Play store and they are shipping out a replacement after some initial troubleshooting. The rep i spoke with advised it's not normal for crackling and it was the first she had heard of the issue.
One of the forum members in the other thread mentioned they got their replacement and compared the two side to side with someone else in the room just so he knew he wasn't going crazy. The replacement was 100% working, no crackle. Also he advised the new device shipped with the latest firmware on it so it would seem new batches are getting shipped...
ill be receiving my replacement monday and ill try to come back and post results.
Hope this helps!!

Yep same here. I've got my sms tone set to "Elara", and sometimes it starts ok and then gets severely garbled. It's almost as if some other background process is interfering with it. In fact I wouldn't mind betting that's what it is. Also sometimes when I send a viber or a fb messenger message it misses the first half of the sound it makes when you hit send.
Definitely something not right with it, and I agree, for a brand new 500 quid handset it's not on.
I am having the static/crackle issue with my calendar notification (doesn't always happen and I can reliably play the notification through the menu). I have posted a video of it on YouTube. This doesn't seem to be a hardware issue to me as it plays fine other teams and other audio (such as watching music videos) seems to play without fault.
Am not permitted to post links, but here it is with a minor edit.

I have already returned one phone and I still have the exact same issue with "new" phone. Even after the 5.1 update.
Intermittent crackling/garbling/static and occasional popping of some but not all notification sounds. I can not predict when it will happen at all.

same problem. stock non-root 64gb white. (and also terrible 2d performance as reported in other threads.)
the way to duplicate the misbehavior of the speaker volume:
go into settkngs/sound & notification.
simple raise the volume one notch lower than the maximum on slider next to ring volume.
once it set, the volume should loud and clear.
close the settings.
browser the phone or internet for a couple mins
come back to settings, touch the same slider for ring volume, without sliding it. the volume will be faded out/low.
touch the slider 2nd time: volume fades in/load.
but I can't duplicate the same behavior with other audio apps. only with ringtones and notification sounds

I had the same issue with my Nexus 6. Found a solution somewhere to disable the experimental nuplayer. Did that, rebooted - no good. But then I just turned the nuplayer back on for no reason. Sound is fine after that. It's been almost 10 days now, so I assume the effect is permanent.
Nuplayer setting can be changed from developer options.

Maybe a hardware issue? Someone mentioned applying equal pressure to the speakers. I tried it but didn't notice a difference. Just flashed 5.1, still nothing.
I'm noticing the landscape thing too.
When I first received mine (navy 32g, T-Mobile) I noticed the bottom speaker stuck out slightly more than the top, and it wiggled a little too.
Anyone notice something similar?
May be relavant to this issue, Do you guys have this issue ?
Received my brand new nexus 6 from carphoneware house UK & confirm that issue is still there. I can see distorted sounds when playing ringtones & Google voice search.
I upgraded to 5.1 but issue is still there so assume it must be some hardware issue.
Replacement handset on its way so lets see if it has same problem.
Had this problem when I first got my nexus ... its like the volume goes down to about what normally half sounds like sometimes even lower and at times fluctuates. I didn't have another phone at the time so I couldn't send it back and I hoped it was just a software problem but I have went from 5 > 5.1 > Chroma and even tried other things like switching nuplayer setting even trying Viper. Only have it effecting music (that I have noticed) :crying:

I have the same untill yesterday, I root my nexus 6 with the NEXUS TOOL from Wugfresh in less than 3 minutes... Then I install the CUSTOM ROM BENZO and Woala!
no more Audio Issues and its 10 times faster than original Android.. Incredible fast.
I purchase the nexus on Saturday, thank god!
I only have the issue of the sound being cut off for a second when I rotate the screen sometimes. Doesn't always occur. The device itself has a gain lock tho, to prevent the hardware being damaged.

Massive Sound distortion while listening to music

Hi guys,
since my Nexus 4 days I am always facing the same issue of massive sound distortions while listening to music. The same holds true for my Nexus 7 (2013) and bow the nexus 6.
When playing music (e.g. Via Spotify or poweramp) the music stutters including horrible sounds similar to a broken venyl as soon as I put a little bit of load on the cpu. While on my Nexus 4 the problem was also there when the screen was of or even during phone calls the latter is fine on the n6.
I have tried all kind of kernels, schedulers and governors, but i can't make this go away at all.
It's weird that I have the same problem on all my Nexus devices. Since I do not read about others having this issue I guess I must do something wrong.
Does anyone have an idea?
Merry Christmas ?!

Turn your EQ down or master volume down.
Or try flashing the zip for stock volume on your N6 i made a few days back - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57678105&postcount=77
Hi. Thanks for your help. I tried to follow your advice, but unfortunately it didn't help. It's not related at to my volume at all. Also I didn't tinker with EQ etc. all.
I also did a clean flash with stock kernel and just tried spotify. Same thing happened.
This is really weird since it's affecting all my Nexus devices and no one else seems to have that problem though.

Is it your headphones?
What music? Is it the same files across devices? That'd where I would start. If it's any and all music then who knows.. What app are you using....?
If it's persistent across multiple devices, the problem is most likely either your headphones or the quality of your music files. You could test this by listening to an album you have in both the format you have now and a higher quality (like FLAC) and see if there is a difference. Also, if you are editing your mixer_path's and/or using a sound modification, lower standard audio will have some distortion sounds depending on how high you set the numbers.
My setup is:
RHA 10TI Hi-fi NR earbuds
High quality music files (FLAC, etc. nothing below 320 if in lossy format)
HP and RX's set to 30 and 94, respectively
Hope this helps you out.
Hey guys, thank's for all your answers and I'm sorry for my late response. I am using spotify as my daily music app. But the problem also occurs on YouTube or regular mp3s using poweramp with different quality files. It can't be the headphones actually, because i have the same distortions when using the phone speakers. I haven't tried flac files though.
I am still somewhat clueless about that. I was thinking about a rma of the n6 but then why would it be the same problem on all 3 devices. Hmpf.
Thanks very much for your help!
I have the same problems with my phone no matter what app I use and when I'm on the phone to where no one can hear me. I rma mines this week and it was overnight shipping label from Motorola. So they will have my device this Friday 2/15. They told me I will receive a new phone in return. To be honest I didnt have this problem until I updated to 5.0.1
Hmm, I really do not want to do a rma though. What I have realized is that YouTube Videos also freeze for a milisecond as well as soon as the sound distortion 'kicks' in. Seems as this really is related to the cpu not bring able to handle the 'load'.
I flashed Euphoria rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development/rom-euphoria-os-beta-0-3-t2954615 and now problem is gone. No distortion sound anymore.

Nexus 6 speaker issue

Ok guys so I am having some terrible speaker issues on my nexus 6. Unlike the usual volume dropping at low battery, my nexus 6's speaker sounds like its at 20% even at full battery. My volume is 100% in sounds for everything (media, ringtone, alarms and notifications) but whenever I play anything via my speaker in play music, youtube, mx player etc, my phone will be fully charged but the sound from the speakers will be only 20% instead of the 100%.
Currently I am running the stock 6.0.1 unrooted. And yes I have already reflashed the stock rom twice already. I even rooted my phone again, and tried to manually boost the speakers via file and by editing the speaker file, but that also didn't help.
Any help would be appreciated guys.
You could try 'volume control plus' of Firestorm apps.
Hi. I also had the same problem. Usually this progresses to ultimate failure of the speaker. The top speaker is usually the victim. I mean to say that there is plenty of discussions about it and some people have tried many solutions; what worked for me, in the end, is a hardware replacement. I suggest if you have warranty to use it. If you don't have warranty then possible hardware replacement is eminent.
I have a similar issue (or maybe the same). When playing music and turning the volume all the way up, the speaker volume automatically decreases. It's as if the phone is protecting the speakers. There's no setting I can find to prevent this. When I either have external speakers or headphones plugged into the headphone jack, or when using bluetooth, the volume is fine at 100%. It's a very frustrating problem and I just haven't had the time to scour through these forums for possible solutions, so I'm glad this was a new post.
I downloaded the beats audio mod and fixed the problem for me

If this is what I think it is, it is not a hardware issue. Myself and others have posted in the past regarding this. Nexus 6 purchased in February brand new, started seeing this issue in March. Very similar. But for me volume would be stable at a certain level, normally below half, then when increasing the sound, seconds or minutes later it would decrease by itself and pressing the volume up would not do anything. Had this issue with a custom ROM and no audio mods as well as using V4A and Arise sound mod. Have yet to pin point what it is.

This is exactly what my Nexus 6 does. And, at this point I'm just glad it's not just my device. I bought the device used on Swappa and tested pretty much everything but didn't really notice this issue until a month or so later. I was wondering if I got a partially defective device. But it sounds like I didn't.
I have the same problem as most of your descriptions . it occurs at all battery levels. Speakers sounds fine no crack or pop. Top & Bottom for about 2 or 3 seconds, volume auto changes to about 40% of max. the power amplifier(s) may be the culpert here?
I been reading all over the net , Xda, Android police, Android Central & other's with N6 & some Sammy's having the same problems.
Hard to believe that there isn't a definitive answer? & to think,we were lucky enough to buy the N6? :crying:
