I went to take a picture today and my camera instantly went to the front facing camera. The option to switch to the rear camera was missing. I click on the icon for panorama and I get a message that says " Sorry, no back facing camera available". I have tried everything I can think of including:
Rebooting the phone.
Deleting data and cache
Uninstalling camera updates
Factory Reset
Installing a different Rom.
Nothing has worked. Any other ideas before I contact Support?
I have this problem with two different phones...... On one I managed to repair is temporarily through a panicked series of resets etc. The other I had to RMA.

I had this problem with my Nexus 5. rear camera would stop working. One thing to try is boot to safe mode and see if it works. Safe mode disables any 3rd party apps that can cause the camera to crash. If it works, it could be an app. For me, sometimes in safe mode it wouldnt work either. I contacted Google, went through a few steps and they sent me out a replacement device.
the exact thing happens to me too

Hello ,
Just bought 3 days ago my xperia Z and yesterday i realised that the front camera isnt working at all. when i press the front camera button its says "unfortunately camera has stopped " and returns to home menu. other times there isnt a front camera button to press at all! and from the camera options i dont have "front camera , front video" choice. When i run diagnostics for the front camera its total black and i cant press the button for the test.
i guess its a hardware issue? Has anyone had a similar problem? I am on 4.2.2 and 10.3.A.0.423

Perform a repair using SUS to rule out any software issues. If the problem persists, then it is most likely a hardware issue.
Backup your SD Card & other data prior to using SUS because it will erase all data on the phone.

I would suggest you download a different app to take pictures and see if works with the front camera
I suggest maybe Camera MX
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.magix.camera_mx
if it doesn't work then its hardware and best suggestion is to take it back for a replacement
If it does work then its a software issue, possibly a small bug with the sony camera app
I had something similar and had it reflashed with the original firmware directly from sony by a Guru/Tech guy at the store I got my phone.
Let me know if that helps ok.

I'd recommend that you contact Sony support instead of trying to do something on your own, which might just end up worsening your problem.

Sounds like a hardware issue especially since the front camera did not work with a different app. take your phone back and exchange for new one before that option disappears.

Hey guys,
Recently I had opened up my phone to replace a cracked screen. The screen and all other functions work properly but the rear camera seems to be giving an error message, stating, "camera not available".
I tried resetting the phone but this problem did not get solved. The front camera used to work before the reset but now even that is gone.
I even downloaded a third party app but back camera still not working( front camera is available in third party app.
What could have gone wrong. Could this have screwed up the software, if so what should I do to repair it?
Or have I possibly not connected the camera properly? Or have I totally damaged it some how?
Please help

Hi mate,
it could be a problem either with the hardware or with software. "camera not available" sounds like you didn´t connect the camera properly and the software could not find it.
Check it, if the camera is really connected.
Otherwise I personally think, it was not the best idea to reset the phone - a normal reboot should be enough.
As you tried a third party app, and the front camera worked, it must be a software problem. What I would do:
1) Check the connection of the camera, if it´s ok. -
2) Reflash the system and reboot it normally.
Good luck! :fingers-crossed:
Ok, the rear camera doesn't open. I can't switch to it in the camera app or snapchat etc. Flash doesn't work either, and if I do the "V" gesture for flash when the phone is locked, it restarts. I have:
* Cleared cache/data
* Disabled and re-enabled the app.
* Dirty flashed OOS 4.1.7 multiple times and have also flashed Franko's Kernel which I normally use (currently running stock kernel though).
* Google camera app multiple times. (had this before too, then I deleted it after this camera problem arose)
Not sure if relevant but TWRP has been giving me some error I haven't been able to fix for some time, and can't delete the file that it says it can't open (through twrp itself or cmd+adb) . Relevant SS attached.
Thanks.
You may want to try to flash the phone using the unbrick tutorial. Make sure you have a backup of internal memory
Hmm, I haven't tried that. I just did a clean install with no success. I deleted everything except USB OTG from TWRP. This has become much harder to fix than it should be . I didn't even do anything to set it off, I was in snapchat and took a pic and then it stopped and the rear camera/flash haven't worked since.
Just to update, I just tried a clean install of NLOS Lineage OS and the rear camera/flash still didn't work. Also, if I try to take any type of video with front camera the phone says "Low memory, adjust the picture resolution or delete some files" even though there's only 3.3 GB of space used.
Also, after a clean flash and wipe of everything the error reported by TWRP no longer exists. So that wasn't what was causing the problem.
Just used the unbrick tutorial. It worked perfectly however the problem still persists and remains unchanged. Anyone have any other ideas?
After some deep diving through forums I decided to use the phone's inbuilt hardware tests, in particular *#808#, as the camera test given by dialing *#*#34971539#*#* doesn't work. Firstly, the flash works through the hardware test (although quick settings still doesn't). The "foolproof camera test" gives BackCamera PASS and FrontCamera Fail. This makes sense as when I go to the individual tests the "backcamera" shows the front camera image, while the "frontcamera" just says "cannot open camera". The PDAF/Cam_EEPROM info test says "FAIL Qualcomm", which I believe is the camera firmware not working. The storage test says "sdcard is unavailable" which I assume is why the camera isn't allowing me to record any video through the selfie camera and says "Low memory".
In summary, how do I fix the camera firmware problem and the sd card error?
RMA your phone, hardware fault.
Ok Thanks.
So there is no way to update/fix the firmware problem?

No.

Im having the same problem on my one plus 3...did u find any solutions??? if yes plz lemme know.
I haven't found a solution.i replaced both The front and back camera and even played with old/new cameras in different configuration (old front + new back / new front+old back / no front + new or old back and so on) varying the result from "Back camera pass/Front camera fail to both Fail ) .the funny thing Is that if you just remove back camera and do the diagnostic menu *#808# > foolproof camera test it still says back camera pass
I have the same problem... And my camera before of this beta worked awesome... Beta 24 **** our phones...
Experiencing the same problem with the front (away) facing camera and the flashlight.
Same Problem for me since the latest official Beta. Ich tried resetting and reflashing the Phone with the last official stable rom. Did not help.
I think I solved this. I let the phone cool down then i powered it off. I let it cool down a bit again and then booted it back up. The camera and FL work.
It seems that this happends when the phone gets heated, at least in my case.
I have the same problem, camera was working fine yesterday. Foolproof camera test shows front camera fail. But the front camera works
Hi everyone
Please anyone can help on my issue of Front Camera not working.
whenever i try to change my camera to front one it just goes black and without any error message it just crashes. i have done the below methods but none of them is working. No new apps have been installed also.
1) soft reset
2) hard reset
3) safe mode check
4) cleared the cache and data for camera app
5) tapped near the front camera for lose connection if
6) smart stay is turned off
7) *#0*#. checked and its working in there
Pleasecould anyone help or suggest what to do.
Thanks
Chirag
Hello,
since my camera app is not working, same with apps that use the camera.
The problem is when i'm on the main camera i get a black screen (an absolute black, like if there is no signal) and the shooting button is not working. The camera works fine for selfies instead but when i switch to the rear cam the app freezes. I tryed everything from clearing data/cache, unistall and reupdate the app, nothing works even after the january update.
So whats the solution? Google team can make it to fix or do you think Is an hardware problem and i have to ask for a new unit?
It definitely looks like a hardware failure. The only thing you can try is to factory reset the phone if it still doesn't help - place a warranty claim.
