Hi All,
What are the image files I need to flash in order to go back stock?
Device is rooted, Stock 4.4.4.
Kernel and recovery is not stock.

Your signature says you have a Dev Edition XT1053.
So to return to stock, get the recovery images from Moto's own web site -> https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images
You can follow the steps to flash too.. I would just skip the "fastboot oem lock" step. There is no reason to relock your bootloader.

The files are hosted on Moto's "Google Drive" and when you request to download it, it takes some time for you to be granted access.
I've had it take anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 days.
Each time mine came with a FROM that reads....

so make sure this doesn't go to your spam folder!!

Success - 2 days after the request. Dowloaded the .tzg file and decompressed (and then decompressed the tar file) and fastbooted. Back to stock.

I have a Verizon Moto X Developer Edition. I upgraded to 4.4 but have since reverted to 4.2.2. However, as soon as i turn my phone on MotorolaOTA starts downloading 4.4 again. I need root so that Titanium Backup can freeze the OTA and keep me where i want to be in 4.2.2.
For the life of me I can't figure out how to root this effing device. I started trying to figure out RockMyMoto but could never get the IP address of my phone. adb devices shows my phone but adb shell getprop dhcp.wlan0.ipaddress returns nothing. Anyway, after searching around I found that TWRP might be a better/easier option for me given I have a Dev Edition phone. I think the bootloader needs to be unlocked before i can do this but all the threads I'm finding are referencing 4.4 and TWRP not 4.2.2.
Would someone please tell me what my best option is to gain root and could you share the thread link to instructions?
Why would adb not return an ip address?
thanks in advance for the help. i'm obviously not a tech genius just need a little hand holding to make sure what i'm doing to my phone is the "right" thing to do lest i brick it.
thanks.

This is what you want to do with a DE. It's the easiest way to get root, period. TWRP will prompt you when you exit to install SU, you say yes, update it in the play store and you're done.
Why do so many people buy the dev edition yet have no clue what to do with it?

I find it preferable to those who don't buy the DE and then ask when someone is going to unlock the bootloader.
Honestly, unless you've had a nexus device, you're probably used to having to jump through some hoops to get a phone unlocked and rooted. Combine that with most of the information on the forum being about rooting the locked version, I can see how it can be confusing.
i guess i'm just a raging idiot.
i got my unlock code from moto but i can't figure out step 5 of https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-c ....change the directory? i changed to the folder where the tools are but $ fastboot oem unlock UNIQUE_KEY (+my key) doesn't do anything i get some sytax telling me i'm stupid. i tried doing this with minimal adb and fastboot app and got an "okay" but my device didn't unlock.
driving me crazy. i've rooted razr m, inc2 and haven't had this many problems and this is suppose to be easier? lol
even once i get the damn thing unlocked i fear getting the twrp img to the device...i'm sure that will be a joy too.

While we wait for real root for 4.4.2...in the meantime, I wouldn't mind having root with write protection upon reboot. Could someone walk me through the process for that? I'm more than happy to reapply any changes when the phone is rebooted (which won't be too often, hopefully)
If you're already on 4.4.2....you can't root. Can't downgrade to do the safe strap method.
If you are on 4.2.2 or 4.4....then read the safe strap thread. Also there's a couple ROMs now that apparently root and disable write protection. But again, if you are already on 4.4.2....you can't do it.
I saw it mentioned in a thread that root could exist but with write protection. Is that not true?

But already being on 4.4.2.....can't root now.
This is kinda weird. I was talking to Motorola via the help app and the representative was adamant in telling me that I am able to unlock my bootloader on the Verizon version. I even said that xda developers say it cannot be unlocked but he told me it was possible and to try it. He linked me here:

Has anyone tried this?

I think the rep told you wrong. According to this link (found on the page that you linked under the "Find Your Device" section) https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/87215, it only works with the Verizon Dev Edition. You can give it a go, but it will probably reject the attempt. If Verizon has changed their policy (highly doubtful) a lot of people would be extremely happy. Anyway, give it a shot. The worst that can happen is that it tells you that your device doesn't qualify.
Yeah, I even sent him that page saying that only the sprint, t-mobile and US Cellular versions can be unlocked. But I'll try this tomorrow. Anyone else can feel free to do so as well in the meantime.

Correct.
If you were on 4.4, you could root and disable write protection. When you took the 4.4.2 OTA, write protection became re-enabled, but you kept root. Of course this meant any changes/installs/etc made to /system and the like since taking 4.4.2 would be lost at power off/on.
Once 4.4.2 is on your phone, you can't root, and you can't disable write protection, unless you have a developer edition, or a carrier edition like Sprint, T-Mobile, etc that Moto gives out the bootloader unlock codes on their web site for. Once you unlock the bootloader you can root and write protection is disabled, and this can be done no matter what rom is on the phone.
The bounty to unlock the bootloader for VZW/ATT (who can't get codes from moto's web site), has continued to grow. No one has found a way. Same with some older Moto's too. Same with the updated GS4 and GS5, and so on.... So the chances of seeing a bootloader unlock hack are fading. Root exploits seem to get patched with each new ROM update (to root 4.4, you had to downgrade and root 4.2.2), so that is getting harder.
To be realistic, the only way to ensure you can have root and write protection disabled is to buy a Developer Edition, or from a carrier that allows you to unlock the bootloader. Yup it can cost more, and you can't customize its look, but its a small trade off if you *NEED* working root no matter what rom comes on your phone. Its a trade off I had to make, but it was easier when I did it as I was paying full price (to keep my unlimited data), and the Dev Edition was the only 32gig option for Verizon at the time.

As @HeroOfTime has said, unless Moto has reversed their course of action, Verizon and ATT non-developer phones can not receive an unlock code via Moto's web site.
That is why there was such a big "to do" about the Chinese site that was selling codes not too long ago. (which has been shut down).
Once you try it. Please let us know. There are MANY who would be very happy if Moto has changed things!!
Well, I tried and got the expected error telling me that my device wasn't eligible. Guess that Motorola rep didn't know what she was talking about. I talked to someone else and they basically confirmed it, saying you can only do it on the Dev Edition on Verizon. :\

I've been searching for an answer to my problem and this is the best thread I have seen but....I'm a little confused. Here is what I did:
Bought a BOOST Mobile MOTO-G.
I unlocked the bootloader. I can be done on this device.
I flashed CWM from recovery. It worked fine.
From recovery, I flashed the VERIZON 4.4.2 image.
Booted the phone, activated it on PagePlus.
Went back to recovery, flashed SUPERSU. It worked....no errors.
Root checkers say I have root. I cannot use anything that needs root such as Titanium.
I connected the phone and did :
adb shell
getprop ro.boot.write_protect
It returned a 0 (zero)
Does this make sense? I just would like someone to confirm it does. Reading this thread has helped but it is the ZERO write protect thing that is throwing me.
Thanks in advance.
I've had the phone since launch and have been waiting for a root method to surface that does not require rolling back to 4.2.2. Would something like this be possible?

All you need to know.
I thought this was the easiest guide and it includes the files you need http://www.elementalxdesigns.com/ec...our-Moto-X-Developer-Edition-and-install-TWRP
After you unlock follow the steps to install TWRP. When you reboot you'll be rooted.
Thanks everyone! Like I said before sorry for the stupid question I finally have the time to get back into the rooting stuff. Unlocked the bootloader via Moto's site and it bricked my phone lol. Pretty ironic the one time I brick a device is going the OEM's route to unlock. So learned a lot unbricking it. All rooted now and back to stock recovery. Thanks for the replies and resources. ☺
@Bg8780
The link supplied by @Restola is a very complete and newbie friendly set of instructions, including directing you to Moto's web site to obtain the unique unlock code needed for your phone. The included mfastboot is a little older, as are the Moto Device Drivers, and ADB. Consider viewing -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/ADB.htm to get them.
And a TIP if you use the instruction's Method B of booting into fastboot/booloader mode, you need to make sure your phone is not plugged into anything until after you see the Fastboot AP screen on your phone.
Additionally, after completing the install of TWRP, it doesn't have you reboot into it (NEEDED!!), and actually rooting (via installing SuperSU or having TWRP itself root you).
You can also use the thread @KJ linked, it has two has 2 sections you need to expand... "How To Unlock Your Bootloader" which talks to you about what is needed and getting the code from Moto's web site, and "Rooting Unlocked Bootloader" which talks you through the process to root. It contains LINKS of up to date files that will work with 4.4 and 4.4.2. However the TWRP from -> http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/ghost came out after those instructions were posted.
EDIT: Never mind, I see you're already done... I'll just leave this here anyway in case someone else comes a long...

Yep all done now but thanks KidJoe, your comment doesn't go unappreciated.
I've done a lot of searching but have come across different ways to do the same thing and am not sure what makes the most sense for me.
Thanks in advance for anyone willing to take a minute to point me in the right direction:
Just got my (1st gen) Moto X Developer Edition on Verizon.
I want to:
(1) Root
(2) Enable native hotspot
(3) Disable write protection (so Adobe flash APK will stick through reboot, etc.)
(4) Disable (or enable again, if I want to) OTA updates
Looking to keep phone as bloat free as possible.
Again, anyone willing to point me in the right direction, many thanks to you.
1. Is your bootloader unlocked?
2. If so, follow the guides to root. If not, follow the guide to unlock your bootloader.
3. Unlocking the bootloader disables write protection.
4. Once rooted, freeze MotoOTA.
5. Either install Xposed and install Moto Tether or flash the entitlement bypass.

For 1 and 3.
For ALL Developer Editions Moto X, and some carrier editions (Like T-Mobile, Sprint, Rogers and others), Motorola freely gives away the BootLoader Unlock codes when requested On Motorola's Web SIte. In the case of the Non-Developer Editions, it voids their warranty to request the code. However, for some carriers (like ATT, non-DE Verizon and republic Wireless in the USA) motorola does not give out the unlock code.
So when you get your X, get the unlock code from Moto's web site and follow the instructions to unlock. That will disable write protection.
After have an UNLocked boot loader, you may root by following -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/instructions-unlocking-rooting-dev-ed-t2649738 Please be sure to use the latest TWRP fastboot IMG file and Installable ZIP of SuperSU
#4 use a root capable file explorer. To rename 3C_OTA.apk and 3c_ota.odex. They are found in /system/priv-app. (Don't delete them because you'll need them for the next OTA)
#3. See -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/xt-1060-native-tether-4-4-4-unlocked-t2900368 there are 3 options in there and I have my explanation of what I use and why in that thread.
Thanks, gents, very much!
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I already unlocked the bootloader but I really appreciate pointing me in the right direction on the other stuff!
I've done this on my Razr M and Ultra Maxx prior but am new to the Moto X.
Hopefully I can take it from here.
Thanks again!
for #2, this method worked well for me... quick and painless
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/themes-apps/app-hotspot-entitlement-bypass-v1-1-5-9-t2705152
just make sure you are rooted with supersu or something
if you dont want an extra app (which slightly bothers me)
this also works: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/themes-apps/mod-native-android-tether-t2657265
just make sure to do it in recovery, and chmod 644 to get your permissions right.
So here we have stock files pulled from the Motorola Firmware Team on AFH Just mirrored for your convenience
I cant include the firmware for Verizon & Att due to the fact there bootloaders are NOT unlocked. Therefore if somebody reads this and corrects me, they cant flash it.

Question, is there a way to make the bootloader not say you've unlocked and flashed different software?
Also, can I just flash the stock boot?
anyone got stock boot img for t-mobile? if so can you send me a link please
Does anyone know if I can run the fasboot command to lock the bootloader after I've flashed this? I need to take mine back in for an exchange.

Yeah, I know the command. I was just wondering if that was all it takes and if it worked. Sorry my question was so vague.

It half-worked for me. During boot-up, it doesn't give me the "unlocked bootloader" warning, but it *does* give me a "The OS installed is different" message. Looks similar, but the text is yellow instead of orange.

I'm trying to get rid of the "your device has loaded a difference operating system". Did you find the way to get the phone back to 100% stock?
First off, wanna give a HUGE THANKS to joemossjr for releasing this package AND for that .bat installer! Long story short, I was about to either claim warranty or Jump! (T-Mobile insurance/upgrade program) due to me trying to hook a USB Thumbdrive in over USB OTG (Kingston 16GB) and then there were slowdowns and app crashes, everywhere... heck it was to the point where I kept getting spammed with android.process.acore keeps crashing messages! Couldn't use many internet apps, no phone calls, and could barely text just to name a few.
I do got a suggestion though: is it possible to have a modified version of the June ROM package on Sprint & T-Mobile to where instead of having the stock boot.img, you can have the modified version with the Magisk root access? That would be great and somewhat of a convenience (YMMV; I used this patched boot.img on the 26.2 version and both system updates & t-mobile visual voicemail setup kept falling flat on its face everytime)
Thanks again, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!
