A little background here, i am yet to order the google chromecast as i have one question on my mind.
I live in a country where high speed Internet is both expensive and limited. Thus my monthly internet cap is 60 GB for 8Mbps or 1MBps speed.
So my qiestion is , when local content i.e content on my phone , tablet or pc is streamed via wifi to the chromecast , is this data consumed from my internet bandwidth. Say i stream a 2Gb movie , will 2 Gb be deducted from my internet limit as my wifi router was used ?
Sorry if this is a naive question , but I do need some clarification regarding this.
Thanks.

No!
If the content you are streaming is local then it streams local without eating Data.
The only data streaming local content will ever use is the few K it takes to load the player/reciever app into the CCast.

Ah , Thanks for the reply. Now I can go about getting the device. And yes , I was talking bout local media and not media from the cloud or online which I know will consume data.

I wanted to know can i mount my g1 to my ps3 or xbox 360 so that i can read videos and music from it?
I also wanted to know if i can tether with my xbox 360 or ps3. Like connect to the g1 network on the ps3? And play online with the 3g network.
Haha I'm not the only one. I can't help you with mounting the drive unfortunately but I set my G1 up to tether to my Wii. I have dialup at home and even EDGE is 10-20x as fast and I have WiFi set up just for file sharing and the likes. But you have to have an existing WiFi connection (unless the PS3 or XBOX360 can connect to Ad-Hoc, the Wii can't, if they can just use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=474470 ) and set up iptables properly, explains it in the post, it's simple enough and then set the gateway to the phone's IP and you must have a DNS server, I use openDNS just set the DNS server primary to 208.67.222.222 and if you have the option secondary to 208.67.220.220. I hope this helps, if it's not clear enough just let me know what you need help with and I will do my best to walk you through it.
EDIT: I'm a retard I left you without the most important link. Here is the link for the part where you have an existing WiFi router setup. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=444004

Lol. I live a mile too far into the country to get cable or DSL and about 60 miles from fiber in St. Louis. Funny how I have 5 bars EDGE all through the area and full AT&T 3G signal on my iPhone 15 miles away but I can't get cable. Oh well, that's what I pay for unlimited data for, and as soon as I get 3G i'll use my iPhone to tether instead of my G1.
to cannon you need your sd card formated to fat32 that should work. If not the only real way is to download linux to your ps3.
EDIT: i didn't read the topic and see you did was i bout to explain to you
genius based on what you just said i can help you get a connection to your wii and to everything in your house for tht matter anyone with a router i can help pm me and i walk you by the steps it take a minttue but it surely worth it. I once play (well set-up) my ps3 over a free dial-up connection (less then 56k) so i can surely help you.

Thanks for the offer but atm I got it set up but it is a PITA. I had to turn the router into just access point mode, turn off dhcp on the router, set the wii up with openDNS, and manage to set up iptables the hard way instead of just the AdHoc "tether start" command. If yours is any simpler please just let me know and I'll gladly listen lol.

i dont think you can mount the g1 to 360..
but on a ps3 you can.. i tried. i was able to transfer movies, music, and pics from ps3 to g1 and vice versa.
and you can wifi tether the g1 to the ps3 but 3g speeds is not fast enough.. plus what phone carriers dont tell u is that theres a data cap. so unlimited data is really not unlimited.
the g1 has a 10gig cap per month and the iphone has 5gig.
so playing online will quickly reach that cap and you will be slowed down to 50k for the remainder of the billing period.
i realise that when i try to upload some video files onto youtube from my phone, it says that i need a wifi connection to do so for large files. can't i use my 3G/HDPA connection?? this is ridiculous someone please help!
upz...anyone can help? =/
+1 I too am very interested in this, especially with a 4g wimax connection faster than some people's home DSL (not mine, but still)
Hi Everyone,
Can anyone help advise me?
I dont have a good ADSL connection here in Lincolnshire UK. Down load and upload speeds are low(2.5 d - 0.35 up).
But I do have a huge Cell Tower across the lane....I believe my Skype phone bars are high due to the tower. So my question is - can I stream LIVE content from the GAL S onto a wordpress blog or webpage through 3G?
I dont even have WiFi here.
Will 3G stream LIVE conent from my phone onto a wordpress blog for ex?
I dont want to buy a phone on contract and find out I cant stream onto the web.Is it best to wait for the Gal S 2?
Thanks Elton UK.
Your are mixing and misunderstanding a lot of things here (no offense).
Use wikipedia and search those terms to figure it out: 3G, Streaming over internet, wifi.

An application that streams over internet won't care if you use 3G or wifi.
Same goes for using the phone on your desktop computer as internet source.

Thanks -Elton .
Depending on the application you use, the developer could have implemented, a warning that you are using 3G, he could even block you from using his app over 3G but i don't see why he would do that.
is there a solution to the bandwidth hogging CC? i have 30mbps and my internet literally become unusable when someone is using chromecast to stream netflix/youtube. all my webpages dont show up, thats how bad it is. im also on xfinity and MUST use their router since i have phone and cable. the router wont let me change any settings.
In theory you could root it, SSH into it and limit the wifi datarate.
You shouldn't have that problem with streaming to the Chromecast. Even HD video streaming wouldn't take up a fraction of your internet bandwidth. For example a Netflix HD stream takes about 5.5 mbps. We routinely stream internet video to the Chromecast while downloading and browsing web pages on a 16 mbps connection, and there is no interruption to the video stream nor any delay in loading web pages.
Are the devices you are using for web browsing on WiFi? If so then WiFi bandwidth is more likely to be the problem. In that case you might need to move your xfinity router or invest in a better router of your own.

It is more likely your router that is the problem not the Streaming of the CCast or limits of the Internet connection.
Depending on your router you can usually give priority to various computers and port traffic.
Some call it Media priority, Others more properly call it QoS...
What you want to do is give port 80 traffic priority and that should solve your web page issues without affecting the stream in any significant way.
Unfortunately he has one of those locked-down routers provided by the ISP that doesn't let you access settings like QoS. But in any case, it's unlikely to be a priority problem in the router with the kind of usage he is talking about.
need to be able to tweak router settings, network mode, channel, channel width, security mode etc to get best perfromance.

All the other devices are running on wifi. Actually im the only one browsing the internet while cc is being used. Internet becomes unusable, webpage wont load. The router is closer to me than to the cc. I cannot invest in a different router because noone makes routers that use phone and cable together thats why im forced to use ****ty comcast router.

You don't have to replace the ISP provided router at all...(You would be hard pressed to find a router that did Phone anyway)
You could use any Wireless router you wanted but you would have to call your ISP and tell them you need them to put their provided router into Bridge mode (they will do it for you trust me you just have to be insistent). Then your current router would pass a Public IP to whatever router you connect to it and you would have complete control over your router and network settings.
Your problem certainly seems to be related to WiFi bandwidth. You could try moving your ISP's router - sometimes even a few feet can make a big difference in WiFi reception. But you can probably do a lot better using your own router.
You don't even have to put the ISP router in bridge mode. My current ISP gives me a combined modem+router where the router section is also locked down in certain ways, and they won't allow bridging. I just attach my own router as a device on the ISP router's LAN, put it in the DMZ so that all ports get passed through, and turn off the WiFi on the ISP router and use my own router's WiFi. You don't even have to disable the ISP router's WiFi really if you aren't using it.
Forgive me if I'm covering well-worn territory, I didn't see it posted, but I've also got a wicked head cold and my Google-fu is weak today.
The question I have is is it possible without the Full Internet permission to pass data to the internet via any Chromecast in WiFi range, or is full internet required just to connect to the Chromecast?
IE can an app with no internet access or restricted accesses using the Chromecast APIs/Google Play Services still connect to the first Chromecast it sees and then attempt to start streaming from http://hackyou.com&mediaid=myphonenumber&myemailaddress&whateverelseitstole
Leaving whoever runs that site with a log entry of your purloined info?
