Avoiding Burn In - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Coming from a Galaxy Nexus and Note 3 I'm pretty familiar with burn in and with this screen being as gorgeous as it is I'd like to avoid burn in to keep it looking superb!
Is there any apps to run occasionally to help with this? Any tip would be appreciated and hopefully we can save more gorgeous screens.

There is an app someone wrote that inverts colors in the app section. It actually is a standard option in LP. You can just do that once in a while. I use an app to hide navigation keys since these are mostly what will end up burning in. The status bar is less likely since the introduction of matching app colors.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.immersive

I've had my Nexus 6 since 11/17 and I have 0 burn in. I think it varies on how you use the phone. I never use 100% brightness and always use auto brightness.

I use GMD Immersive too, ok I get the point burn in maybe a minimum risk but the navigation buttons are not required too be always on, and I find then at times distracting and sometimes get in the way.
Pet peeve about GMD Immersive is you need to turn on the navigation buttons to enter text; this is a minor thing and the developer is still working on the app.

Here's my tip: don't give your money to companies choosing AMOLED panels. It just encourages them.
Like you I had a Galaxy Nexus, and burn-in was my constant daily companion. I'll never buy an AMOLED phone again, even if it means getting a non-Nexus device.

Not going to lie, it was nice having a G3 and not worrying about AMOLED burn in.

Any LED or LCD display can have permanence. Any. All it takes is a long enough period of the same static image. Your G3 is not magically immune.
OP use landscape mode as well as portrait, in combination with PIE controls.

Pie controls ?

Something really innovative from Nokia (called: Sleeping screen)

As you may notice im Nokia fan,
and im hoping for more and more
good stuff to come. And this one is awesome,
its really calm and super
cool beta application called Sleeping screen.
Recently, Nokia showed off its Sleeping Screen, its like an usual application, but with style and eye candy. While showing it off, its possible to question, will it be featured in Windows phone 7 devices, or just and WP7 app. We can say it looks really good, and Nokia just keep’s doing nice things to their phones, Symbian and future Windows phone 7 phones.
Here is the VIDEO
So what do you guys think?
Should this be featured at WP7 devices?
Looks like a really cool thing to have
Nokia Symbian^3 hmmm... progressing ..
Just another reason to look forward to my new WP7 nokia that I'll be getting as soon as it comes out...

Damn right
It looks awesome, but how much battery life will this take on modern LCDs?
even with no black lighting (or very minimal) it will still consume already limited amount of battery life.

WP7 isn't as power hungry as android to begin with and Nokia tends to have pretty great battery life so as a whole I don't think it will be a big deal.
I prefer my phone sleeping with the screen off, tbh.
Style and eye candy? I guess, if you're into that whole dot matrix resolution from the 90s.
I like the look of it etc. but I don't really think its that useful. Like I just wouldn't want to know that my phones screen is still on when its in my pocket or something. Don't know why, it would just feel weird.

Only the active pixels consume power on oled screens , so yes it should be low power
That said cooked roms already have the same app for galaxy s on android
I dont understand why modern phones don't have this feature. I remember when I still had the old Sony Ericssons (t290i, w580i, w880i) they all had a clock when the phone was in sleep mode and showed you if you have a message etc. I know all the phones had that and it's one of the features I miss the most on my current phones. Not saying that I want all that animation Nokia has, but sometimes I just want to look down at my phone to check the time, without touching it.

+1 on that. If it wasn't for my watch and the LED notification lights on my Desire... I would have gone nuts.

Soft buttons major issue

I'm amazed that when in landscape the buttons don't stick to the right hand side like they do on the GNex, it's a terrible waste of real estate.
Do you guys have any ideas if a hack will be possible to achieve this? (Given it's the case with the GNex it can't be that hard I guess?)
Should be renamed to "Soft buttons minor annoyance"
Well you say that, I think I'm going to be DSR'ing the tablet due to it.
Eventually developers will make the Nav bar hideable and most likely moveable and smaller via dpi changes like on the Galaxy Nexus. You might want to give custom ROMs a chance to mature before returning the N7.

I believe modacos rom will be putting it like that real soon

its done for a reason.
the majority of newer phones are launching with the 1280x720 resolution with hard keys, and as a result, app devs are designing apps for 1280x720 resolution. our resolution is 1280x800, so what google does is rotate the keys so it uses the bottom 80 rows of pixels, leaving the rendering area at 1280x720 for games and apps. this way, we still get games and apps at full resolution, whereas with devices that keep the soft keys in the same place, the resolution gets cut down to 1196x720, and then games get shrunk to either 1196x720 or 1196x672 with black bars.
i personally have no problem with it at the moment, but ive only had my device for a few hours of play time. ideally, i'd like it relocated to the top so i dont hit it when im playing games, but tis a minor gripe.

Yep, one of many reasons why I wouldn't buy an iPad, I felt a custom mod would fix this and indeed it did
So both the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 have dynamic capacitive buttons instead of actual physical buttons. I was actually under the impression that this black bar was a separate capacitive display from the main display. Now that I actually see a Nexus 7 in person, this black bar appears to be just a part of the screen.
So am I actually getting 1280 pixels?
If you have root, you can try GMD HideBar XDA.
And GMD GestureControl also supports Nexus7.
These are just root apps, not system mods.
So part of the 7" 1280x800 screen is being used by the controls... I guess except for videos and pictures.

Correct, apps can go full screen, like the default video player, but most don't which is very annoying playing games in landscape mode.
Just to follow up I've now enabled tablet UI (160 DPI) on the N7 and I think that deals with my issues with the softkeys, I will try a mod to anchor them to the right in landscape mod when a free one comes out.
We need a mod. A mod like the CM7 tablet settings, where you have the option to select "Softkeys Left, Right, etc". CM7 also options which softkeys you want, and in what order. Without changing dpi. That would be tits

Does Google plan to correct the Color calibration problem Grey Scale problems etc?

So I notice this more and more after someone on these forums mentioned it. But the colors on the Nexus 7 are off. Like Reddit or Google search results Blue links are slightly on the purpleish side. Can they even fix this via a software update ?
That being said its nor horrible to where I need to return it back to the store, but it puts a big down sid eon something I look at all the, now I am always comparing my colors to other Tablets.

As of right now it's unknown, they haven't made any announcements regarding the color calibration issues, but having faith in Google I'm sure they've caught wind of the color problems and hopefully will release an update with a fix.

Someone's butt hurts.
I think Google learned from the backlash with the Nexus S that you don't change a device's color calibration in the middle of its lifecycle. Google did that with the Android 2.3.3 update for the Nexus S. 2.3.2 and earlier had nice vibrant colors that really showed off that Super AMOLED display, but the dark grays were a bit purplish at low screen brightness. They released a "fix" in 2.3.3 which completely changed the color temp and the result was washed out colors and a general yellowish color tint which made it look like someone pissed on your screen. This pissed countless people off, and Google has never done anything at all about it. As of Jelly Bean, they're still using the piss yellow color temp on that screen.
Trust me, you don't want Google to fix this.

I would say no. In fact I wouldn't blame the display problems on software at all. I would blame them more on ASUS hardware. My Prime did a lot of the same thing (although much much worse). They just don't use the best components and being it is a sub $200 tablet I would bet the display isnt all that nice to begin with.
Actually,
I had not a single problem for 2 weeks, then I installed games that make use of the Tegra 3 videocard...played 20 min a game and suddenly....gray screen, washed out colors...after 10 min watching a video, suddenly the screen is back to normal and crystal clear.
Since playing those games for a short time, even the screen is gray and bright when I boot...or the battery symbol is popping up when the tab is turned off.
I suspect a hardware problem and something maybe went to hot inside and it is broken now. Also, along with the gray screen, I got ghosting as well. Will RMA mine.
Its kinda hard to tell for me.. im so used to AMOLED displays.. like the GS3 and Galaxy Nexus that i own.. also the One X has me spoiled.. but when i look at my two year old HTC LCD display i don't notice too much of a difference between the Nexus 7... but after a video or such i start notice light blues look a bit white.. like the facebook icon.. and the Orange on the headphones of the Google Music icon looks a bit greyish ..
I have no color issues at all. I wonder if I just got lucky?

There's an issue with the way the stock WebKit handles the display which isn't seen with other apps. I compared Chrome with Perfect Viewer here. So yes, there's a software problem. This might not account for all the variability people are describing, and there might be multiple software issues (see below), but it's certainly an important element.

I'm willing to bet it's just a bad batch issue, just like the users with the bezel clicking/unsticking and the backlight bleeds... especially after one user on here reported they took their old N7 back and before leaving the store, they fired up the new one to compare the two side by side. At that point they realized just how bad the old N7 screen was and just how sweet the new N7 screen looked.
I personally am quite happy with my unit, and have noticed the same color quality from other Nexus 7's that friends of mine own. In comparison to my newish laptop, it's remarkably similar in terms of color accuracy. That's also just comparing my laptop to it with the naked eye, but still. Food for thought.
I don't know the color on my device seems just fine. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I'm figuring it's a few rotten apples that have this issue.

Full screen use/LMT/Pie Solution

Many people, including me, were trying to use pie control (LMT) with no soft keys. You can turn off the soft keys by putting this line at the bottom of your build.prop
qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
But if you tried to use LMT the menu and back button did not work. BUT if you use the new faux kernel both will work.

i think PIE controls are a lot more valuable in a tablet setting, in that you're not constantly receiving notifications for stuff and the extra real estate is nice. however, i don't know how much i'll actually be using it on the phone, especially given kit kat's new abilities to go full screen already in a lot of apps, and the often transparent menus anyway. also, the N5 is tall enough already, i don't feel like the navigation bar takes up all that much space, especially when compared to a tablet in landscape where it runs across the entire bottom

not a lot yet, but i imagine a lot more apps will do something to similar to google now with the clear nav/notification bars allowing you to see content full screen
yahoo weather hides the notification bar, they could update to clear out the nav bar instead of black

For me, I enjoy using Tab UI on my phone (coming from a N4). It gives a lot of screen real estate back while still retaining functionality and ease of use. I can't wait for a rom to have Tab UI. Honestly, I'm still using my N4 because of this. I have to agree though, I can't stand PIE on my phone either. There's too much going on and swipes often do something you don't want them to do. I always feel like I want to see time or batt % too. I might do PIE just so I can get rid of the stupid phone nav bar though. Almost an inch of vertical space is gone for no reason.
Thank you for sharing !

This is such a great solution, enjoying my true 1080p in full glory. I've been using this since getting Nexus 4. The new KitKat feature to go 'immersive' has to be supported by newer versions of apps. And even then it requires more swipes & taps to use. PIE LMT navigation is 1 swipe and system wide. I just reduce the activation area so it doesn't trigger on accidental edge swipes, and it has to be from edge towards center direction (an important feature other similar implementations miss). Here's a direct link to the post for the LMT Pie v2 that works on Nexus 5 KitKat.

I would say that heavily depends on how you use a device. I have it & I use it A LOT. Mostly because I wanted a way to keep my eyes on the road & be able to change the album/song I'm listening to. I also give a lot of presentations & I use it for the laser pointer & to control the slides on my tablet or laptop.
Having said that, the BT range is pretty limited. The display is a bit hard to see outside on a bright day & there are many options that are less expensive that work in a similar fashion.
Also, as of the last few updates, you can no longer switch the time display to 12hr, which kind of annoys me. Depending on why you are even thinking about it, I would say for the average user, or power user, that NO, it is probably NOT worth it.
