[Q] Question about data caps and tethering - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm starting to get a little worried by what I'm reading in the N6 forums. I've been building my own roms for my devices since i've had my Nexus 4. I would just sync AOKP's repo and build it. This is because AOKP always had whatever was needed to skirt not only tethering caps, but data caps in general. Unfortunately AOKP seems to be dead.
I use my device as my internet wholly so its very important I keep that. I haven't activated my N6 because of this. As I usually use around 400GB a month.
Do any of these new roms for the N6 have this? Is this something I could build/add in on my own? I'm not concerned with the tethering bypass as I know that can be achieved with the DUN workaround.
It would be fantastic if someone could point me in the correct direction about the info that makes this possible. I would be extremely grateful. Thank you devs that make this stuff happen.

Why not just get unlimited data plan.

Because I would rather not give any more money than I must to a company to regularly takes steps to monetize on the data I already pay for. Subscribers should be able to use whatever data as much as they please.

I'm not exactly sure I understand what you're asking about here. You realize that data caps from your plan can not be bypassed no matter what you do. If by that you mean tethering data caps than yes, a simple mod can be added to stock and no root is really necessary, although it is easier to do with having root.
If by some other way you are talking about bypassing data caps on your plan then I'm all ears on how that's possible.
BTW, none of the US carriers have unlimited tethering plans so there isn't enough money you can give them to allow unlimited tethering. Unless of course your outside US.
Also, I guess you're the one sucking everyone's bandwidth on that one tower around your house. Who is your provider?

Maybe I'm just some freak occurrence, however my wife who is on the same plan as me (Tmo $30) gets capped at 5GB every month on a stock rom, I on the other hand use anywhere from 2-400GB's a month. I've also noticed that it works on some roms, but not others.

Are you talking about pre paid or post paid plans? They don't limit data on post paid its just 5gb of LTE then its 3G for the rest of you go over until your next billing cycle. I have the Unlimited LTE talk and text plan and so far I'm at 30gb and its still LTE speeds so they don't throttle the unlimited plan.

What plan are you on? If you're on the T-Mobile unlimited than it's understandable that they won't throttle you because they think you're using your phone and not tethering.
Again, there is a hack to bypass the carrier check, which allows them to know you are tethering.
If you've cooked your own ROMs before surely you know what to do.

All tethering apps have been removed from the market!

Yeah. The title pretty much explains the situation in the ****ing "open" market. T-Mo decided to use its muscle to remove all apps that let people tether.
Yay open-ness. Seriously. What the hell.
Atleast I still got mine...Ive only had my G1 for a month, its rooted, and ive only used about 400mb (tracking from netsentry) this month using tmobile data.
I like being able to tether, that sucks they removed them..guess people will have to find them online...
sorry but you are wrong, i still see wifi tether for root on the market. sorry but you are wrong there are still tether apps out there, maybe search or update your handset
i have tether still
I still have the android.tether.apk file on my computer. I can reinstall anytime.
I noticed today also that all tethering apps have been removed. Why is this? Glad I already have "wife tether for root users" installed.
Not to be the noob here...but what is tethering?
I also do not see any tethering apps.....
Yes, looks like the tether apps were removed.

Sucks that T-Mo exerted their muscle, but I understand Google's position.
They didn't rip existing installs from devices, and they're not running around threatening to sue people for making the apps available elsewhere. With XDA we'll still be able to get apps like this anytime we want, and even better expert reviews of how well/poorly they work.
you can find some of them here slideme.org
They were removed from the market for a reason. Tmo doesn't want ppl leeching off a newly implement 3g network and causing problem for everyone else. You will use more bandwidth on a computer then through your phone, messing up other peoples experience. This is most likely the reason for the removal. It is an open source device that has the source available to anyone that wants to use it. But if it a service that is not offered by tmo and people are doing it anyway they are going to have it pulled. That is why you root your phone and then you can still use it. Tmo unlike att doesn't charge you and extra $10 or $20 (not sure of the price) to tether devices on there network. It just at this point is not a feature through tmo. It may be right now it is not. Remember it is a new network the 3g is and they are going to want to make sure it is working correctly for everyone. I guarantee that if they could be limited to only using 2g/edge to connect while tethering, it would not be a problem. You can't please everyone, some want consistent wireless service and don't want their rates to go up, some want tether and don't to be bothered to have pay for there own internet for the computer or use a wifi hotspot to connect.
The Irony of this was I was coming to xda to get the updated version of wifi tether. But you can't be mad at tmobile for stopping customer from breaking the rules as it is in your ToS that it is not intended for this purpose. Tmo does a lot of things for its customers as a courtesy and doesn't charge for them like other providers do.

thanks for the heads up, i just coppied anetshare to my SD
I had just performed a wipe when I saw that wifi tether was gone, however it was still in "my downloads"
This effing blows. So much for an open market. If this is how the market is gonna work then it's no better than Apple's app store. I don't care that I can get the apps from other sources, it's a matter of principle.
And the "T-Mo doesn't want people to leech off of their 3G network" excuse does not hold up either because far from all Android devices are running on a T-Mo network. My carrier does not give a damn if I tether or not. I have my 20 gigs of HSDPA per month to whatever I like with and when those 20 gigs are up I get 200 kbit/s unlimited to do whatever I like with. Android is supposed to be independent, not some effing playground where the big carriers can flex their muscles and make the Android experience ****tier for the rest of us. If T-Mo wants to block tethering apps, let them, but don't f-ing block them for all of us, Google.
Do no evil, huh?
I signed up for Web n Walk Max....
http://lastmile.t-mobile.co.uk/data...t_category_id=&product_manufacturer_id=#link6
Being able to tether is part of the T&C. Thats the whole point of getting the "Max" rather than just Web n Walk or Web n Walk Plus......
T-mobile USA doesn't have control over the market. They can ask Google to remove something but doesn't mean its going to happen.

Why would Google go out of their way to jeopardize a very good financial partnership with the only current carrier to offer their OS? I'm not saying I agree with them but it's best to understand both parties motives.

They didn't pull it because they were worried about 3g being affected by the computers if that was the case they wouldn't be selling the 3g data card.

Question about AT&T Data plan

Hello,
So, I just flashed my phone with Windows mobile 6.5. I found this cool little app someone added so you can share your phone data connection via wifi.
Now, I have a pda unlimited connection plan. However, does anyone know if you can get caught by ATT for not having a tethering plan?
Thanks for the info and great site!

I cannot tell you about the ATT Dataplan, though usually you'll have to do big numbers in data for any provider to notice!
But what I *do* want to ask is where you found the app, which one is it, and how stable is your phone with it?
I tried a few on my kaiser, and they always hang the phone!

Possibly... But HTC recently developed their own "Wifi Share" or "WiFi Internet Sharing" app (which supposedly will come free of charge with their new ROMs) of which there are several versions floating around as well...
are you talking about htc's internet sharing app? going over 5GB of data a month gets AT&T suspicious

It is the CM or OM internet sharing. Found it came with the windows 6.5 23049 TCP_Stock-like WWE. Everything works well. Funny thing is with the old windows 6.1 I only had 3G. After the upgrade, I now also have HSPDA service. However, I have to say the new IE 6 mobile is nothing great. Skyfire has far better flash support.
Today a guy and I where talking about phones. He has the Iphone 3g and thought it was great. Until I pulled out my phone and went to youtube on skyfire. He did not say much after that. Just started watching the video and tried other flash apps.
These older phones are still great! About 2 weeks ago I was ready to sign another two year contract for the iphone 3gs. Now I am going to wait until the next iphone, Motorola Cliq, or HTC Hero.
Thanks again for the advice!
Mike
haha you should have tried to do anything other that and he would have busted his phone back out and ran his mouth..
As long as you do not go crazy; AT&T will never know. I think there is a real amount of data they look for. But from what I have heard, if you use a total of 5 GB of useage(not just downloads); it throws a red flag. They believe you cannot use 5GB on a phone and basically, even though the plan is unlimited, it is not really unlimited.
Check out the AT&T Tilt FAQ's in the Wiki. And look for tethering
Also for fun do a google search for "man gets $85000 cell phone bill for modem use"; that is what happens if you use your phone as a modem all the time.

[How To] Easily get your MSL - Root Required (No PC or Verizon involvement Needed)

Saw this on the Evo forums and figured it would help some people out over here that may not have gotten their MSL yet. As the app says it may freeze your phone, if this happens you WILL need to do a battery pull, sorry just a side effect, also this is great for people wanting to flash their phones to other carriers, updating your PRL manually, and a few other uses. Also just about every Verizon phone i've laid my hands on have had the MSL/SPC "000000", so please report back if it differs from this, as i have yet to try it on the Incredible.

There is an app in the market called "MSL Reader". I ran it and it gave me my MSL. Seems like it just came out. If you can, please confirm if it works for you. It took all of two seconds to download and give me my MSL.
The developer of the app is a user on xda called mmastrac and he has a few posts in this thread. Seems pretty cool and responsive to updates. ALL credit goes to him, I just stumbled on the app and happened to post it on xda before he did If you have any issues with the app, you should be able to get a hold of him on here.

Could always try to sweet talk a rep into adding it for you. Something along the lines of: I lost my phone and I have no insurance on the phone. I don't have the money to outright buy another phone so I purchased one from my friend, can you please add it for me? (can get Evo's from craigslist for around 300-350)

Ummm...because I have 500 anytime, free nights after 7, unlimited weekends, unlimited texts, true unlimited data (no caps) all for the price of $25.43 per month. And most importantly, I'm using an Incredible on it. I won't be giving up Sero anytime soon.
Granted I left Verizon 4 years ago but have been very happy with Sprint. I will say that Verizon does have better coverage but Sprint works fine in my area and I have not had too many coverage issues while traveling.

I return the phone because of this crap and after 8 years with at&t I canceled my service.
Check your account plan see if they change anything and check sites on the web like streaming sites.
It doesn't let me stream like from justintv on lte but when I switch to wifi I have no problem.
well on my iphone i was using an unlimited plan for $30mon, with this vivid, im charged $30mon for unlimited. im not really understanding the difference here. im hoping its not something obvious but as far as i can tell, its the same service except i have 4g
edit
i think i get it, its restricting data intensive apps. well tbh, im glad they do that. imagine everyone doing data intensive apps on the network... it will make it slow and might even crash it. when i go to the local theme park, no one can hardly use the internet on there phones cause its so slow that many times it will just time out. so many people are using there phones while theyre waiting in lines that the cell tower cant handle it all.
There is no difference for me.
Good, now people can't hog so much data, it won't kill the network.
In all honesty, all you probably have to do is root the phone, and kill some background app, and you'll have full functionality again.

I thought maybe if being on the enterprise data plan might remove the blocking and changed to the 4GB Enterprise Data. But still being blocked.
Well first I am Glad they are limiting things as stated before it will keep network intensive stuff down which should in turn make the network in general function better. Also if I recall correctly on a different device there where apps that were blocked from being installed over 3g but once root was achieved it was bypassed so I wouldn't worry about it too horribly much considering I think the change was in the software.

And you want a lovely nice bottle neck with that too right? Considering if they allow Large files to go down they will Bottle Neck considering the network they have is still shoddy I mean hell look at what happened when the 1st iPhones were released and Everyone was downloading stuff almost immediately...Network Crashed. So Either it's yay have unlimited and watch the network crash because it got too congested and Not be able to use your Data At All or deal with the slight restrictions and go home or to a Wi-Fi area which there are plenty of and Download the stuff there.
But as I stated in the post prior I am guessing it is probably throttled some where in the software like previous phones have been and it is just a matter of rooting and finding the code and changing it.

Works just fine on the Dolphin Broswer.
As for limiting, this also says it on 3g, however my corporate exchange and intranet sites work just fine. I have yet to have anything blocked except the same things many people do like block file size for an app that wants you to use WIFI.
i've had no problems so far...a few hickups while video chattin..but otherrwise im enjoyin my $30.00 unlimited plan.
I have had the Family Unlimited Data Plan for years, Since the Blue Angel, then Apache.

Your plan was not a Smartphone data plan it seems to me. Looks like you reaped the benefits of it for some time, time to pay the piper.

Just got 8mb/s while wifi tethered to my bionic's 2 bar 4g signal. Nice!
Is the data usage trackable by verizon? Their has been a concern with tethering because some say verizon can tell the difference between normal phone data usage compared to tethered data usage.
i'm not an expert by any means, but I used wifi tether all the time on my D1 and had zero issues with verizon.
i also know that before this update, wifi tether would activate the native HotSpot app and not let you connect. I'm banking on the fact that wifi tether now bypasses the hotspot app, we're in the clear...
Again, these are just my thoughts, not confirmed to my knowledge.. (but i'm also saying with all the wifi hacks, we would have heard of someone getting caught by now)

Or maybe that's Verizon's way of getting us to think we're in the clear, to lure us all into breaking contract and cancelling our free data plans!
I'm pretty sure they can tell, I just don't think they care unless you get stupid with it. We are after all a very small percent of their user group.

Well, I decided I would take a bullet. I let a friend tether on her laptop for a while. If Verizon charges me, we'll know, and I'll chalk it up to experience. If they don't sweet, and I'll let everyone know.

A far as I know you can't...& I'll confirm that this app is 100% go on my bionic running liberty v2.0
Anyone confirm this hides the fact the phone is tethering to other devices?
33 gB of usage this month
i can confirm that this works to tether to any device. sometimes you have to change the default gateway (192.168.11.100 to .13.1 etc)
i've been using it as a replacement to home internet for a couple months now.
no word from verizon, and i called them the other day about adding a line / other stuff.
i dont pay for comcast anymore.
