[Q] Proposal to merge all Galaxy S family into 1 neat and big sub forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=764084
this has been discussed before. Not many thought it was a good idea since there are some differences between the galaxy S phones depending on your carrier. I for one don't want to waste my time reading through topics that don't pertain to the Captivate. Nor do i want to keep searching for a subforum when this is already in place and easily found. Again, not many people will know to look for Galaxy S instead of Captivate or Vibrant.

Agreed. If the SGS really was the same phone across all carriers it would make sense to merge all the sub-forums but seeing as how there is separate development going on for the Captivate vs. Vibrant (and soon the Epic as I'm sure things will work different with the hardware keyboard being the biggest difference)...
I would propose a shared general and themes & apps forum for all SGS users, because the hardware is similar enough that regular software is cross compatible. The development forums should be separate though, because each developing environment is different enough to have different fixes.

Agreed.
And actually when this was discussed before the majority of people thought the forums should stay combined. It was even put to an official vote (the consolidation option won) that was then ignored before the forums were split.

# shakes head in confusion
Sent from my captivate
^bump^
as i don't have any Mod power to make it a sticky, much less make the original topic cross posted across the 5 SGS forums
i think this is a great idea......if you click the link, they already have each of the development sections separated by each model, but the general, accessories, and themes sections are all put together as a "galaxy s" section. The accessories may not work so well since many of the cases and such will be different, but for the Themes section it will be great. It will allow things such as all the Vibrant fonts, swype themes, etc to be easily used on the captivate (for newbs like me that don't want to browse all the forums and test things that may work).

Actually the accessories look the same...I think even for the Epic the dock for example is the same..the only thing that will vary is pouches and cases...but thats pretty minor...and I doubt anyone will confuse it...

The case design for the Captivate is different from the Vibrant. I tried a body glove for the Vibrant and it was way to tight.
sorry about the cross forum posting guys, but until we get this other issue solved
Proposal to merge all Galaxy S family into 1 neat and big sub forum
this is the only way to keep in touch across the separate forums
I voted for it in the other thread and I still support it now. The split is hurting development, and joining them will create a much better community environment, I think. There will be some confusion yes, but there already is now. And there will be regardless. (Especially given joys like the T-Mobile Vibrant / Bell Vibrant naming wonder.)
Suggestion: if forums can be crosslinked, keep the current hierarchy more or less intact, but merge the "Apps" boards for the Galaxy phones into one (possibly with child subforums for apps that are literally specific to a carrier/model) that still appears in the list where the current model-specific app board appears (ie, it would appear as "Galaxy S Applications" under the captivate, vibrant, epic4g, international model, etc hierarches, but would all point to the same board.
Then, create another board for galaxy s development issues that are really common to two or more models -- kernel modules for sensors shared by multiple models, gps issues affecting the vibrant & captivate (& international model?), etc. Emphasize that THIS board is NOT for discussion of building new ROMs or Android Distros, but rather is more for AOSP-oriented developers getting deeper into reducing the platform's dependence on Samsung for support and drivers, and recognizing that things like the video chip and gps pretty much look the same across all of the Galaxy models from the kernel level. Once again, this would be listed in each of the model-specific hierarches, but they'd all point to the same physical board.
This addresses the bulk of real-world problems: accessories are device-specific; ROMs (I personally prefer "Android Distro", because it recognizes that they're more of a starting point zero-day configuration than a literal carved-in-stone "ROM") are device-specific. Development has some parts that are device-specific, and a big part that's family-specific. Not every Galaxy S might have all the hardware that an epic4g has, but AFAIK the subset each other model has is still wired up internally the same way, to the same i/o ports and using the same sensor chips.
If anything, there should also be forums to discuss lower-level development issues specific to a single carrier (Sprint and Verizon being two of the most obvious, since their back-end protocols for voicemail, text messaging, and other services aren't governed by a common standard the way GSM is, and DO in fact differ in some pretty arbitrary ways from each other).
So, I have no reason to be on this website besides for information of the kindle fire 2.
That thread is locked to me because the account is new.
Can I get around this besides just spamming forums? Unfortunately, the phone I have now I don't care to tamper with because I just don't like it. I am getting my real phone back in a few months, but no tinkering or needing to post in the general or QA forums.
I COULD post what I want in the QA or general for the Kindle Fire 2.....but those boards don't exist.
Although, in the end it looks like the Kindle Fire 2, and any questions I have, may just be futile from the lack of attention it has, but it would be nice to post without spamming 8 more messages that will have nothing to say :\
I guess I will go around trying to find things to say, I just wish I didn't have to basically spam, like a noob, or a bot, to get around the block that tries to keep out spammers and bots
I don't mean to be rude, but why is there Moto Maxx discussion here? I understand that these phones are nearly identical, but seeing as the thing that makes the Droid Turbo it's own device is that it is stuck inside the constraints of Verizon, I really don't want to come to this forum and see it blowing up with threads about the Moto Maxx and all of the updates and whatnot they are getting in Brazil. If I sound bitter.. I am a bit. You go to a device specific forum to not see things that irrelevant for your device.
TL;DR: Please don't talk about Moto Maxx things in this forum, it's a Droid Turbo Forum. Moderators, please enforce this.
Thanks.

While you are correct and I should have looked a little harder for that discussion, I would much rather blow up this forum wit multiple threads regarding this topic, than have this forum cluttered with discussion which is ultimately useless to members with the actual "Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo", the titular device of this forum.
Search next time.

I post here because I thought this was the Moto Maxx forum and they misnamed it Droid Turbo on accident. I was just looking at my Moto Maxx by the way and was thinking "damn, that's one mighty fine device" right before I read this post.
In seriousness you might want to read one of the several threads where this has been hashed out at length. A few key takeaways from that are... while not ideal there are reasons why separating these forums would be detrimental to both device owner groups... this had already been posted both on the official thread where it was seconded a number of times along with the threads started here meaning the moderators and administration of this forum have already seen this complaint and chosen not to act on it either in creating a new separate forum or in stopping Maxx owners posting here.
I would suggest putting your vote in on the previous thread on this as well as visiting the official forum suggestion thread and seconding the request there. Who knows make the wheel squeaky enough and maybe you will hit paydirt.
Because Moto maxx int version of turbo, i think this forum need be re-named or maxx have new área
And then there's the U.S. XT1250 Moto Maxx, which is identical to the Droid Turbo XT1254 (same FCC ID number), works on Verizon and has unlockable boot loader. It's basically the "Developer Edition" of the Droid Turbo.
If any development comes which will benefit the Quark XT1254 (Droid Turbo), it's going to come from the Quark XT1250 (U.S. Moto Maxx) or the Quark XT1225 (international Moto Maxx).
The Droid Turbo XT1254 is just Verizon's locked down XT1250 Moto Maxx.

So what?
There are many phones with carrier versions and yet, they at the very least have their own sub forums. This is due to laxness on XDA's part and has nothing to do with FCC numbers or similarities.

Look we can't do anything unless XDA chooses to... Moderators have been to these threads and it has also been posted in the forum request thread and nothing has been done... So until XDA desides to do something about this, we are stuck together!

None of the other forums are structured that way...
Not true, there are several. The latest one I was on was the Find 7a forum which later had the Find 7 added to it making 4 total variants under the same roof since they each had both a Chinese and an international variant. Those handsets had more differences than these do. It isn't a big deal there and it isn't a big deal here. Frankly without the contributions of the entire group that forum would be dead making it ideal for no one. Which pretty much sums up the future of this one as well were it to be divided.
I'm not calling any of you out in particular but right now your "lets kick those pesky Maxx dudes out" thought lhas little logical substance. So far the only reason anyone has come up with for separating it is a segment of one ownership group who feels like they shouldn't have to actually think before clicking a thread. Yes, I'm saying it is obvious by looking at most thread titles whether that thread pertains to a particular device or not. It isn't like anyone would have a bunch of wasted clicks. Further anyone that cares to bother can read the previous threads to see how easy it is to mark thread titles by device if it pertains to only one variant.
Honestly gents, what is your preference, have your own dead forum which you wont bother visiting because to do so would be pointless or dropping the "waaa" line of reasoning and going with what isn't perfect but better than nothing?

For over two years now, the Razr HD has had only one development forum for two variants,
XT926, which is the CDMA/Verizon variant, and XT925 , that is the GSM/international version.
The situation is very similar, if not identical than what we have here now with the Turbo/Maxx. The internals are almost exactly the same, save for radio.
Not saying it is ideal, but it has worked so far.

Thats it? You're going to go with "internal names"? lol I have already seen you're incapable of admitting you're wrong and the reason I posted wasn't for your benefit, it was for others that might not be aware that there are reasons why it would be a bad idea. What weighs most important in their mind is up to them and I can respect their opinions just as I respect yours although I think it is short sighted, and poorly thought out.
You are BTW wrong about it being simply a matter of laziness, you used lax but I think I understanding on what you meant? The truth is they cannot administer, monitor, and moderate an unlimited number of forum sections and there can not be one section for every possible device. Go ahead and read up on why that is in the forum faqs as I am thinking you would rather read it from the horses mouth. This is why some devices get no forum at all and there are several that are multiple device combined forums. I've been on two since I've been here myself and another fellow just mentioned one he had been on. They exist and have existed no matter how much you don't want to admit it.
Again, I would suggest you go to the appropriate area up above and second the nomination to separate these devices by whatever means you see fit. I would also suggest you go to the Find 7 section and take a look at just how slow it is despite having the devices combined. While you do so keep in mind that they are less than one year from introduction and started out with developers on board up front and far more posters contributing in the beginning on a stellar device. Note that they added a separate development threads within the section so that people could go directly to their own device development where it was not generic between all of them. Note that people were encouraged to add the device to the thread title when the subject was device specific so that people could quickly skim through it looking for information that is of interest to them.
Split this up and this section dies sooner rather than whatever later ends up being if you keep them together. Maybe you care, maybe you don't. I do care because a perfect forum with no information has less value than an imperfect one that people are contributing in.
I was by the way on the other side last time. The new guys joined us and while I didn't like the arrangement it was better than nothing. There was also less complaining for reasons that I don't know but I am curious as to why this comes up over and over here but was hardly a blip there. Maybe it is the type of people. More US influence here obviously while that one is quite international in nature.

Incapable of admitting I am wrong? Of what? Quite the immature comment. Is this some sort of childish competition for you?
No phone here is referred to by internal name. In no situation will it make things clear. In no situation will someone less tech savvy end up in the right forum. I cannot tell you how many times I've seen bricks due to people flashing the wrong firmware for the wrong device. I have my PM inbox on this forum and several others where over the years people have bricked their devices with the wrong firmware and I happened to have a leak that would put them back on the right version. The ONLY reason it hasn't happened in here is that the Turbo is still locked down. If it ever is freed, we will see bricks here unless Maxx users get their own forums, mark my words. Why, you may ask? Well I am glad you did. Because its unlikely we will get a full firmware leak to restore from.
I am wrong about it being laziness? Yes I originally said laxness, for lack of a word to explain their lack of caring, rather than being lazy, LOL.
Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 4
T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 4
Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 4
AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4
Samsung Galaxy Note 4
All full forum sets. I can find other examples. Stop huffing and puffing because you think we want Maxx users kicked out. No, I rather the information be separated for logical reasons. It has nothing to do with your ego, nor mine.

No it isn't.
This device sells as well as Nexus devices, easily.
Samsung Galaxy S 4 i9500, i9505, i9505G, i9506 if they want to compact it a bit, they could have. Each one has its own developer forum. Same with Nexus devices.
There is no excuse for it. The only other device treated this way is the HTC One M8 for Windows.
Hi all,
I just purchased 6 cyber monday 7" fire tablets. Think I paid $30/ a pop. I did so with the expectation of modifying them all for my kids. My hope is that I can maximize the hardware purchase by rooting the tablets, but realized, as of this post, that there are no known solutions on OS version 5.4 (which is how they shipped) or 5.6 which is what they update to almost immediately when connected to wifi. Given the price I am confident that a ton of these were purchased and am therefore hopeful that a solution to the rooting dilemma will be found with the large demand out there.
I thought I would post, to create a location for the latest information on rooting the device, and to hear from others out there who may be in the same position. I'd like to find out what others are doing to mitigate the limitations of the Fire OS until a root solution is found (if it is even possible...as I have little knowledge in the field of hacking). For me personally, I find the biggest drawback is not being able to connect (fully) to Chrome. The main perks for me being gmail, calendar, all bookmarks. I think I could live with the cumbersome Fire interface if I could access Chrome. Conversely, I think these tablets will eventually become paperweights if I can't make them more Android like.
I have been using it to video stream and watch MP4's while in bed, with an external bose bluetooth speaker of course (the onboard speaker is a dog). I also am using it as my main kindle reader, replacing a Kindle 3 wifi that recently blew its screen. I will have to get more out of it if my children, who are android phone and chromebook users, are to find it useful.
Let's hear what others are doing and if anyone has gotten wind of solutions being worked on.

I accept the rules of the forum but do have the same questions, reading since hours and do not have a final glue as well.
This might be a good starting point:

There are hundreds of threads mixed different kind of devices 7'' 8'' 10'' GEN5 ,6,7...
For a beginner with the device this is a quite confusing situation, so if some one has a hint or link where to start to read - all help is very welcomed.

Sounds like you scored an early build 5th gen device (likely 18-24 months old). Not many of those pups around!
No need to root or even boot up FireOS v5. You can launch TWRP directly from fastboot and immediately install the custom ROM of your choosing (likely Fire Nexus or Lineage 12.1).
so how do i launch twrp? and I can choose ANY rom?

Best take note of post date when quoting another member. In this case the post was nearly a year old.
Thread closed - course run.
Folks be gentle,
I am very new to the Android community as I have used IOS for nearly every aspect of my day to day life. I have an older Kindle Fire HD 7" that I purchased back in 2012 to use on deployments overseas with the military.
I have not used it in probably 4 years or more and would love to get something out of it. My first instinct was to see if I could load a Linux based OS on it but I am running into issues since its such an old model It seems like most of the literature is out of date and links do not work. I was interested in Ubuntu touch (looks very promising)
I am certainly not lazy but I am just not finding the right info. I see that TWRP is necessary to do this as well as rooting the device.
I am an IT Professional and I am lost in this realm as there is so much ubiquitous information out there that often leads to dead ends and frustration.
I have read about using Apk's and using the ess file system, to load the root but that seems to never work (parsing error).
The point of the project is to get some use out of a nice piece of tech that is perfectly usable and not toss it on the trash heap or into a thrift store somewhere. If that is possible I would love to get some help here from some of the experts.
I am begging for some help. Anything you can offer up: links, leads, files, whatever is beneficial at this point. I feel like something that should be so easy is making me crazy lol.
This thread has everything you need to know about getting TWRP installed. It links to other threads, and within those threads some of the links are broken. Just go to the last couple pages of those threads and you might be able to find somebody who rehosted them. If you decide to install an Android ROM, crDroid is the latest/most up-to-date. Good luck.
