Lots of ROMs are being developed for our device (go devs, keep them coming), some stock, others with (new) features.
Is there a place where we can compare these ROMs based on their features?
Scanning all the threads, doesn't really give a clear view.
I know the best way to know what a ROM is all about is to actually try it, but a comparison chart would provide a nice shortlist to start from.
Read the op of each rom thread? Usually tells you the features.

I guess if someone had time they could do this for the more popular ROMs

Some do this better than others. Many make you go to their website & click around till you find something. Others list a bunch of stuff that many of us have no idea what most of them do. So a thread / wiki that gives the character & main features in a simplified way would be very helpful and welcome.
As great as the idea seems. Making a wiki or a video for a rom gets outdated quick. Roms and kernels are always changing day by day, new features are being added and removed.
The best advice I can give you is that, download the roms that interest you. If they interest you, flash them and give them a try for 10-15 minutes without installing all of your apps. If you happen to not like the rom, simply do a nandroid restore to a previous backup.
The roms in original development tend to make their own code and development tends to kang code (use code from others).

Time sure is a factor. And agreed, ROMs and their features could change fairly quick.
Trail and error (so to speak) would still be the best way. As a new Nexus user I'm not familiar with the "popular" ROMs and their devs, so it's pretty overwhelming with all those ROMs to choose from.
If only there was a uniform way to setup the OP for each ROM on XDA.
Thanks for chiming in guys!

One of the ways you can see if a ROM is popular is by the number of posts and views in that thread as well as how active it is. Some of the roms have YouTube videos for the kit kat version or even lollipop so that can give you a jist of the rom.

Yeah, I usually skimmed the threads on number of views.
It now brought me to Pure Shamu. Seems to be one of the most popular ones at the moment.
I'm gonna follow that thread and in a week or so I'll give it a whirl. It has some mods I'm looking for, like clock and battery icon mods.

I personally use euphoria which is formerly known as Mahdi rom. Pretty popular rom and gets updated weekly or so.

I have a suggestion to the DEVs: Instead of making a dillion different but similar ROMS, why not cooperate in building one kickass ROM instead?
There already are two or three kickass ROMs that surround all others and you can easily find examples of developpers working on several ROMS or sharing technical information or pieces of code.

Sure. But how do I find them? My phone is a work tool and I cannot spend "all day" testing ROMs. If we had one ROM developed or "puzzled" by the developers we would know what ROM to choose.
Backing up apps, nandroid and reconfiguring the device each time takes a LONG time.
You'll find them on the first page of this subforum or look in the ROMS list stickied above.
And anyways, the devs cannot all cooperate with each other as they have their own things to do.

No, it's not too many. It's just to hard to find the best one. Compared to buying a new car: 6-7 almost exactly like cars. Only the color and shape of the headlights differ. Which one to choose? Instead of getting the manufactureres agreeing on the color and shape of the headlights and make one great engine instead.
I love car analogies.
This is not meant as criticism of anyone. Just a wish of getting the "boss ROM" instead of masses of variations of the same ROM.

Well if you want a boss ROM why not stick with the stock ROM with root.
I personally use the latest Wildpuzzle (0.3), it keeps the sense UI which differs from other quality ROMs such as Cyanogen. Wildpuzzle also has the mods and addons I will benefit from such as various UI tweaks and easily flashable extras such as OC kernel (jacobs?)

well the idea of open source projects is that everyone has access to how things are made etc, resulting in other developers sharing ideas, making better codes.
I hope this is in the right section. But with many roms and so many versions, there isnt a pros and cons rom sheet out there. It would be nice to know what rom is better at this and what rom gives you that. It also would be nice if people could start uploading short video tours of each rom. That way everyone can get a brief look at the appearence and menus each different rom has, to help us decide which we like.

That can be a huge undertaking for most devs, not only managing the development of the ROM's, but fielding questions and such. While it's a cool idea, it's not too practical. The ROM's at XDA can change SO quickly, it would be impossible to keep up with attempting to video it. Some of the ROM threads you'll see, don't even have screen shots.
I think the main reason is, most of the ROM's are going to be BASICALLY the same, in terms of operation. Past that; it's going to be functionality, how the dev cooks the ROM, and what he/she puts in it. In the end, it's all visual. Themes, apps, wallpapers, and so on. I could send you videos of the past 10 ROM's I've flashed, and I can tell you, you would be very hard pressed to tell me which ROM is which, just because of how I mod it to suit my needs.
My suggestion is to read the threads, find a dev that is present in the forum, find a thread that is supportive and will allow you to find the answers you need. Then try it. From my experience, each Captivate is a little bit different, and yours my respond a little differently than mine will. You just need to put some time and work into figuring out which one will work for you.
That's not to say that there aren't some ROMs that are wildly different than others. I've certainly flashed a couple ROMs that blew me away with what they had, but that is indeed rare.

Adam has a REALLY good thing going with Phoenix. His functionality of the GPS is hands down the best I've seen. The theming is great, but for me, he's good people, the team has alot of pride in the project and it shows in the thread.
Yes and actually the only 2 roms I've ever used that had good GPS were Phoenix and Assonance/Serendity. I can't tell you which is better, I just know that both have working GPS
the best way to know is to try them

Cezar's Continuum is the best I have seen.
You gotta try each rom out and see which one suits best for you. I'm sure you can try out roms for 30 minutes to an hour when devs have worked on for hours and hours releasing their roms. At least that's how I like to think.
It comes down to how you customize it. all the rims are great, but eventually it boils down to the kernel, modem, scripts, tweaks, and other things you add in yourself. My gps is accurate to FEET in sacramento, and locks in five seconds or less thanks to da_g and his fix. The telus modem helps a ton too. So in the end we all arrive at different roms. Doing video tours would be terrible cause not all roms are the same in the end

I am currently on RocketRom JB v3 but since this will be the final version of RocketRom, I am looking for the next best ROM. So far I know all of the buzz is between Ultimate and AllianceRom.
So I just want a feel of what the community think and I will go with the one everyone think is best.

ultimate is the best TW rom so far ..nothing coms close to it ..ive tried most of the TW jb roms out there but i keep coming back to ultimate,no offense to the devs but my personal choice is ultimate
Ive tried em both, And both are extremely well crafted and run perfectly.
I wouldnt say one is better / worse than the other, they are equally as great in their own way.
The only advice I (as well as many others) can give is: Try them both ! test them for several days and see which performs better FOR YOU.
So these are the two roms that are currently popular huh? Thanks for helping to reduce my reading time. I'm surprised Ultimate is a bit popular than Alliance. But this is good to know.

Thanks for your input, I actually tried Alliance first but for some reason I couldn't get it to work, constant boot loop, spent hours trying different ways to get it work but no cigar. I am currently trying out Ultimate, I am rather happy with it. I will follow your advice and try alliance rom again but probably after a few weeks of using Ultimate.
Thanks to everyone who contributed into this, by the looks of it, both Ultimate and Alliance comes really close and it is almost split in the middle of what the community thinks.
don't compare any rom on this forum, every rom has a plus and minus, you want to know what is the best one? try it yourself, and what rom seems match for you, because if you ask people here of course they have a much reason for himself why he choose "that" rom.
Thanks.

And that is what I am after, what majority of the people think is the rom "they" like best. Maybe I shouldn't of worded it as Ultimate Vs Alliance but what I want to know is statistically which rom is most popular. If people actually read the thread they should know this is what I was after at the very beginning.
Look in the development sections and see which thread have the most replies / views, they are mainly the most popular
Some have issues with Alliance, I had some myself, frequent bootloops, sticking on GT-N7000 screen and so on, but with a bit of tinkering I fixed it.
Now im using Ultimate, and it satisfies my every need, So im sticking with it Its Fast, Stable, Smooth, Rarely gets laggy and is frequently updated which is a main USP for me, I like the fact that the Dev listens to the users and is always improving on it.
But as the rest say, just try them all.. There are some wicked AOSP ROMs out there too so dont focus all your attention on TW JB Leaks, Unless thats what you prefer ?
Hey all, I've been out of the Touchpad loop for about a year now. Currently running a CM rom (7 maybe?) that's on 4.0.1. I'd like to upgrade to a new rom. I don't have a lot of spare time to play around flashing different roms, so I would like to ask if anyone can give me some advice; and going through 20 some rom threads to read reviews is taking forever.
I would like to get the newest rom possible with the most things working. Number one priority for me is battery life, which from what I've been reading, that pretty much rules out 4.4 roms. So I assume I should look for a 4.2 rom? The other things that I would like is bluetooth for my keyboard, and hw video. Camera and mic would be a plus, but not 100% necessary. I'm sure you all are tired of these threads, but if anyone would like to help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.
Which ROM questions are generally discouraged on XDA forums. Avoids "mine is bigger" arguments and honestly what works best for one person and on one devices isn't the same as others. There are a number of great ROMs out for what is an abandoned product thanks to great developers. Best bet is to look at the Android developer subforum and read each ROM thread to learn about each ROM, any issues that existed or still exist, and different features. Also check on YouTube for videos of ROMs to see them in action. Also check Google+ since discussions also happen there.
Last, make sure to follow the developers directions completely. And try a few ROMs out... That way you can determine what really works best for you on your device. And... It's fun. Good luck!

Why not build your own that could be very much different.....with the performance and the theming to fit your own taste. It really is as simple as that.

I agree. The roms available all seem too alike. Most have bugs. And if not they seem to lack features id put in standard.. i am not a rom dev.. but have been working on my own. It will be a compilation of miui aosp and aome cherry picks. But again.. its gonna be the same base.. what can i do to make mine different? We're all stuck using either samsungs crap base or cm... I'm getting discouraged. :'(
Why Android is so awesome
The beauty of Android is the ability to make it any way you like. It has already been said, but I would like to reinforce this idea. ROMs are all very similar because the MAJORITY of people have the same basic requirements from their phones. This means that the feature set that most people demand is very similar, and therefore the features offered in the various ROMs will be similar as well.
The people who make ROMs that are overly different from the 'normal' do it primarily for their own benefit, and their specific needs are not often shared by others. So these "unique" ROMs never really get out because there isn't a demand for them.
I personally have done many of my own "purpose-built" ROMs that go outside the normal, but posting them wouldn't make much sense, because the things that are different are not needed by other people. Also, supporting a COMMUNITY of people who use your ROM is much harder than supporting yourself. I can make ROM changes for myself, but I absolutely do not have time to try to upkeep a ROM thread. The work that those guys put in is INCREDIBLE. Making a ROM work for one person on one phone in one configuration is trivial compared to trying to roll out a mass-compatible distribution. The only ROMs that are worth that kind of time are the ROMs that suit the needs of many, not the needs of few. Therefore, the ROMs that are distributed online are all seeking to fill the same basic roles.
As to how you can make your ROM unique, that is like asking how to make a car unique. First you have to decide what you want. Do you want a race car (speed)? Do you want amazing gas mileage (battery life)? Does it need to be street legal (compatibility)? Do you care about color (theme)? Do you need a great sound system (music player)?
I think you begin to see what I mean. You can make a ROM unique in many ways, but you have to figure out what you want from the ROM before you can figure out what the ROM needs to be like.
You also mentioned that many ROMs are buggy. Get used to it. Especially if you are going to start building your own. I don't mean to sound harsh, but that is the nature of the game. If you want maximum stability, go back to stock. Everything has a trade-off. If you want great features, you will have to work through the glitches. I am not saying that a "perfect" ROM is impossible, but be prepared to put in the time. The ROM devs around here do everything they can, but ultimately they also have full-time jobs doing other things. If each of the custom ROMs on this forum had the 500 man full-time dev team that Samsung has, the ROMs would be just as stable. Unfortunately, that isn't the case.
Welcome to the world of Android, my friend. Have fun building!
I feel like that was completely unnecessary and very untrue. Ive ran several 'stable' AOSP/CM roms and the one im building is quite stable thank you.
A base is just a base. The features i add are always in demand. And some may or may not be activated upon flashing. Thats up to the user to
decide. imo this whole conversation seems to lure in bashers. All i did was ask for some simple advice. Ill take my leave now.

I just want to say that I meant no disrespect! And I am very happy you have a stable ROM. All I was suggesting is that I would guess you have had some bumps in the road along the way. I am confident that you have worked through them, or are in the process of doing so, but I would wager to bet that in the future you will run into more bumps. You will fix them and all will be good.
I am simply trying to point out that in the process of adding new features, often we encounter issues, bugs, glitches, etc. If you haven't, then I think you are extremely lucky and in a league of your own as far as programming goes. Far above me and many others.
And if the features you add are always in demand, then I propose that you are adding features that are similar to what many others are adding. I could be wrong, but I feel that to meet the demands of the masses it is easy to fall into a trail that closely parallels others. There are certain unique differences, but in the end I think that this is why ROMs are similar today.
Anyway, please know that I meant you no disrespect or flame. I was just trying to explain my perspective on why there was not as much variation as we would all like, and why occasionally someone discovers a bug.
Very well written. And well said. Yes theres always a problem when adding/removing features.. but the point is to release when its stable/feature rich. Anyways. I thank you for the input. And soon DUI (DaisUI) will hit xda servers.
cuz aosp is aosp no matter how u look at it. differences are kernels.. updated toolchains.. and customizations... like nameless roms otg mode.. pretty neat.. or sokps dolby audio... its easy to cherry pick stuff u like about roms n drop them into cm... rom devs really just making stuff THEY like n sharing with us

dead forum is dead forum.. can't really complain considering how dead development for the device really is.. i think there are too many phones these days being released which does has an impact on how much modding happens. i remember the days of the ppc-6700/touchpro/2/etc and how those devices even after years there was tons of active stuff going on (and those were WM devices lol). now the peak of most devices tend to be 6 months before people seem to lose interest and they upgrade to the next phone with barely any improvements. i tend to stick to a phone for at least 2 to maybe 3 gens before i swap. currently i'm on the S4 and skipped the S5 because how lackluster it is.. will wait to see how the S6 looks like, but i think the S4 will be my last samsung for a while.. my eyes are set on the Xperia Z3 coming out to sprint this fall. samsung seems to be stuck in the plastic shell generation after generation.. well this is a whole other topic
