FYI: Taking OTA while rooted w/ twrp. - LG G Flex

I have been on dfuses stock rooted 4.4.2 D95920h for quite time now. Today I decided, after reading that others took the T-Mobile updates and were able to regain root, to take the updates. I first used the stock D95920h.kdz and the lgflashtool 2015 to flash to stock no root and no custom recovery. I took the first update (D95920m) and rooted with towelroot no problem. I then had to unchecked in the settings the "use network time" so I could manually change the date ahead to Jan 20th. That's the earliest it would let me search and take an update again. So I downloaded the D95920s update and let my A.D.D. take over and used the freedom flex.apk to install twrp. And later on I clicked install update not thinking about having root or custom recovery. And to my surprise the D95920s updated just fine as if my phone was stock except it updated through twrp. I was shocked. I then tried to reroot with no success. I tried everything from ioroot, stump, saferoot, towel root, even tried all the commands manually through adb. No luck. So I flashed the D95920h with the lgflashtool 2015 again and started over. This time rooting and installing twrp first and then only upgrading to the D95920m so I could root and push the twrp bumped.IMG. I'm going to dissect the D95920s update and edit the meta-inf folders updater script to not reboot when completed. Then before I reboot out of twrp and lose custom recovery I'm going to try to flash an updated supersu.zip as well as my flash able twrp.zip. to try and see if we can regain root and custom recovery on the latest update.
Buy moral of the story the update did its thing using twrp and didn't reject it. Or abort it. Even the the second go around when I went back a few versions and updated again it did just fine with twrp and I was not able to maintain twrp through update but was able to use twrp to update. Weird. I don't suggest trying this. My discoveries were purely accidental. And lucky I didn't end up with a mess to try and figure out how to get back up and running.

Matt, can you share lgflashtool 2015 and how to use it? I updated to D95920s and lost root, twrp, and download mode.

Yeah sure... It's self explanitory... But yeah ill upload it to drive in a lol bit and post a link.. It's the same basic tool as the lg flash tool or pc suite's restore upgrade errors tool it uses. It just doesn't go through all the update checks and checking the Internet for updates for it and the firmware its flashing..... I found it in the G2 forums... Can't remember where... But a dev in the G2 forums modified the lg flashtool to just work no questions asked.. No software upgrade check. No flash tool registration key check. No "must have internet connection" check... All that is required is that you already have the stick firmware you want it to flash... Preferably flash same version you're running. KitKat - KitKat... Jellybean - jellybean..... No need to be in download mode, it will reboot you to download mode ittself.. Figured that out when I went to the d95920s version and couldn't root... So I flashed the stock 4.4.2 kdz abs starts all over.. I've restored it 3 times this weekend already.... Lamo

Look in the g2 forums here on XDA.. Forum for flashing back to stock.. Or something like that... A guy mentions how he modded the lg flash tool 2014 to work offline with no other off line work a rounds and he renamed it lg flash tool 2015.

I don't have it here at work.

I've found nothing reatled to the lgflashtool 2015 at all but the thing you seem to be describing sounds like the 2014 lgflashtool.

yes you have to have a pc . Download the program and just follow the guide. Should be very simple . But you do need stock to get this update. After you are done flash back or just restore back-up

I checked the link and it is the old update from 12.17.2014 or 1.47.652.1. I couldn't find the newest update or anything from 2015 at all on the HTC site anywhere. I received the update today, 1.48.652.2 (30.68MB), but after it downloaded, restarted and tried to install, it gave me a red triangle with an exclamation point in the middle. Has anyone else seen this? (My bootloader is locked and I fully wiped my phone and sdcard before installing the Boost stock RUU so nothing should be interfering) I contacted HTC and they walked me through some steps to fix it, but eventually they told me to contact Boost. I didn't contact them yet, but Boost Zone says the system updates on my phone are up to date.
Please Help(boost)
When i try to install the update it takes me to recovery and when i try to flash the update
I get an error...and i flashed stock rom but when i use ruu installer i get security fail update fail.
Can someone help.

My phone fails when I try to install the update, also. Is your bootloader locked? If it is unlocked, the RUU update will fail.

I wouldn't bother. I contacted HTC and Boost Mobile and they both said there is nothing they can do about it. I think some of us have to wait until 1.48.652.2 is actually on HTCs site and good to go to download. For now all I see is 1.47.652.1. I wonder why some people can download it perfectly and others can't. I even tried to manually install it through the stock recovery. It downloads to the Download folder and I thought it had to be on the root of the sdcard. I moved it to the root of my internal sdcard and tried to install and it failed. I used the "OTA_A11_CHL_K44_DESIRE_SENSE60_Sprint_WWE_VM_1.48.652.2-1.47.652.1_R_release_420824qapx9dhr8n40gasg.zip" name and even renamed it to update.zip like other HTC phones use. I extracted the recovery.img and tried to flash, thinking it would help for some reason, with no success. I tried all I can do with my knowledge on this subject. Either one of the geniuses on this site can help or we'll have to wait.
Red Triangle 10% into 1.48.652.2 on Boost. On stock locked 1.47.652.1.. Is this the Lolipop update? cause if it isn't i don't care about it. :silly:
Tried installing on fresh RUU on Boost mobile. Update fails everytime. I looked into the update zip. For 30 mbs its got a lot of stuff in it. It updates most of the system apps as well as gapps. also theres some new certs getting installed. Maybe its a prep update.

No it's not Lollipop, just security enhancements and bug fixes. I contacted HTC and Boost and there is nothing they can do at the moment about our problems with updating. I think we just have to wait until Lollipop comes out and they release an official RUU.

Want to revert to stock recovery, where can I get current one from the recent OTA?

I flashed an OTA that was modified to work with TWRP, prior to that I unrooted, uninstalled xposed and flashed my current system files. OTA went well and I rerooted but no xposed.
My battery has been pretty bad since the update so I want to do a factory reset. I figure while I am at it I want to go back to stock recovery and not root immediately so I can see if Android pay will actually work.
Thanks
I am an idiot, I assumed that the full firmware wasn't posted yet in file factory but it appears that it has.
I guess I just want confirmation that this is the correct build for the new OTA I took: VICTARA_TMO_XT1095_5.1_LPE23.32-21.6_cid9_CFC.xml.zip

So to get back to stock everything, I can download the file above that Raistlin1 provided, and follow the motorola guide here https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images
I'm on stock rooted rom and stock recovery but better battery stats did something to my system so I can't uninstall busybox, then unroot, and apply a new OTA like I did last time. I think I'm just going to stay unrooted this time around.
Is fastboot included in the download? Is there a better place to download from file factory, I have about 10 hours left...
Thanks
Is there anywhere I can get this from that isn't 70Kbps or $13? Seems odd that Moto doesn't put it up.

I just used the official one from Motorola, it's 23.32-21.3 not 23.32-21.6 but just take the ota after you follow motorola's instructions. All told will take you less than an hour as opposed to half a day downloading the newest one.

I've read in multiple places on this forum that if you're on the latest OTA, installing an older one and then taking the OTA again will brick the phone.

Correct, if you were already on the new one, then downgraded, taking the OTA has a risk of bricking the phone. After a downgrade the safest bet is to flash the full firmware of the same version.

Yep, I couldn't get the newest ota because better battery stats irreversibly modified my system. I flashed the same version that was installed and then got the newest ota. I plan on using Android pay so I'm not going to re-root.

Epg2 firmware

Anybody get it yet? Supposedly went official yesterday. About 300MB.
I unlocked your mum's bootloader.
It just arrived, and it was about 300MB. IT rebooted into TWRP, which just sat there. I rebooted, and then Andorid complained that the update didn't work. Well, duh!
That said, now I would like to know what I should have done or should do in the future. Any thoughts?
Mine just arrived
What's new?
Just found a story about it here - it is indeed the July update:
http://www.tmonews.com/2016/08/t-mobile-galaxy-note-4-note-edge-july-security-update/
Links in that article will eventually point you to here, where the update can be downloaded manually and installed via Samsung Smart Switch.
https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-16486#update_download
Since I am rooted I am actually not sure what to do, and would appreciate some advice.
300 mb is a big update. If you are rooted you will need to flash the new firmware in Odin. But you may want to hold off. I am note sure it adds any new features and will probably make your device incompatible with any ROMs that are currently available.

Thanks - sound advice.
So, where should I be looking on my Note 4 for the 300 MB download that happened earlier this morning, so I can delete it or copy/move it off for later?
I just got it but waiting to see if there are any bugs or negative effects. I'm not rooted so there's no way to go back.

Still looking and haven't found any clues for changelog, not even security update. Anybody?
I unlocked your mum's bootloader.
Yep...trying to figure out how to avoid the update too.
I'm stick rooted with XPosed, Beastmode kernel, and a few other mods.
I just did the update, and I can confirm that TWRP, root, and xposed all work.
I don't know about compatibility with custom roms though.

I have no idea what "update from settings" means. Also, no idea where to start looking for the update - heck, I don't even know what to Google to find it. Thoughts?

So just to be clear, Overdrive is a MM-based T-Mobile ROM, basically just debloated and with some minor tweaks.
As a convenience, he has linked to "N910T Stock Odin Full EPG2 Firmware File," which we can flash using TWRP onto an otherwise stock+rooted MM 6.0.1.

Downgrade to 4.4.2 factory test firmware for SM-S903VL

I found that you can use kingroot to root the factory test firmware for the SM-S903VL
This is the only root method I know and I belive it is the first for the SM-S903VL
The factory firmware has drawbacks, no text calling or downloads or play store.
If anyone can find a way to make this better and actually be able to use the play store phone and texting let us know.
MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU DO THIS
Downgrade and root files found on my drive...

Use odin to flash and Kingroot to root, may take a few tries.

I flashed a custom recovery used from one of the other S5 phones but it kept booting into a page that said take it to a Verizon employee. I assume that's because of the bootloader being locked. I installed Flashify with an apk and used that to flash.

I used Flashify to flash a custom recovery image, TWRP. It worked but the device wouldn't boot into the recovery image or even back into the operating system anymore. It went straight to a page telling me to take my phone to Verizon store so Verizon could fix my phone. I tripped something.
I just opened Odin and reflashed 4.4.2 and kept messing around, that fixed my phone.

Hopefully... It took forever to find the firmware files and I only just happened to investigate the factory test files and noticed it was 4.4.2 and decided to try out different one click roots for the heck of it...
mortj19 said:
I found that you can use kingroot to root the factory test firmware for the SM-S903VL
This is the only root method I know and I belive it is the first for the SM-S903VL
The factory firmware has drawbacks, no text calling or downloads or play store.
If anyone can find a way to make this better and actually be able to use the play store phone and texting let us know.
MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU DO THIS
Downgrade and root files found on my drive...

Use odin to flash and Kingroot to root, may take a few tries.
If you are done and need to flash back to stock firmware flash these files with odin...

I wasn't entirely sure what you wanted when it concerned Apps so I just went to settings and took screenshots of everything under Settings > Device > Apps
Let me know if that's everything you need so I can put 6.0.1 back on before I head to work so I have a stable phone.

I was able to get the home screen and notifications but there is this black transparent thing with yellow text that is getting in the way of everything, you can see it in the screenshots. Also because this is Factory Mode apparently there is no lock screen? I've rooted again and am trying to see if I can turn it off for you but here is what I got so far

MM Update (QI2) - TWRP Won't Install!!!

Hi,
I just got this phone (same phone I had to replace the one that died)::
Samsung Galaxy (SM-N910T) Note 4 (QualComm)
Marshmallow 6.0.1
It's Unlocked.
Anyway, before I could install TWRP so I could Root it, Android Firmware Updates started coming through. I figured let them install and that way I'd have them. I knew that if I tried to install them after installing TWRP, it would just replace TWRP anyway.
After the last Update, the Build is now...
Build #: MMB29M.N910T3UVU3EQI2
I have tried TWRP 3.0.2.0 & 2.8.7.0 and even PhilZ 6.59.0 but nothing will go on! Odin (latest and tried older one) starts to Flash it, it says "Recovery" and then it says, "FAIL".
I'm thinking it's gotta have something to do with the Updates to Marshmallow???
PLEASE HELP! I can't do anything that I need to do without it Rooted and I can't Root it without a Custom Recovery.
Thanks!

From what I know, the bootloader isn't locked but I recommend installing a KitKat bootloader Using this thread
https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...ws-want-to-downgrade-to-4-4-4-kitkat-t3447773
From there you can install TWRP and/or update to qg1, qe2, or older.

First, thank you for responding!
I used that page on my last Note 4 (it died, hardware failure), after I tried MM but hated the Ext SD handling and so I went back down to the T2 KK ROM on that page and it worked fine (I installed the entire ROM). But my replacement Note 4 that just arrived already had MM as I said and updated to a Build # I haven't seen.
But if you look at the Build #, T-Mobile seems to have (via the Updates) turned the phone into a "N910T3" instead of a "N910T". Weird! Especially since I'm with MetroPCS. Hahaha! They're owned by T-Mobile though, use the same Towers, etc..
Anyway, I'd like to try and stick with MM this time around.
But you did hit one of my grey areas.
Let me see if I understand you correctly... If I were to Flash just the KK BL, my phone would/would not continue to Boot into Marshmallow as it is now, if I Flashed nothing but that?
Or am I correct in saying that your method would mean taking the phone back, so that it would be running KitKat and then going back up to Marshmallow using a different ROM that TWRP will be able to go onto?
The reason I'm fuzzy, is because I've never Flashed just a BootLoader, so I'm not sure what would happen if I Flash just the KK BootLoader onto an MM ROM and Reboot???
Thank you again for your time!

This method will turn your phone temporarily to a t2, of which a mm Rom will not boot. Since your goal is to have TWRP on a MM Rom, I would do the following:
1. Flash the t2 KK bootloader.
2. Find your appropriate KK bootloader (ie if you have a 910t find a 910t bootloader) and flash it
3. Flash TWRP
4. Flash a MM bootloader and modem.

Is this a method you've tried B4?
I'll check out that thread and see if they've got an MM Modem too.
Isn't that the "EFS" part of a ROM? If so, there are EFS Backup apps. But they may require Root though.

There is an MM ROM that is Rooted and has TWRP built in, but I don't know if it would Flash over this with Odin or not
I am also considering trying the entire KK T2 ROM again to go down to KK and then Flashing that MM ROM.
It has both Odexed & DeOdexed. If I remember right, DeOdexed is the better choice, right?
Thanks for all your time and help!

Hi,
You know what's sad, is that if I could somehow Roog it without TWRP, then I could use the way awesome "Flashify" app to try to get TWRP on this phone! <lol>

Could you please tell me where the files are that you used, so that I can have the exact same ones to work with? I looked at the link you provided, but I couldn't find just the BootLoader in it. I saw where someone requested just the BootLoader and Modem (you?) and "Trex888" said he would upload them right away and provide a link, but I did not see one ever posted. Just the link for the entire ROM.
Btw, in Odin, if you're Flashing only the BootLoader, do you use the "BL" button instead of the "AP" (formerly "PDA") button? What about just the Modem (thru Recovery?)?
I just tried Flashing the entire T2 KK ROM that I had used to go back from MM to KK on my first Note 4, but this one wouldn't take that either. It immediately said "FAIL".
I'm sorry if I'm a pain. It's just that I'm disabled and constantly laying on my side, so a laptop is out for regular use and so this phone is my main and only communication with the outside world. What I'm saying is that it's not a hobby phone and I have to get it right, because (see below). So I don't want to Flash something that may not do it, so I want to exactly match what you did.
You see, I can only sit up to Flash from Odin on my Windows computer with my phone cabled to it for just so long because of my condition.
Not your problem, I know. But I'm explaining it to you so that you can understand that I'm not just trying to be lazy. But instead, I need to make sure I do exactly what worked for you, with exactly those files, because if something goes wrong, it could take me days of short time computer access due to my situation (too much overwhelming pain) to figure it out and get it (hopefully) fixed. So you can see the importance, no doubt.
This phone right now (see Build #) says it's a T3, but whatever works.
Right now, it's without Recovery so I can't Root it, so I can't get Write access to my Ext SD, etc.. I need to Root!
Also, this T3 MM ROM is having issues with the Display. Sometimes it'll get all chopped up and I have to Reboot.
So anyway, I need to get this done and I would very much appreciate your further help!
Thank You!!!

Okay. Here is what I did exactly.
Download my Files here: https://1drv.ms/f/s!AJEa3D0cBAhIbQ
Stock 910T files here https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=20602
i guess if you need any other stock files sammobile works.
This will reset your phone!
1) Odin flash the AOG1 file. this turns the phone into a t2 phone.
2) Odin the ANK4 rom. this returns the phone to a 910t.
3) Boot into the ANK4 rom and download the MM update. This should land you on the first MM update, EPE3
4) Flash TWRP, thourgh AP, which should work. Might as well flash superSU or magisk.
At this point i would wipe everything and install a custom rom, but you could update to a newer boot loader and modem using the BL and CP buttons, respectively.
hope this helps

The OG1 is the T2 ROM that I had just tried and reported that unlike my previous Note 4, it would not Flash on this one to turn it into a KK T2. I also tried the other 2 ROMS to no avail.
I think it's because this one says it's a T3.
Thanks,
Dave

Guess what? I decided to take a picture of my phone's screen after it Failed to let me Flash anything at all in Odin. I tried TWRP again and this time read what my phone responds with and it says the following:

Well I searched around XDA and it seems to be a problem exclusive to the T3. Try going to settings -> security and see if there is a option to disable resetting protection. Or see if there is a way to disable OEM locking. However it's probably not there. The only successful thread I found was this

But if MM is already on the phone (mine), then it has FRP. See my other response.

Thank you for looking! I found out what it is.
It's "Factory Reset Protection" (FRP)
What it does, is keep someone else from Factory Resseting your phone if they steal it. When they reset it, during setup, they have to type in the last Google Email and Password that the phone used, before they can set up theirs.
After reading that, I remembered having to put my Google Info in at two separate points and seeing it telling me to "Verify", but I was just blowing right through setup, not reading all of the small print. I mean hey, I had no idea that even existed and was just annoyed that I had to type the same thing twice!
It will only be found on phones that already have Lollipop and up on them out of the box and probably not all of them yet. And you don't have to worry about downloadable ROMS, so those who have phones that started with KitKat, or even early versions of Marshmallow 6.0 or 6.0.1 would not have seen this happen to them. Even those who updated to the same version of Mm that my phone has won't, if they started with KK or an older MM and then updated to it.
Again, this is something that your phone would have "Out of the Box" and the phone (not all) would have at least L on it.
Just FYI, it's not just Samsung, either.
Just FYI, I have confirmed this info. It is a fact.
Once I have an easy to do, working fix, hopefully without having to perform a Factory Reset, I will "Create A Thread" and as normal for me, write clear and easy, step by step (not leaving any out) instructions on how to "Unlock FRP" and then come back here and post a link to the thread. Hopefully this week.
This phone will not beat me!!!
