Note 4 or iPhone 6+

Hey guys my mind are messing with me, I'm so confused I had android since 2009 and now I'm thinking switching to iPhone 6+ bigger screen, I had all mobiles from HTC to Samsung, I'm afride If I'm going to buy note 4 it will be laggy on touchwiz plus they never update there phone, look at iPhone they update there iPhone 4 and it 4 years old, what do you think is this note 4 gonna be better choice?

Don't get me wrong I am not fan of company, I just buy what deserves to be bought and fits my requirement, but iphone 6+ is not worth the money that's for sure, you might buy it only if you're a big fool and love to show off an expensive sh*t to your friends, better go with Note 4. And what makes you call touchwiz laggy? I had the Note 3 I never saw any touchwiz lag and with new gen of touchwiz it should be butter smooth, tho I can be wrong as I haven't used the new touchwiz just yet but I feel it will be smooth and Samsung does updates their phone, rest your choice.

Stay with Android. Trust me.

If you're thinking about gettibg a iPhone 6 why not consider a nexus 4. ???

If they weren't so grossly overpriced (over $1000 with tax for the highest range 6+, I mean come on), I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the new iPhones. For pretty much everyone I know, their lackluster specs are all they really need. But seeing as how you're on XDA, the Note 4 is without question the better option.

I bought the 6+ and note 3 and to be honest it actually sucks. I have had iphones and note series from day 1.
The 6+ feels cheap. the siftware has issues. Not all of them are optimized so it feels like when the ipad was released. Apps looked zoomed in. I will get rid of this and get a note for sure. It just has so much more to offer than the iphone.

I don't care about phones getting dropped from updates after a couple years for a couple reasons. First off old devices on new software (I'm speaking about iOS) run like a bag of ****. My sister is using my old 4 and it runs like garbage. Secondly most people don't keep a phone for more then 2 years anyway so updates become irrelevant.
iPhones are great if you don't mind paying a premium for outdated hardware on a platform that is always behind Android. Apple does provide a fantastic warranty though, I'll give them that. Granted my S3 has never had issues and in my circle iPhones seem to be more problematic (that may not mean anything though).
For me Android is about flexibility and features that are years ahead of anything on an iPhone (for the most part). I'm patiently waiting to replace my aging S3 with a Note 4 because I believe it is the best phone of 2014.

If you get the 6+, all you see is a bigger screen, no more no less, now even with the big screen the quality is still not compare to the note4. The note4 which I have read many reviews, they all stated that it has zero lags (using snapdragon chip instead of Exynos) and the more you're going to use the phone, you will appreciate all the new features of the note4, like wide angle front camera, super smooth Spen, mutitask/multiscreen. Multitask/multiscreen is a big deal for me, imagine, while you on the phone talking, you could search the web, looking for something, circle it open messager, paste and send. Basically you could open multiple apps and flip through them like on your PC. Iphone is way lack of multitasking (none), this is one feature where note 4 is on the top. Now you should ask yourself, with the iphone beside a bigger screen what else can you do???

I thought about the 6+... no I actually stayed up, pre-ordered, but cancelled it. While 6+ is a very nice phone, I am pretty sure the next iOS update will cripple it. Apple is pushing for software optimization while staying 1GB of RAM, I have to say it is enough for now, but higher screen resolution and richer multimedia content will push the it to the limit, doesn't matter how they freeze the app while it is in background, the next time you relaunch it, it will restart the app instead of resuming it, the same problem we saw with earlier Windows Phone. The next version of iOS might even be more useful (common Apple, give us default app option, and lock screen rotation per app), I will stick with Note 4 for this year around.

I agree on that Sir, but I'm just tired of touchwiz being laggy and they don't support there phone like apple do, I've heard that google gonna take over the update for all android let's hope it true but again am 95% of buying the note and the 5% is the annoying 6+

I got the iPhone 6, not the + but I saw it in store today. Although it's a nice phone the note 4 is the better device without a doubt. Just put the hype aside, you'll see that the note is the clear winner.

The Note 4 was my next phone of choice. I have now seen the Plus. Tbh these phones offer a different user experience. One is not necessarily better than the other. There are features on both that are unique. It really is a difficult call. I want to see evidence of both cameras in use. Not available yet. And full features of both. But features versus user experiences are two different things.

Touchwiz on note4 is super smooth, no lags based on all the review I read. The beauty with Android is ton of options/customization, you always can just pick another launcher ) , throw in another feature to convince you - super charge 0-50% in 30min and super power saving mode give you 2 more days with only10% battery capacity left. The list just goes on and on...BTW, I believe Android L will be on note 4 when it released. Based on the history, the S3 which is 2 generation old and it's running on kitkat right now, so I'm sure Android L will be on the note 4.

Touchwiz will lag. It always has, and always will. That's not to say that the note 4 won't be great.. Samsung just adds so many useless features, and makes the ui look trashy.... So it weighs down the interface. I'm ecstatic with what the note 4 brings, and the fact that it releases on my birthday.. Happy birthday to me!! Ha! Also, L may not come to the Note 4. It takes Samsung too long to catch up to Google with firmware.. And then you have carriers that get their grubby hands on it. If it comes? Awesome! Just means it needs more optimization.. Cuz art

*** For anyone considering or thinking of a Nexus 6 ***
I realized very recently that the Nexus 6 is just not the phone that everyone is hyping it up to be.
I've been a loyal and die-hard Nexus fan since the Galaxy Nexus but also have always liked Samsung phones - particularly the Note.
In December 2014 I bought a Note 4, unlocked it and used it for a month until I was offered a great deal on a Nexus 6. I knew I was going to get one or the other but for some reason the Nexus hype bit me. I unloaded my Note 4 within 2 days and got the Nexus 6 and the honeymoon period didn't last long at all. The phone is a spec beast but that's about all it's got going other than the obvious "first to update" thing. While Lollipop is a joy to use, I can wait until the official release is out for NA Note 4 variants. I really don't miss any part of it and as for my usage, it didn't offer much over Kit Kat.
The phone is awkward to hold. I'm only 5'7" and can comfortably hold and use the Note 4 whereas the Nexus 6 is slippery and strange. That extra little bit of size on the Nexus 6 really kills it for me. After only a month of using the Nexus 6, I had to sell it and go back to the trusty Note. The Nexus was hard to sell too because there are only a specific group of people who really want it and know what type of phone it is. I realize after my month away from the Note 4, I should have never gotten rid of it in the first place. Even within the 1 month with the Nexus, I couldn't handle the size and I had to resort to using a spare iPhone 5 I have lying around. It really was a pain.
I'm glad to be back with a Note 4 and it feels normal again.
tldr; Bought a Note 4. Used it for a month and sold it to get a Nexus 6. Used the Nexus 6 for a month and realized it sucked. Went back to Note 4.

so its the size which forced you to switch back?

I love how good the note 4 feels in my hands and it feels like a solid phone.
I've used notes since the note 2 and don't think I will buy a different type of phone unless Samsung really mess up the formula.

Size and software. With size it also was the shape of the phone. Rounded was nice and the dimple did help a bit but I didn't feel comfortable holding it and typing with one hand like I do with the Note. Also, I kind of felt that with the Note 2, you get the large screen with added features. Spec-for-spec, the two phones are nearly identical. Add in the S-Pen and some TW features and you have a more fully-featured, well rounded phone.
I also find the camera to be better on the Note 4 - camera is a huge point for me and I fell for the Nexus hype again just like I did on the Nexus 5. They touted that the Nexus 5 camera was top notch but once I got it, it was really sub-par. Same with the Nexus 6 - the focusing was very slow and AI was just not there (I'm used to fast-focusing as I use a Canon 5D Mark 2 with fast primes) and the Note 4 really picks it up when you turn off HDR. It's not iPhone speed but it's way better than the Nexus, hands down.
I had a Galaxy S5 in my hands which I decided against because I really like the size and build of the Note.

I have both as well & the N4 does feel more comfortable to use.
The getting the latest updates thing that sells the Nexus, is it really all that?
I had the N5 & it didn't get all that many updates, the M8 got just as many, if a little later.
If lollipop is anything to go by, maybe getting the update first isn't such a good thing. Pure Android is very nice I do agree & TW is somewhat ghastly but with Nova Launcher on it's fine. Google's launcher is pants too. I use Nova on my N6 also. That permanent Google search bar is stupid, as is the stock dpi.
I do like the N6 but the N4 is far more palatable & feels more luxury in the hand.

You're exactly right about Nova Launcher. I've been using Nova Prime for a long time (maybe since I got my S2) and it's well worth it. My favorite is having 7 small dock icons.

On Nexus 6 Bluetooth quality is very poor compared to other top smartphones. Note 4 has very good quality with Headset and Car Hi-Fi.

This is good to know as I've been tempted recently to switch to the Nexus 6 myself. What's stopped me so far is that the 32gb Nexus retails for the same price as the Note 4 in my country. Factor in the extra features you're getting on the Note 4 then the Nexus starts to look like much worse value for money. I'd go back to the OnePlus One over the Nexus 6 any day of the week. The OPO is a much more worthy successor to the Nexus 5 in my opinion as it represents what the Nexus always has in the past - value for money.
Actually the only reason I went from the OnePlus to the Note 4 was band 28 lte, but now that I'm here I am really ☺.

After 2 months of use my Note 4 (SM-N910F) on 4.4.4 KK (stock) from a Note 3 (SM-N9005) on 4.4.2 KK (stock)
Pros:
- Camera, a lot better in all scenarios, Focus, Low Light, detail, was a very big jump and probably because of OIS (main reason to upgarde from Note 3 for me)
- Display, some people say 1080p to QHD dont see diference, i see, its mucth brighter and crisp and beautiful
- Desing of the Note 4 with metal edges, feel in the hand, very good looking phone
Cons:
- Battery, read a lot about display energy consumpsion, all wrong the battery drains a lot everytime i am using the phonne, 4 hours max screen on time
- UI general lag, 2.7GHZ?! The UI its very laggy, sometimes 1 sec to do what you want, compare to iphone 5S for example its a shame
- Sound, and dont understand why a top 2014 Samsung device like Note 4 dont have stereo speakers, the speaker on the back its very bad
- Bluetooth, i have a Samsung Gear and with the Note 4 some metters away one from the other and i got disconnected massage on my Gear

Sound, agreed that stereo speakers are overdue but I prefer the speaker on the back over the on the bottom of my old note 3. (which i covered many times just holding the phone)
Bluetooth, my gear live never disconnects if within ten meters (30ft) of my phone.

I honestly didn't notice much difference in bluetooth quality. I stream through Google Play Music and bluetooth to a JBL Flip 2 and and Beats 2.0 Wireless and it sounds the same to me.
Oh another couple of things that were a minor annoyance that turned into huge ones...
The rounded back made the phone spin when it's on a table. This makes laying it on a table and using it impossible. It was especially annoying when I had an alarm set to wake me up in the morning, it would spin all over the damn place when I tried to snooze it.
Secondly, the power and volume buttons were way too close to each other. I'd always end up hitting the wrong button when I wanted to lock/unlock the phone or turn up the volume.
Again they were minor annoyances which I thought I'd be able to simply get over it and I didn't think it would really affect my usage like it did.

....and warranty!! OMFG you should see the stories on Reddit about Motorola's warranty. It's absolutely terrible and disgraceful.
If you weren't lucky enough to be able to get your Nexus 6 from the Play store and got it direct from Motorola or a carrier, you were pretty much screwed. People with white 64gb devices that had to claim warranty were offered replacements that were blue 32gb. Some cases took weeks to replace and when the replacements arrived, they were more damaged that the one that was supposed to be sent back.
Canadians were particularly screwed as they don't offer RMA replacement services. They only offer RMA repair and on top of that the rep told me that some Motorola Canadian repair depots don't have the documentation or training on how to repair Nexus 6 phones yet (I chatted online with a rep in late January - things might be different now).

In Europe if you call Google support that you have a problem wit any nexus during warranty period, first time they will replace it for factory refurbished device without any questions, so I wouldn't contact Motorola. Samsung offers something similar: you can go to shop you bought it and they will replace it for new device but only within first two weeks after purchase.
Now, please don't understand me wrong , I love Note 4 and wouldn't replace it for Nexus 6 but only because of replaceable battery and micro SD slot and because I can install CM12 on it. TW ROM may have more stuff in it but it doesn't come even close to responsiveness of nexus devices. I still have Nexus 4 and even on TW lollipop Note 4 is slower. This is only if you bought it from the Google Play Store. Some people had to buy from a carrier because Google was out of stock.
In terms of responsiveness, it feels the same for my usage. I don't sit there and measure how fast it goes when I swipe my finger - that is not how I use my phone. I play Leo's Fortune and Hitman Go... that's about as crazy as I get and it works well. I don't see any noticeable lag. So when you say it doesn't even come close, I think you don't know how close it really is because it's pretty damn close if not exactly the same. I'm speaking from experience with the Nexus 6 and not from what I heard someone say on YouTube.

I am sorry but you are wrong about warranty, according to EU law you can choose manufacturers warranty or shop warranty. So if you decide to use Google they will help you, I am not assuming, I have done it without any problems.
I wrote what I experience on my devices nexus 4 vs note 4 and nexus 5 which I didn't mention before. I didn't say you saying anything wrong so please hold your comments about YouTube and my knowledge to yourself, there is no need for that, I am entitled to my opinion (especially it is based on experience) same way you are to yours.
From my EXPERIENCE responsiveness is in order: tw kitkat note 4 ->TW lollipop note 4-> lollipop nexus 4 -> lollipop nexus 5 -> cm12 note 4. So I have to disagree: in my case it is not close (closer if I use Nova launcher tough). I can see it mostly when I scroll on fb or big websites, it is not micro lag it is noticeable lag.
I do not own nexus 6 and there is slim chance it is slower comparing to nexus 4 and 5.
I am not trying to prove you wrong, just saying what I observed. I t is absolutely possible you have entirely different experiences and neither of us is right

How can you go through Google warranty if you didn't purchase the phone from Google? This is what I'm getting at. If you had to purchase the phone through a carrier - Google warranty will not help you here.
If you have not used the Nexus 6 as a daily driver then you, unfortunately, cannot speak from experience. I think you're just looking to be offended by something so I'll leave it at that. I'm not looking for an e-fight. Carry on, sir.

I have been always buying my phones from carriers and twice I have them replaced by manufacturer. Once it was Nexus 5, they send me replacement without asking questions (although you are right it was LG not Google, although they still offered factory refurbished straight away no idea if it is standard policy tough, possible it has something to do with my carrier), and second time it was Sony Xperia S which went for repair and they gave me a new one after they decided it could not be repaired. So I will repeat again You are entitled to manufacturers warranty even if you bought it from carrier. Well at least in UK they offer it without hassle. What I am trying to tell is you will always have 2 options when you buy it from carrier, carrier as a seller and manufacturer. Also from what you wrote is not a policy problem, but supply problem and Motorola is not the first to face it. You can find plenty examples how Samsung fails to comply with warranty claims, this is just a part of mass production, and is especially visible within first few months after release.
Sir I am not looking for a fight either ( I believed that comment about YouTube was directed at me, therefore my response), I placed my comparison to 2 nexus devices I own, I said I do not own 6, I even said it is possible it is slower . My point is I love Samsung devices, software not so much. And that is where Nexus was always shining - pure os. There was always plenty of phones better made then nexus, but none of them offered the same software experience, and I believe it still stands ( I do not need to own n6 to know that, soft on n5 and n4 is the same). I am sure there will be plenty people, as I assume you are, who will prefer TW over pure android. I am just not one of them. I prefer to by note 4 and install cm12 rather then buying nexus 6 because I believe note 4 is simply better hardware.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 that I got at launch. I came from a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and I was eager to try out a smaller phone after being on the Samsung Galaxy Note series since they came out. After being on the Galaxy S6, I can tell you that I miss a few things. First thing I miss is the larger screen size of the Note. I don't miss the stylus though as I never used it. I really do like wireless charging of the S6, but I am tiring very much of the lack of root on the Samsung devices.
All these things said, I have been looking at the Nexus 6 for a while now. It just seems like a great fit to me, and I have a buddy upgrade available on one of my family lines. I am concerned with the horsepower on the Nexus 6 though. It isn't that old in comparison to the S6, but maybe it isn't an issue after all. Anyone here move from a Samsung device over to the Nexus 6? I am on Verizon if it matters.

I moved from a S6 to a Nexus 6. Loved the camera on the S6 and the screen was very crisp as well. Honestly i hated not being on a stock android. There was lag everywhere. switching apps would take a while and if you installed a theme from the theme store it would be unusable at times. I got a good deal on the Nexus 6 also picked up a 64 gb version. Theres no lag while playing games either. It does heat up a little while doing some intense gaming , but thats nowhere close to how hot the S6 got from time to time. It will be the first to get the Android M update in a few months time. If you are comfortable with a big screen i thing you will love this device. Only thing i miss is the camera on the S6. Rest the nexus 6 on 5.1.1 is as good as it gets. Im sure people on Verizon would have had similar experience.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 that I got at launch. I came from a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and I was eager to try out a smaller phone after being on the Samsung Galaxy Note series since they came out. After being on the Galaxy S6, I can tell you that I miss a few things. First thing I miss is the larger screen size of the Note. I don't miss the stylus though as I never used it. I really do like wireless charging of the S6, but I am tiring very much of the lack of root on the Samsung devices.
All these things said, I have been looking at the Nexus 6 for a while now. It just seems like a great fit to me, and I have a buddy upgrade available on one of my family lines. I am concerned with the horsepower on the Nexus 6 though. It isn't that old in comparison to the S6, but maybe it isn't an issue after all. Anyone here move from a Samsung device over to the Nexus 6? I am on Verizon if it matters.

Besides the camera and the IR blaster you will not miss annything trust me I had the S6 for 4 days and sold it to use my N6 again. The lag, Touchwizz, bloatware and KNOX we`re too much for me and i will never again buy a Samsung device. I love the Nexus`s and especialy the N6 (size, stereo speakers).
Don`t think you will be sorry, but it takes a few days too get used to the the size but once you do you can`t go back to a small screen.

I made a short list of things that I missed about the Note series when I was on it and what I did and didn't miss. One of those things is the screen size. After being on large phablet phones for a while, I thought a downgrade on size would be worth trying out. That was a mistake. The stock android experience is something I am starting to miss as well. I have a Google Nexus 7 and I love this tablet. So easy to use and the stock android is pretty darn nice. Lastly, rooting would be nice to go back to but it isn't a huge deal. I have Foxfi which handles most of my rooting issues, but it would be nice to install adblock and other rooted apps. I don't know if I would use a different kernel. Samsung's stance on rooting is really pissing me off to no end.
Now that I saw the Google Nexus 6 lounge, I regret not putting this there. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

Thanks for your input. The size isn't a big deal to me. I miss the larger size of my Note 3 right now. I took the chance that maybe I would like a smaller phone with this S6 upgrade, and I didn't mind the size at first but now I am missing my larger phone. I really also don't want to go after a Samsung Note 5 either. I would wait 2 months for the Note 5 and I am not sold on the stylus nor the design of the device. Plus, the locking down of the Samsung device really does piss me off even more so now.
Oh, and I don't even use the IR blaster.
I really want to move to a phablet that isn't Samsung based for a change and the Nexus 6 appears to be my final destination.

There are a few things the S6 does better the the Nexus 6, I just switched back to the N6 after having the S6 since launch:
1 - It is snappier when doing data write intensive tasks. Unfortunately I like to have my devices encrypted so I pay the price on snappiness when downloading or installing apps with the Nexus 6
2 - The screen is a lot better. It is crisper (size/ppi) but it is also higher quality. Better accuracy, brightness... I could go on for days. The Nexus 6 is comparable to the Note 3 screen in accuracy and brightness (I had a Note 3 and 4 in the past)
3 - The camera is a ton better, no real comparison. The Nexus 6 has a good camera, possibly bordering on great its just not the outstanding that the S6/G4 are.
Otherwise when it comes to software and such it is amazing. I am running the M preview and am happy as a lark.

These are good things to know. A couple questions though.
Do you encrypt in case your phone is stolen?
Did you move back to the Nexus 6 because of the larger screen and/or was it the stock android OS?

I encrypt for a couple of reasons, Stolen is one of them.
Yeah stock Android is the main reason. I also really missed my big phone. I went from a Note 3 to Nexus 5 to M8 to Nexus 6 to Note 4 to S6 and while the S6 is the best phone I have ever owned and the Note 4 the best large phone, the software just didnt do it for me.
Android 5.0+ is just too beautiful to be hidden all the time by crappy skins or broken animations. I enjoyed some of Samsungs changes, like the allowing of a single non-play store app at a time without having to set Unknown Sources to always on, multi-window, app bubble things and a few others.

My wife has the S6, which is why I went with the N6. Love it. I love the lack of bloatware. S6 has the camera going for it, but that's all.

A lot of Samsung's extra features I really didn't take advantage of. The app bubbles were pretty nice, but I didn't like multi-window. It just wasn't that useful to me.
I placed an order for my Nexus 6 about 10 minutes ago. Back to stock android I go. I am going to update the phone and then root this sucker for sure. From what I have been reading, it isn't hard to do.

A question for Note 5 owners who previously owned Note 4

I know the title sounds weird lol but I actually would like to know what are the first impressions of comrades that owned Note 4 previously and switched for the new Note 5. Is the difference that great? I personally own the note 4 and I can tell yes, the note 5 feels a lot better in hand and performance wise on my end. Maybe because my Note 4 was the snapchat quadcore variant instead of the exynos? I am not sure but I definitely prefer the note 5. It makes me happy by just looking at how vibrant and crisp the display is.

Note 5 performance blows the 4 away. Night and day. And battery life is much better as well.

If you can live without the memory expansion and removable battery, the Note5 is MUCH better than the Note 4 in every other aspect.

The build quality is better for sure. The battery life doesn't "blow away" by any means, so don't think it will for a second. The performance is better but nothing to make you think foolish for still owning a Note 4.

The battery life is more than great... I get like 6 hours of screen on over a 20 hour day. That's excellent, and certainly at least 30% better than my Note 4 was. And the performance is day and night difference. The Note 4 lagged everywhere. The Note5, not at all so far.

Thank you all for the feedback. Im putting my hand on the note 5 today as I just received the black sapphire 32 gb phone. Will provide my experience after a day of my typical usage. It looks really promising before i even start using it.

So I have been testing the note 5 for a full day yesterday and it does really feels much smoother and fun to use than the note 4. The display makes you happy by just looking at it. It outperforms note 4 in playing heavy graphic demanding games and it is really fun using social media with. I like this device too much that I am not using my iphone 6 plus for the whole day, even for call quality I preferred the note 5. The design feels so premium in hand as well. I like the device.

It's simply better in every respect than the 4. My wife still has the 4 and it looks so dated to me. I used the move as an opportunity to go 'cloud' on everything and it hasn't impacted me one bit. In fact, it's more secure as an SD can be removed from a stolen device whereas a loss device can be remotely reset or can't be logged into. Battery has been fine although I tend to nervously charge at every opportunity! It's faster, snapier, smoother, more responsive, better screen, lighter, thinner and easier to hold, and the ability to unlock we just by touching the home button is the biggest benefit ever (as my work forces lock every time the device times out). It's by far the best device I have ever owned. And it looks fantastic!

Not being facetious, but what was your (previous posters) setup on the N4? Rooted, custom ROM, Xposed, etc?

Thanks for your responses. Just trying to put your comments in perspective.

ATT stock rom, unrooted. Same on both devices.

All I have to say is that it took a couple of OTAs for the note 4 to have the bugs and smalls problems ironed out. The Note 5 was amazing out of the box. I am very happy with my note 5, although my note 4 is my second favorite phone

second consecutive day using the Note 5 and it is really much better than my Quad-Core Snapdragon Note 4.

Speak for yourself. The AT&T Note 4 had hit or miss GPS that was made better and worse but never good with multiple updates. One of the updates caused my battery life to drop by about 15% and it was never awe inspiring to begin with. The W8 versions are practically carrier unmolested which is why your experience is probably different than mine. I loved my Note 4; there was nothing out there that I thought was better. But, at least the way I use it, the Note 5 is in a different league.

Mine was stock at&t. I forgot about that awful gps. I even got a replacement from att because of it.

So we're still talking about stock unrooted?
I just say this because I'm considering my next device, and I know some people with N5's that are happy with their purchase, and I know some who aren't. It seems to boil down to this: Comparing a stock N5 to a stock N4 is obviously no contest, as Samsung doesn't optimise their devices to their full potential... (Gotta love planned obsolescence) But as a rooted N4 user running a custom ROM that transforms my entire user experience, I wonder if the performance chasm that is being described is truly that vast...
Edit: And I have held the N5 in hand... I'm certainly not bashing it - it's a beautiful device. But I feel Samsung left so much on the table, and didn't really improve a device that was poised to truly dominate the market.

Well I was a nay-sayer to the Note 5 (I was going to avoid it at ALL costs). That was until my Note 4 speaker blew (factory warranty replacement) but since they didn't have any Note 4's in Stock where I went they told me that I was getting a Note 5 for free. I was hesitant and was going to deal with the blown speaker until they could get me a Note 4. However, the person at the store convinced me to at least take the Note 5 in the meantime and at least give it the 14 day trial. So, I did... I must admit I love it, I don't miss the SD card slot, though I am still looking into a secure cloud service. I have noticed the reception I get from the tower (Sprint service) is way stronger than the Note 4 I had in the same locations, and side by side comparisons with my wife's note 4 holds true to that statement as well. I have never been one to switch out batteries, so that was never an issue anyways.
TL;DR: Note 5 > Note 4 IMHO

Yep. I connect to secure networks that don't allow rooted devices on. I also didn't want to obliterate Samsung Pay and other apps that can't be root cloaked that read device status.

Assuming you're able to mimic the same custom environment on the Note 5 it'll still blow your Note 4 out of the water. Software can't take the place of a more modern and powerful SoC, uber fast memory and storage, and more streamlined and lighter stock apps and UI (assuming you're using any).
And I have held the N5 in hand... I'm certainly not bashing it - it's a beautiful device. But I feel Samsung left so much on the table, and didn't really improve a device that was poised to truly dominate the market.

What's really left design wise? The display sets the shape of the device so the only thing to play with is bezel size and depth. To support wireless signals and control weight material choices are metal, glass, and plastic. So no matter who makes a phone it's going to be a slab of glass on the front and made out of metal, glass, and/or plastic. HTC's dual front speakers didn't sell phones. LG's bizarre control placement and KnockOn didn't sell phones. Sony's waterproofing didn't sell phones. Apple's 8MP camera, iterative designs, lack of expandable storage, and fixed battery didn't prevent phones from being sold. Welcome to the "mature" smartphone market.

Nexus 6 or Note 4?

Hey guys,
I just sent my note 7 back and I need a "new" phone. :crying: I am using the G5 atm but I am not a fan of it and will return it.
So now I am on the fence between these two phones. I just need a good, reliable one to tide me over till the s8 comes out.
Which one should I get? I could get either one new for like 300.
I am leaning towards the Nexus 6 since the Note 4 isn't being updated anymore.
The only thing that bothers me is the lack of an Sd slot but I can live without that.
What do you think? Nexus 6 or Note 4?

If you're familiar with the Note 7, going with the Note 4 might be best, since you're likely used to using the S-Pen. However, as you note there isn't any more support for it, even though I'm sure custom ROMs can take up some of the slack.
Is the S-Pen more important than the Nexus 6 receiving an update to Android 7.1 in the near future?

There are two versions of the Note 4, the Exynos one and the Snapdragon one. There are no custom roms for the Exynos.

@istperson: True about Exynos, and I admit forgetting that. However he should answer, at least for himself, the question I asked above. If the S-Pen is more important than updates, he'll want a Note 4. Otherwise he'll want a Nexus 6.

I have to say the N6 is a great phone in my opinion. It's fast and the stock ROM is pure android. You get nougat too if that's important to you. Plenty of ROMS to play around with. I'm running pure nexus 6.0.1. from August and it's damn near perfect. The screen is large and the dual front speakers sound good. Quickcharge is great if you use it alot. Wireless charging is pretty much crap. Lack of SD card sucks. It's heavy and huge. For gaming it's great and battery life is good (not great). It can be had on Swappa for around $175 if you want to save some money. I've long been a gadget geek and part of that is me swapping phones often. I've had many different ones, but I can't seem to find something that justifies giving up the N6. I really want to buy a new phone but the N6 is so good, I can't seem to find something that is worth spending more money on.

N6 hands down....come get ya some Nougat!

Nexus 6 hand down, the repair shop I help manage have been getting the n6 for less than 200. I got our sales guy to get one, and now he and I have convinced over 10 people to buy them this month nexus 6s to people in the last month. We are getting 4 more in to sell as well lol People see my phone and they love it!

So I just got the Nexus 6 and the Note 4. I was immediately more impressed by the N6. It's so huge and looks so amazing. I also just downloaded Nougat. I feel like the Nexus charges faster than the Note. I am gonna pop a sim card in and use both phones for the next week.

I use a 3 coil wireless charger and have had no issues. Yes it charges slower, it also keeps the USB port from getting banged up that much faster.

So I am ending my project prematurely. The Note 4 is hella laggy and just pure **** software wise. I bet it would run flawlessly if Samsung supported it but I don't have the nerve to deal with this overheating, laggy mess.
The Nexus 6 is really nice, the only thing that bothers me is the awful front camera, the kinda average battery life and the below average rear camera.
I really like Nougat and I think the Nexus 6 runs flawlessly. I wish Google would extend the OS updates. It's marvelous. I love the huge screen. I regret not getting this phone earlier lol. It feels so good having the latest Android.

I had both, Nexus 6 HANDS DOWN!
I just switched from the Note 4 (snapdragon) to Nexus 6.
First off, 2 years ago i was deciding between these two devices and I chose the note 4 because I didn't want to give up the s pen or and the LED notification light. However as android evolved from kitkat to marshmallow, I ran into major problems with rooting. Note 4 ran best on kitkat. Once I went lolipop I had to disable SecurityLogAgent via systemapp remover in order to salvage my root otherwise knox would bootloop. I also found that once I went MM, I ran into some pretty big problems such as mmc read fail errors, boot loops, screen not waking up, the list goes on. I bought a few new batteries as well to rule out that possibility. Now some of these could have been hardware related as I did wipe out on my bike quite a few times with the phone in my pocket (otterbox commuter case), but from what I've been reading, I wasn't the only note 4 user with these issues. I honestly believe the knox bootloader and knox software deliberately screws up your device if you root. It got to the point where I smashed my note 4. My note 4 wouldn't even wake up and activate my alarm clock, to wake me up! unreliable! No matter what I tried, even running it on bone stock, the same problems kept happening. I did not bother downgrading back to loli, or kitkat because I wanted to keep the latest security updates.
Performance & First Impressions
I got the Nexus 6 as a temporary phone since I was considering going Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra. Yet once I held the Nexus 6, and analyzed how it is bone stock, I instantly fell in love with the device. I like the slight bulk at the back of the phone which adds a good feel in my hand. I don't like thin phones. They are very slippery. A plus to Motorola for this ergonomic design. Good weight and a great feel.
Not only are the direct OTA updates from google so CLEAN, but you get the latest of the latest! Android 7 Nougat is bloody amazing!!! holy %#$#$^%! You can't get any cleaner stock rom than the google OTA releases. Literally half a page of apps installed in your app drawer.
The true beauty of this device is how easy it is to root/modify/customize. Once you unlock the bootloader, you're good to go. No knox or any 3rd party app screwing with your stuff.
Both are snapdragon 805 but the Nexus is clocked way higher. The Nexus also has a better screen. Larger, higher PPI and I think it's brighter too. Front facing stereo speakers are quite nice. The little speaker on the back of the note 4 is no comparison. Games run better on the Nexus 6 due to a higher clocked CPU.
With root, you can activate the hidden LED notification light behind the top speaker. You cant get it to blink though, but I'm okay with a solid light.
So what does the Note 4 have over the Nexus 6?
Note 4 battery life is definitely better. Note 4 camera is also better. Nexus 6 has zero image stabilization. The Note 4 also has external storage (micro SD slot) where the Nexus 6 relies on 32gb (or 64gb model) internal storage only plus whatever space you have on your google drive. Note 4 has removable back, easier to replace the battery although it isn't too hard to do on the Nexus 6.
Repairing
I've taken my Note 4 apart at least 3 times and boy what an annoying task it is. You see, samsung designs their phones in ways where if the user attempts to open them, you risk severely damaging your samsung phone. The older samsung models didn't have this problem. For the note 4, you risk tearing a a few ribbons and your antenna if you don't pry the screen from the bezel properly and very carefully. You have to know where these ribbons are prior to opening the Note 4. Note 4 screen replacement is also very annoying and you need new adhesive to re-seat the screen properly after disassembly. So basically, You really don't want to take your Note 4 apart unless you really have to.
The Nexus 6 however, is super easy. The back is just a sticker held by adhesive. Once that comes off it's just like the older phone designs. After few screws you have easy access to the battery, and very easy screen replacement. The only ribbon you have to worry about when prying off the back sticker is the one connected to the battery. You have to be in pretty deep to hit it though in my opinion.
Conclusion
When I was choosing between these two devices two years ago, I should have gone with the Nexus 6 instead, period. I plan to use a custom kernel with CPU governor in attempts to de-clock the CPU for certain profiles in order to gain more battery life. Nexus 6 battery life is quite bad within heavy usage. Other than that, the Nexus 6 is the best power-user phablet you could possibly own as of this day.

I laughed when I read that, especially that 4 screws got stripped when I was taking them out. Luckily a t4 bit was able to get them out easily. I haven't really had any problems with Samsung screws getting stripped when I repair them at work.

I have both phones, both with root access/unlocked bootloaders. I switch between the two frequently mainly because the Note 4 has better cameras and wifi calling (Verizon) and the Nexus has no wifi calling (for Verizon). I live in an area with very low signal and drop calls often.
But with that said, I use the N6 most mainly because it "feels" faster to me. The Note 4 is a fantastic phone though and I would be perfectly fine using it, especially now that it has an unlocked bootloader.
