I know it's common sense not to use it under certain conditions but I'm curious since I see people using their phones in the sauna, I personally want to listen to music while I'm in the sauna but I think twice just wanted to know how many people here have used or use their Note 4 while in the sauna thanks all.
I wouldn't advise it; condensation will build up in areas you don't want contact with water. Can potentially void your warranty if liquid droplets form. The Note 4 isn't perfectly sealed through its back cover; there is a noticeable gap, and easy access for liquid droplets to get onto the circuit board. #Handlewithcare.
Even a waterproof bag will not help. Liquipel? I don't think so. I'd purchase a cheap MP3 player to be used in a Sauna.

A sauna is different than a steam room. A sauna is dry heat. You will not get any condensation unless in a steam room. However you may encounter drops of sweat that may come in conflict with your device. Usually a sauna is 150 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit. That being said you have a thermald in the kernel that will throttle your cpu for you. If you are only using it for music it should be ok if your gonna be doing benchmarks or gaming you might get reboots.
Good point, I was under the impression the OP wanted to use the device in both settings. The sweat entering the device is always a possibility and the perspiration contains salt which may corrode the internals of your device.

Yes indeed it's just hot but then again the actual spike in temperature can cause some strain in the cpu thanks for your feedback
There is this stuff you can buy at Home Depot. It's like a water proofer. I saw it on a YouTube video once. It can be used on anything from cell phones to sneakers. The guy in the video coated his iPhone in it. He took apart the phone and sprayed everything and it worked perfectly. He was able to submerge the phone directly underwater.

i use mine, i just keep it wiped off and wrapped in my towel most of the time. I did the same with my note 3 and no issues so far. its in the sauna 4 to 5 days a week.

Interesting I'm still undecided lol I'm there 5 days a week for 10 to 15 minutes
NEVER take it into steam sauna, you asking for it.
Dry sauna however, you'll be good as long as it remains dry (away from sweat of your body) and not more than 10 minutes due to heat exposure

hey alright, sauna users! i usually sweat for around 10-15 minutes each day, i don't bring my phone but i see people doing it, and i figure it would be ok for 10 minutes or so. maybe keep it as low as possible? plus, don't these devices have heat warnings? but yeah, seems you've decided not to even bring it in, that's safe for sure.

This is the safest option. Whenever I shower with my phone In the restroom I always wrap it in a shirt or towel.
Kind of unrelated but I had a brand new ZTE supreme after cracking the screen on my last one and carried it in my pocket to listen to music while doing some yard work in the summer last year. Ended up with sweat in the display that never went completely away. Eventually cracked that screen too. For some reason when that screen cracks it renders the touch interface useless. Once had an ipod touch that my sister broke that had glass shards literally falling off that still worked flawlessly.
Anyway...take care of your phones.
yeah, even in the dry sauna have i have seen the screen get cloudy. i mean its going to happen. just like when you put cold sunglasses on after the gym. they fog up. i just keep a towel with me, press the song i want, wrap it back up in the towel and enjoy. i also have a case on my phone for what its worth. granted, ive watched music videos while in the sauna too. i just dont keep it exposed to the heat for too long i take breaks to cool down outside.

So, I just got this s5 and decided to take the water resistancs to a new level.
I first ended up going to Cedar Point Amusement park, and went to the water park with it. Took a few video's with it on the slides, etc. Then went to the Wavepool , kept in my pock so it was no more then a few feet under water at any time.
Worked great, phone was still working. Just an FYI, if you do use it underwater, your signal strength will die, no cell signal underwater guys, I first thought the phone fried, but then relized, that was the issue, and then in a min, 4G was back! (I was freaked when I realized my pebble told me I was not connected.) Played with my Sphero for a bit.
a week later, I was at a festival doing some shooting, I was invited to the pool, with all the drugged up artists ,.. They all thought I was on every drug known to man because I brought my phone in the pool to take pictures (a few under water ones too!)
So far so good. I will admit that the phone at no time was fully submerged for more then 5 or 10 min at a time. but the phone still works great, and just needs a rince and dry to get the touch screen to work nomaly again.
so far, I'm not afraid!. I got the Samsung wireless back, I know it's got the seal, so that one is next! this week!

my theory, is if I am going to actualy do long swimming with it, I will put it my waterproof bag, but jumping into the pool for a quick jaunt, playing with my Sphero, or a waterslide where my phone is not UNDER water for more then a few min at a time, I will risk it.
I never keep phones long enough anyways.

Chlorine will destroy your waterproof capabilities.
Also your speaker will get saturated and sound like crap - eventually the phone will have a weak speaker resulting in popping/crackling sounds. Just FYI...You can take pictures and the phone can get wet but if your doing it everyday of summer, bad things could happen. I think the Active can do it better than the reg S 5, but I wont go swimming with it. Maybe take pictures once in a while in the pool.
? Makes No sense to me but hey i dont have a silver spoon in my mouth. Even if i could i woulnt cause its a waist of good hardware. Maybe everyone should be poor once in thier life and would appreciate things more.

I highly doubt the chlorine content in a public pool is high enough to cause the waterproof seals on the S5 to deteriorate.

It's probably not high enough to break the seal, yes, but your headphone jacks are being exposed to chlorine, as are your speakers. Filtered water at home wouldn't corrode the equipment as fast since... well that's chlorine's job, you're not drinking chlorinated water at home. But yeah, the speakers and headphone jack aren't directly part of the board if I'm correct, instead they are attatched to it (I suck at explaining things, bear with me please) by the looks of it, probably explaining why you can buy the headphone jack and speakers separately as replacement parts instead if the whole board. The reason why the slip is on the charging port is to protect the board, which is in more cases a lot more important than sound equipment. I hope I explained that generally well for no sleep in 36 hours.

and some people take the risk and deal with the consequences. I have taken the phone in the pool, and when I am done, I do clean it off, do I plan on doing it on a regular basis, NO, I only did it because I was thinking, I had 30 days to return this phone if it explodes, so I took the risk, in general, If I ever do plan on going to the pool in the future, I have a waterproof bag that I use.
Now the shower, man, is nice to change the song and see whats playing. but I don't submerge it.
Long story short, I was asking for outcomes, I was not asking if anyone was a spoiled brat, had more money then god, did't care if the phone exploded or whatever, those are just troll answers, I was looking for experiences of people willing to take risks, what their device's outcome was, not their financial outcome.
and about chlorine and the seals, that is a legit concern, just like salt in salt water pools. I did not think of that, and this is why i asked.
Water + electricity = busted ****. Common sense. And when the first battery does explode (not 100% on if the battery will do this) from taking into elements they have no business being in I'm sure someone will jump on some lawsuit even though it was there fault cause we all know water and electricity go so well together.

What? The phone is built to withstand a certain degree of water, hence the iP67 rating, I don't underatand why you are jumping to these astronomically implausible conclusions.
I don't know if you have seen the videos on YouTube but the S5 is highly resistant to water, even more so than the IP67 rating would lead you to believe.
Batteries can explode from various things, sitting too long can cause them to puff up, a direct impact/force can also cause it to explode.
Water+Electricity is bad but telling people their battery will explode if their S5 encounters water is simply doing a disservice to them. There are limits to the S5's water resistance as there are limits to many other things in life, we respect those limits and stay within the designated "safe" boundaries. There is no difference with the S5, respect the limits of the water resistance and continue enjoying the feature.

The battery exploding is more or less hypothetical as I said I wasn't a 100% and furthermore like I said water and electricity don't mix. One little flaw in you precious waterproof seals and poof your phones done. I myself have noticed just from charging my phone the USB flap is already loose so no I would not trust submerging my phone in water at any depth. and as for the waterproof rating i would think that applies to things like getting caught in the rain on your phone or dropping it in the toilet and ouickly removing it. Not jumping in a pool or going scuba diving and taking pictures underwater. Purposely Taking your phone into water or any other liquid is just STUPID it's water resistant not watertight or waterproof. Do with your phone what you will I just hate seeing hardware abused even if it is not mine. Sorry if this upsets anyone just my opinion.

The IP67 rating means Ingress Protection, the S5 in this case is 100% Dust proof as it has the highest value on the scale for dust resistance. The 2nd number in which the S5 has a 7 means water resistant at depths of up to 1m for up to 30 minutes, there is only one level above the S5's rating. This rating is given based on standardized testing so assuming you follow the specified limits and make sure your port covers are sealed, you should be fine taking your device with you in up to 1m of water.
Regarding the loosening of the port cover, that is a major point of concern. My port cover is still very tight fitting but I am have been extremely cautious in making sure it stays at 90° from the opening and doesn't bend in any other direction as to not weaken the flap.

I just got my phone 3 months ago, this is my first ever high end smartphone that my parents bought for me (costs $800 here in PH). Now, we went for a swimming, my phone is inside my pocket, then my cousin suddenly pushed me to the pool. My phone's flap (USB/micro sd part) was already not working because the rubber that holds it got removed. Then my phone died, I panicked for minutes, didn't know what to do, since I'm not in our home and I don't have any drier or anything. I tried to turn on the screen, it went back but it blacked out again. I removed the memory card and my sim card, I tried to blow it then let dry in the towel. After an hour, I put it in a bowl of rice to let it moist for two days as suggested by my Aunt. After like 2 hours, I checked my phone, it was warm (37-40 C maybe), it was still on, and it produce a sound for like every 5 mins. I turned it off by clicking the power button and the up volume together, it vibrated for three times, I put it again in the bowl.
Just right now I checked my phone, I turned it on. The Sony logo just appeared by a second then black, after that the android logo came up. When it got to the lockscreen for like 2 secs the screen suddenly shut down!
OMG what am I gonna do now? Is my phone already dead? This is so expensive my parents are gonna kill me . I need some help right now. I cant go to any service center of Sony right now because it's Holy Week here in the Philippines. Do you have any suggestions for me? (Sorry for my very long story and bad english)
Your phone is dead.
You fried it lol just power it off for minimum 24 hours in rice or silica gel and Do Not use a drier lol
Why would you power it on after only 2 hours?
Yes, do that for more than 24 hrs and pray. A lot.
Had this once with a S3, but it was never completely under water, just totally soaked from heavy rain while hiking. It worked until I smashed the screen two times in a short row.
As a sidenote: even if the Z3c is promoted as waterproof, I'd never take it close to any situation where it could get totally wet. Even if hiking and inside a case and my pockets I always put it in a ziplock bag if rain is to be expected...
I'm happily playing ingress on my phone in the pouring rain. No case, no ridiculous zip lock bag.

From what he said, they were closed, but defective. Which happens if you open them regularly to charge / connect to pc.
Defective flaps are also a motive to return. The phone is IP65/68. As such, it shouldn't be damaged in any way from continuous immersion before 3 meters.
Obviously if bootloader is still locked. (even so, I think a lawyer could force them to take the phone under warranty. The eula is quite vague about "modifying the phone")

Yeah it is waterproof and a defective flap is a reason to get it fixed under warranty. But if you have a defective flap and you drop it in the water then Sony does not have to fix the whole phone.
Well, this is how it works here in Brazil.
Who pushed you in the water with a cell phone in your pocket? Why can't this be their fault?
Phone is likely bricked.

You shouldn't have bought a waterproof phone then.
But my Z3C was only 8 days old. Water drops got inside USB Flaps, even though it was closed properly, no damage, no nothing. I think it was some thread though. Tested it second time, as was good.
I did buy it because of a lot of things, none of them being waterproof...
I care for my gadgets as I don't buy them on a plan/budget but at full price. It's easy to get it for 1 EUR/USD or whatever and then complain if it gets destroyed because of "supplier promised, supplier has to fix it at no cost" mentality. Anyway, each to his own.
Not to extend a useless discussion, but I also buy my phones at full price, no network discount. And one of the reason I bought this phone is its resistance to water. I haven't swam with it yet, I'll be scared before I do, but rain... Even my Motorola razr maxx could take rain drops. This phone can easily take rain.

I don't think it's useless, it shows how we care about our phones.
I agree, there is rain and rain. You call it a few drops, I call it getting soaked in heavy rain while outdoors for hours with no chance of cover. Eventually you will get soaked to the skin, including your gadgets.
If everybody here takes it to the shower, pool, sea or whatever - so be it. If it survives - good. If it doesn't: do not complain. Simple.

If it doesn't survive when all precautions are taken (Flaps properly closed and dipped solely in Fresh water), Sony is liable, if they deny warranty then it's time for a lawyer.
I'm only a kid, they took me for granted with my Z1 (Defective screen and Speaker) until I threatened them with Legal consequences.
Mazzeru said:
From what he said, they were closed, but defective. Which happens if you open them regularly to charge / connect to pc.
Defective flaps are also a motive to return. The phone is IP65/68. As such, it shouldn't be damaged in any way from continuous immersion before 3 meters.
Obviously if bootloader is still locked. (even so, I think a lawyer could force them to take the phone under warranty. The eula is quite vague about "modifying the phone")

It's rated for 1.5 meters, not 3.

To be honest with you im not gonna throw my $1000 phone on the floor to test for you xD
But this used to happen with my Note 5, whenever it was dropped the pen would fly out like a rocket.
i guess it is kinda normal because of the push release system, the shock from the fall will eject it.
it would also happen if you swung the phone downwards, the pen would shoot out, however i have not tried this with the note 8 either
p.s (your not supposed to drop your phone)

OMG! How often are you dropping your phone to notice this? Is the screen ok?
Truth is it's always going to based on where the impact on the phone occurred and at what height. My brother accidentally dropped his from the table onto hardwood floor. The Whitestone Dome Glass now has a hairline crack on it. But the S Pen stayed put in the device. I know a colleague who dropped her Note 5 phone and the S Pen actually shattered inside the Note. Half of it came out and the other half is wedged in there. So bottom line is be more careful and don't drop it!
Don't drop your phone?
lol Bit of a tall order that not dropping of the phone thing, I do understand the intent was probably something more along the lines of "be careful". I've dropped mine and the pen did not come out. I never had it come out on my previous Notes either although there were few tests as I was following the advice above and trying to be careful with them.
Flagship phones represent more than 2% of an average individual workers annual income. If you look at this from an angle of trying to gain perspective imagine instead you're talking about an 850 dollar laptop. Fairly average for laptop pricing and yet I treat my laptops more carefully than I do my phones which now have similar pricing. I think in my mind buying all those phones previously for much less than they now cost has the effect of making them seem to be something of lower cost in my mind although that reality is no longer correct. In other words my perception hasn't kept up with reality. Maybe it's just me but I do know I pay attention with my laptop, with my phone it's just there.
Don't drop the phone. Throw it down hard and the phone and pen will hit the floor at the same time. The pen won't have time to fall out.
Just be careful! DO NOT DROP YOUR PHONE!
The s pen poping out should be the least of your concerns
The 3 or 4 times that I've dropped my Note 5,7,8 the Spen has always popped out.

I droped the phone over the carpet, and s pen popped out too, using ruged spigen case. think rubber acts like an spring.
.
well if we look at the slot, there no real "lock" in the mechanism/design itself
when we pop the s-pen its actually not the s-pen poping but rather the "spring-top-parts" that poping out so we can pull the pen
when u pull the pen there just little resistant to it
afaik the s-pen is holded by small bump in the slot
thus dropping note8 can cause s-pen to pop itself, maybe yours have slot that more loose that causing easier to pop
but other than that i think normal

WHAAA??!! My brain is in there! Or I thought it was...
All kidding aside, it's an expensive investment for some. Dropping it on a continual basis means you risk eventually breaking it and if no insurance is in place, a very costly lesson in life. And the S Pen would be the least of my worries if I ever dropped it. I'd be more concerned that nothing inside got jarred or glass crack. Or worse, the pen snaps inside the Note itself. I want this thing to last at least 4 years minimum before I consider replacing it. That is my ROI expectations on the device after paying so much into it. Which also means making sure I keep it in good shape and not abuse it like a mad man. LOL
Unfortunately, in this day and age, people have become more 'wired'. I mean what's so important on the phone you still have to use it while doing your business in the john?
yes, its a major investment, and, I doubt it will last you 4 years..
that being said, considering what a major investment it is, why do people who have no idea what they are doing with it, want to root it, mod it, flash all sorts of stuff to it without knowing for certain how to fix it if they brick it?

OT: my Note 2 lasted me 4.5 years when I finally decided to upgrade to the Note 8... So yeah... I expect it to last me 4 years! Well at least I hope so! LOL
LOL, may be it is better to have the screen pops out instead of S-Pen when the phone is dropped. :-o

Yeah, it'll just make you usually sit on the john longer than you need to. Then you get ring around the ass. Then there's the risk of dropping your phone in the john!
With that said, I do it too. It's multitasking! If you do it right you're saving time. Getting shi* done while taking care of your shi*.
the one time i dropped my phone...the spen popped out as well...i don't think it's anything to worry about..

I mean, to be fair, it is a rather large investment for many users. It's not "just" a phone when taking everything into consideration. Dropping a device like this does cause a fair amount of stress for many depending on the result of that drop. It would be cool to be able to experience these drops without any stress but that's not the case for most of us. Sometimes a damaged phone (especially one as expensive as this one) can cause some real headaches, regardless of how careful we may be.
I do remember @OP, my Note 5 slipping out of my jacket pocket as I was getting out of my car at Best Buy once. S-Pen had popped out but I didn't notice it was gone until I had gotten home. I remember thinking that it may have landed under my car so I decided to go back to the parking space in the hopes that it may still be there. There was another car parked in the same spot so I looked under and sure enough the bastard was right there. It was a bit mauled up, though. Probably by other cars entering and leaving the parking spot. It wouldn't fit back into my Note 5 properly but it still worked on my display just fine.
I ended up ordering another S-Pen directly from Samsung because I couldn't trust the ones I saw on Amazon from third party sellers. Funny enough, I ended up getting the replacement S-Pen for free due to some shipping errors on Samsung's part. So this missing S-Pen had a happy ending after all. Anyway, hope you don't lose yours the next time you drop your phone.

Without knowing the user in question personally I'd suggest it's difficult to cast any doubt. I still run into folks with 3-5 year old phones that are in perfect working order. I can see how that can be more common across the user space just as easily as seeing enough who can't keep units in working conditions longer than a year.
Every time my wife drops her Note 5 out the window of the car while driving her Spen falls out too. This is annoying as the Spens are really hard to find in the gravel on the side of the road.
....not really joking about that
Just curious has anyone tried i-Opener on Note 8? Seen guide on iFixit seems kinda difficult with a repair score of 4/10. Other guides suggest hot plate. iOpener seems way easier. I don't trust a hot plate lol.
I've seen other guides use iOpener with ease. Just wanna see people on xda who have Note 8 opinion. Going to buy 1 myself for future repairs.

Yep, fast and easy. I heated up the bottom on the back first and stuck a plastic guitar pick in there (while pulling the glass away with a suction cup) to get it started. As soon as a made enough gap for the pick, i used a plastic pry tool in the ifixit pro tech kit gently sliding it around the remaining edges while aiming the blow dryer to help loosen the adhesive.
Took about 10 seconds once I got the initial gap on the bottom. That took quite a bit of pulling with the suction cup and i may or may not have dropped some foul language fearing i might break the glass from excessive force.

Ok cool thanks. From what I read elsewhere it's hit or miss. But has your Note 8 gotten wet after teardown and remained water resistant? I think if we're delicate like you and others on thread. We should be safe.
@Nick216ohio
That's a little pricey but there are key components that are useful regardless of the device model you are working on.
Get something similar from AliExpress for 1/3rd the price.
Having used both heat guns and hair dryers, I always opt for the hair dryer. In my experience, it's easier to regular the temperature so as not to damage the internals.
Also, in my experience working with iPhones, and Galaxies, I usually get a replacement back glass and adhesive in the event something goes wrong. They too can be had fairly inexpensively.

I have no clue who sammy uses but there are loads of the seals or glue "gasket" sets online Given what sammys looks like and I see on them And you made sure you lay it right. The seal can most def be made again water tight...Needs of slick hand work though....
Some people opt to get actual heat guns to remove the panels,But I am a little fearful of blowing up a batt in my face...:victory::victory::victory::victory:
This is silly.. It's supposed to be IP68. It got wet from low pressure tap water, I didn't mind because I know it's IP68. I was about to take a photo and noticed it's blurry, looked on the back and both the main and wide angle lenses are filled with water drops. So annoying.
The 5X lens is perfect for some reason, zero drops there.
I sent email to Giztop, I hope they can help.
Don't trust any phone to be watertight... many have learned the hard way.
Think of it more like being water resistant.
NEVER expose a phone to salt water. If -any- gets inside it's a sure death.

If it hasn't worked it's way to the mobo you should be fine after the clean out.
Just keep it powered down until then.
Truth be told the seals are rather puny on all phones. It's nice when they work, just don't count on it.
Realize that being under water 3 feet is 1.3 psi of pressure. It will find any openings... hence the max 30 minute warning on most "waterproof" phones.
Two ziplock freezers bags will make it waterproof for a couple inches to a few feet in depth. Even then I would keep an eye on it.

I had an LG V30 in the past.. It was in the water so many times , I figured IP68 can be trusted. I guess not all phones are made alike.
Anyway, I turned it off and it's sitting in rice (no idea if it actually works, but better than nothing).
My biggest worry is actually water marks on the camera glass after it dries. The main reason for buying this phone is the camera.
I already sent Giztop an email about it, let's see what they will reply.
Mine fell in a sink once but it was ok . Xiaomi waterproofing seems kinda hit and miss tbh
Forget the rice, eat it.
Heat drives out moisture even in a high humidity environments ie a hot box. Used in tropics to perverse lens, surgical equipment, etc.
Don't over cook it though
A constant 110F will work but it may take a spell.
The water will likely leave a residue but it may not be an issue. Try to gently tap it to the side so it will vaporize elsewhere.
I'm using a sous vide box , inserted a hair dryer in the whole of the sous vide and set the HD on low. Whenever it's turned on the moist goes away, as soon as I stop it comes back. Trying now 30 minutes or so, I'll update.
Giztop seems to avoid taking care of it, but I learned IP68 is not to be trusted. $1200 lesson.

It's not a expensive lesson yet... have it taken apart and dried.
That's probably the best option to avoid damaging it.
