Hello everybody,
I'm not sure if this is the right section which i'm posting in, but as i couldn't find a more suitable place I'll ask my question here.
2 Weeks ago i acquired a Samsung GT-I9301I Phone, i'm completely new to Android as my Company phone is a BlackBerry. The Phone itself seems really good but the whole Software Bundle (Bloat-Ware) that come with Samsung Devices were pretty annoying. So i started some research on the Internet concerning Custom ROM's and found a Thread here with CyanogenMod 11 suitable for my Device. So i flashed it onto my Phone, and i'm quite impressed of the work @Rox has done.
Yesterday i had a conversation with a Friend of mine in Germany who works for Samsung Mobile, especially the Cellphone Repair Section. I told him what I've done. And he told me that sooner or later my Wi-Fi Module will stop working because the CyanogenMod will Damage/Destroy it. He told me that they receive lots of Devices with this problem and that it is definitely a problem caused by that Mod.
ACTUAL QUESTION:
Has anyone encountered such problems or heard of it before? Would be nice to collect information on this, if it's really caused by the CyanogenMod. And if, then maybe we together can relay the information we gather to the CyanogenMod Team for further discussion and problem solving...
Thx ahead, Steve
Whelp, I've used CM on my old HTC Sensation for years, never encountered any problem with the modules for sure :/
Is your buddy really serious? Because I haven't heard about a device damaged by that
Hi,
indeed he's serious he won't make jokes on that.
Before me posting here and opening this thread I've also done intensive search on the internet, but i couldn't find anything concerning the mentioned problem.
So the question now is: WTH did screwed those devices he's talking about. And if you're saying that you also never heard of something like that and you're using CM yourself for several years, then it brings me to only one answer.
Rookies with no experience are flashing their devices and that maybe because of missing knowledge/understanding something gone wrong during their attempt's to flash the Custom ROM's...?!?
Sent from my GT-I9301I using XDA Free mobile app
WiFi Modules need to be compiled with kernel.
If those aren't flashed after flashing a mod or custom kernel, WiFi won't work.
If a rookie won't flash kernel modules then it's his mistake.
Hi..
That's maybe really the reason. I'm using CM since 3 day's now and haven't encountered any Wi-Fi problems except a maybe weaker signal strength.
OK 3 day's isn't that long so I'll keep my eyes and ears open, and will follow this "Rumor". As anything happens I'll report it here.
Everyone a Merry Xmas!

I don't believe you'll encounter any problems, it's just important to flash the right files, is all
And no, signal is not weaker, AOSP has different parameters for measuring signal strength, and I believe it's more accurate than manufacturers ROMs (saw this info somewhere on the forum, don't remember where)
And merry Christmas you good XDA user
How can software physically damage hardware? The only way I can think of actually damaging the wifi module is if the phone is dropped, gotten wet, or run so much that heat fries.
I'm thinking the same concerning the Overstress / Overheating otherwise no idea. Working in IT business myself and that's the only reasonable explanation for Hardware damage.
The other question is if it's software related than it's only possible as mentioned before, that the module driver isn't correctly compiled / implemented into the kernel. And therefore the module just isn't working instead of destroyed.
As those devices aren't being repaired by my friend cause of void warranty, it's still an open question if the modules Hardware damaged or just aren't working...
Sent from my GT-I9301I using XDA Free mobile app
Well, unless your friend is completely a idiot (no offense...) software can't do harm to hardware...Overheating may cause real issue but in reality I have owned dozen of devices from old HD2 to new Z3, all run custom ROM but never encounter single hardware error, only some minor button damage....

After reading every single post in the general q&a and the development section. Im a little conflicted about buying a nook color to root. The s lot of people are having serious issues after rooting. For instance apps stop functioning or the device completely resets its self... im just wondering how widespread this problem is?

There are really no problems with it. I think most of what you are reading is people having problems due to not following instructions. I rooted and it works great, no issues.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Any resets happen when the unit is in sleep mode not while you are using it, so it just reboots and goes right back to sleep.. This very rarely happens to me, and nobody is sure exactly what the root cause is yet and not many care because it does not really disturb anything.
Other than that, the only problems out there are usually shared amongst other tablets, and not specific to this one.
You do realize that Android is meant and designed to be rooted. You are meant to have root access. Its the manufacturers that try to lock it down.
You have to remember this...people that are having issues are going to post on these forums to look for a resolution.
Those are NOT having issues (me) are not going to flood the forums with, "HEY ITS WORKING GREAT!".
I am sure the mod's appreciate the stance of people with no issues. I doubt the traffic of positive responses would tolerated.
So with that, if I was you, I would buy one (2 week return period), root and try it. If you don't like it, reset it back to factory and return it.
All the issues that people are having, solutions have mostly been found. I agree with the post above. Most are probably not having any problems. I have been rooted since December 24th. Any changes that I make is after "tweaks" have been tested by others. I am very careful to follow instructions. My rig is very stable. I appreciate those that are more adventurous than myself, that know no boundaries in regard to making the nook what it is. Some of the reported issues are due to that experimentation. But like I said, most all of those issues have been resolved. My suggestion would be to go for it. A few headaches may lie ahead but it should be worth it.
OK.guys I have a stock n1 running 2.3.6 but I am tired of the wifi issue my question is if I root does this fix the issue and also what are the benefits of rooting and which is the best method and rom
Thanks in advance
Can't answer for certainty because we don't know if your problem is software or hardware related.

my wifi keep on droping off when i google it i see its a problem with the n1
hope this helps
I haven't run stock since Froyo came out, but I haven't had any issues with my wifi, so if it is an issue with software, it doesn't seem like it exists in CyanogenMod. But as baseballfanz mentioned, it is too difficult to determine whether your issue is hardware or software. If it is software, it should be fixed. The two most popular custom ROMs are CyanogenMod and MIUI. I know CyanogenMod covers a lot of the additional features on their website, I am not sure about MIUI, but both probably include better perfomance and battery life, along with a ton of extra features.
Never had any WiFi issues myself or heard of anyone else having any with the N1. I suppose you could TRY another rom but I'm not sure if that would work. If you do I would recommend a cyanogenmod simply because theres so many people using that if anyone else has had this issue its probably been reported and solved if it was a software problem. Always worth a hot and if nothing else theres more to do with a rooted phone anyway.
Good luck, hope you'll let us know how you get on.

Check in the Nexus One Android Development forum, or look at the Nexus One wiki, which lists more roms as well. I just went to the Development forum myself and did a search for "sense", there's multiple Sense roms in that forum.
Good luck.

I have been trying to get a nice ROM and i have tried almost all of them... right now I'm testing unofficial AOKP and it seems like the one i will use but for some reason when opening the camera the phone restarts.
can't save logs because of that and all applications which try to access the cam end up crashing the phone, so no Skype, g+ and so on.
installing gallery.apk from cm 10.1 (which works fine) doesn't fix the issue...
does anybody have this problem?
i don't seem to find any threads about this.

This is a well known problem. International S3 camera crashes with aosp ROMs. It's to do with the camera firmware version but I've not found any of the solutions posted online have worked for me. Its a total nightmare.
the nightmare continues
Further to my post above...
Getting an S3 i9300 has been the worst phone-based decision I ever made. I love AOKP, but the camera issue exists on any rom I run on my S3 except for roms based on Samsung stock.
The reason, I have learned along my quest, is because the i9300 has variations in the camera hardware, and AOSP/AOKP roms appear to be tested with whichever one I haven't got. Great. There are guides to updating the camera firmware in isolation which I have tried without any improvement, but it does pass the time a little while I wait for the Nexus 5. I've come to the conclusion that if you want to enjoy a pure Google experience, that is the only answer.
Of course it isn't the fault of team AOKP that you and I can't enjoy their great ROM - and Samsung don't design their phones to be run anything other than their own stock firmware, so it's not as if you can blame them either. But it is sad that nobody appears to be listening to everybody that has this problem. The S3 was a top selling Android device last year and you'd think that at least one developer has this issue and wants to fix it, but apparently not. To my mind it seems as simple as including drivers for both camera firmwares, which is obviously what Samsung do with their stock roms.
I know this is basically just a rant but unfortunately I can't engage in any serious techie discussions because XDA consider me a noob. If you have this issue and permission to discuss it then please do try and take it forward with them.

Basically that is to stop users asking stupid questions like how do i switch the phone on .
But as its relatively easy to make ten or more non stupid posts on XDA its not a problem . Although if you where stupid on post 9 i fail to see how you gain intelligence by post 11.
General Q&A Accessories and Themes do not require ten posts even for boobs .
This is not the I9300 forum see above are you ranting about this phone I9305 or some other phone ??

You have mentioned only AOSP/AOKP ROMs, what about CM 10.2 nightlies. Camera works well on my i9305. But 'force 4xMSAA' under developer options must be unchecked (default.) .

maybe try AOKP ported by infrag?
I have just found bug with video and zooming though....
I have been using custom ROMs for few years now trying all these cool ROMs on XDA, and only this week I got an alert from my anti virus (Avast) on my Windows PC that some of these ROMs have an infected apk file with "Cosha.D"
I am not using any of these ROMs anyway, but just wanted to raise the issue and check if anyone got this alert too.
The ROMs that have the video player apk infected were Velocity Nightly Build 5, Holics and DarkRaider
I am NOT saying that this was done intentionally, but I just wanted to see if anyone else is aware of this.

I haven't installed these roms, so I've never run into these problems before (only used PAC, AKOP CM 10.1, 10.2, and 11, and WCX Sense rom). I recommend posting this information in the threads of the roms you found the infected apk in. Reading the link you provided makes me think this may be a base part of the rom given its ability to receive calls and texts and stuff.

Yes I know, I was planning to do that, but I needed to go through my anti virus logs to see what other ROMs were picked up as infected.
The other reason I started a new thread is to let everyone aware of the threat and see what other rules on XDA if any of the ROMs are infected.
Right now I'm not sure which ROMs to trust!
I've always known there are risks using Custom ROMs, but thought these ROMs would get thoroughly checked for security risks like these!!
I'm just as surprised as you are that these rooms were found infected! I too would have thought they would have been more thoroughly checked, but at least you discovered this before anything really bad happened. Hopefully you'll get a reply on the threads soon.

I've just swapped to a nexus 6. Not enjoying the pure Android experience and thinking about installing cyanogenmod.
Does this work with GoPro cameras? My previous OnePlus (which had cyanogenmod) did not...
No answers?
I mean... what are you trying to do with it?
Did your one plus work with baseball games?
The OnePlus could not connect to the GoPro wireless network.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
OK we are getting a little bit closer... Try actually explaining the situation. You are making it very hard on people. Especially since your first post didn't even establish what kind of go pro your talking about, or what functionality you were trying to use...
So are you trying to ask if the gopro app works on cyanogenmod?
If you google "does gopro app work with cyanogenmod, the very first result is from the one plus forum.
https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/gopro-app-incompatible-with-latest-version-of-cyanogenmod.319459/
However the issue they discuss is not an issue with connecting to the wireless network, its simply that the app is apparently not made available in the play store for the one plus one on firmware > CM12
Though it seems that you can simply download and install the APK yourself... Have you tried this?
If you wont give us details on what your experiencing it will be very hard to help you. Don't make us work so hard, because quite a few people simply wont, and they might have your answer. Please give more then a sentence, and actually describe your problem. What your trying to do, how your trying to do it, and what you have done or researched so far in trying to fix it... Your MUCH more likely to get actual help if you do that.
Probably worth checking on the CM forums, finding a user who both runs CM and uses a gopro may be difficult.
Or just try it... Since you definitely could have made a backup, flashed CM tested and reverted to stock by now.
