Block Verizon/OTA Update? - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

Not sure if wrong forum section but was wondering if there was a way to block all Verizon updates without root. I keep getting notifications to install the latest update (the one that gives Advanced Calling 1.0) but I don't want to install it in case it causes issues. Is there a way to remove/block this update feature without root?

You can disable all the Verizon's apps. In the app section in settings I don't get any notifications.

Dont think you understood my question mdcow. I wasnt talking about stopping Verizon app updates like Navigator, Visual Voicemail, Text App, etc. I was talking about the system firmware updates

Not without root unfortunately. You can only keep declining the install and that's it but eventually your phone will bend to big red's will when you're not paying attention

I've never gotten those update notifications so my disabling a lot of stuff from Verizon and moto must of prevented something.

Just curious then what is your current firmware version? Want to see if you unknowingly updated already or if your update was actually blocked

221.44.8 if it updated it did it without me knowing. I'm getting rid of this phone anyway. Came from insurance cause they didn't have any razr maxx in Stock. I really don't like it.

Okay it sounds like it didn't update as your firmware version matches as one without the update Advanced Calling feature. Still curious to know what you disabled so I could get rid of my notification too

I think this newer ota app came from the Turbo, it stops it on the ultras. Check the md5 against yours. Pull it with Super Manager, apk manager, bAPK. Use Explorer free to read the md5.
I posted the md5 on my Op.

I still have the old Maxx. I found that installing a newer moto ota app (my link) I could stop the ota. I have yet to determine which new moto system dump I got it from. If not from the Turbo then it may stop it too.
Md5 is unique to any app. I posted it for the unknown app.

When you boot your phone, wait until the download notification comes up then go into settings and force stop MotorolaOTA. It'll cancel the download and it won't try again until you reboot.

Try this blocking method out, I believe it will work for the Turbo. It's easier than using the script. http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294

thanks MisterXTC. The tool seems to work like a charm, esp with the search function.
One question: the OTA is already downloaded on my phone and i keep getting a notification to install it but I have been been 'delaying' the install. When I block the "MotoralOTA" but then reboot the phone the phone, the notification comes back. Is there a way to permanently block the OTA or will I have to block it each time the phone restarts?

Try entering recovery mode and wipe the cache. That will delete the downloaded update file. As for permanently blocking the OTA it should stay blocked until you factory reset. It's probable nagging you because of the downloaded update file. You might have to re-block the OTA after clearing cache, I'm not positive. You might need to enter your app manager and manually stop the OTA, try that first.

I'm rooted but without CWM (still have stock recovery). Can I simply defrost (freezing is all I've done) and get the update? Or do I have to do a hard reset to get back to full stock?
If hard reset to stock is required, any tips or techniques that you use to save time to get back to where you were? Thx.
Well I am updated and while I notice that all the extra Verizon apps are gone here is what I see...
1. Kindle, bing, slacker, tunewiki, and Verizon tones are all still installed and no option to remove them.
2, After I installed a dozen apps of my own, I still have 1gig of app space available.
3. The phone is remarkable faster and smoother.

Rooted should be ok, you may likely lose your root. It does not install with clockwork. I used lgnpst and imaged my phone, I then did a factory reset, felt like starting from scratch.
Verizon only removed a handful of apps. I am not sure it was worth the trouble. I have to root again so I can go back in and freeze or uninstall all the crap they left.
Id say in the de-bloat department they were a epic fail.

yeah I returned my phone to stock with the lg tool and tot file, then did a factory reset, updated, rooted again, used titanium back up to uninstall the rest of the bloat Verizon missed.
While I do not know if the update breaks root or not, you can use the root tool in the dev section (esteem root v2) to root your phone. It works like a charm.
So was anything else updated? Trying to decide if it's worth my time to bother with. I am already running a zv9 that I seriously debloated and tweaked to where it's useable.

It will rebloat your phone. While they did patch some things, my phone did actually run smoother. I did have to root it again and un-install all the bloat they left, vzw tones, navigator, city id, kindle, slacker, etc...
No better battery life and not much of a performance increase. Id wait if you are happy.
keeps trying to update
I was planning on rooting & putting BrokenOut ROM on my revo when my contract ended. Then this OTA update came out, and I was worried that it would prevent that. So, I rooted the phone and put CWM recovery on and did a backup. As expected, the OTA update failed.
But, it hasn't given up. It tries and tries, about once a day. I hear my phone chirp, and it has rebooted and drained the battery, and shows at various times either the "update failed" screen, or the "updating in 2 minutes" screen, or recovery. When I get prompted to run the update, I defer it - but the deferal time doesn't correspond to when the reboot happens.
It's possible that the rooting and recovery are behind the problem, and not the update - but I suspect the update has something to do with it.
So, what I'd like to know is:
1) if I get the update, can I still use ROM Manager to change the recovery back to CWM, and still be able to flash BO on it?
2) to get the update, is it safe to just use ROM Manager to put the stock recovery on it, then run the update? I haven't done any debloating or other rooty stuff not mentioned above. I'd rather not lose data by reset, tot, etc.
3) can I fix my problem without getting the update? Maybe one of the options on the "update failed" screen? I'm not sure if I've selected only "OK" or only "Cancel" so far - or what those are supposed to mean.
4) do the security updates make zvb better than BO? (Does anyone here no what the security updates are?)
Thanks...
Broken out is based off of V9, so unless there are updates to the radio, you will most likely over-write most, if not all, of the updates.
As posted earlier, someone has rooted and installed cwm. But, someone wants to post up the update (you can rip it from the /data/local/tmp directory, iirc) I will try my best to update BO. Also, if someone can do a backup of the new update and post it up, (not the blob crap, the other one ) I'll rip the kernel and post a flashable zip. Maybe they did fix something. We will see.

Yeah, I figured current BO would undo zvb, that's why I was wondering which I should go with. The update downloaded several times, but I don't see anything in /data/local/tmp. Don't know if the download failed or just didn't persist. It hasn't tried to update for the last 30 hours or so. I'm not eager to encourage it at the moment.
I see that haxcid re-rooted, but nothing about re-cwm-ing.

I rebooted my phone, and once again it prompted me to install the update. I selected "defer" and then checked settings / about phone / software update / status which says "Package downloaded successfully".
However, /data/local/tmp is still an empty directory, according to ES File Explorer.
That's where the file was stored for v7, v8, and v9. Maybe they changed it for this update. IDK. I'll look into it. No worries. It's all good.
I think it gets downloaded to /cache/fota, but deleted once the process finishes failing. I will try to trigger it again and copy it before the phone reboots. I was not given the defer option this time.

Blocking update?

Just received my Moto X AT&T shipped from Costco, system version is 139.9.51.ghost_ATT.en.US -so would appear I can root? (and then hopefully take the update without losing root? I recall seeing a thread, hopefully for the version I have)
Can the update be "pushed" onto the device without my accepting it, as to whether I would need to root (if I wanted to root) quickly to block it?
Thanks

no but you will get continual pop ups unless you the phone then disable motorola ota 1.0 and updater.apk (i think just updater.apk will suffice) with Titanium back up.

not sure if it downloads it automatically or not (i don't think it does but it may). Even if it does download automatically it won't update it unless you click ok when it prompts you. I would root and disable OTiA until you figure out what you are going to do about it.

looks like it's either with PwnMyMoto, or Motoroot, appears the first is better? Looks like both are done with ADB which was a bit difficult, have only used it once, used it to remove safestrap from the SGS4 I had so I could return it

unable to apply Android 5.1 OTA (not rooted)

Hi, my Nexus is on Android 5.0.1 (LRX22C). I haven't rooted or unlocked the bootloader; everything is totally stock. But I'm unable to successfully install the Android 5.1 OTA update. My phone downloads it, verifies it, then reboots to begin the installation process. After working on the update for a while, I see an error message (with an android on its back and a red "X"). The phone stays on that screen for a while, then eventually reboots without having installed the update. I've tried clearing cache, and it doesn't help. Anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, I've sideloaded before with other devices, but I'd like not to have deal with wiping my phone to unlock the bootloader right now. I'd thought that by not rooting or messing with the bootloader, I'd keep things simple and be able to easily apply OTA updates. So I'm very frustrating that this isn't working. Any idea why this might be happening?
Thanks!

No, you do not need to wipe or unlock to sideload. Post #3 in the thread I linked, simple instructions on sideloading.
As for why this is happening, anyone's guess but it could, somehow, have something to do with your device having the T-Mobile Sim and being from Google play.

OK, I'll give it a shot. Thanks! Any idea which OTA I want? I'm guessing it's LMY47M, since I'm on a T-Mobile SIM, even though the device was bought from Google? Need I worry that that build isn't up on Google's "Factory Images for Nexus Devices" page? And is there any risk that installing an update this way will make it more complicated to get OTA updates in the future? (I was hoping that by doing things the official way this time, I could avoid having to monkey around with stuff like this.)
Thanks!

Yes, you want the LRX22C to LMY47M OTA as I said before. No, you don't need to worry about it not being on the images page. Also a no for it affecting your ability to get OTA's in the future. On a Nexus, this is pretty much as official as getting the OTA natively.
OK, an update: got an error installing the update any way I tried, even after a factory reset. Called Google support, and they're replacing the phone for me.

I actually used the method in that thread to install Google Framework/Play Store. This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/installing-google-framework-playstore-t3216122
I came across the tutorial video for it on youtube before I came across your post in this thread that linked to the Google Framework/Play Store install thread. The reason I came across this thread was because I was also searching for a way to disable OTA updates, however, I now noticed that in the Google Framework/Play Store install thread there's a note made by you which states that the install bat now includes blocking OTA updates as of 02 Nov 2015. I did follow this method after that date, so does this mean that I no longer need to use adb commands to disable OTA updates? I was going to use the method found in this thread, which you also linked to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/disable-ota-sdcard-write-access-t3220430 but I'm now assuming that I don't need to. Could you please tell me if my thinking would be correct on this? Thanks very much in advance.

Well the batch file has several options, if you've selected the 3rd one (block OTA updates from Amazon) on the menu and not used the 4th one then you have blocked them. If you've only used the 2nd option (Install Google Play store and remove ads from lock screen) then they aren't blocked.
Option 3 is still using adb commands to block the ota apks, the only difference is the batch file is 'automating' them so you don't have to type em in by hand. You just have to select 3 like Pond-life said above. And for the love of god don't anyone select option 4 !

Thanks guys! And is it easy to re-enable OTA updates in the future if I want to?
I haven't rooted it I only used the option to install play store and disable ads, but I've read people saying the latest update causes the play store to stop working or something?

When I used that batch file disabling ota was a selectable option. Assuming you did you should be safe. You can check by turning off WiFi and going to settings-device options-system updates. If you click system updates and get The requested action is not permitted then you should be OK. Of course you can also go the manual adb route as well. If updates are already blocked then you'll just get an error from adb (to the best of my recollection). Or run the batch file again and select the "Block ota" option again if you are not sure if you did before.
Edit: actually I was wrong, if you "pm hide" a package that's already hidden it just says "new status:hidden" again. Not sure that there is a way to tell if a package is hidden since there is no "pm list packages -h" command.

What happens if I use option 4 (unblock OTA updates)? Wouldn't that work aswell?
Does that mean the latest updates really can cause problems even if I just installed the playstore and didn't actually root it?

Depends on the update, looks like google framework works with 5.1.1, if installed as a user app.
but future updates could be different

I froze the 3 ota files with TiBu. When I go to settings>device options>system updates, it forces closes back out the the device options screen. Should I be good NOT to get the update?

back story
i thought i had time. and was waiting for the play store to recognize my device before i ordered Titanium Backup Pro
to freeze apps. and OTA
the play store says "You don't have any devices" when i try to login in to the play store on my computer
but i can access the play store from the play store app on my fire just fine
i read a post that said it could take up to 2+ hours for the play store to recognize the fire tablet, when logging in with a computer
so i was waiting
Won't stopping a update in progress mess up the tablet possibly brick, 5.0.1 is needed for gplay its saying no devices because 5.0.0 gplay doesn't work on it

Just realised you've connected to the internet before blocking otas the guide clearly says to not connect to the internet so it can't download them, Google play on 5.0.0 can't check licences also so apps like launchers won't activate the plus features

The splash screen that says the latest update is being installed is just Amazon's version of the Android dialog that says Android is upgrading, which you'll get any time you wipe cache. In other words, if you're already on 5.0.1 and have been messing around with it (e.g. rooting it) it's not unusual to see the "latest update" screen on reboot as the cache gets rebuilt.

dont know but i am already on 5.0.1 or maybe it's 5.0.1.1
this is something new and just released
stopping the update, should not brick it
if it does i could always put the update file back
once someone tells me how to remove it or stop the update process

oh ya i wiped the cash yesterday and did a factory reset
then rooted it
you think thats why today i see the update ?
or is it something new ?
no that cant be it i remember it rebuilding the cash yesterday
so this is something new
probably to fix the root hole we found
because if we root it we dont have to see their adds
or use their programs like "PRIME"
and they dont make money
thats why i am scared of this update
because it's in their best interest to stop root and boot-loaders
If you're on 5.0.1 then you're on the latest and you're not receiving an update.
I have got same problem
I originally have stopped the OTA through adb shell
but then I still got the update
not sure why this happens...

it is also possible ANY update of ANY kind takes away root

More than likely it isn't an ota, I had this happen a few times messing with system using root apps, it's just rebuilding cache like users suggested, also when I rooted the device I had that come up before, it's fine.
Just make sure the ota services are disabled/hide/removed.
You can install all the updates available for this device, you won't lose root. Not yet at least
Thank you all for your kind replies

i used this app to check for root
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck&hl=en
Plus after install of the update i lost superuser
dead give away right there, but i wanted to make sure anyway
so i used that app
