Extended warranty or support - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Folks
I'm not good with my phones and Verizon corporate support has been quite lenient with me in replacing broken phones (sometimes with cracks on the glass too)
Is there any coverage that Google play store or Motorola store offer that would cover the phone in case of damage? Kind of like insurance. Looking forward to next wed
Thanks

Moto care just go on their site

Do you know how much it costs and if it's 1yr, 2 yr or 3 yrs. I haven't bought one yet as the 64gb isn't available
Does google offer something similar?
Thx

google offers just the factory replacement, but they do let buyers get a free "get out of jail card". meaning, only one time they will replace your n6 or n5 for any kind of damage, even if you break it yourself. if you bought it through the play store.

I didn't see anything documented on that get out of jail - is that just an informal policy or you have a link I can read up on?
Thx

if you search, you can find evidence of this. here is an article, about a nexus 5 exchange, which google themselves said that they will include the nexus 6 as well, for a one time exchange for any reason http://www.starkinsider.com/2014/09/google-replacing-nexus-5-phones-warranty.html oh, and another one http://techcrunch.com/2014/09/03/ye...-replace-your-nexus-5-if-you-bust-the-screen/
i think its an informal policy, not written anywhere. i broke my screen on my n5, but bought it through tmobile. i tried to get google to replace it, and they about did, until they found out i bought it through tmobile, and not the play store.
---------- Post added at 05:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:43 PM ----------
from the second article i linked..
Here’s the criteria, as explained to us by Google Play support:
The phone must have been purchased through the Google Play store. So buying a broken Nexus 5 off Craigslist probably won’t work.
It’s a one-time exception.
You must be within one year of the purchase date.
The phone you get will be a refurb.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the new “exception,” but was quick to reaffirm that, “this special exception is available in the U.S. only at this time.”

280 nexus 4's on ebay and counting...

One of those could have been mine. Instead, some f&$king a#$%ole decided they would turn a quick buck and resell it on ebay/craigslist for more. So many people weren't able to get in on this because the first wave of devices sold out so quickly. Now they're forced to either wait, or pay a premium. Am I the only one that finds that infuriating?
To top it off, T-mobile is selling the phone claiming that the MSRP is $499. How is the MSRP $499 when google sells it for $350?!
I'm unbelievably frustrated today!
I wouldn't buy one from there on principle. Also if it has any faults your screwed.

Selling products for more than they're worth when they're in short supply is called gouging, not capitalism.
I hope someone Buys It, tell eBay seller sent you rocks, send rocks to seller, get refund, keep free nexus 4
Then you'll never see them do this again
To me this was the one thing Google should have prevented, at least initially. No one should have been able to order more than 1 or 2 in the 1st wave. I know they did this when the GN came out....was like a limit of 5 per person I think. There certainly shouldnt have been anyone allowed to purchase 200+ on initial launch.
It didn't seem like Google even had 200 in stock

I agree. I don't believe anyone could have ordered 200...but it's possible I suppose. All I wanted was one. It's just frustrating seeing so many for sale at such a huge premium on ebay...it's just greedy.

T-mo is selling it at MSRP because that's the device cost from LG
Google is subsidizing it on the Play Store.
People do that all the time at launches, Google mistake was allowing more than one device to be bought per person. Others are selling it because the mess that happened and they ordered more than one by accident.
After eBay fees etc Dont think they will make much 16 gig is like 400 after taxes shipping even if they sell it for 500 they'll make 50 bucks? Meh

Not that much
200 isn't that much considering how many were sold to legitimate users. I think google would have done better with a strict limit of 2 per order but they went with a higher number.
As an aside I remember when the ps3 came out and resellers got pwnd because there were plenty of supplies.
One of them has 24 bids at $605! Damn!

The service at Sprint retail stores sure has gone down hill

I wasn't eligible for a upgrade so I had no problem paying for retail for my SG4. Went to a Sprint store and told the rep I wanted to by the SG4, I'm not eligible for a upgrade and had no problem paying the retail price.
He straight up told me he couldn't sell me the phone, because the store would lose money on it! I asked him to repeat that and asked to talk to the store manager and he said that policy is set by the store manager.
So I left, went to my car and called Sprint corporate. They suggested I call the store manager ask for their name and their regional manager's contact info. I did and of course that changed the store manager's tune, she said the rep was new and wasn't properly trained blah blah blah.
And sold me the phone. Thankfully I didn't get crap or have any issues activating with my Sero plan.
But it really annoys me how bad the customer service in Sprint stores have become. It appears they are too concerned about profit; activating new contracts, selling additional services, and getting you to buy over priced accessories, than actually caring about existing customers that don't fit their own needs.

How the hell are they losing money selling a device full price at a huge markup
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda premium
I asked the store manager that and she said that while she wasn't accusing me directly, it could be shady that I was buying the phone like that and could be doing it only to return it a few days later or to try and sell it elsewhere for a profit.
The original rep's response was he couldn't make any profit on me... since he wouldn't get the same "quota" for activating a new line.
It shouldn't matter what you want to do with it. Especially if you are activating in store, your chance to make a profit drops. Plus, the Sprint version has not fallen into a shortage, and every one I've seen on craigslist is just retail cost. I'd find another store, don't give them your money
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda premium
I'm guessing that it's a commission issue driving this. Sprint makes money on contracts and selling a phone not attached to a contract probably doesn't count as a "sale" to the store.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 2
It would be interesting to know if this was a true Sprint owned store or one of their subcontractors that appear to be Sprint stores.
I have had this happen to me twice, once when buying the One at one sprint location and a gs4 at another location. Sprint is in the business of selling services and they use phones to accomplish that. Most of their profit is in contract sales not phone sales. I highly doubt that sprint or any other carrier for that matter is making any money by selling a phone at regular price without selling the services attached to it. Also for those that think there is a huge mark up on phones, I really don't think there is. Now there may be a huge mark up from the OEM to the carrier(The OEM's have no other way of making money other than actual phone sales) but it can't be that much if any from the carrier to the customer. The mark up would come in the form of what you pay for monthly services, thats why they can sell a phone at a loss if you sign a two year agreement.
Best Buy sells most cell phones for 150$ more outright. $599 at sprint vs $749 at best buy. Sprint probably is at a slight lost selling it at $599. I think it's kind of like Microsoft and Sony do with their XBOX and PLAYSTATION. They sell the console at a loss but make up for it in games. For Sprint it would be the service.
This happened to my girlfriend when she went to buy the htc one outright and she wasn't up for an upgrade yet. The rep told her the exact same thing that they wouldn't "profit" off that sale which makes absolutely no sense seeing as these phones are way overpriced msrp...
It's disappointing seeing how a company treats a loyal customer (she's been with them for 5 years) like that.
T-Mobile wasn't like that at all when I was under their service. Sprint should stop "training" these reps to only make profit and start teaching them to make their customers happy which will turn into profit in the end.

You are paying for the size. 15.4/16inch laptops are the norm. If you go bigger you pay more. If you go smaller, you pay more. We pay for them to fit it in a smaller package, with low power consumption. In addition, this has a higher resolution than most laptops that you can buy for 750. Also has many more sensors than a laptop does.

i guess this is why it helps to know the managers in the stores. thats pretty unfortunate and i would just go find one in the classifieds. fortunately my buddys father in law is the general manager and i worked with the assistant manager for several years elsewhere so i dont get this kind of BS.

While this logic is mostly true they're failing to account for the fact that not selling someone a phone outright (on their service) encourages them to look elsewhere.
Their play might not have been a "+1" on their report for sales for that day, but if it were me running the store I'd be more worried about the lost customer over the course of a year.
I had a very similar experience when buying the Nexus S 4g the day it came out. It's not a large reason but one of the reasons I left Sprint. Definitely didn't make me feel warm and fuzzy about doing business with a company.

I actually ran into the problem at a Best Buy, the one closest to my house. I called to see if they had them in stock, they had 9. I drove up there and first they can't touch my account because i have an EPRP account. Then, I tell them i want to buy it outright. I told them I wanted to price match Sprint outright price, they can't do it. Then I tell them fine i'll pay full price. They go and get their BBY Mobile manager and tell me they can't sell it to me because the phone is too new and they can't sell them outright until they have stable inventory, he said they only have like two white ones. I had just called minutes before going there and they had 9 black ones for Sprint.
I went up the road about 8 miles to another BBY, bought it there outright. They also said they can't price match "contract phones", however I don't think that's correct( They said it's a new policy) I bought my Note 2 and an IPhone 5 outright in November of last year and had them both price-matched.
I'm calling corporate to see what they say about the price-matching. Worst case scenario, I return it all. I've got thirty days. I think their price-matching policy might change when I attempt to return the 2 yr insurance policy and the phone together totaling right at a grand.
To make it even better, I'm going to attempt it at the first store who wouldn't sell it to me in the first place, so that they take the hit. I used to work at Best Buy, and that is not the way to treat a customer willing to buy a phone outright full price.
This seems to be the case with the sprint stores around my area as well. More interested in the "commission" rather than the actual customer service. I have to drive out of my way to a different sprint store further from where I live, because the ones in my area have gone to crap in terms of customer service.

Was the store a Corp store or third party? Some of the third party stores might say that but I have never heard of a Corp store doing it. In fact when I went in to get mine I was told it was 2 days before I was due for an upgrade, I hadn't realized it. They said to upgrade before my date it would be $100. So I bought it out right, and they did not say a thing. Did not have to renew my contract.

Sounds like you lucked out. BB's official policy is that they do not price match "contract phones." This change in policy was done back in March. Obviously, not every store seems to be following this. Two separate local BBs correctly rejected my Newegg price match request.

I actually ended up going to two different stores because the first one was out of stock, neither had a problem when I asked to match. The guy in the first store didn't know what newegg was and had to ask a manager if they matched to them.
Emailing Sprint's executive office seemed to get their attention, I missed their call, but they left a message saying they would like to talk to me about my experience.
How would any of you approach this? Is it worth asking for a credit for them jerking me around and wasting my afternoon? I am pretty much done with Sprint retail at this point. The only thing keeping me around is SERO and having useable LTE now.

Operation - Trick Best Buy on Sale of Nexus 5

Here is an idea that requires everyone to participate.
Plan: Try and get Best Buy to sell you a Nexus 5 before official launch. Maybe they have stock already.
Action: Call your local Best Buy and act dumb. Tell them you want to buy the Nexus 5 and to put one on hold for you to pick up. Or walk into a store if you prefer and do the same. Ask them if perhaps they have a Nexus 5 sitting in the back of the store. Make no mention of the fact that it hasn't officially been announced for sale.
I forget exactly which phone was sold before it was officially released a years or so ago. I remember reading that this guy got a phone before time and he was a bit nervous about it but posted details online about it. So this is possible people! If you remember this incident and the phone remind us.
If everyone does it we might get lucky and have more info to share on the Nexus 5.
Of course report back if you are successful. It might even be fun to report the failed outcomes too. Be creative. See if you can snag an inventory screen shot. See if at least they tell you that they are back there but that they can't be touched.
PS - Don't be that guy. If you think this is a stupid plan be polite. Offer your opinion and insight in a respectful way. You can't say it isn't possible because this has happened before. Sure there are practices in place to prevent this. But all it takes is one rookie mistake and things go unexpected. This is all in good fun. We might get lucky!

Who told you it was going to be sold at Best Buy? I see you have a N4, did you get that at Best Buy too?
We don't know if Best Buy is going to sell the Nexus 5. But they might. They sell all the other Google products (Nexus 7, Chromecast, Chromebook, etc). We also know from a particular Canadian store that there is Nexus 5 inventory. So the Nexus 5 isn't going to be exclusive to the Play Store. None if this is definite for Best Buy, but it can't hurt to try our luck. Perhaps Google learned from the N4 launch that Play Store only sales is bad way to launch a product.
... And I got my N4 and N10 from the Play Store on launch day.

I think there is a definite possibility it will be sold at Best Buy. Google seems to be taking a different direction with this phone. More hype, and evleaks posted that it is going to be available on Sprint..

If they're going to sell the phone it should be in their inventory systems; it's an easy thing to check.

Very true, that's why I find it's hard to believe that they'll have the N5 at launch. Someone should've posted a picture of the inventory already. I know I would if I was still there. (Like for the Wii's and PS3's.)
I'm pretty confident they are. I visit my local BestBuy yesterday and asked a customer service rep. He said he knew what I was talking about and went to ask his manager if he could sell it. When he came back 2-3 minutes later, he told me suddenly he wasn't permitted to talk about it because it's not official, so he couldn't legally converse over it. I'm going to try back at another location and see if I can get someone to pop early there, I also got my Nexus 7 2013 48 hours before launch just because I asked. Some guy went in the back and got it for me. Worth a try I suppose.
Hmm. I have a friend that works at BB.

So would it be better to go to the store and hang around the phones? Or just call the store?

The Amazon Watchtower

We know that other retailers will be carrying the Nexus 5 sooner or later.
For those of us with memebership in the primeverse or for those that prefer to save on shipping & save *ahem* file our own taxes, avoid the google play limbo experience and/or use our chase amazon visa's, I present to you the Nexus 5 Amazon thread.
Let's keep on the lookout for nexus 5 developments relating to amazon and post any information here!
I've heard rumors that amazon will be stocking somewhere between 3-7 days.
However, the rep that I spoke to didn't appear to have any information about upcoming nexus 5 availability.
Here's my chat with the rep:
http://goo.gl/DMza0n
I also believe the stock alerts in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2503657 added amazon to it's monitor list.
i have prime but still paid for expedited shipping and tax from the play store. i dont mind paying more to receive it earlier than to wait.
Pearl sure was useless. You should have told her a joke. Maybe ask her out on a date or something. Better luck next time bro.
I would have waited to purchase it from Amazon, however, I'll still get dinged with sales tax and only save $10 on shipping.
So, I'll just say the $10 was used for help out with the "instant gratification."
I put myself down for a 32GB black that ships in 2-3 weeks, if Amazon gets it before then I will cancel and order from Amazon.
If amazon sells the nexus 5 everything will be perfect

will the nexus 5 work on wind or mobilicity?
1700/2100 frequency?
http://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/1pmrrr/nexus_5_amazon_release_monitoring_cooperative/
It looks like the alert in that thread isn't set up yet. i followed the comments in the reddit topic about using page monitor. hopefully that works. Did we want to set up a hangouts or something? not sure of the best way.
Please Amazon, please please please sell the international version D821. PLEASE!
Sure we can definitely start a hangout if we have enough people/interest.
I think quite a few people just bit the bullet and bought the nexus 5 on google play.
When do you guys expect the N5 on Amazon?
I didn't follow the N4 when it came out. What do you think are we looking at days or weeks?

AFAIK, the N4 was not sold by Amazon. The only Google devices they sold were the Chromecast and the Nexus 7 (2013), which were both sold at the same price as the Play store and listed on Amazon on release day.
If I don't get my damn shipping notice by Tuesday like I should I will hope that Amazon has it by then and order it overnight shipping and cancel/resell the playstore order, smh

Best Buy has an insane markup — hopefully Amazon doesn't follow suit.

I have a feeling that the $800 markup is a Sprint thing to "encourage" people to buy it on contract.
I hope they will sell the Unlocked version at the same price as the Play Store since they didn't put a markup on the Nexus 7, Chromecast, or Chromebooks.

I really hope so. Come to think of it, has Amazon ever officially sold an unlocked Nexus phone? I know they didn't sell the Nexus 4, I'm pretty sure they didn't sell the Galaxy Nexus, and I'm vaguely remembering them not carrying the Nexus S or Nexus One.

This will be their first time officially selling a Nexus phone I believe.
HOWEVER! What has me some what worried is that the pre-order page for Amazon UK's Nexus 5 is extremely overpriced. I really hope it's just a placeholder and they'll fix it when they get it in stock. http://www.amazon.co.uk/LG-Nexus-5-...E&s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1383328580&sr=1-3 I would prefer using Amazon to get the phone since I have gift cards.

With BB selling the N5 for $800 and Amazon UK selling it for 520 GBP (~845 USD), I think it's unlikely Amazon US will sell it at the Play Store prices.
one of the posts on that reddit says they plan on pricing it like google. hopefully thats true.

[Q] Motorola or play store?

Hey guys, what is the difference in ordering from the play stor vs motorola ie shipping, warranty etc. Going to try and order Wednesday a 64gb white and would like to get different opinions. Thanks
Good luck. I would try direct from Motorola.
It is the very definition of insanity to sit on a computer and hit refresh hoping for a chance to have the privilege of sending a corporation large chunks of money. Google has been doing some type of social experiment just to see how insane people actually are. I fell prey to this insanity and wasted literally hours attempting to give them my money. Not again. If they begin normal sales I may purchase one but then again I am thinking no corporation who does this sort of thing actually deserves my money. I may look elsewhere. I pulled out an old Note 1 and realized what a great device it was so the Note 4 is looking more attractive to me, even though I like/liked the original concept of Nexus and have purchased every Nexus device that came out. But if I do get one it will be direct from Motorola.
That'll teach 'em. Google still gets your money.

It is not about "teaching" anyone. It is about putting up with bulls***.
It's up to you, really. The warranty is exactly the same (It's Motorola's warranty in both cases). Google, historically, has been better about replacing defective/damaged units, but Moto has Moto Care, which is one of the cheapest accidental damage warranties out there. At this time, it doesn't look like you can buy Moto Care for a Play Store model, but that may change (and you can always get the slightly more expensive one from Fair Trade). Also, Moto's site is infinitely easier to order from right now, and they offer a payment plan, unlike Google. On the flip side, Moto charges you immediately, whereas Google only places a hold on your credit card, and doesn't actually charge you until the unit ships. Speaking of shipping, Moto ships via FedEx ground only, whereas Google offers UPS Ground, 2nd Day, and Next Day shipping options.
Pros and Cons either way. I chose Google, because of my past experiences with their replacement policies, but many people swear by Moto, so I think you'll be happy either way.

Ok that's what I wanted to know, thank you.
Can't will just buy insurance through the carriers? Verizon, Sprint, etc
Evidently no MotoCare for Nexus 6
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/1b06206026
In the motorola forums they said that they will not be offering Moto Care for the Nexus 6.

That's also been refuted several times by Moto reps, including specific pricing ($85 for 2 years). At this point, it's really a guessing game, since no REAL information will come out until the Nexus 6 is actually launched. With Moto, if you didn't/can't order the extended coverage at purchase time, you can call with the device information once you receive it. We'll know for sure once people receive their devices and attempt to add coverage.

Also just found this, sorry if re post, make sure and read the entire feed. At first glance it gives you the impression that moto care will not be offered, then it goes on to say it is not offered right now, but will be.

From my personal experience I would order from the Google Play Store. Their customer support is amazing (surprisingly) and they gave me a replacement Nexus 5 at no charge because I had set a dumbell on my screen and it smeared everywhere. It was rooted/ unlocked and they could've cared less.
I've been lurking on the n6 forum because I want one but they are hard to comeby at the moment, and I am waiting to see what ATT does with theirs, if they will have ATT bloatware and so on.

Thanks for the advice, as far as I know all models from the carriers shouldn't have bloat ware, not 100% sure.
Isn't it cheaper to order through Motorola? Free shipping and people are reporting the tax is cheaper too.
PS.
