December 17, 2014 OTA 5.1 arrive at my Google Nexus 5 running stock, no root.
You are a little lost. Is 5.0.1 not 5.1. Be carefull with your writing.
just downloaded and installed.... only to get ...
"error"
plus a picture of an android lying on its back
phone unresponsive
a few minutes later it rebooted, still in 5.0
Yep, 5.01 OTA came to me about 1 hr. ago and installed with no issues!
EDIT: Sorry, should have stated my N5 is completely stock.
Yep. Got my update about an hour ago also. No issues.

I'm pretty sure you need to revert to stock, unrooted and locked for the ota to work without issues...

I've never rooted my Nexus 5 (embarrassed to say)... first device that I didn't feel the need to
I've now got tons of spare space... 3rd attempt... downloads, starts to update, wait 20 seconds, then a nice picture of an Android on its back and an "Error!"...
You could try wiping your cache partition before trying again?

Don't be embarrassed! Like you, I never felt the need to with my Nexus 5... my previous HTC Desire and HTC Desire S however were another story... I just hate HTC Sense with a passion after using the Nexus!
Tried 2 sideload OTA (adb reboot bootloader, then (when my Nexus 5 is in recovery mode and after tellin him "apply update from ADB") adb sideload 785a2f7af3718dba7e569decde8b6c4dc476a309.signed-hammerhead-LRX22C-from-LRX21O.785a2f7a.zip) , Error !
Unroot usin supersu unroot, Error !
Google sent me OTA by air (3 times), Error !
In order 2 wash without data loss, I tried Skipsoft Android Toolkit washin, then I put out android Avast (then sideload again), Error !
I wiped cache...
Then Google sent me OTA (4th), Error !
Do U know some right way (except factory reset) ?
Got mine a few hours ago and installed without issue. its tough to say if it fixed anything since I wasn't having any real issues outside of Chromes performance being terrible and the occasional screen redraw. Seems faster but that might be placebo or just that my caches were cleared with the update.
Worse is I kwow where is the bug : reading /cache/recovery/last_log.x tells that :
.../...
Verifying current system...
failed to stat "/system/bin/install-recovery.sh" : No such file or directory
etc...
(Somebody stole file before...)
As far as I know you must not have custom kernel, custom recovery or be rooted for the OTA to be applied correctly
Got mine this afternoon, in BC Canada only 13.3 mb downloaded and installed with no issues, stock, no root, unlocked boot loader. I always wait a bit after a major update before doing anything to my phone since you know the bug fix is always coming shortly after.

I'm reading the threads and seeing a consistent pattern (and experienced it myself). Referring at least to 4.1.2 -> 4.2 and 4.2 -> 4.2.1, it seems that you can do the OTA update if you if you have CWM but not TWRP. If you accept the OTA and have CWM, it will reboot into CWM, apply the update, ask if you want to preserve recovery and su, and reboot you into the new version.
If you have TWRP, though, it seems people get stuck at error 7 or similar.
When a larger version comes out in the future though I suspect we'll have to flash by hand as the OTA could blow away custom recovery; but for the two mentioned above at least, it wont kill CWM and installs fine with it in place.
I've loved TWRP in the past, but in this case it looks like CWM is handling the OTAs more gracefully. It's just a random chance that I have the latest CWM on my N7 instead of TWRP.
I have never used twrp, but I have done the last updates through cwm recovery and kept recovery and kept root. Definitely recommend cwm recovery.
I just got the OTA here, on TWRP 2.3.2.1, Nexus 7 no 3G. No errors, just worked.

I really don't understand why people are having such a hard time understanding what is wrong when they receive an error message with the OTA update.
It's not complicated people. You don't need to be a friggin' brain surgeon or a senior level developer. The error message TELLS YOU what the issue is.
Verifying current system...assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/SOMEFILE")
Guess what? Something is wrong with SOMEFILE. You either modified it, deleted it, "froze" it in TiBu, or did something else that is causing the update to break.
If you look at the updater-script, you can see everything thing the OTA does. It's just a long batch script basically.
The ONLY way this 4.2.1 OTA update is going to fail due to recovery is if you are using the wrong recovery for your device (ie: grouper on talapia, etc.).
I hear what you are saying but....my N7 is stock, untouched, unlocked & rooted, yet I had problems with CWM & TWRP with the OTA and flashing the update manually.
I had to go back to stock recovery for both updates.
But I can see in this thread some have the OTA update working fine, one thing we all have in common is the N7, yet varied results.

I hate to be the hater, but why would anyone here take an OTA? The reason this site exists is specifically to help people to not use the stock software. If cwm survives OTAs it is probably an accident, lol.

What are you talking about?
XDA is in no way a site dedicated exclusively to "help people not use the stock software". It's a place where people can discuss their hardware/software including stock/custom/etc. usage and modifications. So not only is your comment 100% incorrect, but it's also contrary to this thread in particular. The thread title clear talks about using a CUSTOM recovery with an update to the stock software. So even if you were right (you aren't), your point is counter-intuitive.
There are many people here that are either mostly or completely stock. That's their personal preference and it's completely fine and acceptable. And it most certainly doesn't mean they don't deserve help or assistance here.
---------- Post added at 03:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:13 PM ----------
Also, while OTA updates are written in such a way to remove suid root on the su binary and reinstall the stock recovery image, most new custom recoveries have a work around in place to prevent this. Not to mention it's trivial to restore them back after the update.

No accident ... I updated my N7 from 4.1 to 4.2 still rooted.. And I just updated again to 4.2.1 ... Don't know about you but I love these kind of updates
Also I like my devices stock, rooted and a few tweaks here and there along with rooted applications... I'm sure there are many of me out there.

I prefer to never actually flash the recoveries.. just adb boot them as required - that means my system is always stock for the updates and I can pick a recovery at random should I want them (although generally I only use them to get a root shell to install su when I get a new phone).
I am rooted stock with cwm touch and the ota fails staus 7. I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything to "break" the update for myself. It's kind of funny the clockwork stops and asks about flashing an untrusted rom and then doesn't allow it. I would rather sit out of this whole 4.2 bs anyway.
I was rooted and stupidly just clicked the update to 4.2.1 without thinking, it didn't even occur to me to take any measures to keep root or custom recovery. So I lost both. It only took a few minutes with Wugs' toolkit to fix though.
I've taken three OTAs with TWRP and had no problems with any of them.

You could always revert back to stock using the Revert Thread here in the General Section. You'll go back to 4.2.2. And then you can take the OTA, then you can root while being on 4.4.2.

You can revert to stock and let the phone take the OTA then re-root with ioroot25. Back up anything you want first this completely wipes the phone.

Here's what I just got done doing:
OTA failed
*Put back original hotspot, unfroze any apps I had in Titanium Back, reverted xposed back, tried OTA again...Failed
Went with the LG installer: Took forever for drivers to load and show up (10 min). Running on Windows 7. LG installer loaded with phone and it took 45 minutes to take the 2gig update. The update took and it didn't wipe out any of my apps or data, etc. Lost Root
Went here and restored root. Phone is up and running.
I am assuming you are either having a driver issue or a connectivity issue with your G2 to computer.

My Note 3 is 4.4.2 and rooted with towelroot. I have SuperSU and Titanium Backup installed. But everything else is still stock, didn't uninstall any bloatware. No recovery installed. I already unfrozen everything by TB. However, after getting the 4.4.4 OTA, the phone went into recovery installation and restarted at 27%. After the restart, it just said the OTA installation failed. unroot with SuperSu, and deforeze all ATT bloatware and Samsung stuff (including knox), simply you need to revert it back the way it was before the root. then give a try. I don't think it is necessary to flash back firmware with odin since you just have root and frozen couple of apps.
remember, if you installed busybox and exposed, make sure uninstall them, anything that touches (busybox, exposed) system files will abort OTA upgrade.

It will always fail at 27% if you are rooted. You have to open supersu and go into the settings, scroll down until you find unroot. If successful supersu will just close. Reboot and try OTA again.

No problem. I find the update has brought some performance back to my note 3,but I haven't been able to test everything thoroughly. I loved the Note 3 when I first bought it, then AT&T screwed it up with the 4.4.2 update.
Another thing to remember with the failing OTA updates. The phone has to be STOCK, that includes all of the AT&T bloat as well. This isnt 100% of the fails, but this sure will cause it too
Thanks to carl1961's "Home" file I was able to install the update. Still wondering what was wrong with BestBuy flash.
I was towel rooted a while back on 4.4.2 and I removed root but mine also failed at 27% when i was trying to install 4.4.4. I even tried wiping cache and resetting the phone with no success. If you want to go the LONG way, I followed this guide, which I lost all settings and apps, but I was able to upgrade to 4.4.4 afterwards. I downloaded the 4 separate files and used ODIN that is also provided from a link in the guide to reset the phone. The ODIN options I used are in the picture titled "Odin 4 File Install" and I didn't follow any further steps after I did the 4 File install. I simply configured the phone and went to check for updates and it installed 4.4.4 successfully. Then I restored my apps and app settings manually. Like I said this is the long way and it's not guaranteed to work but it did in my case!

I rooted my phone a while back (Note 3) and have Safestrap on it. I checked with root verify and it says it is rooted.
I want to be able to do OTA updates as I don't really want to be rooted any longer or have safestrap on my phone.
Is there a EASY way to remove both/all of it so I no longer get the safestrap screen when it comes on that has the unlocked symbol at the bottom of it. And no longer have a rooted phone ?
Easy way, preferred as I stated before..
Saw this and giving it a try ! ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/help/4-4-4-ota-failed-27-t2949069
Well used Super Su, it says I am no longer rooted. But safestrap still shows on start up
And after I did that I checked for a update. It shows v4.2.2 and no available updates ? WTH.... It showed a update before...
Idk either I unrooted and uninstalled safestrap and factory reset my update trys 2times both times says updated failed
is safestrap realy there. i had the same problem and installed traingle away and it removed the safestrap screen.
To Un-root your phone
You'll need to use Odin. After using Odin it will still say custom after the first boot, just re-boot and you'll be good.
I used Super SU, and unrooted. Did check and it says I am not rooted.
But I think the reason it is failing to install 4.4.4 OTA update, is that the safestrap is interfering with the installation..
So if I want to get safestrap completely off of my phone how do I do that > I have been searching the forum, and still searching,,,

Lol you might as well not be on xda if you going to go stock with no root. 4.4.4 OTA official is like a death sentence right now. And you will be hitting your forhead wishing you didnt do that later.
But to answer your question, just uninstall safestrap from the app, and use supersu for full unroot. Or just Odin back with NC2 tar files from the threads. Odin back to NC2 should be no problems with the OTA

That is kinda weird in SuperSU did you disable OTA updates?!? But y you want stock 4.4.4 rom, as AT&T note 3 users there may not b a root or boot rom walk around for long time maybe even tell lollipop 5.0 or maybe never cause note 3 has been dead silence since 4.4.4 released almost like people stop using this device an goin to the note 4... Hopefully there will b a note 3 bootloader exploit for AT&T an verizon but idk again looks like main force is note 4
Well not sure how to fix it.
I have unrooted, removed safestrap.
Checked with root app and it says it is not rooted.
But it still won't update.
Took to AT&T tech center after on-line help from them didn't help. He was not able to update it. So I went to Bestbuys Samsung tech section. They hooked it up to their Smart update software, and it would not allow to be updated either. They said it was either rooted or had a foreign version of software on it. Or one of the software apps I had installed was messing it up.
So I again did a hard reset all the way back to stock ? And after setting up as a new phone I did a check for update 4.4.2 was on it and it said no update available......
SO WHAT IS GOING ON ? Is there a 4.4.4v that I can install with the odin, so that hopefully I can get over this bump..,, ?

Thought I'd let those of you that have an AT&T Tab S 8.4 know that Lollipop has been released today. Happened to be on the AT&T Software update page here: http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB425812&cv=820 and noticed it listed the update.
Manually checked for updates on my tablet, it's downloading now. My 8.4 on AT&T is totally stock.
Downloading now... 1.1GB
manually checking shows nothing for me
Mine wasn't too laggy after the upgrade. But as I know from places like XDA usually a very good idea to do a full system wipe which I did.
What I am most thankful for is there is now an option to remove that Samsung screen that has those Samsung widgets that go full page. Can't recall what it is called. Yeah I know could have got rid of that using a 3rd party launcher in 4.4 but so happy Samsung put option there to disable it finally. To get rid of it, long press blank space like you were going to add a widget, then click Home Screen Settings, then uncheck "Content Home Screen".
Has anyone who rooted with kingroot updated? I'm assuming it'll kill root, just curious if I need to unroot prior, or if the update will still install. I'll post the answer tomorrow after I update.
I've had some Samsung devices which will update while rooted, and some that will not.

Not sure it will work.
Maybe try to adapt the method given by ashyx here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/guide-how-to-root-tripping-knox-kitkat-t3129484
It worked successfully for me on the T800

I'm rooted with Kingroot and it's currently downloading the update. If you load Xposed Framework and Wanam Xposed, under Security hacks there's a setting for Fake System Status that allows you to set it to Original.
I'll follow up when the download finishes.
Update: The download completed but the install failed and then got stuck in a boot loop. Ended up having to go to the Samsung place at Best Buy to have them re-flash KitKat. Now the tab is telling me I have to wait 24 hours to check for updates. I'm sure everything will be good now that I'm back on a factory image.

Turn off automatic date and time and manually advance it by a day, and try again.
When they re-flashed KitKat did it wipe your tablet? The OTA failed me when rooted, failed me after un-installing adaway and un-rooting and removing KingUser. I cannot do a firmware upgrade via Kies 3 as it's not available. I cannot do an emergency firmware recover via Kies 3 as it's not soft bricked. I can't find either the KitKat or the Lollipop firmwares online anywhere... Currently I have a tablet, works fine, I did a factory reset (in the back of my mind knew this wouldn't work) that has a custom status and won't take the OTA.
If anyone knows where I can find the KitKat firmware, or the OTA, please let me know.
Or maybe someone could grab the OTA off their tablet after downloading prior to updating and share the wealth with the community???
Has any kingroot user tried triangle away, unroot via kinguser, and take the OTA?
Also just realized that if I can fail the OTA, I can obviously download it... Where do I grab it from if I wanted to flash it with odin or sideload?

OTA came down successfully while not rooted. The reflash at Best Buy didn't wipe it.
As far as I know, the factory images for the AT&T versions aren't available anywhere, or at least I've been unable to find them. They obviously exist because I'm pretty sure the guy at Best Buy used Kies to flash with an image that's available to him from Samsung.
I re-rooted last night in the attempt of using triangle away to clear customs status, then un-rooting. This was odd because device status still shows custom but download mode shows official and Knox is 0.
While I was briefly rooted again I downloaded the OTA in the hopes of copying it to my PC and updating via ADB Sideload... Couldn't find it. If anyone knows where Samsung puts these I'll grab it and post it to share.
im not rooted, performed a factory reset, and my device still doesn't see any updates. Can somebody provide a link to the ROM?
Same situation here - no root, no mods, no available update

Same Thing Here Also

The OTA gets downloaded to /cache. If you are rooted you can see it. But the OTA is not a complete ROM, just a differential to the ROM you have.

still nothing

I've reset several time and cannot download the update. I get "Connecting to DM Server" and then update interrupted. Has anyone gotten around this?

Turns out there is a imei problem with the tablet that is preventing the download. My imei number is paired with a IPhone 4. Anyway will take a few day to fix then the upgrade should work.
I get the same. I wiped my device hoping for a different outcome, and still no update.
I found this in the thread below.
It is an old tread but I'll comment anyway. SM-T807 is the 3G version while SM-T805 is the LTE version. Both Hardware (CPU/GPU) and comms modules are different. So 805 LTE (which has Lollipop) firmware won't work for 807 (no Lollipop is currently available nor Samsung plans to release soon).

John.
After not being able to take the OTA after rooting, even after un rooting, not being able to find the OTA and sideload (not in /cache), and not able use Kies or Odin I finally took it to the Samsung kiosk at my bestbuy.
They reflashed 4.4.2, didn't wipe anything, and immediately downloaded and successfully installed the lollipop update after getting home and on WiFi.
Just don't mention that you rooted ;')
