Hello,
Sorry for the noob question, but I was wondering on how to keep root through this update. Do I just take the update? Or do I have to wait for another root from chainfire for the new update?
Thanks

If you try to take the ota while rooted it will fail so you can either unroot and do the ota and then reroot or if you have twrp theres a stock rooted rom in the development section you can flash on top of your stock rom that works just fine

Hi All,
Was just looking into the prospect of rooting and I came across a post that basically responded to a guy asking whether subsequent OTA/Official updates would revert the root. the response was:
this might well happen. To be sure that this won't happen, don't update, or wait for a rooted version of the update to be released

It's the bit in bold that's got me wondering. I have my Nexus running stock ROM but rooted (with locked bootloader). I have the problem with the WiFi which 2.2.1 claims to fix.....and I just wasting time thinking that this update might get released as a rooted version so I can just install and not worry about losing root?
Any help gratefully received.
Cheers
1. Already released as a rooted version (check the ROM section)
2. Really easy to root with rageagainsthtecage ...
Right I can ask you the question then......with the rageagainstthecage root method, is there anyway to install the update without flashing a new ROM...I'm ok with stock.
If you're rooted - install custom recovery and install pre-rooted ROM.
Or try to apply the stock update through stock recovery, if you have it.

Just install the OTA - it will unroot you.
then root with "rage"
check out modaco, he's got frg83 completely stock with root. just flash using custom recovery. I didnt do a wipe so everything stayed the same just updated to 2.2.1 and yes it seems the wifi issue was fixed.
Just get the stock rooted from geo411m's rom!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=559
The links here will also do it in 2 steps from custom recovery:
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8419658&postcount=194
The geo411m link is a deodexed ROM and the one in the link above is not deodexed. Either way you get the fixes of the newer version.
Going forward, think of it this way with future updates:
If you apply the OTA, intending to lose root and then re-root, you always run the risk that all avenues of rooting (other than unlocking the bootloader) have been closed by the new ROM.
If you apply an update repacked for custom recovery, you don't have to worry whether the root exploit you used last time will still be valid.

Thanks for that - honestly not sure why I didn't think of it
Ahh found a flaw in my plan.....it seems that verification fails on my Vodafone Nexus One (UK). I'm guessing there isn't an upgrade path from Vodafone's Froyo update to this yet. Suppose I'll have to wait for Voda's 2.2.1
Hey guys just wanna ask, is it possible to be Rooted but running fully stock with OTA updates? I just want to have root on my One without customizing it.. Simply Rooted and full Stock with OTA updates.. Thanks in Advance!

if im not mistaken once your bootloader is unlocked you cant receive OTAs anymore. At that point what you can do is manually flash the new OTA.
I'm not sure if its that simple though, I've never done it like that, just custom roms.

As long as you have stock everything, besides the root of course, you can sideload ota updates through adb. i sideloaded kitkat when it came out.
By stock I assume you are running a Sense One and not a legit GPE?
When you unlock the bootloader on Sense it wipes a few apk files (no clue why, seems idiotic) and thus OTA will be broken as the expected APK will not be present.
So you have to unlock bootloader. install recovery, flash super SU. then restore missing apk files and then flash back stock recovery. A bit of work but it can be done. here's a thread about it.

Thanks for the reply guys.. Yeah, it's a bit annoying why can't have ota after rooting. I just needed root and nothing else... Hmmm.. :banghead:

If you whether upgrade or downgrade your phone, you'll surely lose the root access
I suggest you use 133

You mean you rooted your phone by downgrading and upgrading method?
It's different from flashing
That roots your phone, but this empties your phone

Hi guys !
I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my device, and i don't know if i can upgrade my Nexus 6 by ota (received this morning on the phone) without brick it.
Is it dangerous?
Thank you
EDIT : I'm on stock Lollipop 5.0.1
Unlocked is fine. If you have root or any other system mods, you'll need to remove them.
Oh thanks for the quick answer
So if I unroot it with Nexus Root Toolkit it will be ok?

Nexus toolkit doesn't unroot. It reflashes the entire phone which also means root disappears. If you're going to do that, no point taking the ota. Just flash full update.
You can indoor via the SuperSU app.
Oh ok I just saw that.
So if I unroot via SuperSU it's ok i can install?

As long as you do the full unroot and made no other modifications. Oh and everything must be 100% stock, including recovery
I've installed TWRP...
So, what is the best way for me to install 5.1 without losing my data?

download the factory image that you want to update to.
extract the system.img, boot.img and radio.img
Fastboot flash them.
You could also flash the bootloader if you want though I dont see any point.
Ok, thank you for your quick answers
Hey XDA,
So I have a stock att s5 running android 4.4.2. Im trying to update to 5.0 using the stock recover and adb sideload, but it keeps throwing an error at me saying "protocol fault (no status)"
How would I go about fixing this error? do i need to update to 4.4.4 first?
thank!
Im on baseband version g900AUCU2AND3
Edit: could i possibly adb sideload the NCE to NG3 zip found in this thread and proceed from there?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...to-root-g900aucu2aoa1-4-4-4-2-3-2015-t3021120
or would it be easier to go to a best buy store and have one of those guys do it for me...
I ended up downgrading to NCE... working my way to there now >_>
moderators, do whatever you do to resolved threads.
You have to take the 4.4.4 incremental update B4 taking the 5.0 update. You can update it through recovery but have to download the file from the other thread about updating to 5.0 and change the name to update.zip. You MUST BE on 4.4.4 first though. Also, there is no root for 5.0 yet. If you want to stay rooted I would wait on taking that 5.0 update.

Yeah, I'm running though the updates now. I really want to hit something or someone right now. Im finally at 4.4.4
Yeah it takes a while to do all those updates but all worthwhile if we get to keep the root. Are you on rooted 4.4.4 now or are you staying stock? I'm on rooted 4.4.4 and NOT updating to 5.0 till I know it can be rooted. If it never gets rooted,I guess I'll never take it. I like my root too much.
