Any Anti- Fog Options? - Samsung Gear VR

Just curious if anyone had any good anti-fog spray or film that would work for us? Fogging isn't too bad for me but when it does happen it gets a little annoying.

Funny, I was just having that issue and thought it was annoying I had to remove the headset every so often.

ya that fogging think make me go crazy, I used the cloth that come with it to clean it...but I think if we look at any lens solution for anti-fogging, esp for the glasses that might work? my sun-glasses get fog.....so there got to be a solution, if not...we can make millions just by trying to discover something new.

It seems to happen to me when it slightly slides down, I have adjusted it to sit very high on low I lid above the bag of eye, hasn't fogged since, I think air from nose would make its way in. Lol quit breathing so heavy. It is annoying when it fogs, it was only the left side for me

Everytime I use the VR... I have to literally sit in front of a fan for 2 reasons...
1. Fog
2. Heat (N4 gets hot and the VR tells me to stop for a while)

I went on amazon to see what they had, looked at some anti fog sprays. One of the reviews said people in hawaii were using baby shampoo mixed with water. You probably have to reapply a little more than using sprays but at least it's unlikely you'll get your eyes irritated if you do it wrong?
I'm wondering if samsung sells replacement lenses in case you scratch them or screw them up trying to anti fog it.

Quoting Gizmag ( What John Carmack Recommends)
Lens fogging is an issue on every VR headset, whether it's Oculus, Google Cardboard or the Gear VR. You can always remove the headset and give it a quick wipe with a microfiber cloth, but that only fixes the problem for a few seconds (and it doesn't exactly help with the virtual reality illusion).
The best lens fogging fix we've found came from Oculus CTO (and gaming legend) John Carmack: a product called Clarity Defog It wipes. Since we started using them, our Gear VR has been completely fog-free. Just wipe the eye-facing sides of both lenses before you put the headset on, and you'll have a clear window into your virtual world.
It's possible there are other products that will meet the same end, but we'd recommend steering clear of anti-fog sprays and wipes designed for car windshields: they use chemicals that were never meant to sit within a few millimeters of the human eye.

I personally would not use toothpaste. It's a abrasive and I don't believe you want to use a abrasive on optical grade plastic.
Toothpaste is used to promote oral hygiene: it serves as an abrasive that aids in removing the dental plaque and food from the teeth, assists in suppressing halitosis, and delivers active ingredients (most commonly fluoride) to help prevent tooth and gum disease (gingivitis).

That is respectfully some unintentionally bad advice. You will damage the lens surfaces.

I do disagree a bit with the earlier part of the quote. I've never had steam problems on the DK2 or Google Cardboard, just on the Gear VR.

The best result is to warm up the gear. I use a blow dryer or set it on my heater for a sec. Not getting it hot though. Just warm. The only reason it fogs up is because the gear is colder then the heat eminating from your face.

This is what I've been doing. If you got an Xbox one, I just place the headset on top of the console where the vents are and it warms it up nicely quick.

I use diver mask liquid spit from amazon. Works good. Just reapply every few weeks.

the fogging is due to temperature, cold lens + warm face = fogging.
try pressing your thumbs on the lenses for 30 sec prior to wearing it.

I received the Clarity Defog wipes last week. They work perfectly with one application lasting a few days. I use the resealable packs.

I had the same issue all the time until I starting positioning the VR a bit lower on my nose/face. I guess it is different for everyone but in the beginning I was so frustrated due to fog that I was contemplating returning the device.
After the minor adjustment, I'm a happy camper again.

Making your Nook Display 90% Fingerprint Free

Stealing this post from androidtablets.net from pbrauer, his exact instructions/quote:
"Making your Display Fingerprint-Free and Smudge-Proof for Nook.
This was originally from me for the ViewSonic G-Tab, but I have done this on both of my Nooks with the same excellent results. While I have not gotten the same kind of vendor endorsement as I got from the VS rep, I don't see why there would be an issue for Nooks, they also use an excellent quality glass screen.
So if you are like me, of the most annoying things about the tablets has nothing to do with its functionality, but has everything to do with its display, specifically the darn fingerprints and smudges! There is now a fix for this, tested by many people including myself, and works an absolute treat at curing at least 90% of the issue.
Not only does it prevent almost all fingerprints and smudges but it also gives your display a super silky sexy feel to it.
How to do it? Rain-X! Follow these directions to a super smooth, clean screen that will last at least a month between applications.
1. Clean your screen using a GOOD microfiber cloth and a little bit of water.
2. Repeat step one at least once! You really really want to have your screen as clean and "out-of-the-box" perfect as you possibly can get it. Check it at multiple angles and light to make sure you have no haze, no smudges, no spots.
3. Apply Rain-X to wet the corner of a clean cotton rag
4. Using a gentle swirling motion, apply the rain-x to the screen. It will bead up at first, but continue to swirl it on for about 20-30 seconds until it starts drying to a uniform hazy coating
5. Wet your microfiber cloth again, getting it damp but not dripping and buff off most of the hazy coat
6. When you have most of the haze removed, switch to the dry end of the microfiber and buff off the rest.
7. Go back to the bright lights and multiple viewing angles to check for missed areas.
Good luck and share your results!"
-- This sounds like a great idea to me.
hmmm may have to try this
That is genius!
I've been doing this for years on nearly all my phones and laptops haven't had a issue yet! Also great to use on your sat dish doesn't help in the big storms but it does help.
Me thinks this is a repost...

Aquapel seems to be better than Rain-X (lasts a bit longer under heavy wiper usage). I haven't switched back once I tried it.
Wonder if it would also work in this aspect as well (possibly better too).
I made the mistake one time of confusing Aircraft canopy cleaner/polish for windshield cleaner. However, after 30 minutes of buffing, buffing, and buffing, for six months even the BUGS would slide off that glass. Hmmm, I wonder...
How does this effect the glare?
*Rain-X only sold in America
So, you'll always have Rain-X on your fingertip, getting aborbed into your body and transferred to the food you handle, the contact lenses you put in your eyes, etc?
Also, Rain-X can be a pain to get off once it's on, so doing this may make it almost impossible to put a screen protector on later.
I used to use Rain-X on my windshield until I noticed dangerous visibility problems at night when a streetlight or something would hit at an off-angle. The glare was horrible and I couldn't see a thing.
just did this to my nook and my evo. loving it! the sun is the only light source I haven't tested yet but so far it's SO much better!
Might have to try this on my Nook and my Evo.
*Runs to store to buy Rain X*

Where do you buy this stuff? Do you have to mask the border off before applying?

You make a solid point on the chemicals being absorbed... The stuff was never meant to be in constant contact of skin.
I also had very bad visibility at night after using the washer fluid type...
Although I haven't tried this, something else that may work, and maybe safer than Rain-X as far as chemical absorption is shaving cream. This is an old trick I used to do to prevent the bathroom mirror from fogging up when I took a hot shower. I'd smear shaving cream (not gel; it needs to be real shaving cream) on the pre-cleaned mirror. Spread it all around. Let it sit for a while, then buff it off with a cloth.
Wow this worked surprisingly well. I previously tried Klasse AIO (it's a cleaner wax for the car) on it, which made it nice and slippery, but didn't seem to last very long. Rain-X worked amazingly well and also fixed the phantom touch issue that I've been having while playing zenonia 2. I can finally play without turning off and on my screen every so often to fix it. Thanks!
I tried this last night.
I cleaned the screen twice with a lint-free cloth designed for eyeglasses. I used liquid eyeglass cleaner too. I applied the RainX then buffed and buffed until it was clean...
I dunno. It doesn't really appear to make *that* much of a difference. My skin is average in terms of oil.
Maybe I was expecting better results.
Perhaps I'll try the shaving cream approach. Which is better, lime, menthol, or regular? /snark

Just tried this too. I still see some streaking afterwards (although it has been reduced significantly). The biggest difference though seems to be that I can wipe off any streaks with my fingers(!) afterwards.
FYI - You can buy Rain-X outside of the US. I picked mine up at Canadian Tire in Canada.
As for this stuff being absorbed through the skin - perhaps. Although according to the bottle it is only flammable and an eye irritant, so absorbing isn't likely to cause too much harm. And I would hope people are washing their hands before putting in/taking out contacts. There are more serious things that are easily spread by touching your eyes than Rain-X!

Yes! I use the same shaving cream trick on my bathroom mirror as well as my windshield. It keeps my windshield from fogging up and makes it slightly more resistant to fingerprints. So I'm thinking it would probably work well on the nook.

Moisture under camera lens

Hi, a couple of days ago I installed a screen protector on my gear. It was the wet kind where you have to use the spray. BIG MISTAKE! Even though I was cautious and barely got the screen wet after I was fine I noticed that the camera had condensation under the lens. This is supposed to be "water resistant". I let it dry out over night and the moisture was gone. Them last night I was installing a new entertainment system and was sweating while working. I again noticed condensation. This time o was irritated because this should be normal wear and tear.
I took it back to Verizon since it's been less than two weeks since I got it. They hemmed and hawed for about 30 minutes trying to look the problem up in their system. One ales person accused me of dropping it in water which I definitely did not do. I told them I want paying $300 for a watch that had this problem. Eventually they replaced it.
Anyone else have this problem? From now on Iif it even LOOKS like any moisture will get near this watch I'm taking it off.

From what I have read, others are having the same problem. Seems to be a design issue. So if you are working out or in some situation where you would be sweating you might want to take it off. I hear it will dry out of you leave it off for a while.
Sorry to read of your troubles.
Many of us have a bit of adhesive tape covering the small vent hole behind the camera. This is found on the inside of the watch strap.
I have another it of adhesive ready to cover the speaker vents. That tape is usually just stored on the metal clasp. In the event I get caught in the rain (jogging) then I would quickly cover over the speaker.

Good move on your part, and glad you were in your return period.. IMO, that might have been from the spray, I did that on a vid camera and sure enough, it put some liquid inside the lens.. It was replaced by the manufacturer. I learn from that, NO SPRAY, I wipe..

Galaxy Gear real life experience

hello everybody,
I just purchased a GG yesterday, after reading a lot of your posts and thank you all for it. What convinced me was the new update that brings full notifications and better battery life. So far, I like it a lot, but of course 1 day is not enough.
There are 2 things I would like to ask other owners, who might have had it for longer time.
I read the post about the IP55 rating, but I would like to know if somebody really dropped it in water (most likely unintentionally), drop some water/liquid on it, got heavy rain, ecc. In other words, something more than washing hands or sweat.
Second point regards scratches. There are a lot of posts about this all over Internet, but very controversial. I would like to know if any of you had any scracth on the glass, the case or the buckle. If any of you experinced any serious bump, drops and so forth. I read somewhere that the GG has sapphire glass, but I seriously doubt it, as usually these glasses are very expensive and are used mostly on more expensive watches.
Thining logically, Samsung should have considered these issues, as after all, it is a watch and you want to wear it, so some kind of protection shluld be there. But I learnt that logic does not always work.
Any advice/experience you would like to share will be much appreciated!!!
Thank you very much,
Roger
I am using GEAR since end of OCT.
- water resistance - rain, drops of water is OK for the watch - if You search the forum you will even find the movie with the gear under kitchen tap water flowing on it. It is NOT ok for shower, swimming, diving etc. Generally - keep it away from water when possible. GEAR build quality is OK
If You wonder how SONY watch behaves - check their forum - a lot of complains and quality issues in general like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2574988
- scratch resistance - Gear glass is NOT scratch resistant! it scratches very easy so keep it away from any hard objects, sand, metal, etc. Generally speaking- with the product life of maximum 1 year ( yes, we may expect GEAR II not later than September 2014) scratch resistance is not so important, and Samsung for sure will not use sapphire for the glass - it is too expensive.
I've had mine since day one and no problem with it whatsoever. I don't take it off when I wash my hands just careful not getting it wet.
Battery life is pretty strong as you go about two days. Don't have any scratches on it so far but I'm pretty careful when I'm around walls/tables/desks.

Same here ^^^
I have washed my hands with mine on and have gotten water on it (even into the speaker area) no problems so far. Regarding scratched, I put on a skinomi shield (invisible shield type). Looks awesome! Super clear and can barely see it's on. I got the full body which has a cover for under the watch (not too sure why you would need it but I put on since it came with it). I should let you know that with the full body cover, the charger takes some work to get it to close but it's definitely close-able. Have fun with you new gear. I know I am.
Picked up a galaxy gear with carbon fiber skin protector from skinomi and it came with a screen protector too. Bought extra screen protectors off Amazon just in case. Everything running great and not worries about scratches anymore. Still very cautious around water though.

Had mine for awhile as well. I don't worry about washing my hands or rain. Just wouldn't submerge it to be on the safer side. Scratches... The speaker clasp is pretty scratched up but I'm not too concerned about it. As for the face, I have hit/bumped/scraped on things such as desk, doors, walls, etc. So far it has held up well with no noticeable scratches. However I always worry every time I do bump it.

I know this is a slightly callous thing to say, but suddenly watches have fallen into the bi-yearly replaceable category.
No longer are they finely hand crafted devices that merely tell you just the time (and sometimes the date), they are an extension of your phone. Generally my analogue time pieces would last me anywhere between 5-15 years. This is technology though and we all know it can become out of date very quickly. It's sad and I dislike this fact, but I know that in a year or two I will want to upgrade to keep up with the Jones'. Not just that, I guarantee the Note 6 won't support the original Gear.
We're stuck in the cycle now!
My gear has me essentially committed to samsung now. I usually switch out phones alot but no more. No nexus 5 for me I guess. I wish I didn't have to use some weird workaround to get it to work with another phone

Were you able to get the Skinomi clasp cover to stay on? Mine was very difficult to get on to begin with and I could never get the corners to adhere properly. Within a couple days, the corners were full of dirt. Skinomi sent me a new one, but same problem. Is there a trick to get the corners to stay down, or is the clasp cover just useless?

Learn some basic electronics work and you'll be able to keep stuff running for much longer. That won't help with stuff that just get outdated to the point where they're no longer useful, but I don't see all that much application for more processing power in a watch. In a few years, just open it up and swap the battery with one purchased for a few dollars on a site like HobbyKing.

By the same logic, once the battery goes dead in your car, it's time to buy a new car because replacing the battery is "immoral and illegal". There's nothing wrong with trying to fix something you own.

It's working fine on my T-Mobile Note 4 running fireKat rom
Edit... Mostly fine. The usual unlock issue

Finally Pulled The Trigger!

So after months of waiting, when it was released on Monday I couldn't help but feel hesitant about picking one up, lol I'm not sure if it was justifying the money for a piece of plastic or the idea of it coming out was more exciting than actually buying it, for me the main seller is the cinema, I'm a huge movie buff and watch movies a lot before bed on my Note 10.1 2014 or Note 4 (If too lazy to grab my tablet) so this is right up my ally, i hope. The other sell is the Harmonix music player, I'm hoping its included because I haven't heard anyone talk about it since launch, I'm hoping they just forgot and it doesn't mean that it sucks or isn't included, being able to lay back on the couch and basically meditate and vibe out with immersive visuals to my favorite music sounds pretty awesome. Lets hope. Honestly those reasons and the fact I specifically opted for the Note 4 over the Note Edge in anticipation for the VR kind of pushed the sale, Otherwise getting the Note 4 would have been in vain lol.
Honestly I'm pretty excited to get it now that its ordered, needless to say I sprang for the Next Day shipping from Samsung because of my hesitation to grab one early in the week, and I wanted to get it to play with over the weekend, so It SHOULD be sitting on my doorstep ready to rock when I get home from work tomorrow.
Questions to the people who already have one in their hands:
Any tips or tricks I should know before getting this tomorrow?
Any cool features I need to know about?
Is the included content easy to run through within a day and does any of it have playback value? (I.E. The ocean, concerts, Iceland etc.)
Loading your own Movies from SD, simple?
Overheating?
Battery Life?
Worth the money?
Gaming?
Current Content & Does it seem like future content will be coming pretty regular?
Is there a content store or just what's on the Included SD card?
Etc.
Any and all thoughts appreciated, I've been reading the threads people have posted who have already picked one up and it's helped me find some validation in grabbing one.
Thanks Guys, Pretty jazzed up due to the wait and the reviews I've been reading and watching, but nervous I just dipped into the savings (especially during the already expensive Christmas time) to buy a tchotchke lol I mean I'm no stranger to Early adopting, especially with Samsung but you never know what you are in for!
Again thanks for any help!
To be honest, I don't want to ruin the surprise for you. But i would save the gaming for last...

So that the picture isn't blurry you have to put the Gear VR up and down on your face till you find your sweet spot by adjusting it with the headstrap.
And don't forget to remove all plastic covers from the lenses, they are on the front and back of the lenses.

Use the Cinema first, it's probably the most impressive and intuitive mode.
Games haven't impressed me much.
I concur that moving it up and down on your face is probably the most important thing for clarity, which Samsung doesn't elaborate much in its manuals.
This is very important if it's pretty cold where you live. If the Gear VR is cold, it will fog up for the first few minutes of use due to it being heated up by the phone and your face. You will notice this because a small fog will form on the lens. What I do is lift the Gear VR off my face about an inch and just blow up into the glass. It will then defog. I have to do this a couple times initially until things warm up. And I'd recommend you watch the Gear VR Intro Video first. And Cinema is real cool with 3d movies / videos. Good luck!

And don't forget to remove all plastic covers from the lenses, they are on the front and back of the lenses.

That's weird... I did not have any plastic things on the front of my lenses (only had them on the lenses inside of the goggles) S: I had something on the tinted cover thing though? Hope no one played with my VR before delivering X_X
Anyways~
My VR starts getting warm after about an hour of normal use without the cover thing on I leave my cover off because I like walking around with the see through function :silly:

Ok i got my Gear VR today and i had the exact same thing as you, only had a plastic film on the lenses inside of the googles and was also worried if it was already used. But the rest looks pretty much unused.

It's probably nothing then XD This thing is so fun with my big ass headphones :silly: I feel like a cyborg when I walk around with it
Apparently if you have Titanium Backup or whatever you can use your phone like normal-ish(?)
And don't forget to wipe your phone's screen so no smudges if any XD

Note 4 on a sauna

I know it's common sense not to use it under certain conditions but I'm curious since I see people using their phones in the sauna, I personally want to listen to music while I'm in the sauna but I think twice just wanted to know how many people here have used or use their Note 4 while in the sauna thanks all.
I wouldn't advise it; condensation will build up in areas you don't want contact with water. Can potentially void your warranty if liquid droplets form. The Note 4 isn't perfectly sealed through its back cover; there is a noticeable gap, and easy access for liquid droplets to get onto the circuit board. #Handlewithcare.
Even a waterproof bag will not help. Liquipel? I don't think so. I'd purchase a cheap MP3 player to be used in a Sauna.

Thanks makes perfect sense
A sauna is different than a steam room. A sauna is dry heat. You will not get any condensation unless in a steam room. However you may encounter drops of sweat that may come in conflict with your device. Usually a sauna is 150 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit. That being said you have a thermald in the kernel that will throttle your cpu for you. If you are only using it for music it should be ok if your gonna be doing benchmarks or gaming you might get reboots.
Good point, I was under the impression the OP wanted to use the device in both settings. The sweat entering the device is always a possibility and the perspiration contains salt which may corrode the internals of your device.

Yes indeed it's just hot but then again the actual spike in temperature can cause some strain in the cpu thanks for your feedback
There is this stuff you can buy at Home Depot. It's like a water proofer. I saw it on a YouTube video once. It can be used on anything from cell phones to sneakers. The guy in the video coated his iPhone in it. He took apart the phone and sprayed everything and it worked perfectly. He was able to submerge the phone directly underwater.

Even though it's dry heat?
i use mine, i just keep it wiped off and wrapped in my towel most of the time. I did the same with my note 3 and no issues so far. its in the sauna 4 to 5 days a week.

Interesting I'm still undecided lol I'm there 5 days a week for 10 to 15 minutes
NEVER take it into steam sauna, you asking for it.
Dry sauna however, you'll be good as long as it remains dry (away from sweat of your body) and not more than 10 minutes due to heat exposure

that's what i usually do lol, if i bring it in there it's for my 5 minute warm up session i spend prior to my workout
hey alright, sauna users! i usually sweat for around 10-15 minutes each day, i don't bring my phone but i see people doing it, and i figure it would be ok for 10 minutes or so. maybe keep it as low as possible? plus, don't these devices have heat warnings? but yeah, seems you've decided not to even bring it in, that's safe for sure.

This will not work on our note 4 because of the s pen and removable battery cover.

This is the safest option. Whenever I shower with my phone In the restroom I always wrap it in a shirt or towel.
Kind of unrelated but I had a brand new ZTE supreme after cracking the screen on my last one and carried it in my pocket to listen to music while doing some yard work in the summer last year. Ended up with sweat in the display that never went completely away. Eventually cracked that screen too. For some reason when that screen cracks it renders the touch interface useless. Once had an ipod touch that my sister broke that had glass shards literally falling off that still worked flawlessly.
Anyway...take care of your phones.
yeah, even in the dry sauna have i have seen the screen get cloudy. i mean its going to happen. just like when you put cold sunglasses on after the gym. they fog up. i just keep a towel with me, press the song i want, wrap it back up in the towel and enjoy. i also have a case on my phone for what its worth. granted, ive watched music videos while in the sauna too. i just dont keep it exposed to the heat for too long i take breaks to cool down outside.
