With the ability to cast our devices, is rooting needed? - Google Chromecast

Now that casting your devices display is much easier and will only get better, is there any reason to root?
I was originally bummed that my CC updated before I had a chance to see if it could be rooted. I totally dropped the ball there. Anyway, I can cast my Android device(s) display to my TV with zero lag. I have no noticeable lag.
I know rooting is great so you could use apps that were not whitelisted but it seems soon there will be no practical reason to root a CC since whitelisted or not is not relevant now.

Cons of a rooted NC?

I'm on the edge of pulling the trigger for a NC. Since the NC was never intended to be a full fledge tablet I'm sure there are some annoyances from you rooted users. Once you get everything setup what are the cons? I have a rooted Samsung Vibrant running ClockWork on Team Whiskey, Nero ROM. What I'm reading I don't think I will go to Froyo since it is definitely usable but I get annoyed by such things like having to turn on/off screen to fix screen lag. I will most likely just keep it rooted from stock. The reason I'm interested in it is:
Lightweight, small form factor
Great resolution
Of course price.
I have two gripes:
1. No physical back button
2. Adhoc wifi requires turning on/off wifi
Both of these are hardware issues and not related to rooting.
I don't use the in-store feature so not having that doesn't bother me.
Do it, you can always unroot.
Magically transmitted across the interwebs by my kickass NookColor!
Just want to clarify, don't have a NC yet. Don't want to buy it as an ereader.

I don't know that the lack of physical back button bothers me, it has a built in gesture for back (swipe to the left on the menu bar) so it's not really a limitation, more a preference thing. The only real downside I've seen is lack of in-store features. There are some issues with the root, mainly some market issues where for some reason all of the programs don't show up. I used the NC for a couple of weeks in stock form and then decided to root, definitely worth it just for the sake of getting a browser with multi-touch enabled. However, I read a lot so that factors into how much I like it.
If you're just using it as an android tablet, it's really good. No GPS, no cameras, no 3g connection, but other than that it's fast with the best screen I've seen on a tablet and is just the right size. My phone has a 5mpx camera, 720p video and GPS and I have it on me all the time, so no need for any of that in a tablet. It also acts as a hotspot, so no need for 3g on the tablet. It's a perfect compliment to a decent smartphone.
If you love to tinker there's no cons. (and if you want a back button, Autonooter comes with Soft Keys that'll put one on the screen for you)
Despite the time it took to learn how to do it, and what to do with it afterwards, I got what I paid for and more. I love to learn and troubleshoot, so rooting this device has been a real treat.
At the moment I have a fully functional tablet that I use quite often around the house and at work. It's a convenient browser (I use Opera Mobile which has pinch zoom and slightly better page rendering than the build in browser), a quick source of the news thanks to a program included in the Autonooter kit, and a useful quick-note taking device.
I'll admit, my primary use for it is browsing, but when you root this thing, you can use any browser you want. I use Opera, but Skyfire and Dolphin HD are also good.
In addition to that, it makes a great portable movie player. The built in player supports MP4 and one other format, but if you root it, you can download Rock Player and play most commonly used video formats.
It's Youtube performance is excellent too, and there's quite a few Youtube video downloaders available in case you want to save your favorites to the SDCard.
Speaking of that, you will want to buy an SDCard. It doesn't come with one, and you might want more than the 5GB free of space you get out of the box.
All in all, it's pretty much a computer, and once you learn how to do everything to liberate it from it's shackles, there's no limit to what you can do with it.
As a tablet, it is awesome, and only getting more so. Lets be real - its GPU is the same as the Droid X, and is not the most perful on the market. Tegra 2 (and one or two others) will soundly beat it, but at a price. Cheaper T2 platforms tend (so far) to have horrible screens, poor battery life, and are large. Other devices like the Tab, just are way over priced.
I think the nook has struck an excellent ballance. It has an excellent CPU, a capable GPU, plenty of ram, and one of the best looking screens out there. I love its form factor (the bezel is one of few NON ugly ones out there), handling, and capabilities, and the price is excellent ($250).
It is also really getting a community behind it, and i think we will see in the near future, many more custom ROMS which speed things up, add features (bluetooth), and generally improve user experience. Right now is an exciting time to be a nook owner..
If you are not planning on reading you MUST buy a memory card. Many android apps are hard coded to look in /sdcard for things and can't read or write to the internal memory on the nook. Google earth is one example. This could probably be fixed by a developer in a custom rom.

That was one of my main reasons for choosing it over the Archos 70. I think the fact that the NC provides such great bang for the buck and is available at retail outlets across the USA gives it the potential to have a much larger following than something like the A70.
Adding bluetooth functionality will complete this thing.
The only con I've really felt was no mic :/ there slapped in crappy 10 dollar mp3s but not a eReader for memos/notes (tho its not useful) I could see voice search for books valuable.
Obviously want it for Voip not memos, Bt will be a fix but still.

Ditto to above. The lack of a Back button can be worked around, and really only comes into play while in certain apps that don't show the standard Nook status bar at the bottom. So you can't swipe. Using SoftKeys, and setup the right way, (see forum for more info on that), then you can change the Nook button to launch SoftKeys, which gives you the Back button, and also, as a bonus, a Task Switcher pops up at the same time.
The only drawback I see is that in order to have decent sized icons and text, you need to change the density of the screen. This is fine for everything except the built in Nook apps, like the Store and what-not. The reader itself is fine. It just cuts off some of the text, but it's still usable. Personally, I just use the Kindle app, anyway, and don't ever launch the Nook apps, so it's a non-issue for me.
EDIT: I also dearly want Bluetooth to work, so I can use my GPS and BT headphones. But at least there's a BT radio in the thing. Just need to get one of the wizards to get it working. Last I heard, it was working, but only to two feet. Give me 3 feet and I'll be happy. The lack of Flash is a real bummer, of course, but also to be fixed in an upcoming 2.2 release from B&N, or you could go and install 2.2 right now and boot from sd card. Apparently, it's working pretty well. And, the lack of a mic is a small bummer, but I'm also hoping a wizard will write a USB driver that will work with a webcam/mic. All do-able stuff. Just a little time needed.
As a tablet its great. It has shortcomings like others have said but you have to take into consideration that this hardware with an IPS screen for $250 is an absolute steal even considering those shortcomings.
I am a long-time Kindle user who recently got into the world of Android with my first smartphone purchase (HTC Aria). I have really fallen in love with Android, in large part due to the excellent community here at XDA. I had started looking for an Android Tablet and stumbled across all of the info about the Nook, after a week or two of research, I decided to just go for it. I figured if I bought it at Walmart, I would have at least 30 days to decide if I wanted to keep it... and even if I bricked it somehow, I don't think Walmart customer service would know the difference and would still refund my purchase. Well, I bought the Nook Wednesday morning, rooted immediately and ended up selling my Kindle Thursday night to a co-worker. This is the real deal and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an e-reader and tablet device, as long as they enjoy modifying it.
P.S. I haven't figured out why everyone feels the need to change the LCD density settings... everything looks great stock to my eye.

Just curious, what are you using ad-hoc wireless for? I use my android phone as a wireless hot-spot to provide internet to my Nook all night at work, that works fine, but I'm guessing that's not really ad-hoc or what you were referring to anyway.
I dont care for bluetooth, gps, or webcam. It doesnt bother me that flash doesnt work. I have flash on my phone and frankly, flash just makes webite load longer and most flash is just ads. It was an ok device preroot, now its a cheap capable tablet. I use it more than my pc. The only major gripe i have is that the edges of the screen seems to not register as well as the middle. But its not a dealbreaker.
Thanks guys. Just got one and its great! I was a bit skeptical at first after seeing before the root. Good info!

The issue with Ad-Hoc is that some devices can not connect to Ad-Hoc networks. They can only connect to Infrastructure mode WiFi networks.
So the problem presents itself when a rooted phone using a wireless tether app is only capable of sharing WiFi via a Ad-Hoc network (Motorola Droid). The Nook Color then can not see the Ad-Hoc network and is unable to connect.
So the Ad-Hoc WiFi fix allows the Nook Color to see and connect to Ad-Hoc networks as well as Infrastructure networks.
If you have a newer phone, like the Droid X, I believe those phones transmit WiFi via Infrastructure mode, so there is no problem connecting any device to it as all devices work with infrastructure mode.
I hope that all makes sense.
Yep, that explains it. I wasn't aware that older phones were using adhoc wifi. Is that a hardware limitation or a ROM limitation?

Hardware and software limitation, actually.
Most phones don't have a wifi chip capable of creating a true infrastructure-mode access point, but that is gradually changing. One of the reasons I bought an HTC Incredible is that it can.
But you also need tethering software that can use that mode. Newer versions of Wifi Tether can, for example, but older ones can't.

Living Without Root

First, I'm just in shock t here's a phone that can't be rooted. It just blows my mind and really, I'm saddened by it. It totally defeats the original idea behind Android - a device that people can root, voiding their warranty, develop - A lot of Amateur dev'd features have been incorporated into Android as it's grown over the years, and modify. Even the Judicial system said end users have the right to do what they want to their device and void the warranty at their own discretion.
However, even if it does ever actually come out and even if VZW DOES carry it and even if I could afford it, which I doubt, I really like th Z force, from what I've seen and read.
So how are you guys who have always used rooted, mod'd devices living without root??
I guess I can learn to give up most of my root required apps, begrudgingly, but TB?? How could I ever transfer my apps and data (MUST have data transferred too) without root??
What about bloatware? It's like giving up sex for me to give up root. Aaaauuuggghhhhh

Well for me the biggest difference is I used to use Playstation controllers, so I had to switch to a gamesir g3s which is the same size and shape but does not require root. Nothing else I do requires root so Im perfectly fine not having it. I miss mhl far more than root since I used it a lot with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse with chrome remote desktop, but I bought a laptop to eliminate that.
I'm really missing the following apps:
Titanium Backup
Ad Blockers that actually work well (AdAway, MinMinGuard, UnbelovedHosts)
Viper4Android
File Browsers that can access the entire filesystem (allowing me to debloat stock apps, among other things).
I can partially work around the ad blockers thing by spending a few extra bucks to purchase some apps that I don't use often enough to have already warranted a purchase, and using DNS66 for non-secure uses (a less than optimal solution, since I can't trust some random server on the internet which could theoretically hit me with a MITM attack...I turn it off whenever security is a concern).
There really is no good workaround for TiBu, V4A, or root file explorers.
But the benefits are that I can now use Android Pay, and don't need to fight with SnapChat every time I need to log back in.
The negatives far outweigh the benefits, and I don't want to ever buy a non-rootable phone again. GFY Verizon.

That's what I wanted to hear. Guess I'll have to pass on this one. No Backup, or V4A is not acceptable for me
The only complaint that I have is that some of the pre-installed apps are not able to be uninstalled. theres 4? or so that I can't get rid of
This is my first non-rootable phone and I have mixed feelings about that. As a stock platform, the Z Force is a great phone and does almost all that I could ask for from a pocket computer. I love having stock Android and like having WiFi calling, though it's a pain to switch back and forth: go into airplane mode, then switch WiFi on to make WiFi calls. Of course, you have to remember to turn airplane mode off when you get back into service.
I also miss Titanium Backup and the ability to completely remove apps I have no interest in having on my phone. All things being equal, I find that I can live without root on this phone. Battery life is great, it's fast, and it gets frequent and regular updates.
Really, no root?
So I just as well stay with my old rooted Droid Turbo. I came here thinking its time I look for a newer Motorola phone, that I can root.
What if I buy an unlocked Z Force? Can it be rooted then?
It seems that the regular Moto Z can be rooted according to this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/how-to/guide-how-to-root-moto-z-supersu-t3551113
So why can the Force not also be rooted?
Stuck with VZW Malware
I'd like to add to my original list of complaints about not having root.
The topic: AppFlash
Verizon now pushes the AppFlash malware onto every Android device. Without root, it can not be removed properly. I tried to disable the app via Settings, and it "uninstalled" an "update" so now AppFlash doesn't appear in the Apps list, but I still get messages that "AppFlash has crashed" multiple times per day. I work in an area with minimal cell service and no GPS service, and I strongly supect that it's AppFlash that's trying to spy on me, which is causing my phone to be constantly seeking location via GPS and draining my battery. It's only the last month or two that I've noticed it being this bad, and that does seem to correspond with the time that people started reporting the latest wave of AppFlash installations.
Make no bones about it, this is spyware, pushed by Verizon, that tracks your location, calls home to report everything ELSE they've spied on you as well, drains battery rapidly, and can not be removed!
This was the final straw, Verizon. I'm going to move back to iPhone (at least VZW can't crap up iOS too badly, like they can with Android) and then convince my wife to finally fire those VZW bums and switch to T-Mobile or Google Fi.

Haha, I know, right? Reading comprehension can be hard.
As I said, my plan was to FIRST move back to an iPhone, THEN switch to T-Mobile OR Google Fi (the implication being, that when changing networks, one must obviously either have or obtain compatible hardware). Unfortunately, in my area only VZW has reliable 4G coverage without dead zones in the places where we need service the most. The wife has put her foot down about switching networks for the time being.
At least my iPhone, while older, still has the most recent version of iOS and is unencumbered by Verizon's malware. It's a reasonable compromise at the moment.

Chromecast - spoof location

Hello!
I'm trying to use Youtube Tv from outside the US.
Worked great until last Saturday when Google somehow implemented location features to the cast devices.
I can still start the app and view stuff on my tablet by spoofing the GPS and it used to be that was enough to be able to start a cast of whatever programming I wanted.
Since the new location feature came in I can't cast anymore, I get a message that the app is not supported in my country.
I figure (without having a way to be sure) that the Chromecast devices (and Nexus Player) now use wifi assisted location to get a position.
I have tried to put the chromecast behind a vpn, then factory defaulting it, then get it directly to exit in Chicago but nothing works, telling me it's likely not an IP or DNS issue.
I obviously have no way to make sure that every wifi access point the Chromecast sees gets registered with a spoofed location.
So I'm at a bit of a loss as to how I'd be able to circumvent this.
I have a Chromecast 1st gen, a Chromecast Ultra and a Nexus Player on Nougat.
Tablet is Nexus 7 (2013) running Pure Nexus Nougat build.

Downsides of rooting?

The main things I'm looking for are reinstalling adaway or any other adblocker that needs to access the hosts file, and 1080p60 rear camera recording. I've learned to live without the former, and I'm not holding my breath that Samsung will enable the latter even tho it works on the A70 and there are mods to make it work on rooted A71. I bought my A71 on Amazon, as far as I know it has no warranty because it's the international edition so I don't really care about tripping Knox. I know that OTA updates are disabled, but I've used Odin in the past and am familiar with how to flash stock updates with it. I have read that rooted devices can't use Google Pay/Samsung Pay, but can be fixed with MagiskHide -- is this correct? I don't really care about custom roms, stock is fine and much better than touchwiz from my previous samsung S4. Is there anything else that I would potentially lose out on that doesn't have a workaround?
Thanks

Rooting is pointless and a total waste of time, imo no phone really needs to be rooted as they are good enough as they come.

There is a really cool alternative to adaway called blokada. I use it on both unrooted and rooted devices, it works pretty good.
Tripping knox is something that stays forever, so it's a really important decision to make. I've been tripping knox since it was introduced a few generations ago so I'm not really missing anything lol.
I have no way of testing Google Pay since it's not supported by my bank, but I can at least open it and attempt to register a payment method so I think that maybe it may be useable for banks that support it.
Samsung Pay, for now, totally depends on the knox fuse, so it won't work again even if you go back to fully locked stock
Samsung Pass is also lost with the knox fuse blown, with no current workaround, but I find the Google Password manager to be just as good
Secure Folder is also broken in stock, so you'll have to either fix it or install a custom ROM that has it fixed if you want to ever use it again
And finally, widevine is set to L3 which means you will only be able to stream in 720p with Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. I don't know if this is set to L1 by default on the A71 stock firmware(I rooted way before I knew what widevine even was) so I suggest you check your Netflix playback information on settings to see if you have Widevine L1 there. If it is, you can currently play stuff in full HD. If it's L3 even in stock A71 firmware then ignore this whole sentence lol.
Thanks for the detailed reply.

I've read a bit on Google Pay, seems like a lot of work to get it working on a rooted device with Magisk. But on the other hand I haven't really used it up to now, although it is nice to have in case I forget my wallet when going out. Never used the other features you mentioned, and I don't use my phone for watching netflix/prime, just YouTube. Do you know if lack of Widevine L1 could prevent casting of HD/UHD content from my phone to a tv, or limit YouTube on the phone to 720p? I do cast a lot of live sports from http links using Web Video Caster to my TV.
To me it looks like the big thing I'm missing on stock is 1080p60 rear camera, which I believe your ROM has, and looking at the videos on my wife's iphone xr it makes a huge difference. From reading your other posts, it looks like it's just a setting in an xml file to enable it on the phone, and I'm sure if it could be done without rooting everyone would be doing it. I guess it's up to Samsung to enable this feature in One UI 3.0 or some future update. I think if it doesn't happen in One UI 3.0 I will go ahead and root.
Thanks again.

Widevine only effects things that could stream copy-righted material (that are ultra secure) like Netflix and Prime Video. It has no effect on Youtube, you should be good to go.

I guess it's up to Samsung to enable this feature in One UI 3.0 or some future update. I think if it doesn't happen in One UI 3.0 I will go ahead and root.
Thanks again.

Yes it literally only takes one edit on a text file to enable it. I don't know why Samsung went out of their way to keep it off of the A71. Weird since this is a 2020 phone, you would think that they would enable as much features as possible to get it to sell. Sometimes I don't know what Samsung is thinking. What may happen is that Samsung adds 60 fps recording and calls it "We added a brand new, exciting feature to the mid-range phones" but I HIGHLY doubt it, who knows.

Really? I didn't have a hard time getting Pay to open, but since I can't fully test it I guess I can't say for sure

I don't know if it's a matter of opening Google Pay, but maybe adding cards and using the device for NFC payment. Here's the thread where I read the solution, the post is pretty lengthy:

The only negative (with no workaround) is the lost of drm, widevide switches from level 1 to level 3. This happens by unlocking bootloader actually, but that's a required step towards rooting.
This won't allow you to stream HD drm protected content, like from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Probably won't be able to stream Atmos music on Tidal too, but I'm not sure about this one.
They say widevide goes back to L1 after relocking bootloader but haven't tried (yet?) and I had an opposite experience with an older phone where it never came back.

Sir, if you ever unroot and relock bootloader please let know on forum if Widevide goes back to L1.
Thank you

How to install ChromeOS on Sabrina Chromecast with GoogleTV

In this supreme hackerous master page not a single snowden has figure this one out yet?
So.. my question to yous is.. is there any way to turn Sabrina Chromecats into ChromeOS?
Clean install no Virtual ChimiChanga Virtualization Apk that run crippled..
first an exploit has to be discovered. Nobody's loading anything on it until that happens Based on my poor ability to pwn things I haven't figured out squat. I've looked for hardware exploits and tried all the older known stuff. It's pretty locked down.
that being said, you can run chrome... just sideload the apk. I'm not a fan of chrome os but I use my chromecast as a 'computer' to check random websites every once in awhile this way.
While rooting may be possible, it's unlikely that we'll be able to unlock the bootloader and install a different OS. The FireTV 4K took almost a year before a bootrom exploit was discovered, and even that required cracking open the case, removing shielding from the board, and shorting out tiny pins.
