Frequent Random Network Drops - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've seen a number of threads where people post about their device dropping network data connectivity, and needing a reboot to solve it.
My issue is a bit different. Occasionally (I've noticed it 3-4 times today) when I go to send a text (SMS) or to use a data enabled service like Hangouts, that my phone shows no bars at all.. not even just no data, but the bars are grey and there's a red x. I wait about 15 seconds and it reconnects, then another 10 seconds later, the data is live again.
Phone is a private sale and under 1 month old, and all the Stamina functions are off.. I do see that the "Queue background Data" is turned on, but I don't think this should effect, no?
Not sure what digits I should be looking at to know if this might be a hardware vs software issue.. build is listed as .93
Im no stranger to unlocking and flashing, but I've kept this stock cuz it's tight and I adore the battery life.
Suggestions?

check in settings in network and set your network to the one you use , like gm/wcdma /lte , maybe your phone is strugling to find 3g or 4g , try it , who knows it might solve the issue , ty

Been about a month since I posted, and I'm still experiencing this issue. I often thumb my phone on and it's not connected. I don't really mind waiting for the 30 seconds or so that it takes to jump back on the network, but it often means I miss calls, and since it's my business phone, it kinda bums me out to suddenly get a VM notification of a missed call even though it never rang.
Is there some sort of utility that I can use to monitor the network activity to see how frequently it drops, and for how long? I've looked into ones on Play but they don't seem to have a history, just something that shows what data up and down is currently being reported.
Sadly the only Sony store in my city (and I think the country - Canada) has recently closed for good, so I'm not sure how to go about warranty repairs...

I don't have a solution, but I can tell you that you're not alone. I've been experienced the same thing on my Z3C. I sometimes wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that the MVNO I use doesn't support 4G LTE.

Interesting.. Your issue isn't just data, but a complete network disconnection? Im with Fido which is an MVNO under Rogers, but I thought they supported LTE. The issue also persists even on wifi

Yes, it seems to be a complete loss of the mobile connection. When I wake the phone I see gray bars and a red X on the signal strength indicator. Within seconds the phone re-acquires and the indicator goes to 2 or 3 bars. I have also seen it happen with wifi active. The frustrating part is that it doesn't seem to do it often enough to troubleshoot. I'll notice the problem maybe a couple of times a month and there's nothing obviously different about my usage patterns in those instances.

Mine does it at least a dozen times a day. I can only assume this as I frequently miss calls and at least 3-4 times a day I see it happen. =(

Same Problem
Randomly I have no connection at all but after a few seconds everything wents back to normal. Did not have this problem with T-mobile in Germany but with with O2 I have. With T-mobile I had LTE but with O2 I don't, so I guess that's the reason.

Interesting... I've disabled LTE and now have it on 3g/GSM. We'll see how it works moving forward, and I'll post again in a week. Stay tuned.

Service Providers
In the mobile network settings one can change the service provider manually. With LTE enabled my provider has three entries: LTE, 3G and 2G. Connecting two LTE fails, because my provider blocked it in my plan. Having LTE enabled, it often tries to connect to LTE I assume. I switched off LTE and set the provider manually to 3G. Maybe that helps. We'll see.

Interesting.. I have LTE as part of my network and plan... But once I made changes to the settings as I indicated, I no longer receive the network drops I originally experienced.. I might just be missing the alerts, but it seems fixed... #crossedfingers

Problem with Orange branded Kaiser

Has anyone else experienced this problem.
Although the phone shows it is connected to the Orange network quite often voice calls to the phone go straight to the voicemail, it seems that the phone is taking so long to process the call that the network assumes it is switched off and then diverts the call to the voicemail. a text then arrives notifying me of a missed call. Any ideas.
Incidentally I put the sim card back in my Artemis and everything worked OK

I too, seem to experience the same issue.. :\
It only seem to occurs after a while that the phone is in "extended sleep mode" (aka press the power key).
Now I'm trying a few things, I've switch the phone to GSM only network to see if THIS might be the issue... but if someone knows anything about this I'd be more than glad to be able to fix the issue
By the way my Kaiser is unbranded, the original HTC one!
You say you get a text re missed call, as opposed to a missed call notification. That would normally mean that the network couldn't see your phone - as normal internal missed calls (ie where you didnt asnwer) wouldn't send a text but would use an internal missed call counter.
So... do you have really weak 3g signal where you are and although the device thinks its connected, it isnt really?
Or is your device faulty...

Well I can say for me that the signal is always allmost full bars.
and I get txt msg saying either I have missed a call or that I have a new voicemail msg (Those are service provided by my carrier) So it's NOT "missed call notification" by WM.
So the network can't see your device when its trying to route a call to it...
Have you tried the device on GSM only? (settings, phone, band, change it from auto to gsm) to see if its a 3g network problem?

Yeah that's what I mentionned earlier, so far it seems to be okay.
But what could cause this? The device switching between the networks?
I've got it as well, but I have to say I have experienced this on the Wizard also, and that's not a 3g phone. Also had it on the Universal, and that's why I used a Tornado for a year as it didn't occur on the smartphone version of WM5.
I had high hopes of such bugs being ironed out in WM6.
I use the power key to put it in standby, as I didn't want to leave the screen using power whilst it decided to go into standby by itself. Is this extended sleep/standby that I am activating the wrong thing to do? What should we do to get it into a light sleep?

Well I dunno if it's cause by that, but this settings is located in the Power options of the setttings pannel... in the advanced tab you can tell it tu activate it or not and after how long u want it to *turn off the device* (which is what I call gently the "extended power saving")
Just spoke to Orange, apparently the 3G network went down yesterday this coincided with us getting the 3 tytn's so has probably made the problem worse. We were going to send the phone back under the 7 day return policy but have now decided to change them onto the gsm network as suggested by orange and see what happens when the 3G network re-appears.
I had the exact same problem with my Hermes on Orange about 14 months ago - just for a couple of weeks - as they were having network issues on 3g in my area.
3G masts are quite temperamental and if your local 3g provision keeps failing, they will replace them.
I haven't had any repeats of the problems for over a year.
The only annoying things about having to switch down to GSM are 1) no simultaneous data and voice, 2) slower surfing over GPRS and 3) you will get used to the massive battery life increase and switching back will hurt!

Just now I had a second round of this problem at work, and I had the same thing yesterday here. Very f***ing frustrating and since the primary function of a phone is to make calls, it's particularly ****e that it doesn't do it well.
No calls and only one out of 6 SMS's were delivered. I had to do a soft reset and then I had two voicemails and 5 unread SMS's pop up.
If the calls/SMS's were retrieved after a soft reset does this mean that it's the phone and not the transmitter? I use my phone for work and this is becoming a real problem.
I can foresee this phone being off to HTC for 'repair' getting a new unit, flogging it and going back to WM smartphone edition.
No - it sounds like a network issue.
Switch to GSM for a week. Then switch back and it should be fine.

Yeah, I did some searching on the subject and saw it occurred on many different WM phones, and switched it to GSM only.
It didn't fix it, and it simply wouldn't ring. I checked by calling from a colleague's phone and it displayed: 'warning active call divert on' or something like it.
I was most pissed off, as per my previous post.
When I got home, I activated (via network codes) call divert to my car phone number, then sent the cancel network code to deactivate it.
Tested via home phone and it rang. It was active (screen on) and rang withing one ring on the home phone. So I pressed the power button and tried it. Same result, imperceptibly slower if it was slower.
I work in a pre-fab unit made from corrugated steel on top of a hospital (obviously some sort of rapid office space 'solution'), and whilst I get 2 to 4 bars of 3G in there, and seeing the issues whilst on GSM only, I am totally and utterly confused as to the cause of the problem!
The Kaiser is however, on probation. For now
Cheers,
Joe

Is this normal? Signal Loss

Hi:
I have a Tilt on AT&T's network. Today I was about an hour away from home, and noticed a complete loss of signal. My other phone, a Motorola Razr V3xx, had 3 bars of signal at the same time. I had this same problem in the same rural area before, and just assumed there was nothing I could do about it.
This time though I decided to turn off 3G on the Tilt (since I know it can sometimes interfere with reception), and still nothing. Then I did a soft reset (still had 3G off), and I finally found a signal, as well as the Roaming icon.
Is this normal behavior? The Razr also has 3G, but apparently must switch over to edge when it is in a non-3G area. Why would my Tilt need to be manually reset in order to find a signal?
Thanks!
Hi:
I'd really appreciate any reply
Even if it's to tell me that this is unheard of behavior. My warranty is about to expire, and need to have my phone replaced before it expires if this is a fault unique to my phone.
Thanks again!

I'm not sure why but your phone should have switched automatically. For me, I have my band set to GSM manually.
Are you using usually using 3G with no problem? There's a hardware fault in some devices that will appear about a few months of usage where 3G becomes inoperative. When connected on 3G calls will fail, and one needs to force GSM and reboot to be able to use the phone again. Return to service center needed for repair, mine is there now.
Hi:
Thanks so much for your replies!
I think I probably need a replacement phone, so I guess on Monday I'll call and spend the 15+ hours p) on the phone to AT&T to get a new one, lol.
Kilrah, yes my 3G usually works fine, but apparently when I go into a non 3G area it just loses signal. My phone never really gets great reception anyway, so hopefully the replacement will be an all around improvement.
Thanks again!!

No 3G since FRF83

Any solution?
Only GPRS/EDGE does work, if 3G is available, it disconnects automatically until 3G isn't available.
Solution: Set to 2G-Only :-(
Anyone has the same problem?
I didn't have this problem with FRF 72.
Provider: Sunrise Switzerland
Radio: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7
Have you tried going into your phone settings from *#*#4636#*#* and setting it to wcdma only? I did that on mine not too long ago and no more dropping to edge for me!

does it lose complete signal? or does it show 3g still but just not doing anything?
Mine was working at first after flash. Then at about 2am it just kept trying to load then times out. Still shows 3g but just dont do anything. Im hoping its just tmobile messing with their towers... I dont see why it would work at first then not now..
The problem is, that i can only have a internet connection, when the phone is logged in into a gsm or edge network.
as soon as wcdma is available, the phone disconnects from the internet.
the signal is always available, but it looses the internet connection when it changes to 3G mode.
when the phone changes from 2G->3G mode, i see for 1s the 3G icon and then no icon will bi there.
when it changes back from 3G->2G, the EDGE/GPRS icon is visible again.

ok thanks for clarification. My problem is different. I think related to phone company.. I still show the 3g signal and even have bars, but the pages dont load and eventually gives me the check your service and try again alert....
So Im hoping soon its working again for me... And I hope you as well figure it out.....
Thank you Good luck!
Had the same issue after update, did *#*#4636#*#* and noticed I was set to GSM only. Set it to WCDMA preferred and now it's good.

Thank you. Updated to FRF83 this morning and I've had a full 3g signal, just couldn't pull data all day. Could over edge. Sure enough, GSM only was selected.

I'm having the same issue on a non-rooted phone on T-Mobile. No 3G after the FRF83 update. Full bars of service and 3G displayed in the status bar. Dropping to Edge only works but there is no data with 3G.

I think it's a hardware problem with a lot of N1's.
Mine was ok the first 2 months, and later, 3g not working. This is driving me crazy ):
I have tried everything. Change the simcard, I did a reset of the data with my telcon, and nothing happens.
I've seen these problems on many N1's.
I hope google / htc release a fix for this problem.

how bout checking your bands in the service menu. so *#*#4636#*#* -> phone info -> press the menu key for more options -> select bands -> choose one appropriate for your region (ie "USA BANDS").
If all else fails do a factory reset by going to the settings -> privacy -> restore factory defaults.. of course do a backup/sync/whatever before just to make sure you can get all your apps back.
There's other ways to do a factory reset via the bootloader .. its under recovery and you press up volume or the trackball I think and you can just select all the clear/erase settings there and that should clear out everything on the phone's internal storage.
The factory reset worked for me (via bootloader) when I upped from update-1 to FRF50 and didn't have any data icon next to my signal strength. Could call out but couldn't get data.
Hope that helps.

Check your APN settings. Do a full factory reset from the bootloader. If nothing works you should call tech support again. Most 3g issues where you have issues with connecting are service/signal level related. I *****ed early about my 3g issues on tmobile and it was the network as they've pretty much gone away with improving the backhaul in my area for HSDPA+ or updates to the phone's radio.
HTC is really really really cool about swapping phones and repairing them. If you feel you have a nexus that has hardware issues call them. I did this 3 times already (one time for minor cosmetic issues with the refurb they sent) and I couldn't be happier about how willing they were to replace/repair the phone. It turns out I really didn't have any issues with them at all.. with any issues with hardware from the second refurbished phone. It was service or software related and I'm happy to say with updates/tmobile service improvements I couldn't be happier with this phone.

Thanks blisk, but the thing I don't understand is why Blackberry 9700 with T-Mobile bands, doesn't have problems at all ?
By the way, I rooted my phone , so the thing with the warranty it's complicated
I had it happen last night at work all night, but when i got home i checked my wife's tp2 and it also was doing the same thing so for levity wasn't the phone but tmobile. They started worming the same time also.... I think its tmobile.
Hello, I had the same problem with my imported n1. I'm using the tmobile version non rooted fully stock manually updated to frf83. I did a *#*#4636#*#* and selected wcdma only, rebooted and couldn't connect to my gsm network. Went in again and did a wcdma preferred, rebooted, and I works better, still changes fast to edge and G, but less often, I'm still trying it but I have high hopes its gonna be ok
Mmmm i did have problems with 3G too after pushing FRF83, but i found out that for some reason the APN settings weren't set correctly after the update. In my case the port setting after the proxy of the APN wasn't set, i changed to the correct value and it worked.
In conclusion, check your APN settings.
Just went from FRF72 to FRF83 and it's working fine.
I'm currently set to GSM auto (PRL) in the *#*#4636#*#* and I didn't change it to that after putting on FRF83.

Is it my phone or the network?

I'm having a hard time figuring out if i'm having a phone issue or is it a network issue that I need to get used to. Simple tasks such as navigation I can rarely get to work if i've already started moving. It will act as if searching for service for 2 or 3 minutes before it gets a lock and will begin navigating. I have had times with AT&T where I had little to 0 service and navigation would pick up fine, but with Sprint I see connection lost a lot more. Is this a Sprint thing or you think I got a bad phone?
I will have 3-4 bars of service on 3G and can stream music but refreshing something like Twitter can take several minutes or timeout completely. I live in Atlanta and have rarely seen 4G/LTE which I believe to be strange because Sprint's coverage map indicates they have strong coverage most of the places i've experienced the hiccups.
What do you guys think?
I think it's a phone issue. I have it as well. ...at least the "GPS lost" issue. Didn't have it with my note 2. I get fast GPS locks though.
No issue with data except for sprints typical slowness
Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk 2
I haven't had that issue but I don't live near anywhere as large a metropolitan area as Atlanta so that could be an issue. My GPS locks are nearly instant but I do have problems streaming music sometimes.

I would call Sprint Customer care and tell them you are having issues with data services and that you have heard of this issue. Have them verify your UUIC ID number under settings/about/Phone identity. This is also the same as the SIM ID. They may say oh thats for international only but what they don't know yet is that number must match on your account for all your data services to behave properly. I figured this out after 6 phone exchanges.....the phone was fine....it was that number that was messed up.
My symptoms where:
- Slow data
- Dropped calls
- Radio was always using EvDo rev. A (check in settings/about/network)
- Never on EHRPD (Required for 4g LTE handoff with the towers)
- 104 data errors (these still happen but much less and is because they are still building out the 4g network here)
I hope this helps and will fix your issues. It did for me.

[Q] HTC One signal drops

Hi all,
I have bought a Htc One M7 handset recently and I have noticed time to time there are No Signals (Limited Service) on it. When I switch off/ switch on or if I turn on the Airplane mode and turn off again, the signals will restore. This is happening around 2 times per day and really annoying. Need to know whether this is a known issue for the model.. I still didn't change the SIM and check. Please help!!!!!
Thanks alot!

Need to know whether this is a known issue for the model.. I still didn't change the SIM and check. Please help!!!!!
Thanks alot!

I have the same thing
To add some detail for diagnostics see below:
- I travel into London every day and sometimes when signal drops in the tunnels it will never pick back up again after leaving them whereas my old One X did not have this on the same journeys.
- It even dropped out mid call and came up with the sim card icon at the notification bar as if no card inserted (but no selectable notification) first time its happened to this extent.
- Do you have a 4G SIM/connection or are you on 3G like myself? I'm thinking perhaps its something to do with trying to pick up 4G instead and completely disregarding the 3G connection that is available.
- I have also noticed that ever since getting the handset its never had as good signal as my One X which was pretty much always full signal in my normal areas (home, work etc) This may just be the way the handset gauges the signal not the signal itself but something to note anyway.
I'm having the same issue here in the US. It's prolly my only complaint with my phone.

I'm also having this issue but more sever with an all-day no signal. After reboot, I gain signal and I can't make and receive calls.
Try to turn 4G off.

How does one do that? Having the same problem, both wifi AND mobile network drop off. Wifi comes back on its own after a few seconds, the mobile data connection often comes back (obviously if not on wifi away from home), but the mobile network stays as no signal and doesn't come back, unless I reboot or cycle aeroplane mode. I know there's some problems with touching antenna, but this is happening a lot in the car, when the phone is powered and sitting in a cradle.

To turn off 4G you go to Settings -> Mobile data -> Network mode and then select "3G / 2G"
don't know if it'll help though, but trying is worthwhile

Thanks. The problems seems to have gone with that change. Perhaps it is some system thing kicking me off the network because I don't have 4G on my contract and my phone was trying to get it.
Now, if you can just tell me why my lovely 3-4 bar indoors signal on EE has dropped to 0-1 outdoors (as they deny there is a problem)

Are you sure it's not just cosmetic? Try going into Settings->About->Network and see if the signal (dBm) is dropping.

I have it constantly on att - I have to turn on airplane mode and turn it back off to get my network back, I have tried different roms and updates and still the issue is across all roms.
Maybe try this: in your dialer type *#*#4636#*#*. Once the menu is opened, select Phone information, then scroll down to Set preffered network type and choose one of the options (im from Serbia, europe, and I usualy go with GSM auto (PRL)).
Issue with 3g only
Whenever I keep it on 3G, it drops signals for 2 to 7 seconds at random intervals. People often complain that when they call, they get a message that my phone is switched off.. I am probably gonna try another ROM and SIM to see if that helps before dumping this phone forever.
how to solve limited service or loosing service on htc one m7
Hello
it seems to be a hardware fault where the radio is not staying on higher band
it seems to be having issues on 2100 and all umts and hspda or lte networks
however switching back to 2 g can resolve this issue and phone ( hope so) will never lose signals or drop then again
i tried this and for me this works fine so far over 12 hours now no issue
give it a try and see this should work
setting>data>network>2g only
by this you wont have option to use fast internet though but at least you can phone can be used for voice calls messaging etc and also wifi too
I was on stock lolli pop and tried to flash cm12.1 but does not help sort the limited service issue
enjoy and leave your feedback
Edit:
some people cant find 2g in settins>mobile network>preferred network type> lte or 3g only, the solution is go to *#*#4636#*#* phone info>set preferred network type>gsm only( this will put your device into 2g mode)
hope this work
