Samsung 64gb not being recognized - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just picked up a Note 4 on Friday morning and i had my sdcard in my tablet since i had a Nexus 5 prior. Im currently on the bus and once i get home i still will not have access to a computer. I inserted my card into the note 4 while turned on. Nothing popped up. I goto storage, it says to insert card greyed out. So i look up YouTube videos to make sure I'm inserting correctly. I turn off the device take out the battery and the card, then replace and turn it back on still nothing. I searched the Q&A, but nothing like my issue. Should i return it or is this an SDcard issue?

Need to format card with phone then transfer data back to card
BAD ASS NOTE 4

With different phone because I had it in a Samsung tablet and was working fine, I don't have the tablet on me at the moment. The Note 4 does not recognize it it's inserted but it's like it's not.

Are you rooted. If so did you flash the as fix. See if rom you running has the fix built in. If not search it and flash it. You still gonna have to format card to phone before card is junk and you need new one. Don't be swapping it around unless you have already bought a new card.
BAD ASS NOTE 4

Not rooted, so I should root then flash the file, or can I flash without being rooted? I'm not swapping any cards I just had my 64gb in the tablet since the nexus doesn't have a slot. I don't mind the formatting I just want it to work.

Thanks for replying but I know how to format I just don't have access to a pc for awhile. My original question is when I insert my sdcard into the Note 4 there is no notification or anything. Is that all N4's. Or is it just mine and if so I will need to get a replacement. It cannot detect my sdcard I goto storage in settings and there is no storage showing my inserted sdcard.

I currently have my sdcard inserted and this is what it still shows

To sum it up. You have bad format on your card. Don't have pc. Go buy a card and it will work

Thank you, better than a broken note I guess.

class 10 won't do anything. your phone can't read above 6 really
Thanks that's what i needed to know then.
I had that same problem, then I reformatted the card and everything was fine. You might want to try totally reformatting (data, ext, and swap partitions too if you use these). If you tried already, never mind, but you may save some money by reformatting... I did and it's going strong.
Yeah I tryed reformatting but the problem remains. Ordered the class 6 card.
I believe my current card is only a class 2. It came with an rd4 card for my kids ds so I'm guessing it is not very high quailty.

I was going to suggest getting a sandisk class 6 but nvm. haha mine is super fast.
Got the new card and I get the same error. Is this then a problem with my phone? Rebooting gets rid of the SD card damaged error. But it always comes back after mounting. Happens on various roms so I don't believe it is a rom error.
maybe time for tmobile to look at giving you a new phone?

Maybe, but you'd have to revert to stock and verify that the problem still exists.
All I have to do is run dreaming and let it update correct?
If it is broken I'll probably have to wait till I can buy a new phone this one is my primary internet. As of right now it's an annoyance more than anything.
It has gotten worse so I bought a nexus on Ebay. When I unmount now it does not see any files on the sd card.

Class 10 MicroSD Problem...

I've Samsung class 10 32 gb. It's really good, but my device started rebooting because of it. "System Process has stopped working."
What I found out is that after removing my micro sd my device is a hell FASTER than before!!!
Maybe a faulty micro sd, no since it works fine in my pc and other devices.
I want to check does any of you have the same problem???

HI,
I have exactly the same micro sd since 2 or 3 month and I haven't got any issues with it yet. I will send you an msg if something happens!
Cheers
I have a class 10 from A-Data, absolutely no issues.
As such I have to ask OP a few questions:
Have you tried formatting the card?
Have you tried doing factory reset on the phone in case it's some application you've installed misbehaving?
I have a 32GB class 10 from Lexar and it hasn't had any problems.

1Q: yes with no problems
2Q: yes and even formatted the usb storage from PC while connected to it. Just a RomToolbox users apps+ data restore. Maybe that's the problem?

Found the problem... I guess.
Moving applications to SD either by Link2SD, Apps2SD, or through GB stock applications move to SD methods lags the device while scanning for media at the device startup; which ends up rebooting the device constantly...
I removed the SD card and the device is blazing fast and no random reboots. Also, I uninstalled the apps that I've moved to SD while having the SD card in and no problem so far...
Any similar findings???

Sorry to dig up a month old post, but I just got my Note, and I have this exact card and experience the exact same issues, so you are not alone in this.
I'd be curious to hear if the OP has found any way around the issue? (without changing the card out, that is)
Thanks!

Running out of space

I am relatively new to Android and can't figure out how to install apps to my external sd card. My internal 11 GB is almost full so I want to move some larger games to the external card. Please help.
Look for apps2sd in Google play store..

Thanks, I tried that app just now and it doesn't do anything different than what the built in system tools does. It just keys me move apps on the phone to the sd card. My question is how can I move apps from my sd card (internal) to my external card to save space and have the same functionality a if the were installed in the phone. It would be cool if you could just install apps like you can on a 32 GB iPhone.

GMan901 & XDA Members:
If you're willing to shell out the cash for a Micro-SDXC card, I can show you how to swap your internal and external storage (SD cards). In my case, I started out with a 16GB GT-N7000 (International Note) and an 8GB Micro-SD card. I had apps installed on my internal SD card and would put all of my media (music, photos, videos) on my external storage (8GB Micro-SD card); but in the end, it wasn't enough. I ended up running out of space on my internal storage anyway; and considering that there's no way to replace the internal storage, I had to find another solution.
Now, on paper the Galaxy Note officially supports a maximum of 32GB of external storage. However, several sources have confirmed that the Galaxy Note (at least the GT-N7000 anyway) is capable of supporting Micro-SDXC cards of up to 64GB in size, and possibly even larger. However, no matter how large your external storage is, it's still your external storage. Now, if you were able to swap your internal and external storage, you'd have a fixed, 11.5GB external SD card that you would never be able to change, but you would also now have an internal SD card that you could increase or decrease in size whenever you like. In my case, I currently have a 32GB Samsung class 10 Micro-SD card that I bought on Amazon and configured to be my internal storage. Also, If I ever need more internal storage, all I have to do is purchase a larger card, copy all of the files from the old card to it, and insert it into my phone. It really is a great setup. If you're interested in trying this, just let me know and I'll post the necessary file(s) and instructions.
Also, it sounds to me like you are a former iPhone user. If you are, you should know that I am as well. As a matter of fact, it was the new iPhone 4S that I switched to Android from. At first, I found the transition to be..... less than smooth. However, with a little help from the good people here at XDA, I was able to not only make the transition, but also discover just how much more powerful Android is in comparison to iOS. In all fairness though, iOS is, for lack of a better term, the perfect "everyman" mobile OS. But if power, control, and versatility are your bag, Android is the way to go. So if you are in fact a recent iOS-to-Android convert, please let me know. I'd be happy to help show you the ropes.
Let me know if you'd like to swap your phone's internal and external storage; and also let me know if you've recently ditched iOS. In addition to the internal/external storage swap trick, there are a plethora of other tricks, hacks, mods, and techniques that can be used on Android to yield an almost infinite number of effects, changes, and improvements. Android is very tinker-friendly. So just let mw know how new you are to it, and I can show you all kinds of stuff.
Thank you,
Ed (Mister_Mxyzptlk)

Heck yeah, I would like to know! Yes, I was an iPhone user since 2007. A long as I don't need to root my phone out install a custom firmware, I would really like to know how to use my 32 micro sd card versus the ridiculous 11 GB the Note gives you to install apps and games. I barely had enough room to install Real racing 2.

Well, you will need to root your phone, but it's a completely reversible process. And if you do it correctly, you won't even trip the flash counter.
Anyway, we need to start with what build you're currently running. Could you check "Settings > About Phone" and let me know what build you're currently running. With any luck, it'll be a build that lets you use the ZergRush exploit. That way you won't have to downgrade your phone first.

Hi Mister_Mxyzptlk,
I have the same doubt/need... I would love to learn more from your experience.
I am rooted and my build # is GINGERBREAD.XXKL7.
I don't mean to hijack this thread!
thanks in advance!
do you also repartition in the process of switching?
Same Problem

Root your phone, put the sd card in a card reader for your pc, make a second partition on your sd card (Fat32 oder Ext4), get the app Link2SD and your good to go.

I used two apks I found on here. They literally swap memory. My SD shows as 64gig USB and acts like USB.

You can by connecting your device to a pc in mass storage mode and using a partitioning software. But it's kind of tricky. I tried several times to no avail so in the end I got myself a card reader. I recommend you to do the same, they are cheap nowadays. It's far more reliable than trying to do it with your phone.

Location of SD Card

Hi guys, can't find this anywhere and it's driving me mad.
I've just added a 64gb micro sd to my Note. I'm trying to set up Spotify so that it syncs offline tracks to my micro sd. What is the location of my micro sd? It comes up with mnt/sdcard but it still seems to be saving to my phone rather than the sd?
Thanks in advance.
on mine its something like mnt/sdcard/external_sd
Prettty much this.

On my stock, root is generally hidden from me, so I start with /sdcard/ using the file explorer the /sdcard/external_sd/ has a different icon to the other files, making it easily identifiable.
I would check to make sure that the 64gb SD Card is supported by the note, I know in the past 32GB has been the limit, but I'm a new note user and only dumped a 16GB one into mine that works fine.
You need to format a 64gb card IN the phone before using it.

Micro sdcard phantom wiped/erased

What a nightmare! I grabbed my Tab S 10.5 this morning and the stupid thing was showing there was nothing on my sdcard at all! All my apps that used it are now complaining and have no data at all. What a nightmare. The most annoying thing is that it's a Samsung branded micro sdcard to boot. Come on man!!! Some top of the line tablet this is!
Update:
Well, I pulled the micro sdcard out of the Tab S and put it in my PC and the data is still on it. So, the Tab S is apparently just not reading it. The only thing I can think of is backing it up on my PC and putting it back in the Tablet and reformatting it, then putting it back in the PC to restore the data. WASTE OF TIME for a so called Top of the Line Tab from Samsung!
Update 2:
Well, I put it back in the Tab S and it still wasn't reading it. So, I went to Settings/General/Storage and selected 'Unmount SD card'. Then I pulled it and put it back in the Tab S and it is now reading the thing. I imagine that's the trick if the micro sdcard is showing nothing on it all of a sudden. Strange behavior for a top of the line tablet...Anyway, problem averted...

Is it still working for you? I ask as I had the same issue with a Tab S 8.4 and a Samsung EVO 64GB card, and tried your solution several times, but it did no good whatsoever. After a week or so I gave up and put in an old Sandisk 16GB card and it has worked flawlessly. However, it is full and I could do with the space of the 64GB card.
I have the same issue with my Tab S 10.5. I have a 32 Gig Sandisk Ultra and it randomly does the same thing where it shows no data. The fix for me is to just reboot my tablet and it usually works for a few days but it is a repeating problem for me. I agree this is very frustrating to have a flagship device that has such issues with SD cards. FYI I have used that card in several other devices with no issues what so ever. I am holding out hope that a software update may fix the issue? Maybe Lollipop?
