Anyone know of an app that exists that allows you to set unique notifications for specific filter conditions? For example, my work send out sms and email alerts with pre-defined structures. I would like to set up an annoying alert for just those, not just the usual sms alert. Blackberrys have a similar feature that allows you to do this.
Regards
Not sure if this is what you're looking for or not but try this app.
close, but not free

this is close. i guess i am looking for distinctive sms ringtones. this tool appears to do that but has additional featuers i am not interested in. also the $30 is tuff to swallow for a bunch of other features i dont want. especially if it is going to replace my dialer.
I could have sworn that when I first used the sms widget it prompted me what application I wanted to use for the buttons, compose msg mainly. I can't seem to make it work with handcent sms, even after clearing default programs in application manager. Anyone have any ideas?
Its never asked me what application I wanted to use it with... sorry I'm of no help...
Got a replacement N1 from HTC.
Like with the first replacement, the Google "Backup" to transfer installed apps and settings does not work at all.
How can I either FORCE the "back up my settings" feature to work or is there a (FREE) alternative backup program that I can use?
well i dont think there's a way for call log and sms messages unless you use titanium backup. but what i do is use sms backup app (free) and call track (free) which run as a service at all times in teh background. sms backup sends all your texts to your gmail account in real time, under its own label, and call track sends all your call log to your google calendar in real time.
this week i needed to refer to an old text message, so i open gmail, find the sms label, and there is my complete text history in individual threads by contact in an IM style conversation, shows received and my replies. its brilliant. its a permanent record of all your texts and calls ever made.
i find when bouncing between ROMs and whatnot, that the only thing you lose everytime is texts and call log. everything else gets reloaded, like all apps get redownloaded automatically, settings get saved, bookmarks get saved, etc. so using those 2 apps basically saves me from losing anything.
EDIT: if you still have your old nexus, just install those 2 apps, and you can do a backup of everything now. it will take a little while to upload it all, but then from here forward just let those apps run all the time and you never have to worry about it again.
Thanks - I have been using call tracker. will try sms backup.
So how do I backup all my other settings (eg exchange, wifi, ringtone, ...) and apps?
As I mentioned in the OP, I can enable and disable Google's back up my settings however I want ... it just doesn't seem to work!

Is there any way to force Backup SMS to use names instead of [email protected] in the to/from (which is rather stupid)
SMS Backup & Restore app, as it says.
Call log Backup & Restore, as it says.
APN Backup & Restore, as it says.
All those back up the data to SD card.
All the rest is covered either by Google backup (if you check the "backup everything" on the old phone and don't check it when you setup a new one), or by Titanium backup.

I don't understand. It does use the names for me. All my threads in gmail are sorted by caller name.

For me WiFi is backed up by Google's backup. Ring tones are on the memory card. I don't use exchange.
For some reason, Voice Search has been active on my phone for a few days now. I am not able to terminate it, even with ATKiller. Any ideas how to remove this stupid service?
uninstall the app, if it came with your rom it might be a system app if so,
search " uninstall system app "
it sucks at names from your contact list but it is AWESOME at inputting text into emails and text messages. faster than swipe. but do what you want..
Hello all,
I have been a devoted user of Handcent for more years than I can recall back - decades. However, they have not responded to my support requests, their Play Store page is gone, and their website links to the Play Store page that is gone.
Recently I was driven to seek advice on what the community is using after Google Play Protect flagged Handcent (Next SMS) as "fake," which I know not to be true, but support is a huge factor for me in what I use.
So, let's hear it, what are all of you using and what do you recommend / not recommend?
Thanks for consideration!
I'd recommend Signal. It combines SMS and WhatsApp functionality into one app. That is just my personal choice, but there are a lot of other apps out there
I remember ditching Handcent for Textra almost a decade ago. If you like the features, check out SMS Messenger (orange icon) and QKSMS. Otherwise, +1 for Signal.
google messages, especially if you also want to have a window on your computer open to send messages
I'm trying to move all my conversations to google messages just because of the RCS feature. As the other member mentioned, you can also continue conversations on the computer
Another vote for Signal here, love it. They also have a desktop app but of course the desktop app will not include SMS/non-Signal inbound/outbound text. If you would like to have full control of text threads on the computer, you can look into the Windows 10 "phone link" feature.
Eternally grateful we're on a platform where we can actually remove the native text app and use whatever we want.
