Voice-mail and Calling - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I just got my moto x2 pure version which is awesome. I went to the Att store and they figured out how to give me LTE but I realized when I make a call or receive, it automatically switches to H which I think means 3G. But right after I hang up it goes back to LTE. Also I can't seem to set up voice-mail. I called my voice-mail but it says to just keep putting my 10 digit number which it doesn't recognize. Anyone have these same issues? How'd you resolve them

For your first question, that's just how it works - the radio downgrades to HSPA during voice calls.

The phone's software also needs to be able to take advantage of VOLTE. As far as I know, the pure moto X does not have that ability.

Will a Verizon X work on T-mobile?

I am ready for a new phone, but would like to be done with Verizon once they take away my unlimited plan. I read a few posts where it is said that the cdma phones would work on T-Mobile, the carrier I will be going to next. Can anyone confirm or deny the ability to use on both networks?
Thanks
Yes a Verizon Moto X will work on T-Mobile as it is SIM unlocked and supports band 4 LTE. It should be noted that it doesn't support AWS 3G which is the main band T-Mobile uses for their 3G service. If you are in a refarmed market then they will also offer 3G service on the PCS band which the Verizon Moto X does support. Most major cities are refarmed so as long as you are okay with the risk of ending up on 2G more often then you would on a T-Mobile Moto X then you should be okay. From my understanding T-Mobile is working on having almost all of their 3G service on the PCS band in order to free up AWS spectrum for LTE so this issue should become less of an issue over time.
With kit Kat on my vzw x, when I put my T-Mobile Sim in, I must manually enter T-Mobile APN settings to get working data and SMS. I haven't tried MMS.
With 4.2.2 Roms (version that the phone came with plus camera ota) APN settings came down automatically.
I get h+ in refarmed area.

It supports both. I've confirmed this with a T-Mobile SIM card and is also stated on the Verizon dev page.

Wow, that's interesting. Also interesting that the top section specifically references Band 4, yet the actual spectrum is not called out in the technical section below.
Thanks for the info. This is a surprisingly network-flexible phone... not used to that with Verizon phones.

Most of the upper level Verizon LTE phones released this year save the HTC One support band 4 either out of the box or will get a software update for it. Verizon is supposed to be making a big push over the next few months to add band 4 LTE service which is much needed here in Houston as our band 13 LTE service is so overloaded that sometimes I am lucky to top 3-4mbps.
Quite possible that Band 4 support was added in one of the updates that was pushed out, so most documentation wouldn't reference it. Best place to check would be the FCC docs when they tested the phone.

I put a T-mobile SIM in my stock 16GB Verizon Moto x. Here is what works and doesn't.
First off, 4G works! in the South Jersey area and it is Blistering fast, I have exceeded 40MB speed test downloads twice, Several in the high 30s and I am avg in mid 20s. Uploads are averaging 20+/- . Compared to Verizon this is like comparing Fios to 1999 era dial up. the best I ever got on Verizon 4G was 14 download but average between 4 and 9 !
The Network notification switches a lot between 4G, "H" mode, whatever that is, just bars and another which I didn't catch quick enough to read ?
Battery has been amazing compared to my galaxy Nexus, I got 7.5 hours of Actual "Screen on Time" which included some GPS use and an hour of music streaming total phone up time was 34+ hours. How long it will perform like this is anyone's guess, today i got about 6.5 of Screen on time. I hope this inst a trend
Now for the bad news - Using it as a Phone. Incoming calls are fine but, making outgoing is a Pain in the A$$.
When I dial a number, (which is a hassle on this KitKat dialer) it often goes to the home screen or back to the dialer. The Call Fails. I am not sure if my dialer is buggy or its a compatibility problem. the KitKat Dialer on the Moto X is an exorcise in futility. Google are you listening? Why reinvent the wheel. All I want in my Dialer is a Number Pad! and a phone book.
When I Open dialer I see Recent calls up top, the whole middle section says all contacts and is otherwise blank, the bottom has the number pad icon, History and settings dots.
Clicking the number pad icon enlarges the bottom section, which then goes all white and removes the three icons. I have to then click the back arrow and re-click the number pad icon to bring it up the actual dialer. .
At this time I can dial. and then the call always fails on the first attempt. Sometimes it takes several attempts to go through.
When I click send on the dialer the 4G disappears and I am left with just the bars. they come back when call is done but sometimes take a few minutes to do so.
If you Kill the dialer app or swipe it away, coming back to it you will have the same issues when trying to get the number pad (two attempts) if you dont, the number pad will open on first attempt. but the calls will still fail on the first try.
I also cant use the internet when in a call, whether WiFi is on or off. Is this a T-mobile problem? I could use the net in Verizon when in a call when on 4G or WiFi
The Data is set to global mode but I have tried both the other settings. On boot up I get a warning saying the SIM is not recognized which I just swipe away.
I am also having this problem. After making a call, the music player and the phones "volume" aspects cease to work., Meaning, I get no sound out of the phone, Music, notifications alarms etc.. This happens almost every time and the only fix is a reboot
I disabled all Verizon Bloat and a lot of Moto Bloat as well This could be causing some of the bugs? But i have tested several different configurations all with the same outcomes.
Hope this helps and puts an end to the - Will it work or not questions. There seem to be a lot of Net Know it all's that flat out say a Verizon Moto x wont work with a T-Mobile SIM or some other undocumented "fact"
Would a verizon sim work in a sprint or T-moblie phone?

So, I have a Verizon Moto X and popped in my T-Mobile sim card today and LTE popped up after a few seconds (I live in Boston). My LTE speeds on the internet worked instantly. However, I tried to send a text message and it wouldn't send. Not sure if I need to do anything else to get voice/text to work fine. Any ideas?

no because the sprint x is sim locked and doesn't use the same cdma setup, and the t-mobile doesn't support cdma/evdo that verizon uses for voice and 3g data

[Q] Moto X 2014 VZW no data during call

I had the original Moto X and just got the new Moto X 2014 on Tuesday. When i'm in the middle of a phone call i get a message saying data is unavailable. How will this technology work if one is driving (i.e. calling being routed through the VoIP LTE) and then geographically falls outside of an LTE zone?
I can see how this technology causes frustration. I work in Sales and am constantly holding calls via Bluetooth while driving.

My understanding is that your call will only be via VOLTE if you are doing voice+data. Under this circumstance, your voice call will be dropped when you are no longer within range of LTE.

Incorrect.
Straight out if verizons faq. If you enable volte (advanced calling 1.0) and place any call from a 4g area it will *always* drop if the phone moves to a 3g area.
A call placed in a 3g area will continue on 3g if you move into a LTE area (not drop).
The only way to avoid drop calls is not enable volte. in which case your new moto x will never have voice and data simultaneously.

They can stick volte, right up their a$$, its complete garbage, only works between 2 volte phones, drops calls. Yet the went ahead and gimped this device in some kind of thoughtless preparation for the half baked volte plan. Thanks Verizon for ruining data during calls. Idiots!

HD voice and instant video calls will only work between two volte devices. However all calls will be transmitted as data once you enable volte in your account and on your phone.
Another reason to never activate the steaming heap. Head to the country side, and data goes in and out swapping towers and landing in 1x at times. Yet in those areas regular voice services work fine. So it would be a huge downgrade for me and most people I know. Verizon is plain stupid for pulling the trigger on this. Thanks for the info, I know even better to steer clear now.
And they complained
during the switch from AMPS to CDMA, too.

Making phone calls switching to 1x

So I have had my Turbo for about ten days. Other than not having two way data has anyone notice issues on making phone calls and quality? I have max 4g lte bars as soon as I dial out it switches to 1x. Then I noticed people say they are losing me in conversations.
Now then same calls with my Droid maxx same location no issues.

I get the same thing too! I hate it but it's because you can't use data and call on this phone.
I get that too. AC podcast says that when Verizon rolls out voice over LTE it should fix everything
You will loose your data signal until VZW sends out the update to support VoLTE. That's why it's dropping to 1X. Mine just drops the symbol completely, so I just get a blank spot when I make a call. I've heard it'll be out by the end of the year. If it doesn't come out soon, I'll have to switch to the G2 until it does come out.
The maxx just got it'd update to ims&volte. Turbo should get it soon, probably with the lollipop update .
Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
There is a work-around. Install Google hangout. Install Google hangout dialer. Sign up for Google voice if you don't have an account. Install Google voice. Now you can use hangout to make and receive calls over data when you must also have internet for vpn or other reasons. It works surprising well.
Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
Except google voice would not be optimized like volte. Also it would count against your data and you will be using a GV number and not your cell.

strange indeed
Phone calls on Verizon still go over the 1x network (and they ALWAYS have.) I am guessing that the radio can't work in multiple modes at the same time (hardware limitation) but that is just speculation on my part. Pretty stupid really considering most LTE phones can do it already, but maybe it was just something with no priority as the Lollipop upgrade will most likely ad VoLTE anyway and make it a moot point.
Is anyone still having this problem? I can't make or receive calls the last few hours. It drops to 1G, just says dialing but won't ever connect when trying to call out. If I try to call myself from another phone it says I haven't set up my voicemail box yet (I've had this phone for over a month, and set it up back when I first got it). The phone worked fine a few hours ago. I'm not sure where to start fixing the problem. Any help would be great!

Does wifi calling work?
An update on this matter...
As far as I can tell Huawei has been fixing one of their shortcomings and allowing VoLTE support on many more carriers despite the phone being the wrong reason.
I've heard from a reliable source that, although I didn't think it was true, indeed VoLTE works on T-Mobile US.
Note that this may or may not depend on the version/branding of the P20 Pro.
Wifi calling does not and has never worked on T-Mobile US with Huawei phones unfortunately.

Can you try this please?
1. Turn WiFi off.
2. Make sure 4G symbol is showing on your cellular bars at the top of the screen.
3. Make a phone call. You can even call 611 for T-MO customer service, and make sure that 4G symbol still remains while on the call and that it does not change to 3G or anything else? And if you can post a screenshot, it would be much appreciated.
Are you using the CLT-L29 and what region? European or Latin American version?

Correct it's the dual sim CLT-L29 Build Number is clt l29 8.1.0.106(c636)
That method of testing would be a step backward. I have already confirmed I am calling over Band 12. VOLTE is working, atleast for me on T-Mobile. I wasn't expecting it to from reviews but it was a nice surprise.
Thanks

A workaround to get WiFi calling is to download T-Mobile Digits from play store and you can use the app to make wifi calls. You may need to sign up for T-MOBILE Digits. I'm not sure. I was a beta tester for Digits and they since let me keep the service for free on 3 devices.

I've been using google voice / hangouts dialer (or whatever they want to call it this month) for a few years now. I hardly ever use T-mobile for calls, works out well when you want an international phone. Less reliance on the network features.
Out of curiosity do you remember if T-Mobile digits worked for incoming calls as well?

Yes it does work. And the fact that you can mimic one number or multiple numbers as many times as you'd like on multiple devices is pretty cool.
