Mobile network issues - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am on T Mobile in the Chicago suburbs. Just started a new job and the reception isn't great but last week it was at least usable. Today I get in and my Moto X 2014 keeps disconnecting and switching networks (LTE/HSPA/3G) and dropping altogether. The signal is usually around 2 or 3 bars. I drove to an area on lunch that I know has good reception (3 or more bars) and the same thing. Sometimes I get a notification "Selected network (T-Mobile) unavailable. I have tried all 3 networks modes, resetting the APN, changing the APN, manually selecting the carrier, all combinations of WiFi/Bluetooth on/off, reseating the SIM card, booting without the SIM card.
I unlocked the bootloader (through Moto) and rooted with CF Auto Root last night. I didn't notice the issue at home, where I usually get great reception, but I will have to pay more attention tonight.
Any ideas? I tried aLogcat hoping I might get something but didn't. I am not terribly familiar with logging in Android.

Maybe TMo is having issues? Have you called them?

No issues with T Mobile. The more I observe it the more I think it is a 5.0 "feature" that is causing the issues. I just walked across the hall and got about 4 bars on LTE, downloaded an app, all good. I walked back over to my desk and unlocked the phone and noticed that the signal was 3 bars LTE, awesome. I start browsing and it drops to HSPA, a few more seconds and it drops the network altogether. I waited 5 minutes and the phone had 2 bars LTE, stayed there for a few seconds until I went to a website and it did the same thing. I remember reading that lollipop introduced a new feature that disconnects from a network when it cannot connect. I think that's what's causing my issue,

So I wiped my phone and the issue got better but still exists. I logged for a while when I saw the issue and came across the error message below. It would repeat about 20 time each time the network disconnected. QMI is a Linux process that calls the mobile radio from my research.
01-16 12:49:18.327 E/QC-QMI ( 407): qmi_qmux_open_connection: connection is disabled for conn_id=29
01-16 12:49:18.327 E/QC-QMI ( 407): qmi_qmux_tx_msg: failed to open inactive connd_id=29
01-16 12:49:18.327 E/QC-QMI ( 407): qmi_qmux: TX failed, connection inactive or in reset, conn_id=29, status_flags=4
01-16 12:49:18.327 E/QC-QMI ( 407): qmi_ctl_tx_msg: qmi_qmux_tx_msg failed
01-16 12:49:18.327 E/QC-QMI ( 407): qmi_ctl_handle_request: qmi_ctl_tx_msg call failed

I to have the 1095 stock not rooted and I am not having any issues here in the Chicagoland area. I just ported out of AT&T and I think the data and service is on par with AT&T.
I work around Midway and live in the West burbs.

Is it my phone or the network?

I'm having a hard time figuring out if i'm having a phone issue or is it a network issue that I need to get used to. Simple tasks such as navigation I can rarely get to work if i've already started moving. It will act as if searching for service for 2 or 3 minutes before it gets a lock and will begin navigating. I have had times with AT&T where I had little to 0 service and navigation would pick up fine, but with Sprint I see connection lost a lot more. Is this a Sprint thing or you think I got a bad phone?
I will have 3-4 bars of service on 3G and can stream music but refreshing something like Twitter can take several minutes or timeout completely. I live in Atlanta and have rarely seen 4G/LTE which I believe to be strange because Sprint's coverage map indicates they have strong coverage most of the places i've experienced the hiccups.
What do you guys think?
I think it's a phone issue. I have it as well. ...at least the "GPS lost" issue. Didn't have it with my note 2. I get fast GPS locks though.
No issue with data except for sprints typical slowness

I haven't had that issue but I don't live near anywhere as large a metropolitan area as Atlanta so that could be an issue. My GPS locks are nearly instant but I do have problems streaming music sometimes.

I would call Sprint Customer care and tell them you are having issues with data services and that you have heard of this issue. Have them verify your UUIC ID number under settings/about/Phone identity. This is also the same as the SIM ID. They may say oh thats for international only but what they don't know yet is that number must match on your account for all your data services to behave properly. I figured this out after 6 phone exchanges.....the phone was fine....it was that number that was messed up.
My symptoms where:
- Slow data
- Dropped calls
- Radio was always using EvDo rev. A (check in settings/about/network)
- Never on EHRPD (Required for 4g LTE handoff with the towers)
- 104 data errors (these still happen but much less and is because they are still building out the 4g network here)
I hope this helps and will fix your issues. It did for me.

Unlocked on Tmobile Fix Request

I finally got my Sprint HTC One to accept my prepaid Tmobile SIM, I have not tested out data yet since I only use the pay by the minute plan (I will upgrade to unlimited everything later)
But it constantly keeps disconnecting and I have to manually connect it to Tmobile's network.
This usually happens if I'm moving, or if the signal is weak. (For example, I never lost connection overnight at my house, but I did lose it while I drove to work this morning, and since I would get like 1 or 2 bars inside my work, it kept on disconnecting.
Right now I set the settings to GSM Auto (PRL) seems to be stable, but I've stayed in one place so far.
I've tried WCDMA preffered, but it says "This SIM does not allow connection to this network"(could be because I'm "Pay by the minute"'?)
I also Turned on IMS registration required in the Phone info setting place, but I don't know if that makes any difference.
If we can somehow get this fixed then it would be awesome! Since I already canceled my Sprint contract and switched to Tmobile prepaid to save some money.

Frequent Random Network Drops

I've seen a number of threads where people post about their device dropping network data connectivity, and needing a reboot to solve it.
My issue is a bit different. Occasionally (I've noticed it 3-4 times today) when I go to send a text (SMS) or to use a data enabled service like Hangouts, that my phone shows no bars at all.. not even just no data, but the bars are grey and there's a red x. I wait about 15 seconds and it reconnects, then another 10 seconds later, the data is live again.
Phone is a private sale and under 1 month old, and all the Stamina functions are off.. I do see that the "Queue background Data" is turned on, but I don't think this should effect, no?
Not sure what digits I should be looking at to know if this might be a hardware vs software issue.. build is listed as .93
Im no stranger to unlocking and flashing, but I've kept this stock cuz it's tight and I adore the battery life.
Suggestions?

check in settings in network and set your network to the one you use , like gm/wcdma /lte , maybe your phone is strugling to find 3g or 4g , try it , who knows it might solve the issue , ty
Been about a month since I posted, and I'm still experiencing this issue. I often thumb my phone on and it's not connected. I don't really mind waiting for the 30 seconds or so that it takes to jump back on the network, but it often means I miss calls, and since it's my business phone, it kinda bums me out to suddenly get a VM notification of a missed call even though it never rang.
Is there some sort of utility that I can use to monitor the network activity to see how frequently it drops, and for how long? I've looked into ones on Play but they don't seem to have a history, just something that shows what data up and down is currently being reported.
Sadly the only Sony store in my city (and I think the country - Canada) has recently closed for good, so I'm not sure how to go about warranty repairs...

I don't have a solution, but I can tell you that you're not alone. I've been experienced the same thing on my Z3C. I sometimes wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the MVNO I use doesn't support 4G LTE.

Interesting.. Your issue isn't just data, but a complete network disconnection? Im with Fido which is an MVNO under Rogers, but I thought they supported LTE. The issue also persists even on wifi

Yes, it seems to be a complete loss of the mobile connection. When I wake the phone I see gray bars and a red X on the signal strength indicator. Within seconds the phone re-acquires and the indicator goes to 2 or 3 bars. I have also seen it happen with wifi active. The frustrating part is that it doesn't seem to do it often enough to troubleshoot. I'll notice the problem maybe a couple of times a month and there's nothing obviously different about my usage patterns in those instances.
Mine does it at least a dozen times a day. I can only assume this as I frequently miss calls and at least 3-4 times a day I see it happen. =(
Same Problem
Randomly I have no connection at all but after a few seconds everything wents back to normal. Did not have this problem with T-mobile in Germany but with with O2 I have. With T-mobile I had LTE but with O2 I don't, so I guess that's the reason.
Interesting... I've disabled LTE and now have it on 3g/GSM. We'll see how it works moving forward, and I'll post again in a week. Stay tuned.
Service Providers
In the mobile network settings one can change the service provider manually. With LTE enabled my provider has three entries: LTE, 3G and 2G. Connecting two LTE fails, because my provider blocked it in my plan. Having LTE enabled, it often tries to connect to LTE I assume. I switched off LTE and set the provider manually to 3G. Maybe that helps. We'll see.

Interesting.. I have LTE as part of my network and plan... But once I made changes to the settings as I indicated, I no longer receive the network drops I originally experienced.. I might just be missing the alerts, but it seems fixed... #crossedfingers

Z3+ Signals, No GSM, jumping 3g.

Hello.
I bought my phone just 3 days ago together with my gf.
She bought the exact same phone and same carrier as me on the same shop..
Around here we are supposed to have good 3g signals all over, but not inside our house, there we can only use GSM.
Her phone works perfectly, with 3-4 bars gsm signals inside house.
But i get nothing when entering house. NO bars what so ever, (even if i pick GSM ONLY from settings).
I got to service menu and read "0 db" on signal.
I tried everything, Clean sim, restart phone, factory settings, changing GSM/3g/4g priority etc, and even tried MY sim in HER phone.
Its defo a hardware/software issue on my phone.
My experiences from 3g and 4g with this phone is that 4g seem stable and good, while 3g (outside my house) seem to often go from max to none all the time. jumps up and down
and sometimes leave me with no signal for 5 minutes until they are back.
I contacted the carrier to check and everything seems fine over there.
Any suggestion? Could it be really possible that i got a faulty antenna? if im going with my phone to the store for a replace they would probably not belive me or take my reason for real
EDIT: Have to add that the past 12 hours of constant trying to figure out the problem i had a few cases with signals while i was trying to switch to "gsm only" but they lasted for 5 seconds and were gone again.
Had the same, send mine back, saw in the log of the repair department that you refreshed the software. But will check
if they have changed something. Comes back in a few days from now.

phone signal drops constantly (data + call signal) also data is now E not LTE

So i've been using china unicom's 4g and it worked absolutely fine, I had LTE signal pretty much all the time.
Now, for some reason I cannot get LTE data ( called unicom and they said nothing had changed on my package and i should be receiving it) and my signal constantly drops, the data is stuck on E and i go from 4 bars to zero every couple of minutes...
I have tried my sim card in another phone and it works fine, i have also put other sims into my htc one and the same thing happens (E signal and constant signal dropping).
help is very much appreciated! I cant find anything online regarding this issue and im about to ditch this phone and purchase a new one if there's no fix
