Phone switched off, won't start up! - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I am new and I apologise if I have started a new thread when I shouldn't have done.
I had my Xperia Z3 Compact for two weeks before dropping it face down, resulting in a tiny hairline crack on bottom corner and a broken digitiser (sp). I was told it could not be replaced alone so I paid £168 for repairs. Anyway, I collected it yesterday after the repair shop having it for three weeks! I don't know if they charged it in there but it was 50% upon collection. I barely used it for around five hours and then I let it update all the apps (16 I think) - some had completed and some were still updating when the screen went black and turned off. I tried to turn it on and got a red LED and a large battery icon with red at the bottom - I don't know what the charge was at. I plugged in mains charger and left it a short time before trying to turn it on again. It repeatedly alternated between the red LED and large battery icon with red at the bottom and a 'zig zag' indicating charger connected for five seconds and a black screen and no LED for one second. This persisted for hours and phone will still not turn on. I plugged it into laptop and tried to connect to PC Companion to no avail. It had searched for drivers and failed to install 'S1Boot Fastboot' - I tried to rectify this and after hours of no success I think it installed but maybe incorrectly. The phone would still not connect despite the laptop recognising that a device was attached. It eventually sat with just a blue LED while attached after I held in power key and top volume button (as read online...) but upon disconnection it returned to the same battery flashing process as aforementioned. I have now given up after many many hours!!!
Can anyone offer any advice? I think I will return to the repair shop tomorrow but I am sincerely hoping I do not have to pay anymore to them!!
Thank you in advance.

cause it was in repair center and they may open its back and ... so best advice is to take it back to official service center
ur phone cannot get enough power for turning on process from battery (i think)
:good:

Thank you for the reply. I returned it to the repair shop who fixed original fault of broken screen/digitizer - I hope it does stem from that repair and isn't an additional fault! Will update incase any interest!
*UPDATE* - Repair guy said he took the phone apart, removed battery and put it back together again and it worked! Hope this is the end of it all now!

AT&T Tilt broken screen

My sister's boyfriend gave me his Tilt because he bought a Blackberry. Long story, he broke the first Tilt, they replaced it for him and he broke it again and he was told it would cost $500 to repair... so he bought the new phone and gave me the Tilt for free. So here's the deal: it will charge and turn on.. but only stays on for a few seconds. The LCD is cracked... pretty obvious. However, I was wondering if there was another problem since the phone won't stay on or if it's typical for it to turn off with just a broken screen. This is basically the sequence of events:
Hit the power button, a green LED on the left of the ear piece lights up and the phone vibrates for a second.
The screen then lights up but doesn't display anything obviously... other then the black liquid and white back lighting.
The screen stays on for about 15 seconds, shuts off, the keyboard lights up for a VERY quick second and then that's it... nothing else.
I'm wondering if I should try and find a replacement screen or if there is something else wrong with it. I saw the screen on phoneystore.com a while back but the site has said it's down for maintenance every other time I checked.
Other Info - I took the back cover off and above and slightly to the right of the camera is a black dot that says "VOID".
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Normally you only get the vibrate if you are turning on from the completely off position.
From the completely off position you have to long press the on/off button - is this what you are doing?
In any case, it's difficult to tell if there are any other problems. You could try tracking down on this site, one of thoses applications that lets you see / control the device from your PC.
That $500 figure is I assume for someone to do the repair for you, 'osc the screen would not cost anything like that.
Mike
Also that "void" dot you see I think is just over a screw and if you go inside your tilt you'd have to poke through that and it would void your warranty. So thats not because the screen is broken.
well, i don't have to hold it long before the green LED comes on and the phone vibrates... then the screen shuts off and i have to turn it back on again. it doesn't seem like it's staying on.
the $500 was from AT&T to have them fix it... so yes.
and thanks for the reply on the "VOID" - i thought it maybe had something to do with water damage or the cracked screen.
Have you tried turning it on with the wall charger plugged in? I thought I had seen my sons just shut down like that when his battery was pretty much dead and I was trying to turn it on.
Well, i was bored waiting for work this morning so i decided to put the SIM from my phone into the Tilt... I turned it on with my SIM in and it stayed on for longer... then I heard a little tick and kind of "whooosh" sound which I'm assuming is the start-up sound. Then nothing for a few seconds... then there is this "kerplunk" noise.. then the amber LED on the left of the ear piece starts flashing and then the phone starts vibrating and making a high pitch ring... the vibrating seems to be in a patter. Then I hear what sounds like it may be a shutdown noise and the phone is off again. However, the back light on the screen remained on the entire time. It might that with the SIM in it works, but the battery is dead so it turns right off? I have the wall charger here somewhere so I will have to try that after work. I will let you know the results.
most likely the sounds that your hearing are just an alarm clock going off. my guess is that the screen is the only thing that is really damaged. you can look online at ebay and get replacement screens with the tools necessary to replace the screen for under 100 bucks. i think that would be a good deal for you... keep us updated on the status
if possible if you are going to replace the screen from ebay you should take piectures. it would make a very nice guide for the noobs
yeah... i will definitely take pictures when i do it. i hope it's just the screen. i don't know why it won't stay on tho... i'm still trying to find the charger for it. i don't remember where i put it. i will keep you posted tho.
You can charge it with any USB mini type B lead plugged into a PC. You probably have one somewhere for a camera or other phone.
Don't be fooled by the shape of the socket on the bottom of the phone, it still fits.
mikechannon - do you know the name of any of these apps? i'm not able to find anything..
good news tho.. the phone now stays on and i am able to receive phone calls. i found a screen w/ tools for $70 shipped on e-bay. i want to try what you mentioned mike, hook it up to the pc. i just want to make sure everything seems okay before i buy a screen.
try my mobiler
okay... so i put the new LCD in and it works.. to an extent. it displays the at&t splash screen, then the 3G animation, then gets to the windows mobile 6.0 splash screen and it hangs there for a few seconds then shuts off. i thought maybe it needed a new battery because it wouldn't stay on before so i ran to the store and got one and it's charging now. i'm going to wait a few hours and try again...
when i try and turn the phone on when it's plugged into the charger it seems to hang on the at&t screen... this doesn't seem normal.
also, when it's not plugged in and goes through the screens, on the at&T screen it looks like it's showing RGB values or something in red text in the bottom right corner of the screen. is this normal?
Sorry, did not see your 3/22/08 post.
The RGD values in RED are normal (info about radio version etc) if you are starting from the off position or have just done a soft reset.
I'm not sure why it is hanging at the point it does. I am assuming you have done a hard reset? (you may have said - but I have not read back all the posts)
Mike
nope... no hard reset.
when i turn it on while it's plugged in the amber LED on the ear piece goes out for a minute, the AT&T screen comes up then a few seconds later the amber LED comes back on and it just stays there.
i was able to get it to get past the windows mobile 6.0 splash screen but it says 6 new notifications/alarms, then starts buzzing and ringing and turns off. one time it said battery was critically low or something. i want to assume that it is charging because the amber LED comes on.. but who knows. i would hate to have to give up at this point.

Actually that all sounds pretty normal. Yes expect to get a whole bunch of notifications that have accumulated and never been cancelled. When they come up try to cancel them quickly - just choose dismiss. Don't be surprised if there are so many that it crashes the device and you have to re-start possibly several times until eventually you get past all those notifications!! This also happens when you restore a backup - I have seen my device go absolutely bananas with many many notifications and a crash is not unexpected.
If the battery is not charged give it a good hour of charging before trying again. One thing that puzzles me is that if you have the amber light that shows charging (good) then why does it give you a message saying battery low?? Normally you will never get that notification whilst on charge.
Mike
mike,
thanks for the replies. i was able to dismiss a few of them earlier and then the battery message came up and the phone turned off. it wasn't plugged in at the time. however, i left for the day and left it plugged in for probably 7 hours or more...turned completely off...and i came home and it got past the windows splash screen again and then said the main battery was critically low and turned off. can't get it to stay on now. i'm lost...
it seems like my only other option is to try a new charger.. but if the LED comes on it would seem as though it is working. i checked all of the contacts where the battery goes and like i said earlier, i bought a new battery this morning. i really don't want to take it apart again. while it was apart i did my best to clean the any dust or other build-up. i guess i could try and charge it on the computer.
my phone does the same thing I accidently dunked about an inch of it the top of the phone into a cup, thought it was ok after i let it dry off and it would boot up but I still can't get the phone to really charge, the orange light will go on but the battery never charges and I used to get the red critical battery warning. Ive tried a bunch of different chargers but still nothing just gets to the second splash screen in duttys rom and turns off now. Hopefully you can get your up though, just wish i could get 30 minutes of battery to get it back to stock rom and everything so i could send it back as the bottom never got wet and the water check under the battery is still white.
Mmmm. Well sounds like there is a hardware charging problem. Pity you don't have one of those chargers where you can dock a spare battery to charge it up. It would be a hassle though if that's the only way to charge the battery. There are ways to charge the battery by wiring the battery directly to a set of AA batteries or a charger, but that would not solve the problem in the long run.
There are companies that will replace the USB connection on the M/board but that would be to assume that is where the fault is - and I'm not convinced it is. The fact that the orange charge LED comes on suggests the USB connection may be ok and that it may be the battery connection block that has a broken connection. This is not easy to repair if at all. I have seen one reported case where that block with the gold connectors had broken connections and a repair company could not resolder all the connections.
One thing to try regarding the battery connector block. With the luck of the Gods it might just be that one or more pins is not making a good batter contact. Try cleaning the pins and battery contacts. (A bit of a forlorn hope though)
Mike
well, good news!
i left it plugged into the computer all night and turned it on this morning and it went through all of the alarms... i dismissed them all. it then stayed on!!! so i went to the system settings and looked at the battery life and it said it was at 100%. perhaps it was the charger... which would be odd. now when it's plugged into the PC the amber LED comes on for a second then switches to green. i'm going to try and use it for the day and make sure i can turn it on and off without any problems. the AT&T store is closed here today so i'll have to get a charger one day during the week. i will post back at the end of the day.

Xperia TL Charging Issues

I had A LOT of charging issues right out of the box when I got my first TL in April. The main issue was it had to be powered on to charge. Not a helpful situation when the Battery is at Zero. I had to do the workarounds just to get it to power on, and that was rarely successful the first try. It would also power down at 20% and record a different % when powered back on.
The last time it died it took being plugged in for over 12 hours to power back on. When It finally came to life, the touch screen was unresponsive, and any attempt to repair it VIA PC Companion or other programs failed. PC Companion would not recognize it being turned off + VOL Down, this likely tied to the fact that it would not charge if it was powered off.
Talked to Sony, They said mail it in. Luckily AT&T has two warranty repair centers close by. Tech Guy tried to hard reset it (Did that a 1,000 times myself) Power + Volume Up until 3 vibrates. When that failed, he Overnighted me a replacement no questions asked.
Got the new one today FedEx from Texas. Just the phone, no cables or box. I have to return the Borked one in the container this one arrived in FOC. First thing I do is plug it in. It Charges While Off!!! It gives the classic battery level indicator if the power button is tapped! The LED glows green when plugged in and asleep!
TLDR: If your TL or any Xperia does not charge the way you are used to a phone charging, this is not a simple glitch. Your phone is likely to fail and you should take it in and get it swapped via Warranty. Try your provider first

Update: Have had the phone for almost 3 weeks and have not had a single problem! Battery percentage is correct, it will charge via any method, be it car/USB/wall.
Same problem here. I called them last night. Charged overnight, but when I got up, same issue. I'll call today and get another (my 2nd) phone.

Xperia Z1 won't boot? Last resort try this.

I know this has been a common problem among Z1 owners. I recently purchased a Z1 off craigslist and it had been working for 3 days. Today I had powered down my phone and attempted to turn it on. To my surprise the phone would not turn on, and would not display any sort of charge indication when plugged it (LED, screen, etc). I had tried hard resetting it and all the common troubleshooting with no luck until I decided to remove the back cover.
- (With caution) Remove the back cover on your Z1 (Using heat, suction cup, and something to pry it up with).
- Once you have done that remove the 9 screws holding down the shell then (very carefully remove the shell).
- Once you have done that remove the battery terminal so the battery is disconnected.
- With the battery disconnected plug in your z1 and you should see the phone LED blink and screen flash "SONY".
- Now remove the charger and re-connect your battery.
- Hold the power button down and volume up until the phone resets
I hope this worked for you like it did for me.
PS make sure to replace the back cover adhesive as your phone is NO LONGER WATERPROOF.
I'm thinking to do the same thing as it helped many people. Just curious, was your phone Z1 completely dead? NO LED light at all?
Mine shows no sign of life so far, no LED, nothing.
How long did you leave it plugged in for?
When mine got bricked, it took about 24 hrs. before the red led started blinking.
Just wondering if it's actually the same problem.

24 hrs to charg by wall charger ?
This method didnt work for me, I'll have it repaired (then sell it) soon but warranty is void. Either way I wasnt able to claim warranty as I bought it from local classifieds without receipt of purchase. At the mean time bought another Z1 for $440 with no yellow tint issue.
This method didnt work for me, I have to change a new main broad。

[SOLVED] Dead Xperia back to life!

Alright, so I was clumsy enough to drain my Xperia SEVERAL TIMES.
Honestly I blame the software or calibration, but also myself, since it didn't shut down when it should.
The following would happen, that my phone wouldn't charge. No red LED, nothing. Then when it showed, after countless tries and different power sources, it finally did. It worked like 3 times. Then it started shutting down at 30%, then once when I was using it at 50%. All of a sudden. Since then, it died. It didn't charge, even after I left it for 2 days on the charger. I tried every week, but nothing would happen. Eventually the phone would start vibrating when plugged into the charger, and just die after exactly 30 minutes, every time, giving pulses of vibration.
I opened up the phone, disconnected the battery, and pressed the connector of the vibration motor.
When the vibration is non-stop, even whent he phone is off, it's because of a faulty vibration motor itself, or its connector!! I only had to press it and it stopped.
I left the battery disconnected for 1 to 2 weeks, I don't remember. When I felt the CPU cover, it was kind of electrocuting me. I put a paper between the black strip that leads between the battery and the motherboard, to which somehow the electrocution stopped. I left it charging for 2 days, with the RED led full on all the time. I gave it little hope, but I still pressed the power button mutliple times through out the charging time. This morning, te RED led was Dark Red, very weak. I pressed PWR + VLM DOWN and it gave a little pulse.
It's alive again! I let it charge to 100%, made immediately a backup, and I'll see if it will keep working. I will have to send the phone back to Sony anyway, as I think that the vibration motor will start acting up again as soon as I pick up the phone from the table (it's that sensistive yes). Also, I cannot leave the paper there, and I just want a full functioning phone. Only need to get the silicone glue strip from a distributor that I know so I can properly close it off.
I didn't send it because I needed my data, basically.
I would say, if your phone doesn't react to anything and you're out of warranty, it's worth it to keep trying to charge it, or take the shortcut and buy a new battery, open the phone and connect the new battery. It's really that simple. Otherwise, it might be your motherboard that's dead.
I hope this could help some future troubles of XDA's. Maybe make a new sticky, as this question comes along quite often?

I tried to repaire my Xperia Z but i think i killed it...

Hi, last year i got an Xperia Z with a broken screen (not the whole screen, only the tactile part of it)and i wanted to repare it to make it my maine phone.
Last time i checked, before replacing the screen, it turn on succesfully and i could see the device with Sony Pc companion.
Now that i finally got the time and the spare part, i decided to change the whole screen and put the device back together.
When i was finished, i plugged the device on the wall and nothing happend, i guess it was because the batterie was flat but letting the phone to charge a whole 48 hours and still nothing...
Maybe it was the usb port on the phone so i got myself a Dock to charge the phone but still the same problem, then i thought it might be the battery so i got a new one and the clossest that i get to a sign of life by the device was a red LED light, for about 15 seconde then nothing, just the usual 3 red LED blinks to tell me the battery is flat (but it wont charge) and it won't get recognized by Pc companion anymore neither...
Do you have any advices or clues about what went wrong and if i could fix anything ?
