Signal switches from LTE to HSDPA wtf? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Where I live I have decent LTE signal strength about -85dbm in the house. Currently my phone says LTE, but if I make a phone call the network automatically switches to H, and internet is incredibly slow. When I get off the phone the network will still stay on H but internet browsing speeds will improve.
Restarting the phone does not seem to fix the issue, and it will take hours for it to go back to LTE. The only way I've found I can get it right back to LTE is by calling T-Mobile and having them reset my phone to the cell tower and I will regain full signal.
Can someone explain to me what in gods name is going on. I'm running stock android 5.0.1
Thank you

Nexus 6 does not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) on T-Mobile network or VoLTE is not in your area. That is why its changing to HSPA speeds when you make the phone call.
The connection to HSPA should go back to LTE after your phone call is done though, even though it isn't doing that for you.

Thank you. But is there any reason when switching to the HSDPA network and on call my service is so miserably slow? Its like being in a 14.4k modem. Takes forever to load something.

Have you tried updating your modem/radio? Verified APN settings? New SIM card?

I have T-Mobile and there's no VoLTE where I live but the speeds are still 20mb/s with H+ while I'm on a call. VoLTE would be nice but I don't think its enabled in any network for the Nexus 6 yet.

Hopefully when N6 gets TMo WiFi Calling, VoLTE support gets added. It would be nice

I updated the radio when I flashed the newest 5.0.1 update. I did the update manually so I know I flashed the updated radio... This was one of the issues I had with the original 5.0.0 software that I was hoping the update would fix.

How do I verify the APN and make sure everything is correct with that?

[Q] 4g data problems at home

It seems I have very good 4g signal at my work but when I am at home, it gets stuck on either 1x or 3g, according to sprint, there is 4g coverage on my house.Does anyone have problems with 4g not working properly? Its getting me annoyed since I use hotspot at my house. Any suggestions would be helpful.
I've noticed it'll show 3 bars of 4g at home, but if I actually start browsing it drops to 3g. My friend had done nothing but complain about sprints network so I am just assuming it's their problem.

I'm having the same problem! My friends iPhone gets better reception, and we both have Sprint. He gets LTE at my house in my office, but I get 3G or 1X. It's very frustrating. I may return the phone, or leave Sprint altogether, as I didn't have these problems with my Verizon Note 2.

I have used sprint chat with an agent and followed every troubleshooting method and still 3g. I will check the store to see if I can exchange it for another phone or see whqt happens
Could just be a week signal. Note that the signal bars on your phone are NOT for 4G. Check out this helpful write up over at S4GRU could help you determine what is up once you check LTE signal levels.

[Q] 4G or LTE with Straight Talk AT&T?

After weeks of playing around with build.props, APNs, and patches, on custom ROMs and stock, I am still attempting to get faster and more consistent data.
4G and LTE are supposed to be possible, but I can't figure it out.
I can get around 5 Mbps down using WCDMA only, but the very next moment in the same spot could be something entirely different.
My mobile data goes out quite often where it is just the outline of a triangle. I have never seen any other letters besides an E and a H.
I am currently on stable CM 10.2.1 installed on a newly created and wiped SS Slot 1, and have been for about a week and a half.
I used default network = 0 in build.prop this time around.
I finally managed to get my phone to recognize my SIM card while using the following configuration:
default network in Phone Testing = LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) and
preferred network mode in Mobile Network Settings = Global (CDMA/EVDO/LTE/GSM/WCDMA).
It acted really strange at first but the settings stayed even after a handful of reboots.
I am using Straight Talk's current APN settings (tfdata).
My dBm is constantly going from about -90 something to -108 and my asu ranges from around 3 to 14.
Before I just now rebooted, and every so often, it shows 2147483647 dBm and 255 asu; I have only just noticed this in the past few days, however. It is now back to -101 dBm and 6 asu after restarting.
I have attached screenshots of it doing that and a shot of "normalcy", as well as my last few speed tests.
Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong?
Should I try default network = 10 again in build.prop?
Or could anyone provide a copy of a build.prop working on all possible network modes (with the ability to edit APNs)?
Thanks in advance. I will take any and all advice or opinions.
I am so over trying to figure this out! When I really need my mobile data, it doesn't work!
I have attached a couple of graphs of my signal highs/lows etc. These results are from the Real Signal app.
I don't really know what they mean, but I am hoping they might shed some light on my issue and I'll get an answer from someone.

How are you getting it to get edge data? On mine I either have HSPA or nothing. Is there a way to make it default automatically to edge when the HSPA signal gets weak. I tried using liquid smooth 4.2.2 and changed it to 2g only and never could get signal. Change it to auto and get HSPA again

Not really sure how, and when it is on Edge, data hardly works anyway, so I probably can't help you there.
But I do have default network = 10. Only other thing I changed was telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=0 to get the APN menu under mobile networks.
However, at the moment (and the majority of moments), with Wi-fi off, I have no data, -109 dBm, 5 asu, GPRS service is disconnected, and my phone number is "unknown", so I am definitely not in the position for giving suggestions.
Am going to try CM 11 again today, but I was hoping for some answers before doing anything other than installing..
I will ask more specific questions in the hopes that someone, anyone, can provide some sort of idea for at least 1 of them..
Is it even possible for the Bionic to have consistent, non-frustrating access to 2G, 3G, 4G, and LTE when unlocked for the AT&T or T-Mobile networks using Straight Talk?
Is there a way to enable the APN menu without changing the build.prop?
Does anyone have a targa build.prop (entire thing or line changes) of phone that has reliable data, etc. working on 2G, 3G, 4G, and LTE?
Could it be an issue with the SIM card itself?
Am I even approaching this from the right angle?
Should I just give up and get a new phone?
Thanks in advance.
Patch Idea
I am a novice at best and that may be a stretch.
BUT. Both of my Bionics are running on Straight Talk AT&T 4G sim cards.
One is a hardware REV-B the other is hardware REV-C.
The REV-C is rooted and running on the Jelly Bean stock rom.
The REV-B is rooted and running on a MoKee MK4.4 KitKat Release that I downloaded
from their site and opened in "Safestrap".
I do not think that I have achieved 4G yet however,
I do have fairly stable signal and data since
I installed a CDMA to GSM patch that I found searching these forums.
It includes Straight Talk and AT&T APN!
I am not aloud to post links yet. But if you search for these things here you will probably find them fairly quickly.
I would love to know if you can achieve 4G!
Good Luck!

Force HSPA+ instead of 4G?

Does anyone know how to force the note 4 to use HSPA+ instead of 4G?
The reason why i ask is because in areas where i cannot get 4GLTE the note 4 goes into 4G and its basically unusable (~1mbps maybe, most of the time i cannot even perform a speed test) eventhough the 4G is with 5 bars. In the same exact area HSPA+ gets very good speeds of 6mbp+
To test this, i forced 4G on my note 4 at my house and got a 1mbps speed test. Before upgrading to the note 4 from t-mobile i had an old note 2 from verizon running H+ getting 6mbps+ at my home.
Update: i really think the note 4 or the modem is causing the issue. Testing again my my house. When i first force the 4G connection the speed test are horrible. (< 1 mbps). After some time it seems idling in 4G it seems i got pushed into H+ reframed?(but still 4g icon) and getting consistance 6mbps.
I also noticed that the note 4 drops LTE to 4G at 2 bars or so when LTE speeds is definitely present and running at 20mbps
Hspa+ shows as 4g. If you go to other network settings where the apn is you can select lte, wcdma, options. In remote areas my 4g speed is better than my lte . The lingo is kinda weird so every carrier has different definitions of 4g. Hspa+ is technically 3.5g lol.
The app Advanced Signal Status let's you choose your network type.
Install it from play store and lock it to what you want. Try phone calls and SMS for the modes you try because some modes will be data only.
I noticed this today at home. I forced it to WCDMA mode only, it took like 10 mins for it to eventually show "4G" at my home office. The signal and download speed were terrible when forced into WCDMA hspa mode+ (4G) . In the same room and home my Note 3 would get a very good signal this time last year when I used the Note 3.
Perhaps T mobile has done something to the cell site here? Or The Note 4 isnt working as it should?
Ive had the same issue. So i work in one city and live in another. So when i get to work my data is slooooow. I force it to 4g and after a while back to lte. Speeds are fine. Same thing happens when i get home. Tmo told me to just restart my phone but that doesnt always work
Same situation with me. LTE tower doesn't reach my room but I got 10mbps in my living room....and my room I get less than 1mbps and goes to lte to 4g often with very slow speeds. I even have a LTE booster which doesn't really help much with speed. Without the lte booster I get almost 0 signal in my room
I used to have same problem during lte upgrade in my area. On lte around 8+ up and down while on 4g speds were 15-20 down and less than 2 up. Ping times were longer on 4g. After upgrade I no longer need to switch between lte and 4g

But is T Mobile removing their 4G HSPA wcdma towers? I used to get a very good db signal in my office, now -115db at best for 4G in same location but band 4 700Mhz is now present? Any relationship between these ...
See the below screen shot. On that menu you can pick the non LTE function and force H+. You can also switch back to LTE.

Thanks I had already figured out how to.force a specific data connection , hence why that thread I posted was asking what the default option is, since I didn't write it down.
But back on subject, 4G next to non existent now at home after 700mhz band 12 availability.

What is UMTS? I never get Hspa+
I've found that my data is ridiculously slow (I'm talking edge speeds) when I turn WiFi off, even when I am in an area that gets a strong LTE signal. I feel like my device does not automatically connect to the best available tower; rather, it seems to try to latch on to whatever tower it was connected to before I connected to WiFi. Toggling "mobile data" off then on again seems to reconnect my device to the closer/better tower and the speed improves drastically. (It's possible that toggling airplane mode or network modes will do the same thing). When you are in an area that has poor LTE, you might consider keeping it off. Change the selection from “LTE/WCDMA/GSM” to just “WCDMA/GSM” and you'll be on the slower HSPA+ network (though, I believe it still shows the 4G icon). You can always change it back when you are in a better area.
4G is back up and running in my home location. Must have been temp disabled when they rolled out 700mhz band 12 LTE in my area.

T-Mobile. Let the device sit overnight and it got LTE back. So it seems either the LTE radio in this device is terrible compared to my Note 3, or it just won't attempt to get back onto LTE all that often. Or my Devices LTE radio is messed up.

Telus Canada. XT1103.
Mine would stay on H+ after a call for a long time. I sometimes "force" it to connect to LTE by toggling cellular data and off in settings. Or a reboot.
Have tried the *#*#4636#*#* menu to change to "LTE only", but won't even connect to LTE in this case.
This feels like a software issue. Clearly it's not a network or hardware issue, since it can connect to LTE.

if its not connecting to lte when you set it to lte only, then you either dont have lte around when you set it or its an extremely weak signal.

Unfortunately, it depends a lot on where you are. The office building that I am in is very bad for LTE, signal at my desk is -100dbm, if I go outside it switches up to around -60 to -70dbm. If I choose 3G as the preferred network, sitting in exactly the same location the signal goes to -75dbm 19 au. If I am at my apartment, the LTE signal is much stronger there. This of course effects the battery life also. I am not sure if there is a way to default which LTE band is used since I think Telus only uses band 4 for LTE but I am not familiar with how the phone determines which band to use or if it keeps scanning all of them.

No, where I was testing it, LTE was strong. I also had a Nexus 5 right beside it, and it had no problem acquiring a full signal.
With the Nexus 6, after a reboot or the data toggle, it acquired LTE, again almost full signal.
So I decided to just leave it alone and use it as normal without worrying about LTE or H+. I did not toggle data or reboot, just leave it as is. I just observe. After a few days, it seems better in that it will be connect to LTE a short while after a call, and behaves like how I expected it to like on the Nexus 5.
Of course, immediately after a call, it will stay on H+. If I really wanted LTE right then, I just toggle the data on/off from settings (not by setting to "LTE only" in *#*#4636#*#* menu).

Force phone to stay on lte without losing calls and text?

Is there a way to make my phone ALWAYS connect to lte whenever there is ANY signal for it without losing calling and text? I know that if you go into *#*#4636#*#* you can force the phone to stay lte, but if I do that I loose calling and texting capabilities.
My problem is my building has lte signal thought, but my phone thinks 3g is better in the first floor so it connects to it... Forcing it to lte with *#*#4636#*#* works for data, but calls and text don't go through at all.
