The S-Pen on my SG Note 3 has been intermittently acting screwball for a while now and I'm hoping someone out there has any better ideas than what I've found so far.
When I have the stylus within a few millimetres of the screen but not touching it, it will mark the screen, usually in a slightly heavier line than what it makes when it is actually in contact with the screen. Makes using it virtually impossible.
I've tried slamming the thing on the desk....and other various ways of just about knocking it into next week without breaking it. I've tried various app shut down procedures with reboots....which seemed to work, for about 2 or 3 minutes. I've bought a replacement S-Pen (a cheap one, so I'm not sure it counts) which acts exactly the same.
Any more ideas?
I might as well just have a Mega or (shudder) an iPhone 6 Plus.

It's very well made and has a good heft to it, feels like quality. I've only been able to test it on my TP as N7 still on the slow boat from Timbuktoo, the TP is not as sensitive as the N7 and pressure sensitive apps don't seem to work on it so more on that when the N7 arrives. That said the stylus is very responsive and the tip does not 'stick' to the screen although I suppose it depends what (if any) screen protector you have and how tacky it is so ymmv.
The pen end is not a gimmick, it takes Parker refills so that's a big plus point, the lid clips on firmly and the pocket clip is very strong but there's nowhere to store the cap when you are using the pen as it won't fit over the stylus tip, that's a minor problem though..
I have only one big gripe but which could be a problem if you intend to use it for long periods, when using the stylus end the balance point is too far back for my liking and the stylus wants to tip back all the time, given it's weight this is noticeable quite quickly. The balance point is a tiny bit forward of the line of the cap joint which is about the two thirds mark. You can ease the problem by taking the cap off the end but that exposes the pen nib with all the dangers of drawing on your hand/clothes as well as the screen.
As I said above, it's a well made piece if kit and well worth the money, I've used a few styluses from checp nasty ones to better quality, this one is by far the best I've used yet even given the balance issue.
I got this as well and am very happy with it! This is my first tablet, so maybe I don't know what a real good stylus is, but it feels really natural to use and I actually prefer it over using my fingers. Plus less smudging and the pen is handy as well
Got my N7 this morning and have had time to play with it, compared to the TP the screen responsiveness is in another league altogether.
The stylus is smooth running across the (as yet) unprotected screen and pressure sensitivity works very well, the Kensington gets a couple more stars from me
Update, Three weeks later and while the stylus is still as good to use, the pen cap is getting loose (rubber O ring a bit thin) which means it can come apart when hung from the clip. Drops a star for that.

There is no pressure sensitivity on the Nexus 7, why do you keep mentioning this?

My guess....he's using Quill or a similar app which has a tool that somehow manages to mimic pressure sensitivity.

I wonder if there's an app that can transfer pressure sensitivity via Bluetooth or WiFi.

I spoke of pressure sensitive Apps, not the N7 screen. I can't speak for all Apps but Markers is one that responds well to the stylus. I think it may be sensing tip coverage but it goes much further than just the area touched by the stylus (or your finger) try it and you'll see what I mean.
Final thought on this stylus, I've given up on it!
The tip went soft and started dragging on the screen and I got to dislike the feel of the stylus so much (especially the surface roughness) that I had to force myself to use it, so it's consigned to the drawer. I can use the pen refill elsewhere.
Moved on now to an Applydea Maglus, opinions pending

I got the silver elago stylus for 10 bucks, made of aluminum, removable soft tip, nice length, width, weight, and it includes an additional soft tip

I've had to ditch this stylus too - after about a month of smooth note taking using Quill the stylus has started to skip when writing, i've no idea why as it still looks solid enough and the screen is fine. But it keeps dropping out and makes it impossible to use now as a stylus...
Just recieved a Smith & Wesson tactical stylus and its fantastic on the N7 so far - works really well with the pressure effects in Quill too!
So bye bye Virtuoso

Mine has become totally unusable now, the tip seems sticky and will not run across the screen smoothly.
Note 5 touchscreen sensitivity using 2 hands
Hey,
Is anyone experiencing this issue. I am coming from a S3 where it fit perfectly in both hands in landscape mode. The note 5 is thin and big and doesnt fit as nice. It kinda is a pain to hold and the edges are so thin they kinda hurt. I am sure a case will help this and plan on getting one very soon. The issue though seems to be too much sensitivity along the edges. I have read alot where there was not enough sensitivity in the s6 and edge variants and they even added in settings -> display -> increase touchscreen sensitivity. I dont see this option but why not include this to decrease or increase depending on the user's needs. Seems simple enough. I think this is locked into the settings and not configurable. If the fingers only slightly overhang it causes any touchscreen interactions in the middle to be slow or not work at all. I have little fingers so I am surprised big fingered people arent freaking out or maybe they will as the note 5 is sold more, i know its still a brand new phone and not alot of feedback yet. Anyways thought I would get the ball rolling on this. Any have any suggestions for fixing the issue and not giving me a work around (like hold it better etc..)
Thanks
YEs, I'm suffering from the same issue here. It means that (with fingers overhanging at the edge of the screen) you can get the impression the touchscreen isn't very sensitive.
Anyone have any suggestions of a good app to purchase and a good fine tipped stylus for tasks like writing on photos,etc.... Like you could do on Samsung Note devices? Since leaving my Note for this beast that is one of the things I still miss about it.
Did you ever find an app. I have a pile of note 3 stylus I can use. The stylus is the only thing that I miss after getting the the nexus 6.

The note 3 stylus unfortunately don't work on nex6. I am using 2 different note apps floating notes https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ashk.minifloatingnotes
I think I paid a small fee for added features for it
And Squid(I paid for the better eraser options but I did not buy into their monthly/yearly subscriptions nonsense)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.projectpapyrus
I bought a lynktec fine tipped Bluetooth pen and it is a giant hunk of crap. I can write just as good if not better with my fingernail and it is not the devices fault. On my nex6 I have a glass screen protector and on my nex10 I have none and it doesn't write fluidly on either. I make due with my fingernail till I find a real world solution. I mostly just take notes for work and not a lot of them so for now it is all I can come up with. Those 2 note apps I am pleased with though. If you use squid I suggest you always have the next blank page pulled up before you close the program. Somehow it erased an entire page of my notes somehow that I couldn't recover so at least if the app gets open in your pocket somehow by mistake you will have more of a fail safe I think if it was on the next blank page last.
Had a note 3 for 2 years with no screen protector and heavy use, not a single scratch. Within 3 days of owning the note 5 I've got dozens of tiny ones and two sizeable ones! I've ordered screen protectors now but obviously too late. I'm a bit confused as I couldn't find this being a common issue and I haven't changed usage habits (phone always gets its own pocket, rested on a piece of foam at desk)
Same here. Previously use LG nexus 5 without screen protector for a year plus, just a single tiny chip.
Note 5? Just a week without screen protector and 6 visible scratches there already.
I wish ANY of the reviews had mentioned this so I could've taken preventative action.
Same here guys. It's really annoyingn barely putting it in the pocket, you find little little scrstches.. bare annoyingly annoyijg

Try not putting it in a pocket with objects that can scratch the screen.
No offense, but I've never had one scratch on any screen, nor any cracked or broken screen (and never owned or used a screen protector), since I started using cell phones back in 2000.

Neither had I until this phone and like I said I have a dedicated pocket for the phone.
11 months, no screen protector ever and zero scratches
How strange.. I wonder if there's two different revisions.
In a rectangular area in bottom of screen s pan doesn't draw.Tried with samsung notes and sabre.
Otherwise, the spen works fine, like sliding, pointing and all......It's the same with hades rom and linaege rom. Why would that be ?
I sorta got a similar issue but it's the top half and only touch with my fingers doesnt work , but the spen works all over it. The last thing I recall before it happened was an alert regarding Samsung One Ui 1.0 no longer being maintained and if I remember correctly back a few years ago, there was a similar issue when it was called TouchWiz or somethinf. I've poured through manifest logs, permissions, many root files and I'm not sure but jmy speculation is some kind of way to force me to go buy a new phone

I've seen such a problem, when one half of display works only with s pen, but no fingers. It's a problem sth. called "digitizer".... From what I know it's a hardware issue, replacement needed.
It's been going strong for 6 years now andthat issue popped up just a few months ago so now time to math lol..I wonder what price of digitizer is, if that comes separate from glass,bc will need both sides in glass covering, special tool in video looks crazy?
Could i use the all the hardware guts and move them into a Tablet which is just a shell with only a screen and digitizer on it . Would have better sized screen with spen, plus leaves tons of additional room to expand memory/battery/sound/cameras

You can't move the internals to a tablet sized, the screen would require to fix on the tablet which most tablets have a different type of connector than the Note 8.
