Am I the only one? - Sprint HTC One (M7)

Who noticed how much more battery life we used to get on Sense 5.0 4.3?
Seriously, with KitKat, I can only get about 3.5/15 at best.
But I was looking through some older ROM and kernel threads, and people were getting insane numbers like 6/24.
I decided to revert to a 4.3 ROM, Sense 5.5, but no dice. According to GSam, "Android System" and "Kernel" were still using ~20% of my battery.
My mother's One, I noticed, doesn't have that drain, and uses a sense 5 ROM, so I went back even further.
Now, I can definitely see an increase in battery life, with Android System and Kernel using ~8% of battery. It goes even lower during standby.
I know the International guys don't have this problem, they still get insane numbers on KitKat.
So, does anyone else want to see if their battery life is better on JB?
Or is everyone here OK with about half the battery life they used to get?

I usually get through at least a day even under the worst Sprint network signal, so I'm good for my personal use case. Great signal from Sprint I get two days, poor signal I get one. As far as I know, the reason international gets better battery life is due to the GSM radio. CDMA phones use more battery than GSM - especially Sprint phones since they work harder to get poor signal.
But, I look forward to hearing your results.

OK, so I'm not done with my experiment yet, but so far, the results look good, which is a bad thing.
Sure, I wasn't able to get the insane 6/24, but I saw a DEFINITE increase in battery life from what I was experiencing before. Here are some screenshots from stock JB Sense 5 3.05.651.6, with Silence Kernel:
Here are the results:
Here is what I got when this was a new update (a really long time ago), bone stock:
Here is what inspired me to try this, credit goes to @THADDIUS25 (PM me if you want me to take this down)
I am currently running a Sense 6 ROM with Xceed NPR. I'll post my results from that soon.
After that, I'll be trying CM11. I wonder if there are any good kernels for it?

I don't mind at all bro you can leave it up. I still do get good battery life on kk but not like on jb.

mophie case
Sounds like you need a mophie case.
my mom is bad about turning off things she does not need on like WiFi & ends up killing her battery
so she got the mophie case for her HTC one M7, the case comes with a battery in it.
maybe that could help you.

My problem isn't that the battery life is bad (OK it kinda sorta is compared to the stuff today), but that it got worse for us when it stayed the same for the International guys. They're still pulling like 6 hours SOTs. Obviously Sprint users shouldn't expect to match international, but we should at least expect to not go down. I'm experimenting with different S6 ROMs and kernels now, hoping that I can at least match what I got on JB.
And I would rather have GS2 era battery life than get a mophie.

sounds to me HTC one is not the phone for you
I have had my Sprint HTC one M7 for some time now running stock & rooted/unlocked etc...
& the last update I got, it did seem like the battery was dyeing a little bit faster when the phone was doing nothing at all.

Um dude. What.
I just said I don't have a problem with this phone. I got this phone when it first came out and plan to use it until it blows up or I blow up, whichever comes first.
I'm just saying that battery life was better on JB, and that's unexpected.

I current don't have any battery screenshot during the preKK updates but it does feel like my SOT has dropped but not crazy amounts of time. At most I was able to hit 4 hrs and now its around 3:40 or so, but that just might be from fatigue or some other reason. With the new sensors in our devices, I'm not sure if all the old Roms are still functional on our phones so it might not be a option for us so we will have to wait and see what the L update brings to us in a few days.

was an interesting read....and i feel i've been through the same cycle! one very distinct feeling is why the device doesnt behave the way its defined on paper. with all the specs, the galaxy s should literally be flying, but somehow isnt the case.....its most probably the file system, or who knows could be lack of optimization from samsung's side on the drivers or adaptation.
Froyo update comes with a load of expectations and i must say im not as excited as i hoped to be with the leaked builds. they seem very mediocre in terms of what was expected. seems more like a features update build rather than a build aimed at really "stepping up the game" by bringing in some real optimizations and performance enhancements.
anyway, only time will tell and i hope samsung will do a good job in keeping this huge fanbase that they've created happy!
I have the same feeling with you my friend only a little bit worse.
I'm almost disappointed from my decision in buying this phone. My previous phones were HTC diamond and HTC HD2 which I still have and apart from the screen which is obviously better in galaxy s, android and the processor everything else is worse compared with HD2 and if you see here the first video for desire HD I believe you will also have the same feeling.
The software that comes with galaxy S is very poor and even useless (worse than OEM). I have the phone for a month now and I have deleted nearly everything that samsung has to offer and still haven't decided what widgets to put in my screen. Wouldn't have this problem with HTC sense.
Another thing that I'm very disappointed and I don't see anyone talking about it is the crappy camera which although the video is very good, when you try to take a picture (in good light conditions) and zoom a little bit on that picture you'll see that picture quality is very low and you could only compare it to a 2MP picture. (Its the worse camera I've ever seen, even diamond with 3,2MP camera took better pictures).
Also I can't believe that a multi national corporation like samsung cannot come up with a fix for the GPS and get rid of RFS. I'm using now JPH and I can tell you that lagfix is a must. (I think they don't care)
I new that samsung's phones (look Omnia and Omnia 2) were not to good softwarewise, but I bought this phone because I had no other choice as I could not compare it to desire at that time. Now I think it would be better if I bought desire.
This is definitely the only samsung phone I'll ever own and won't bother to look again in what samsung has to offer even if it had a quad core processor.
I hope I was not too boring and if someone has a different opinion I would love to hear it.
it took 6 weeks to get my phone back from repair >.<
In my case I started off needing a new phone badly, as in Now! immediately, as my last HTC phone was on its last legs, the fault was not hardware but Windows Mobile, I just couldn't stand the crap any more.
So, I decided I'll bodly go where no human under the reign of Microsoft has gone before, and found HTC Desire it was all cool and nice, until i started to see the huge list of defects and all the bugs it had, it felt like a mirage in a desert..
Meanwhile searching for bugs fixes and ways to patch up the HTC Desire i came up to this sweeeeeeet review comparison of Desire vs. Galaxy S (all links on my siggy), and i simply ran back to the store and demanded an exchange and i grabbed the Galaxy S. it was the i9000 UK model (3 button working), it was on its early incarnation of crappy ROMs, but the ROM "releases" leaked ROM we so often that it kept me fun and entertained for a few weeks, the GPS was not a total disaster, it at least was able to get a lock under 30sec accuracy was horrible though, with each passing firmware seemed it got better, then Bell Canada announced a NAM version of the SGS i couldn't be happier, quickly i setup a local Ad to sell the UK version, and picked up the Galaxy S Vibrant i9000m, joy joy joy
Because now i can get 3G every where, with the UK version i was only getting 3G on surface level or places close to windows.
Unfortunately a bad trade off, to my dismay i found this unit had the 3 buttons disabled, and that week was leaked the Froyo firmware, and i decided to flash it even with the 3 button disabled phone.... "i have a feeling" (BEP).... and yeap surely enough my guts were right, the damn flash pouched and it failed, and i got the horrible phone-!-pc screen looking at me.
nothing i could do, so i had to return the phone the 2nd day it was released they ran out of new units, as it was the 2nd day of the launch day in Canada, and i did not see it until 6 weeks later.
before i killed it with froyo i did get a chance to play around a bit with the GPS on JG9 and it was waaaay better than the UK version of the phone accuracy was pretty close, it was not jumping all over the place, that was a huge improvement from my point of view.
so after sending my brand new 1 day old SGS back to repair, i had to fall back to my arch nemesis HTC running Microsoft demons... 3 days later i got fed up again and set myself on a new quest and hit every single store carrying the Bell SGS, and testing every phone i was able to and finally after the 5th day i found a unit that had the 3 buttons enable.
bought it right away, ran home quickly upgraded it to JH2 and unlocked it... it was a major relieve.
and since then i've been reaping in the rewards and now i have over 410+ apps installed according to my AppBrain Sync account.
and i learned to keep the bootup process, first thing i did was to remove the media scan
then each time i installed a new app i'll open my Boot manager app and kill anything new added to the boot list
just doing that alone, it was enough to keep the phone running stock without the need of the much feared One Click Lag fix, which i've been reading it's causing more problem than what it solves specially for people running the Vibrant models.
GPS in JH2 was magnificent it gets quick locks in 5~10 sec vs. 10~30 sec on JG9 accuracy is about the same, depends on weather/area and also the sampling rate configure to use on the GPS app.
So in the irony of things this is the first phone that have ever lived up to my expectations.
i can really be in a conversation in middle of a street, some one would ask me something, and i can now easily pull out the answer from the SGS in seconds, browsing is so quick and fast, apps are fast, everything i need to look up runs as soon as i click it.
this is what mobile information is supposed to be, available immediately at your fingertips.
the camera is awesome, takes great picture in day and night, my old HTC phones picture quality were not as good.
and the best thing is i can truely work mobile now, i can have all my 10+ IM accounts online 7+ emails accounts active, lots of great apps for scheduling and alerts
and i can remote in to office/home/clients via RDP and VNC and FTP and SSH and whatever else they happens to be running and do my work from any where i happen to be standing by.
Oh! best of all, i can now be all the time on XDA on my favorite browser... still not used to the XDA App it's not as natural
Good job Samsung

I'm not affiliated in any way or manner with Samsung or Bell or anybody else, i was not one of the lucky one that got the free phone, i actually quite pissed they took 6 weeks to repair my first phone, and making my purchase a 2nd phone.
but that was Bell fault not Samsung, but Samsung is at fault too for listening to Bell and disabling the 3 button mode to prevent us from unlocking the phone and rooting the phone
which by the way we only did it in 3 weeks time, it serves you right Bell

Benefits of Omni rom

hi guys i was just wondering if anyone could explain the benefits of Omni Rom?
I have switched continuously between stock and Omni, however i seem to always return to stock mainly because of the screen of death issue and blue screen issues that Omni has.
However, it would be nice to know what benefits Omni has and why i have that urge to always want to try Omni again!
Don't

I used for about a week, and i needed to open my mobile many times to unplug then replug the battery again to make my mobile come back to life, you will see many sudden restarts, and you will see many blue screens.

I think it is simply because either you love flashing and testing new things out or you love the simplicity and AOSP feel. I know I love it. Its also the fact that you've on the latest android version with is super "light" when compared to others. Its very snappy and can multitask like a bull compared to even the 4.3, and no massive themeing or bloatware. And not to forget the multitude of features and customizations you get with the ROM. I personally love the Active Display and I don't know how I lived without it. Anyway if you have the urge, like me, to switch between ROM, CWM backups are the best because setting up a ROM from the beginning is a pain. Another such person is moly82! He too flashes every release!

Haha WHAT? That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard. Yes you do see blue screens, but mostly one per day. And even then the phone reboots in under a minute and is back to normal as if nothing happened. Please re-flash and re-evaluate.

Excuse me!!
Are you serious??
Is it OK for you to have reboots more than five times a day and this is only for the daily use??!! I did not even try demanding games.
And do you know anything about the need to remove your (non-removable) battery and re-plug it??
Please, if you think my opinion is ridiculous, then give that rom a try, and then give me your own opinion.
I wonder how can you consider your mobile reliable anymore if it will reboot even during playing the silliest and tiniest games ever there.
After all, this is my opinion which you may not agree with, but you are supposed to respect.

Yes. You are certainly entitled to your opinion. Respect there. But not to mislead others, you just gave a very uniquely bad experience. Everyone else loves this ROM. I have been on it since the first week of its release. There are loads of other Omni users who will agree with me.
As for the battery removal, i cannot remove mine. Its an XT. Reboots do not occur five times a day, mostly twice! At least not for me. I listen to music constantly with JetAudio which is a heavy app, use Whatsapp all the time, browse with Chrome at least twice a day and many other things. I do not play games though... so I can't say anything about that.
Thank you for the concern guys but you still haven't answered my question what are the benefits of omni against stock???

Advantages: incredibly fast in relation with stock, immersive mode (love it), personalisation, great support, less 3G consumption, latest android version, boot in 27s, and the battery, this is my best, a lot of free RAM(400MB with 35 apps installed by me).

I have had Omnirom since first tilals build and it was amazing. Since 4.4.2 it becomes more unstable and I sometimes have had more than one reboot. Using my phone as drivers log I really can't use random reboots. The sound is very low, a workaround makes it loud and whistle.
Now I am an stock and yes, it isn't the stable it should be, but there seems to be an update shortly. But stock rom is also very fast, fast enough I guess. A benefit stock rom has is usb otg, a feature I need, too and don't have with OmniRom or Cyanogen Rom.

Not true. I got 3 to 5 blue screens a day on omni. A few times a day my Xperia got stuck on a black screen. For both i had to do a hard reboot (power + volume).
The battery was very bad to for me. It was empty in 10 to 12 hours with 2 hours screen time. With 4.3 i get a day with the same screen on time. Also the camera on stock is a lot better
As long as Sony haven't released the source it's not gonna get much better.
Don't get me wrong. I normally prefer aosp above a stock rom. But this time 4.3 is a lot better.

Yes,the OTG and the HDMI don't work, but that are features that not all the people use, this is the best of ROMs, you can choose your best option depending of your needs.
Did you try the nighlties with the new branches?
I have tested stock and Omni feels faster,in my opinion.

Yes I have tested some homebuilds and after the new branches comes back to the nightlies I also have flashed these builds.
You are right, OmniRom feels faster than stock rom but I can't use the random reboots. I need the drivers log and every reboot is a showstopper I really don't need. A rom should be fast, yes, but it must be stable at all.
I have to say, there is nothing I really miss with stock rom, on the contrary.

Well I think there is no point in arguing about the blue screens because it must certainly depend on the amount usage and kind of usage. As for the battery life, I can get much better battery life.. about 2.5 hours screen time and can last overnight. It would be <14% though.

Should I finally upgrade to KK?

I have a droid maxx, but our phones are basically the same and this board is a bit more active.
So I have been holding out on updating to KitKat for a few reasons. Some of which are irrelevant now, but I wanted the opinions of the folk here on some of the outstanding concerns.
1. Battery Life - I have heard reports of way worsened battery life JB v. KK
2. Unable to downgrade - I have heard conflicting reports here. I am on a DE and Unlocked, so I should be able to downgrade back to JB if I want, correct?
3. Gravity Box Migration - I have heavy customization done in GB, and understand a diff module is required for KK... Is there an easy way to port all these mods over to the KK version or do I have to redo everything.
4. Tether - KK broke the entitlement hack, but I think i remember seeing a thread here with a new method, correct?
5. Camera - This phone has by far the worst camera I have ever used. I take photos at concerts and for the life of me cannot get a clear, crisp shot. How noticeably has KK improved the camera usability, specifically for anyone who takes pics at live shows/events?
I know some of this might be a bit repetitive, but I have seen some conflicting posts about some of this and wanted to try to get the answers all in one place

Here are my impressions:
1. Battery life: I bought my Moto X after KitKat was released and have had up and down battery life. However, on 4.4.4, my battery has improved greatly. With a Maxx, your battery should still be good on 4.4.4, but I can't say for 100% sure, since I don't have that device.
2. Even with an unlocked bootloader, you cannot downgrade. Motorola have added security checks and made it pretty much a guarantee that you will brick if you try to downgrade. No one knows why for sure, but these Moto phones are definitely not Nexus devices. tl;dr: Downgrade ≠ a good idea and bricking is likely, even with an unlocked bootloader.
3. I can't say for sure with gravity box migration. Sorry.
4. For the Moto X, there is an entitlement hack for 4.4, so it should be available for the Maxx. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong on that. I don't have unlimited data anymore, so I don't really deal with that.
5. Basically every update has improved the camera quality, and I think the consensus is that 4.4.4 has really improved the camera.
Hopefully that information helps you out a bit in your decision on whether to update or not.
thanks man, appreciate the impressions, i agree that if your battery has been fine, I should def be ok on the maxx
Maxx here. Unrooted. Vzw bloat is down, all is good. Except the boot sound even on mute/silent.
Ah, i figured out the Gravity Box part. Apparently the ability to backup and restore GB settings is a premium feature
Quick question for anyone on stock 4.4.4 is there anyway without root to change quick settings tiles?

You need to update to 4.4.4 as soon as possible as you are at least 2 updates behind the 4.4.4 update

And why exactly??
Why would someone who has a locked bootloader, and wants root access intentionally update to 4.4.4 knowing that there is no root method whatsoever??

I know some of this might be a bit repetitive, but I have seen some conflicting posts about some of this and wanted to try to get the answers all in one place

please help in my decision

I am about to pick up a nexus 6 and was seeing a lot of issues with the battery life. Does cm12 extend it or is it the same as stock? 2-4 hours aint that long. Im a huge fan of nexus but if it doesnt pass a decent amount of batt life im leaning towards a note 4 edge. Please guys some info. Thanks

I get a full day out of it. Averaging about 5-6 hours screen on time. I'm running a custom aosp ROM with custom kernel and my own settings. Runs amazing. My wife has the note 4 which is also an awesome phone. I'd say battery life is comparable. That really depends on who's using the phone though. But if you like to go custom with you're device then I would go with the nexus.
Depends how you use it honestly. I have seen 4-7 hours of on screen time. Depending. There are a lot of variables

I would wait until cm12.1 comes out. Alot of people are getting bricked devices since Android updated too 5.1....Benzo rom which is based off of cm12 is running great in 5.1

Probably bricked because new to flashing. Ibe flashed a bunch of phones, even flashed them to other.companies, stopped doing that though,so,not too worried about that. I just really really miss vanilla android, especially cyanogenmod
Cyanogen is out Alpha. CyanogenMod 12.1 ROM for Nexus 6! (Alpha): https://youtu.be/D4JE27mo600
I have flashed two or three roms on 5 .1. I don't think I've ever bricked a phone in five years. The Nexus 6 doesn't have a locked bootloader people are just not paying attention.
Benzo and Chroma currently offer more than CyanogenMod does.

Well, i was at sprint earlier doing a transfer and almost had my nexus 6,but, guess what? I gotta go in again later today, because, someone is using my identity in Maryland and has racked up a nice bill. Im in Hawaii so i just think thats crazy. Good thing Sprint and I have all the information for that dumb ass. So we will see if i get it today

Incorrect. "Bricked" due to CM deciding they wanted to try and modify the bootloader during flash of nightlies. Bootloader cannot be downgraded so cleaners found themselves in a qhsusb_bulk mode. Its not a brick though because it is now recoverable, though initially it wasn't.

My first day with the device where I was playing with all the settings, testing out the cam, and using the phone to make a few calls, text, listen to music at the gym, etc....i was at like 54% battery at the end of the day. So battery seems just fine. I charge every night so this should easily last you a day unless you are watching movies and talking on the phone for many hours.
i just got home with my N6 and am so stoked right now. time to root and rom it.

Good choice, I always had Samsung and htc devices in the past.
I'm not going back to them anytime soon
Battery life is good enough for me at about 5 to 6 hours of screen on time. If you need more juice, just pull out that turbo charger and charge it quickly.
I do miss my zerolemon 10000mah battery I had on my note 3 tho
The phone itself is very fast and the fact that temaseks cm12 rom is also available for this device made me jump the ship (always used his roms on my note 3)
Have fun
My first couple of days, battery wasn't that great. I think once all my apps installed and everything finished syncing and settling it, my battery has been great. I have averaged about 12-14 hours with 5+ hours SOT. that's on par with my note 3 so I'm happy with it and its snappy as hell. I could t tell a difference after decrypting, so not sure if there is a benefit to doing that anymore. Heard google patched the way encryption works on 5.1

Was going to download temasek but, i got a question for you. I had no luck flashing cm12 and lollipop dream roms. I am on 5.0 rooted unlocked and twrp 2.8.6.0 installed. My question is will temasek flash with my 5.0 baseband or do i need to update ota then redo everything else then flash temasek?
I used Temasek on the old baseband. I updated it to the 5.1 bootloader later on and it worked for me. Had no problems on the 5.0 bootloader tho.
Keep in mind that temaseks cm12 is encrypted so if you're unencrypted already you will lose all your stuff again since it will force encryption again

Which Oreo ROM to pick? (And why?)

With the recent influx of Oreo ROMs I was wondering just what people are using now and why?
I personally am still on AICP 12.1 Nougat, simply because I use my phone a lot and found it to be quite stable and very battery friendly.
But as a enthusiast I can't lose that itch that is telling me to finally upgrade my Mix to Oreo...
So, tell me about your experiences and why you made the choice you made.

I was on Oreo builds but ended up returning to AOSiP Nougat. Been on it for 2 weeks, feels comfortable and stable and etc. First tried AICP 12.1 but a visual glitch occurred due to using RTL layout. Not even a single issue on AOSiP that I'd call it a deal breaker. Cheers.

What made you go back? Did you perceive any deal-breaking issues?
The only thing that really irks me on AICP 12.1 Nougat is that it (randomly) black screens on me after 2-3 days of continuous use.
My hopes are that with my next move I can finally leave that bug behind.
I obviously don't want to invite additional bugs however...

Sorry, missed the why part. On Oreo roms, there are issues like Mobile network stand-by drainage which is always draining more amperes than the rest(while using the mobile data connection). And the proximity issues, one has got an almost working proximity sensor but at the same time breaks the in-call sound when you switch between speaker-earphone and the other one has no proximity sensor which sometimes become irritating. One of these is becoming a deal breaker after sometime.
Beside, there is no black screen issue on AOSiP for two weeks of usage, but I was and am using Floppy kernel RC 1.2(Google toolchain one) for the whole time. Take a look at the Up time in the screenshot, there is not even a reboot or freeze. You may want to give it a go.

After taking the time and checking all (I kid you not) Oreo ROMs out there I have finally settled down on Pixel Experience for now.
It's less feature packed than the other ROMs (given it's pure AOSP focus) but as such it's the only one I've found without "broken" features, glitched settings menus, etc.
So far everything seems to work, sans the proximity sensor, which is more or less the same completeness of functionality my previous Nougat ROM had.
I was forced to rely on Magisk and Xposed to get my beloved Pie Controls back up and running however (as all app-based implementations out there suck so far).
I'll take my time with this ROM now and report back after a week or so of active use. That should give me enough time to test everything out properly.

It's been a week now and I've been pleasantly surprised except for two things:
Battery life isn't quite up to par to what I had on AICP, which is a shame because I've gotten so damn used to the thing lasting me three days.
Now I need to recharge every second day.
Still better than most smartphones but I know we can get more out of this and I'm looking forward to new builds of the ROM addressing this.
The second thing is mostly a personal thing and some people will be totally unaffected by this.
Namely, the lack of built in Pie Controls...
I've come to enjoy the huge screen estate that is the Mi Mix and I just hate wasting space with a navbar.
This is where Pie Controls usually step in, but with Pixel Experience I'm forced to "add those in" via a combination of Magisk and systemless Xposed + Gravity Box.
This ends up double irking me as I prefer to run ROMs clean instead of hacking them up to add things which in my opinion should have been part of the basic bundle.
And... I guess as a optional third issue: Yes, the proximity sensor doesn't work on it but... I'm not really missing it.

Thanks. I have been wanting to switch to Oreo myself but wasn't sure which one was a stable option. I am on Nougat RR and it's running flawlessly. Your review definitely helps. I will wait a little more before making a switch.

I've found this ROM to be very pleasant to use, even now. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
If I had to add anything to my previous summary it is that at times the phone will heat up quite a lot.
I haven't found out what triggers it yet and it's seemingly random and as such I can't guarantee that the blame actually lies with the ROM or an app of mine.

Maybe the current governor profile for your kernel is ineffective. See if you can put a custom kernel and then play around with the governor or CPU settings (if you are unsure on this, do not risk it)
I had a similar issue when I first started using RR. Someone pointed me to use the AKT Profiles apk and select one of the governors. My phone went from being toasty all times to a cool cucumber. Further updates to RR fixed the issue.
Hope this helps.
I’ve been running RR Oreo for months with no major issues. The general responsiveness seems faster than Nougat, though it's difficult to judge, and although the battery life appears to drop faster, I get the feeling that this is more to do with a change in the way the remaining battery life is measured rather than a higher drain rate i.e. nougat used to stay high longer then drop quickly when approaching empty, oreo seems to drop more evenly maybe even slowing down towards empty.
I'm looking forward to trying LOS when it comes of age, but for now, RR gets two thumbs up.
Slàinte
mmidders
I've come to the same conclusion about battery life in the new Oreo based ROMs.
