[Q] HTC One m7 Charging but not recognized by computer - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HTC One m7 4.4.3
Hello,
HTC one m7 when connected to computer, nothing happens. it only starts charging. computer doesn't detect phone. I have read every single thread regarding this issue and tried all suggestions including:
- different original usb cables were used
- HTC drivers installed . multiple versions
- HTC Sync Manager installed from HTC website . multiple versions
- different cables were used, different ports, different computers
- factory reset has been made, and wipe cache as well
- started in safe mode
- checked usb debugging and unchecked it
I tried another HTC one (NOT updated to 4.4.3) and it worked fine.
I sent emails to HTC Support and they didn't reply. I used the online chat in the HTC website and the person was talking doesn't even know what USB debugging is .
My question is: Could it be a hardware problem although the usb port is working for charging? if not, what else should I do?
Thanks

Yes it could be (and probably is) hardware related even if its charging correctly. Usb port have 5 contacts: +5 Vcc, Data+, Data-, ID/sense and Ground
If Data+ or Data- contacts are defective, the computer won't be able to "speak" with the device. Power will however be connected to charge it via pin 1 and 5 (+5 Vcc and Ground).
Pin #4 (ID/Sense) is a floating contact, only used to determine what is connected to the device (Charging dock, OTG, car dock) and if the phone must act like an Host or like a Slave device.
You should try to clean your usb port using isopropyl alcohol or some electro-contact cleaner.

I am having the same issue, but I think it has to do with installing a rom, and not first updating the firmware. I restored to original 4.4.2 through twrp but it did not fix the firmware issue. I am wondering how can i update the device firmware without usb?

[Q] HTC One No USB Mode

Something happened to my HTC One. It no longer shows up on the PC when hooked up via USB.
I have tried resetting the phone, factory wipe, installing different ROMs, and switching on and off the developer mode. No luck.
The phone still charges from the wall charger... but will not show up as a drive at all.
Is it a hardware problem which requires service or is it a software problem which can be restored?

In the notifications window on the phone, does it say USB or MTP connected? It might be a driver problem on your PC

Nope. No notification on the phone. There used to be one showing when USSB is connected.
I've tried on a number of PCs with no luck. I installed the HTC Sync application as well.
When I plug it into the machine with the HTC Sync software, the HTC Sync software launches but says no phone is connected.
The phone used to show up as a device in Explorer... Not sure how to get it to do that again.

Are you using the USB cable that came with the phone?
mine did that, had to get it repaired, luckily Vodafone AU do service swaps so only had to walk to a store and say its broken.

Yes. I have tried with the official cable along with others.
I mean, it is a USB cable though. There is nothing special about it... just like there is nothing special about a Monster Cable HDMI either. Just a cable.

Check you have the htc drivers installed correctly.
There are some USB cables that are charging only.... Anyways, I think it may be a hardware issue
I had to have new mainboard on mine .

[Q] USB 3.0 mode not working

When I plug my N3 into a USB 3.0 port on my Windows 7 PC (using the cable that came with the phone), it works fine until I select the phone option to use USB 3.0 mode. At that point, my PC stops recognizing the phone (it disappears from Windows Explorer). Has anyone else had this problem, and does anyone know of a solution?
I had this happen to me earlier- I had to plug it into a different USB port while it was still in USB 3.0 mode. For some reason, sometimes when I switch it, it fails to enumerate the device ID. If you quickly plug it into a different USB 3.0 port, it will work. At least for me. YMMV!

Thanks, but that doesn't work for me.
Here's what happens, in more detail. I plug the phone into a front-panel USB 3.0 port. My PC's Windows Explorer then shows the phone as a Portable Media Player, and the phone says "Connected as a media device. Tap for UDB 3.0 and other options". I tap and then set the checkbox for "Media device (USB 3.0), selecting "Use USB 3.0". At that point, the phone immediately vanishes from Windows Explorer, and the USB "Connected as Media Device" notification also vanishes.
In contrast, when I plug the phone into a rear-panel USB 3.0 port, it never connects at all. It does vibrate briefly to show it knows it was plugged in. But neither the PC nor the phone itself gives any other indication of the connection.
Update: I found a different (Intel) rear USB 3.0 port that works. Apparently it's just finicky about what port to connect to. (All drivers on my PC are up-to-date, though.) I haven't tried any file transfers yet, but the phone notification says "Connected as USB 3.0 Media Device", and the PC Windows Explorer shows the phone and can list its files.

This is what happened to me when I plugged in to my front 3.0 port the phone would have the charging icon at the top but would not show connected to USB 3.0 port not pull down menu just showed charging if I put into 2.0 ports USB notification pops right up. So I thought my phone was bad and exchanged it and the same thing happened. So I then turned to the PC I went to my laptop which is a Dell with Intel chipset and i7 plug it in and it was recognized right away pull down menu and 3.0 option showed. So off to the store I went while I was there talked to one of the techs and he told me that ASMedia 3.0 controller on the boards where having problems Intel and AMD now I was on track as I have a AMD Sabertooth 990fx board so I did two thing I picked up a M5A99fx Pro 2.0 and a I/O PCI Express 3.0 card one I got had a different controller than AsMedia on it and got lucky and found one that also had a 20 pin port on the card so I could plug my front port cord to the card and it would give me access to the front ports on my tower. I installed the new mother board and the same thing happened then I put the PCI Express card in and hooked my 20 pin cord up and now I have usb 3.0 on the front but the board's ports still won't work with the phone also I tested other flash drives and USB 3.0 drives and it seems that what the tech said is true with my setup AsMedia is have problems with their controller! The PCI Express card is the Vantec one UGT-PC345 and it has then Renesas USB 3.0 Controller on it. I have since went back to my Sabertooth board and returned the M5A99fx my board is just fine just had to ad the card to get 3.0.
Well in my case the third option just doesn't exist its not grayed out its just not they're so I wonder if its a att deal can some one let me know
I dont know if its related but the issue i have is that when i tap the usb 3.0 option, my phone connects and disconnects over and over about 5 times at whic point it goes back to MTP.
Also, i forgot to add... when it stops all the connecting and disconnecting, i get the message that no software was found. I installed Kies, but its the same thing. This is windows 8.

Only what I mentioned in the update above--it worked to use a different USB 3.0 port on the same PC. The port that didn't work has a different controller, so there may be a driver problem. But I stopped investigating as soon as I found a port that worked.
ok , I have tried both in put and not working

How about a little more info on what your system is. Especially motherboard manufacturer. It seems what ive found in my searching is that most people who are having this issue share one major thing in common and thats the the board manufacturer is ASUS. Im not saying all of them, but most. With that being said im also willing to bet that most problems are on the same USB chip manufacturer. Asmedia chips seem to have the issue. I have 3 towers all with different ASUS boards but all have Asmedia controllers and they all have the same problem. However, if i plug it into my wifes laptop with an intel USB 3 controller, it works perfect.
I have done firmware upgrades, changed BIOS settings, even a reinstall on all 3 systems of the whole OS and in the end i got the same result. The only thing ive been able to get work is if i install ASUS' USB Boost software, my phone will now show its working on 3.0 but only from the rear ports. That being said, if i let it sit at idle for more than about 15-20 minutes, it automatically goes back to USB 2. I dont know if thats intended or if im still having issues.
So, any extra info you can supply might help get a better response. OS, MB manufacturer, controller manufacturer, all of those things will help.
I'm almost 100% certain that BC 1.1 is enabled on your computer. It's extremely common with ASUS boards. It is on other boards as well. Find out how you can disable it from the manufacturer and it will work.

Possibly. But I don't have BC 1.1 enabled on mine, and I have the same problem on my non-Intel USB 3.0 ports (but the Intel ones work).

Thank you. This is the issue I had. I have an Asus motherboard, and I did have Ai Charger+ enabled, that supposedly charges BC 1.1 devices 3x faster.
So for anyone who has AI Suite installed, open it up from the system tray, go to Tool, then Ai Charger+, and make sure it's disabled.
I just re-tried the USB 3.0 port on my PC that previously didn't connect to my N3 in USB 3.0 mode, and it now does. I don't know when or how it got fixed. The hardware is still the same and I haven't manually changed anything on my PC or N3 that would be relevant, so either the PC or the N3 must have received some intervening update that repaired the problem.

An incompatible update for the Texas Instruments XHCI controller was delivered through Microsoft Windows Update. If your computer received this update, use the following steps to roll the controller driver back to the previous version:
Click Start , enter device manager into the search field, and click Device Manager from the results.
In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the list.
Right-click Texas Instruments XHCI Controller and select Properties . If Texas Instruments XHCI Controller is not listed, then this step will not fix the problem. Find and use another section on this page.

Thanks, but as just mentioned, my problem already fixed itself. Also, my PC doesn't have the TI XHCI controller. Also, the warning you quote is from more than a year ago, so it is very unlikely to still be applicable.

[Q] USB not recognised in windows

Hi
Can anyone help me please.....?
I recently updated my HTC ONE M7 to lollipop and since then my PC cannot recognise the phone.
I have tried a variety of USB cables but still nothing.
I have also tried different PC's to resolve this issue.... still nothing.
The phone charges ok ... so no issues on the charging side.
One more question...... from the phones system menu where can I control or setup what happens when using a USB Cable, connecting to a PC ?
Orginally, the phone was set up as Storage device but now i get nothing.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

[Q] What to do when I can't see my HTC One in Device Manager?

Like in the topic. My pc can't seem to notice my HTC one phone. Not at all.
Some details:
PC - Laptop Lenovo Y580
Operating system - Windows 8.1 64 bit
Android - 5.0.2 I think (Lollipop)
My phone notices the cable (asks for internet tethering etc.) but I don't see it anywhere in pc's Device Manager (neither does HTC Sync Manager).
I've tried numerous things. I installed HTC Sync Manager, I've installed HTC drivers separately, reinstalled generic USB driver and drivers for USB 3.0, changed cable, changed port to another USB 2.0, change to USB 3.0, checked if it works on friend's pc (nope), reinstalled almost any of above mentioned things witt antivirus disabled, with firewall disabled, with almost anything that can be disabled. Nothing. It's not that case of wrong driver. My pc don't see this phone at all.
To be honest I'm tired. Like really tired. I've spent all free time I could find last week trying to somehow make it work. With no effect whatsoever. I don't see even slice of progress (noticing SOMETHING in device manager would be nice). I would love to see some way to analise this. I'm getting closer and closer to just buying new phone. Even though I don't want one, but I can't do any testing with this device.
EDIT: Few things I've remembered about my tries: I've tried both USB debugging on and off, and I've also already done factor reset of the phone - to no effect obviously.
When connected to pc, phone can be charged, but PC doesn't react in any way (no "USB connected", popping up HTC Sync Manager or "Media device connected" info).
I'll appreciate any help. Especially if it manages to change something in my situation.
Best regards,
Hisuu

When you plug in your phone to the computer do you get the following:
USB Connected
HTC Sync Manager
Media device [MTP] connected
Can you charge your phone while connected to the computer or do you have to use the wall charger to charge your phone? If you don't see the programs listed above, it sounds like a hardware issue with the USB port on your phone.

Yes, I can charge phone when connected to PC.
And as I mentioned phone actually notices it's connected to something, and asks what mode to enter (USB tethering, smart network sharing etc.). But it also seems... kinda dodgy. Sometimes phone doesn't react, I have to reconnect or even restart it. Sometimes "USB connected, Tap to change settings" stays... even after I have already disconnected it .
Few things I've remembered about my tries: I've tried both USB debugging on and off, and I've also already done factor reset of the phone - to no effect obviously. (I'll add this info to 1st post to gather info in one place).
Any other ideas?
This topic is my last resort, because I'm out of ideas and start leaning to buying new phone just for testing purposes (either Samsung Galaxy S3 or Nexus4 I guess).

start from scratch: Uninstall HTC sync and all the drivers you have tried. Then install HTC drivers only (not the generic drivers) or install HTC sync and uninstall it but keep the drivers installed (the idea is to have the driver installed but not HTC Sync, we don't want Sync to interact with the phone).
Try another USB cable but make sure its Data enabled (not only a charging cable). Some cheap cables are for charging only, no data connection.
Try another USB port, use 2.0 usb ports, do not use any external usb hub, use th eport directly on your motherboard (at the back of your computer).
Try with another computer
Clean your phone usb port using a cotton swab with some isotropic alcohol and then apply (spray) a light coat of electrical enhancer on your usb port (see your local electronic supplier or even some hardware stores)

Tried other cables (data enabled, they were from different phones), as well as different USB ports (both 2.0 and 3.0). Also tried another pc (no luck).
Uninstalled HTC Sync and drivers so many times I can't count it ;]
I'll try to clean the port and maybe use motherboard on friend's pc (on his machine I've only used front panel). Hopefully something works. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

Thanks for the update.
Go into Step 7, with the device connected, and install the drivers manually.
So, in this scenario, you'll right click on the device and browse to the location where you downloaded the drivers.
I need to know what happens if you try and install them manually.

Hi, I can't actually do step 7 because it doesn't recognizes the phone as an Android device like in the guide, but as an:
Unknown USB Device (Error Device Descriptor Request Failed) see attached screenshot.
Even when I select this Unknown USB Device and tried to update de driver manually, the installation fails. (see attached screenshot) .
I've changed cables and tried on different ports of different PCs. Same result. Also by entering Developer Options and accessing the USB settings won't work, there are all greyed out.

Thank you for your efforts and feedback.
Based on the details, I would strongly suggest you initiate a return. You've taken all the appropriate steps, and then some, to address the problem but it's obvious the issue exists with the device hardware.
I am happy to provide further instructions but what concerns me is the fact you've tried multiple PCs and multiple cables.

If your phone was in warranty you should have returned it, changing the USB port was your final option. Now you should take it to a service center. Good luck,

I waited 3 months for my USB port replacement and it did the same thing, now I'm waiting for the flex connector, if that doesn't work either, then its a problem with the motherboard.
I ended up replacing the entire phone and a few months later this phone now has the same issue.. this is horrible. Especially with no USA support from Xiaomi. Its a "deal with it" situation.
But i believe the use of crappy chargers, debris getting into port, maybe Qualcomm quick charge modules design flaw could be sending unsafe currents or lacking proper temp regulation when charging,, is damaging something on the main board. I checked every possible software related possibility and tried every fix with no luck.
What i did notice when it happened this time, chargers were not staying connected, they would pop out due to debris in the charging port, also i noticed my phone got pretty hot using a Qualcomm QC enabled charger one night. Nothing else was suspected of generating heat, all apps closed, screen had been off.
I everyone... Where i can buy an usb port?? My A2 is not charging, trying at least 4 different cables and chargers,
Tks
