it can, depending on what apps you use on your phone, or what kinds of services you use. it can be less, and it can be much more as well.

Do you use high accuracy location or a lot of google now?

Yes it's on high accuracy. It's the way the phone came set up. If it's normal then I'm not gonna worry. I don't use Google Now a lot but maybe moderately. It's only on it's 3rd charge cycle. T-Mobile device running on Verizon. I unplugged it last night at 10:45 pm and it's now almost 6:30 pm. With about 2:55 minutes of on screen time.

That's why then, high accuracy location kills your battery which would also explain why google search is up there with usage as well. Google now search is using the location to suggest things even if you aren't looking at it. If you change the location to battery saver it won't be as accurate but it will save you battery as its name suggests.

OK I'll take that into consideration. How about using GPS only? Battery saving us off by quite a bit. Will battery saving work well with navigation?

For navigating I would use high accuracy which google maps will prompt you to do anyway. (I plug my phone in for long trips) I normally keel my location off because I don't need it unless I'm traveling. I believe that the device sensor (GPS only) uses more than the battery saving mode. I'm not 100% sure but it seemed to the last time I used that setting.

OK Pilz thanks for the heads up. This is my 1st Nexus device and it didn't seem to make too much difference with my note 3. I know that Lollipop is still in the beginning stages and they're still trying to iron out some bugs. It's an awesome device otherwise and will be worth it in the end. It sucks I had to go the T-Mobile route. I tried to make their service work but they just have nowhere near the coverage Verizon has and I didn't feel like waiting till it arrived on their network.

XDA SuperPower...

Here is an app that is free on the market that will greatly reduce the strain on your battery as it runs in the background. It easily added an additional 2 hours for me to the battery life. Its called "SuperPower". If you search the market for XDA Super Power, it will come up. Run it the first time and let it set itself up, and grant it root privlidges.
DO NOT MESS WITH THE SETTINGS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, BECAUSE YOU MAY SOFTBRICK IT AND HAVE TO DO A FACTORY RESET.
It will not work properly if your device is not rooted.
Again this is free app, with a nag-screen that occasionally come up that you can click no and it goes away. Or, if you like the work that XDA did and want to pay for the app you can as well through that nag-screen like I did and it will get rid of the nag and you get full support and updates. And the money goes toward offsetting the cost of XDA forums.

Thanks for the tips.
Unfortunately, I tried the beta version and seems it did not get an update since Nov last year. And almost no one is maintaining it. (Maybe if I purchase the full version there will be more maintainence?)

Sprint Navigator is now TeleNav GPS navigator!

You can point your mobile browser here and get the upgrade!
My GPS actually locked faster in my house with the new upgrade with the new TeleNav!
Will give this a try. thanks for sharing...

Wow! Great find! How come it (SprintNav) is not automatically updated to Telenav? The new UI is great and it sees I might be using this instead of Google Maps now.

Awesome, thanks OP. I was meaning to load SN back on after ACS Frozen but hadn't gotten around to it yet, now I don't need to. The old one doesn't even have to be installed for it to "upgrade"
The new traffic avoidance in google nav still needs some work, unless I just don't know how to use it.
Sent from my ACS frozen Epic
I have no idea why it is not automatically updated, a friend of mine pointed me to the update link.
Thanks for the heads up! Like others, I would never have known about this otherwise!
Sprint nav has always been my nav of choice but this is significantly better. Great find!

Wow, nice ui much better.

It appears to run a service all the time: "ResourcePreLoaderService"?
I hate when apps do that. I don't want to waste resources on app while I'm not running it. I'll probably uninstall it for that very reason.
Awesome! Really fast! Hope it keeps satellite lock better than Sprint Nav did in. EB13.

I don't think the premium offers much in the way of a premium offering. I don't use it enough to justify the price of it.

It seems to only run that service when it is running. I shut it down in task mngr after I closed it and I can't find that service. Correct me if I am wrong.
I tried it again it took me like 5 force closes to fully stop it. Yeah, that kinda sucks.
Hmmm....in diagnostics it still shows 10% for GPS and now 0 satellites when Sprint Nav showed 1. Anyone try this on a trip yet? Does it hold GPS lock? Sprint Nav drops constantly since EB13 upgrade.

In running services "ResourcePreLoaderService" for telnav most certainly runs constant and restarts its self if force stopped

GPS app that doesn't need data connection for Note?

Hi all,
Can anyone suggest some GPS app that's good for our Galaxy Note and better if without relying on data connection?
(possibly someone from Asia as i understood that Europe/US might have other GPS apps? )
First of all, I'm on STAXX PA 1.7 ICS with Anidroid Kernel v1.0.
I've tried a few, but not all that good:
1. Waze - free, quite nice, but require data connection, when get to somewhere without signal...
2. Sygic - free for 14 days, nice interface, doesn't require data connection, but can't find most location?!?! :silly:
3. Papago X5 - paid, quite accurate, doesn't require data connection, but doesn't support our Note resolution
4. Papago M9 - paid, quite accurate, doesn't require data connection, suppose to be Note-compatible, but not sure why, mine is not showing full screen. due to custom rom?
Any others that I can try?
*now i started to miss my days with my HTC Tytn 2 with Garmin...*

Gps can locate your position without using data But how do you suggest it can load your map without data?? Have you been watching harry potter too much?
Navfree World (hxxps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navfree.android.OSM.ALL&hl=en) works quite well. It does require a fairly hefty download (200-500mb) to get the maps for your country in the first place, but once the maps are downloaded, a data connection is no longer required.
The only "problem" is that it uses OpenStreetMaps, which while decent, doesn't have the detail that many of the commercial satnav offerings have.
Replace the xx in the URL above with tt, the forum won't let me post links yet.
Cheers,
cgkanchi
Sygic works completely without a data connection. Highly recommended.

Open Google Maps.
Open Menu and Select Make Available Offline.
Now Select the area or add City you want to make available offline.
Click OK. (It will download the Area you selected on your device)
Done. Cheers!!!
Hope it helps...
Some areas are not available for offline map download in Google maps.
You could try NDrive. Paid apps, download able offline maps. Support the note screen size if I remembered correctly.

I'm using Sygic for the past two years now. Using it since the days of my good' old Wave 2 !! It is pretty much accurate in India. It shows even the smallest of locations. And gets a lock fast. :good: Uses Sygic Downloader to download maps(One time) so it's pretty much an offline navigation.

@OP
Above shown method will reduce(if you using navigation in area of downloaded map hardly it uses few KB) data consumption.
Google map still needs active data connection to run navigation. can't use as true offline navigation
Sygic is best from i tried, Sygic/Navigon/Ndrive 1-2 more from market.
Still google is the best if you have data connection.

Never knew about that, thanks for the heads up...but sadly Google navigation doesn't work properly outside US...
Use Mod version of google navigation that is world navigation activated, works anywhere.

I sucessfully tested osmand. It's a nice frontend to OSM maps with offline routing. The UI could use some polishing but overall impression is positive.
If allows up to 16 map downloads (countrywide) free.

Try Be-On-Road
Its in the app store. I tried a bunch of free and trial programs for offline nav on my Samsung N7000. This seemed to be the best - by far. For the entire USA, the cost for perpetual app and maps (update once per year) was $25. A decent price, I think. Slightly odd UI but easy to get used to via their 7-day trial. Not perfect. But I found a bug, reported it, got fast response, and a fix from the developer who will include it in the next release. Gotta like that. Wish it could navigate better using entries in the contacts list but it kinda works (if you have a data connection). Well worth checking out.

The trick is to enter your destination before you leave while you have Internet. Google navigation works fine with offline maps after that.
Within few minutes it will end with msg 'data connection lost'

Maps wake locks are back=(

Does anyone know what I can turn off on maps location settings so that Google Now will still tell me where I am and bring up the same cards (i.e. The weather in the address I'm in, how long it will take to get back home, places to check in, etc.)?

Pretty much, yes. Also if you turn off everything under Location, you will not have to worry about that much anymore. There are ways to completely freeze or remove Google Now from your device, just use Google and you'll find many articles regarding this.

I think the app IFTT (If This Then That) has a recipe to do this. I've installed the app but haven't had the time to me around with it too much yet.
Yes it does, but the success rate is less than 50% for me for some reason. I would like to think sometime soon there will be a way to do this without the Internet.
