Does anyone know of or have an RUU version that works on Windows Vista? The version included in the "Update your phone on Widows Vista" thread doesn't work. It gives a "this utility is out of date" error every time.
Note that the driver instructions given in the above thread work perfectly! However, Vista users are still stuck without a working RUU.
I've searched through these forums and beyond, but haven't been able to find a solution. All of the other RUU's posted here fail, as does the RUU I extracted from AT&T's latest update for the Wizard (which is not a WM6 update, I know. I just tried the RUU that's in the update.)
I'm able to update my Hermes on Vista all the time, using RUU Wrapper. However, the only method I've gotten to work for my Wizard is ShellTool. That, however, fails about 75% of the time, so I have no reliable way to update my Wizard. I don't have access to an XP system, and dual booting my desktop is out the question.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Exactly the same problem. Help would be appreciated
same here -.-
Has anyone found a way to upgrade to any WM6 ROMs on Windows Vista? I'm sorta at my wits end here!
In the Wizard Upgrading forum there is a thread "Upgrading your phone on Windows Vista". The driver instructions (which are really well written) work perfectly, but the RUU version fails with an "out of date" error.
There have been a number of other RUU versions suggested, but they all crash on Vista.
Shelltool works on Vista only about 25% of the time. Usually it just starts the flash process and hangs indefinitely. I was able to successfully flash XM6r4, but since then nothing else I've tried has worked. I did go back to the latest AT&T ROM afterwards, but haven't been able to get back to WM6 since. One of the things I tried was extracting the RUU from Cingular's update, but that one didn't work either, which confuses me even more!
All of the RUU Wrapper versions I've used to flash my Hermes work great on Vista, yet none of the RUU versions seem to be able to do so on my G4 Wizard (Cingular 8125).
Please, if anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate them! I've searched and searched through the forums for different methods and versions, but have come up empty handed.
FWIW, I don't have access to an XP machine, and dual booting is not an option for me.
Thanks!
Dual Boot!
I just ended up dual booting XP, I noticed you said it was not an option, but did you know you can do it without reformatting through computer management in Vista?

Yep! Unfortunately that's not an option either. It's a matter of resources. I'm stuck with Vista, on which, I should point out, I can upgrade my Hermes successfully 100% of the time!
The RUU versions used to flash .nbh format ROMs to my Hermes all work, yet the older versions which take the .nbf format ROMs used by the Wizard don't!
There's got to be some solution. Using Shelltool usually works, but that only flashes the OS, not the ExtROM, splash screen, etc, so it's really only part of the solution.
Hmm i myself had some problems with flashing using Windows Vista. here are some observations i had
1) i first flashed using the origional tmobile rom (3.08 spl/ipl with 2.69 radio) i flashed it without doing anything special besides putting it in bootloader mode
2) next when i tried flashing it with a cooked rom it wouldnt work ( again i just tried to flash from bootloader mode without following any of the instructions givin in the Upgrading with Windows Vista thread)i found the RUUupdater version to be 2.0?? ( im sorry i forget the exact version numbers)
3) On checking the RUUupdater of the Tmobile that worked i found it to be 2.5???( again i forget teh exact version but suffice it to say it was newer)
4) i copyed the cooked rom nbk files to the Tmobile origional rom folder ( the one that worked on updating) but unfortunatly it wouldnt work
5) i then went to the thread and downloaded the drivers and installed them as the instructions said i should
6) i then downloaded the VistaRUU file they had there and then copyed the nbk files to that folder and VIOLA i flashed it and it worked like a charm ( again i flashed in bootloader mode)
This was just my experiance hopefully someone can figure out what i did right and why it worked for me and hopefully make it work for everyone else having problems
I thought there was a thread somewhere here about how to use Vista...if I remember, it may have even been stickied.
There was a stiki but it seems to have been unstikied and has since gone outta sight
Was this the thread??
It is still stickied if it is the thread.
I don't use Vista, so I haven't really read through it.

What do you mean by putting the phone in bootloader mode first? In my experience, the phone has to be booted fully in order for the RUUs to work. Is there a way to get it to recognize the phone if it's already in bootloader mode?
If I put the phone in bootloader mode and then run RUU, the RUU just comes back and says it can't talk to the phone.
FWIW, I did the same as you, as far as flashing the original (Cingular) ROM and trying to use the RUU that came with that update. It seems that those RUUs won't work with any other ROMs.
Thanks for any help!

Yep, that's the one! Been through it. As I mentioned above, the driver instructions in that thread are required when using Vista, but the RUU doesn't work.
Other than docnas here, everyone else has had the same problem as me. The Vista RUU comes back and complains that it's out of date.
I'd like to figure out what docnas did differently to get it to work. BTW, what version of Vista were you using? 32 or 64 bit? Mine is 64.
I'd also like to find out how it worked with the phone already in bootloader mode, since everyone says (and my experience has shown) that the phone needs to be booted and synced before the RUU will talk to the phone.
This may all be too late for me anyway. I'm giving my old Cingular 8125 to a friend, which is why I've been updating it. Unfortunately (or fortunately? ), once she has it, I'll only be working with my ATT 8525, which I can update and work with without any of the problems I've had with the Wizard.

Doesn't work on generic HTC PL ( 1.31.405.5 )
excellent!
yaaaaay! nice find mate
I accidently installed version 1.32 on my vodafone branded handset and after getting a gold card realised I couldn't downgrade to install the WWE rom and unbrand it.
I've just installed this on top of the new voda ROM and it worked perfectly fine - yaaaay! - that means it contains the new bootloader so be warned anyone looking to root etc.!
Radio is slightly improved by the looks of it - I'm getting better phone reception on o2 here in the uk and better wifi reception from my router at home
It seems slightly snappier too - that lag I used to get in the weather app has gone!
Will report back any bugs I come across - Only bug I found in 1.32 of vodaphone software was that the alarm doesnt always sound - got told off by my boss this morning for being late into work!!!!!!
Firmware Version: 2.1-update1
Baseband Version: 47.39.35.09U_7.08.35.21
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-5f084974 [email protected]#1
Build Number: 2.03.405.3 CL183823 release-kets
Software Number: 2.03.405.3
Browser Version: Webkit 3.1
Also noted it had most WWE languages when it asked me for setup
I can recommend this rom to everybody. It's fast as hell and some new htc widegts are available (eg notes, dice, coin). And of course pinch to zoom in google maps.
Nice ;D released today, so far so good.
If I update with this ROM using RUU will it wipe my phone or just updates the current system?
It will wipe everything.
I'm getting permanent Error 170/171 USB connection error. I'm using Windows 7 64bit. Someone experiencing the same issue?
I installed the latest HTC Sync and latest USB driver. When I start RUU procedure it reboots the phone and installs bootloader driver on Windows which needs a restart. I do not restart in order to not interrupting the RUU process. After about minute I got the error Error 171 USB connection error. Then I restart the phone and the computer and start the RUU process over again but the second time it cannot find that the phone is connected to USB... Very weird... Could it be because of Windows 7 incompatibility?

I'm using win7 x64 too, and I don't get that problem. try "adb devices" in cmd. If you get device number its should be okay. What I've done , and worked is made goldcard I've gone into bootloader (turn off phone, press and hold volume down and power on, holding vol down) then I opened the RUU with administrator permissions, and it worked. Try and tell us if it worked for you too.
But remember. YOU NEED to make a goldcard
Tutorial how to make a goldcard, follow the link:

Agree its fast and stable so far mate, but couldnt find the notes, dice + coin programs u mentioned.
Also using Windows 7 64bit here without any issues as I installed HTC Sync before I connected the device to my PC for anything.
I will get error 170. I need to try xp
I managed to fix the drivers issue, but now I get ERROR [131]: CUSTOMER ID. I have European HTC Legend and currently I'm using stock 1.31.405.5 ROM.
Which stock ROM is needed to be updated with WWE_2.03.405.3 ?

Hi can you please make a guide on how to update to this rom using a goldcard?
There are guides on this forum...
It worked perfectly using the GoldCard method. The ROM appears to be very snappy. Google Maps are version 4.1 with pinch-to-zoom. Great ROM so far!
What languages
Hi,
What languages is included in this release? Are the Scandinavian languages there?
I can choose from English, Czech, Polish and Russian. My phone is bought in Bulgaria. I assume that the ROM includes more languages (western european, scandinavian etc.) but I'm not sure.. it might be to do with handset's target market location...
Mine hangs in bootloader phase.
RUU updater reboots the phone then waits for bootloader. After a while stops with [170] "No phone connected error", Legend instead hangs to the Black Screen with HTC logo.
If I unplug the cable then i see the bootloader screen with RUU written in orange
Okay - I admit it's been a while since I programmed anything, but the desire to root my HTC Hero (Sprint) has brought me back into the game.
Thanks to the recent patch from HTC/Sprint (I have the 2.32.651.2 build#), I can't do a simple root using Androot or Unrevoked or z4root, etc.
Plus, since I have Win7(x64), I have serious difficulties reverting my phone back to a previous issue (the lovely USB error issue that comes up with the RUU flash). I tried replacing the driver and no luck.
So - I tried going the more fun, extended route, using SDK. Now - even though I have the latest version of JDK - the SDK installer is not recognizing JDK on my system. I've searched through the Android developers forum and even Google admits it shouldn't be that difficult and they'll work on addressing it in an upcoming release.
WTF?!
I'm starting to think I might have to venture into the bowels of my garage and dust off the old XP box... I'd rather avoid doing that, so any assistance y'all can provide is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Why not make a backup of everything, Wipe your whole system. Flash with a Rooted Stock ROM and restore backup. Then you have a good new phone...
ARGH! Can't anyone read?
Can't u hunt down old version of sdk?

There are plenty of sources to get a free copy of microsoft's virtual machine software. I want to say you can get VM 2007 for free directly from microsoft, but it's been a while since I've looked into it. Could do a VM and have it run XP, if you have a legit key there should be no problem.
no... school is for fools!!!
sorry bud about your luck... if it makes you feel any better, forced to use an old XP to update my dad's HTC Wizard from WM 5 to WM 6.5... that's not happening!
although, now that I think about it, this was the wizard forum's suggestion, use the XP Virutalization in Win7... it didn't work for me, but you could give it a shot!

Beat me to it, ugh, can't type as fast after my surgery. Yes, VM 2007 is free, you also have to download XP mode to make it emulate XP. There's a MS website that gives you the three steps, all free downloads. Just make sure your copy of Win is authentic... whoops on my part. The internet is amazing!
Right click on the RUU.exe and run as an adminstrator. Some have also run it in WinXP SP3 compatability mode. It's been a while but when the phone reboots and you get the blank screen followed by the USB error, disonnect the USB cable from the phone for about 5 seconds. Plug it back in and you should get the white screen with 3 androids at the bottom. Close the RUU and reun it again. It should recognize the phone and update.
I remember it being very frustrating but it did finally work. Good luck.
This isn't really the place for this, but these questions have already been covered, many many times..
Rooting instructions. I know this works on the latest official sprint, because I've done it successfully.
As far as not being able to RUU, some people have an issue running the RUU if they haven't ran HTC Sync. Try that and see if it works, and if not, follow this method.
HERCIMG-2.31.651.7.ZIP download it. it's the Sprint 2.31.651.7 executable but in signed zip format, for people who aren't running windows. Not sure who actually converted the executable to a signed zip, but props to you for helping those that can't run the regular RUU.
Rename the file to HERCIMG.zip and place it on the root of your SD card.
Power the phone off.
Press and hold your Volume Down button, and while still holding it press the power button to power your phone back up into HBoot mode.
HBoot should then automatically verify the zip file, and ask you if you would like
to flash it. Press your trackball to confirm the update (downgrade in this case),
or press your send button to cancel.
Once on 651.7 you would root as normal, but you should not have to RUU back to 651.7 just to root.

I know I had a version of Microsoft VM on Vista, but it seems under Windows 7 it will only work for the top end (professional/Enterprise/Ultimate)? Home premium and basic versions will not run VM.
Microsoft also (for those running pro/enterprise/ultimate) offers "Windows XP Mode" for free, if your system passes WGA. just google windows xp mode and it should pop up to the microsoft site that lets you download all of the required files.
I installed it on my laptop and desktop, and it runs fine on both. (Better on the laptop, actually).

This might help with your driver issues
So where is the ROM or ROM development?
@moxlon - I just have "Premium" and honestly not sure if I need to fork over another $200 to microsoft. Tried the HERCIMG, but it just says there is "no img or wrong img". Any ideas?
to the rest of you - thanks for tolerating my ineptitude.
Same issue
I had the same issues when I tried to run the RUU and revert. Basically I had to download the HTC sync first and let it do its thing with the drivers and such. Then I went back in and ran the RUU, it got to a point where it was stuck, I forget exactly which point, but you will know. I unplugged the phone from the computer and closed down the RUU and reran it and it went through. Its kinda weird, but will work. I am also running Windows 7 x64...
Try this. Runs on my Win7 machine and on the latest update. I know because I have done it several times. Extract to SDK tools folder, right click app (it will be red), and run as admin.
New SDK on Win7 x64
As big a pain as it can be. Simply install the 32 bit version of JDK and it'll find it just fine.

This is what I had to do, too. I'm running Win7 x64. Each time I would run the Sprint RUU 2.27.651.5, it would get stuck and error out on when the phone reboots to the bootloader. Once that happens, leave the phone alone, but unplug it from the computer, plug it back in and re-run the RUU. It works.
I've done that twice to my phone in the past week.
Wow, wish I found this before LOL
Just posted this a few min ago http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9964489#post9964489
Maybe change the title so people can find this that are having RUU issues? I only clicked because I was like conspiracy? I'd love to read this one LOL
I didn't search today because I didn't think there would be anything new from days ago when I was trying to run RUU since it's just the Hero lol
Wow forget the RUU, thanks for the zip file to flash! I found one before but was like eh.... doesn't sound as official.
Hello,
I've been all over Google and Android forums for days now and I cannot find the answer to a problem I have. I was flashing ROMs and kernals on my HTC One and now my device is stuck on the HTC logo start-up screen. I downloaded the latest RUU ( 5.05.651.2) direct from HTC, which comes in the form of a .exe. I'm S-ON so that's the only RUU that will work with my device.
Unfortunately, the RUU application will not run properly. It will load up the first screen and the loading bar will fill, but then that will disappear and nothing else will start. There's not even any error message. What's weird is that other RUU applications will run, it's just this one so far that won't. I downloaded 2013 C++ Redistributables from MIcrosoft because I read that installing them will allow the RUU to run. Without this RUU I don't think my HTC will get back to normal. Help?

Read and do this, you will need to install them all, restart your computer after you've installed them, do not run windows update, if possible also redownload the RUU to another location incase of a bad download, the below link worked for me.
