[Q] Verizon Network Extender Issues - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else with a Nexus 6 on Verizon using a network extender? It works fine for voice. However, I cannot get a data connection through the extender. I assume its an APN issue. All other Verizon phones are getting data fine through the extender.
Ideas?
Thanks!

I don't think mine is connecting at all to the extender at work. There is no icon change.

It works for voice. I get the beeping before a call. But it is not utilizing the extender for data. Its killing me because I'm in a fringe area for coverage and its killing my battery.

I'm running cm12 and whenever I connect to a network extender I loose LTE after I connect back to the network directly. I have to backup, flash stock ROM, let the phone activate then restore my twrp backup. Major PITA...

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but has anyone found any resolutions to this issue?
I'm right at the edge of 3 towers, without my extender, I can barely text... Don't get me started on MMS... I will often miss calls also.
According to the Network Signal Info app, I'm always connected to the extender, but I get very weak signal. I rarely get 3G, if I do, it's even more rare for me to get data despite it showing 3G.
Usually it's 1x that eventually connects where I get data.
Sure, I can use WiFi, but text and especially MMS are issues. Who knows if I'm missing calls also...
Hopefully the Verizon firmware/radio files will work better when Verizon eventually releases it?

Try setting your phone to 3g instead of lte. Should jump on the extender for data. On mine it won't switch automatically.

I did try that a few times, I haven't went too in depth with that. But if I recall correctly, changing that setting just left a "!" in the signal bars, no data. How's your signal strength on the extender?

It's half way up the triangle. Orange on the signal strength under battery. But it works.

That doesn't work for me. 3G is HSPA on the N6, not EvDo like the extender requires. My workaround is connecting at home via wifi, then switching data to 1X. That solves calling, data, and SMS/MMS issues.

From what I've read in other posts regarding Verizon extenders, they are only for basic text and calls, NOT Data. Call Verizon support to confirm if you want a definite answer though.

Not true. It does data fine at both 1x and EvDo 3g. As I said, problem is, the N6 doesn't appear to work with 3g EvDo data.

Correct. I've had my extender since 2011. Without data, MMS as well as certain other Verizon features would not function.

EV-DO working now!

I just flashed the Android 5.1 radio on my 5.0.2 ROM running Chroma.
I can confirm that EV-DO Rev. A works now on the Verizon Network Extender.
When I have the network mode set to Global or LTE it keeps falling off 3G. I've set the network mode to 3G and it has stuck for a solid 30 minutes now.
Hopefully the stock 5.1 ROM will fix the 3G issue in LTE or Global modes, so it doesn't try to connect to the weak outside signals. But at least we get EV-DO now instead of just 1x!

Bought my N6 from Motorola around February.
Dialing #48 tells me I'm under network extender coverage.

hmm, thanks, no 3G option in my preferred network types on the stock rom.
I wonder if the network extenders actually validate the IMEI and that's why its not working. It worked on my old XT926.

I also have been fighting with this since getting my Nexus 6 last week...they say dial *48 and it will tell you if you are under extender coverage...which I am, yet a tier 4 tech tries to call me and it goes direct to vm.
I have changed units...still same....frustrated as heck.

I'm confused. If you have a network extender, you have Wi-Fi within the same range as the network extender. Why would you want to use 3G for data instead of Wi-Fi? Even the slowest Wi-Fi would be better than 3G data.

I am in 3G.
I have no problems when putting my sim in my tp2. And talking while surfing.
And i am not the only one. No one has givein a reason as to why.
Uh..unless you changed you radio settings to "WCDMA only" you should be able to talk and surf.
It should work. I do it all the time, but it is network dependent.
In case it works on your TP2 i suggest you check your settings.
Hey big guy are you using a t-mobile nexus one on AT&T? Or AT&T N1 on T-mobile? That used to send all my calls to voicemail while I was on the intarwebs

Incorrect. "WCDMA only" is still UMTS/HSPA (3G/3.5G in consumer speak), therefore you still get voice/data at once. I can only conclude that you're under the assumption that UMTS/GSM work the same way EVDO/CDMA does. On an EVDO network, all data goes through the EVDO network, while voice stays on 1xCDMA, because EVDO is an addon to 1xCDMA.
UMTS and GSM are two completely incompatible technologies that only share GSM backend features and a SIM card. The circuits in the phone are separate, the antennas on the towers are separate. You're either completely on UMTS for voice and data (inc. both at the same time) or you're completely on GSM (for voice or data but not both at once. In fact, if you're locked on to a strong UMTS signal, the parts of your phone that handle GSM shut down for power conservation and only wake up when your signal drops to check to see if you'll get a superior signal over GSM. It will do this periodically, but won't stay active for long unless your UMTS is so bad that you won't be able to hold a call. THEN your phone powers up and maintains the GSM radio, while putting the UMTS radio on standby, only powering it up momentarily to look for a better signal.
The only time you have GSM and WCDMA/UMTS powered on at the same time is during hand-offs from one network to the other. That's why staying in areas where you bounce between the two kills your battery so quickly, the radio is drawing roughly twice as much juice as it normally does, plus it's computing which one will do the better job for the moment. Even then, at that time, the phone and its OS will be using only one of the networks at a time, and if it's UMTS, you'll be able to hold a call and surf the web.

Attached are my settings.
I have this on every rom or radio i try.
Hey, sort of same thing just happened to me
in my case using GSM Auto (prl) or WCDMA prefered I can connect to HSDPA but GSM is in emergency calls only, weird.
but I can do both on GSM only (GPRS/EDGE)
Re-flashed to official release of 2.1 same thing.
i use voice and data on my nexus at the sme time every day. it just works. as long as you have a 3G symbol next to your reception bars, then it works.
i dont know what you could have done to break this. can you demonstrate to us what you are doing that is not "working"?

When you have bad reception, that's what happens. Normal and expected. During the call it won't re-negotiate 3G, only when the call ends.

Yeah, that is normal and it really sucks when you're on a long call. Once you lose 3G signal it's gone for good. I don't know if it's a network problem, or the phone, but it should be fixed.

Can you talk and surf at the same time with the bionic ???

I have been looking all over about this. I have the Thunderbolt but not happy with the HTC poor quality phone, and random reboots once in a blue.
So I am thinking in getting the Bionic.
Thanks.

Really? That's interesting... my Thunderbolt does voice & data on LTE or EVDO. From what I was told by my Verizon Business Data Specialist, it's actually not a limitation of the Verizon Network, it has to do with the antenna in the phone (which is strange, you would think they would have enabled it long ago on 3G).

I believe the thunderbolt has a separate "2g" radio and antenna that it can make voice calls on while using the 3g or 4g for data.
I'm not sure if the bionic is the same.

This is true. The Thunderbolt doesn't actually do simultaneous 3G voice/data, it has voice over 1X on a different antenna, then data over 3G.
It is *most definitely* a limitation of the network, running EVDO Rev. A which doesn't support it. Rev. B does, but VZ decided to skip it and go straight to LTE.
Cool. Thanks everyone. This definitely makes me want to get it.

I think what you are asking "What data services work while you are talking on your Thunderbolt?" If so, everything that I have noticed... Email, Browser surfing, and SMS messaging. Not sure about Hotspot Tethering, but would have to assume it does.
To qualify my previous statement regarding simultaneous Voice and Data, I didn't mean to say that both Voice & Data were 3G and worked at the same time... What I meant to say was that while my Thunderbolt showed a 3G EvDo connection, I could talk and surf. If the voice is going over a 1X network, I wouldn't know because the voice quality was just as good as always. It is safe to say that voice doesn't require 3G EvDo connectivity to function well.
Furthermore, if they made separate antennas in the Tbolt that made this possible, then both Berzerker7 and I were correct... though there is a limitation on VZW 3G EvDo's network, if the phone manufacturer's had just made separate antennas, then there are a lot of phones that could have done Simultaneous Voice & Data.
talk and surf
I just tested this myself and I am able to talk and surf at the same time with no problems but I was on 4g don't know what will happen when I am on 3g. Something else that I noticed what I think it is, is that voice is going over cdma and data is going over gsm. If you go to your dialpad and type this in *#*#4636#*#* and then go to phone information, you will see at the bottom it says gsm/cdma network auto. Here is where I found the code along with some other interesting info askvg.com/google-android-hidden-secret-codes Does anyone else have any info on this. Biggest question why isn't VZW advertising that you can talk and surf at the same time now...

All android phones I have used allow simultaneous voice/data with a Wi-Fi connection.
The reason the Thunderbolt is the only LTE VZW phone that can do it, Qualcomm and HTC jumped through hoops to with the FCC to get them to allow the Thunderbolt. It has a total of 4 antennas and they do not exceed the legal limit imposed by the FCC. (This is probably an attribute, although not certain, of why the battery life sucks.) Therefore you can talk and surf on 3G and 4G. This antenna combo is not on any of the other LTE phones offered by VZW (They all are not HTCs the other ones), but i'm sure the next HTC 4G phone that comes out will be able to do it on 3G and 4G if it has the multiple antenna setup from Qualcomm.

[Q] Access to more Network Mode options? XT1053

I saw a few screenshots of people's Moto X's from sprint with a bunch of options under Network Mode. I have the XT1053 (TMO unlocked, on ATT network) and the only options I see are "Auto" and "2G."
I browsed around and found that there's an LTE OnOff app, but I'm just wondering if there's a way I can get those options for 3G on my device's Network Mode option list?
The reason why I even care is because for some reason at my workplace, I can't seem to get any data through LTE. My signal will display 3 bars of LTE, but it absolutely does not work. While it will turn off LTE and just say 4G since it's on auto, I find that a majority of my day, it WON'T switch. It stays on 4G LTE 99% of the time and does not function at all. When I walk outside the building, LTE works perfectly fine. Would I be right to assume that the auto mode is literally on borderline between switching, so it never establishes a stable connection?
I guess it brings me to the question, is the Auto mode inefficient / will I have to live with manually turning off LTE every time I get to work? :/

3 bars of LTE is an excellent signal. With 1 bar of signal I can still get 15mbps down from my provider. If your phone is detecting such a strong received signal it won't be switching back to HSPA on its own. For some reason the building you're in may block the phones transmitted signal more then it blocks the signal from the cell site. I am guessing you're on band 4 LTE which has quite the frequency difference between uplink and downlink. Your only option(assuming the phone or cell site isn't defective) is to manually switch to WCDMA with a third party app such as the "LTE setting" app in the Play store. Or unlock your bootloader and flash firmware from another provider that has more options. I know the Rogers Canada firmware has an LTE on/off option, it also has a 2G only option. Sadly Rogers has not yet approved the release of 4.4 (kitkat).

That makes a lot more sense to me now. So basically the "Auto" mode only considers my reception and not transmittance strength, so it never saw a need to switch me off LTE. I am almost sure it is not my phone because I started experiencing a signal loss issue with my S3 a few days ago. I doubt it's the cell site because as soon as I step out of the building, LTE works with no problems.
I did ended up using LTE OnOff to force CDMA and I can actually do stuff now. I went and did a speedtest ...
Ping: 114 ms
Down: 4.06 Mbps
Up: 0.77 Mbps
I guess with the lack of options, I have yet another reason to roll up the sleeves and get my hands dirty. Haven't touched ABD since I had a samsung captivate!
Thank you

Cell signal keeps reverting to 3G

Hi,
So I'm having an issue keeping an LTE signal. I use straight talk with at&t and I can get LTE if I turn the radio on/off, but it will always switch itself over to 3G at some point in the same location. There are apps that can force it to do LTE only which works, but I can't make or receive voice calls over LTE.
Does anyone know how to fix this? This never happened on other phones on the same network. In my specific location I get 2-3 bars of LTE and 4 bars if switched to 3G. I guess it wants to keep using the better signal.
Also at home where I have full signal LTE and H+, it will choose H+ over LTE.
Had same problem. Switched sim slot to the other. 4g again. Try IT?
Did you try different APN settings? I'm guessing you already checked the preferred network option.

APN settings are good and I can get LTE if I flip the radio on and off...it just always wants to revert back to 3G at some point. Same thing happens in sim card slot 1 or 2

Which rom are you on? I remember there's a specific rom that has a bad modem file. Trying updating to the latest version.
Maybe you can solve it by going to APN settings and set APN protocol -> IPv4 and APN roaming protocol -> IPv4 . That worked for me. I had the same issue.
Or try IPv4/IPv6. That's network related and maybe IPv4/IPv6 is correct for you.
I have to set it every time I flash EU or EPIC rom.
Good luck.
did you ever figure this out?
I'm having a similar problem on a Note 4 Global. Only it switches to 3G for a voice call and never switches back.

I've updated it, and it's all the same. Once in a great while it will switch over to LTE on its own, but 99% of the time it will just sit on H+ forever even though I know the LTE is fine wherever I go.
I guess this is just how it's going to be.
I finally fixed this by wiping everything in twrp and flashing a newer version of the global stable rom. LTE works fine now, and it doesn't stick on H+ when I make a call anymore.

That's interesting. I guess Xiaomi fixed the bug in one of the releases. I wonder why you had to wipe everything though. What if we try to flash the latest modem. Is there a link to that? Would that work?
Would modem be the same as firmware? There's a thread on here that has those. None of them did anything for me.
My LTE problem is isn't fixed after all I guess. Once it loses LTE, it still never reconnects to it on its own and goes to H/H+ forever.
I guess the only thing that I've fixed is that it actually switches back to LTE after a phone call.
