Hello, I try to connect a Toshiba hard drive to my Moto X xt1097 using OTG but it doesn't recognize it. Does anybody has an idea why is this happening?
Maybe the format. What format is your hard drive's file system?(ntfs, fat32, etc...)

Most likely that is the problem. You need to look for a file manager app that says it supports OTG and NTFS. FAT32 is better supported via OTG.

I connected the same hard drive to a moto G, and using root explorer I could see my files. But in my Moto X nothing happens, not even using root explorer.
I had problems with it before in root explorer(on my first gen X). I switched to ES File Explorer and it could work better with OTG. But that was just from my experience.

I plug in my external hdd's often onto my Moto X and it detects fine using root explorer. You need to go to the root of your filesystem->storage->usbdisk, but you probably have tried doing that. You could try connecting a different pen drive or hdd to see if those work or not.
I've connected an usb pen drive and everything is fine.
I've noticed also that, when I connect the hard drive, the device detect it briefly then nothing happens.
Also, I've installed some apps from the play store that help mounting and unmounting ntfs devices; when I connect the hdd the app starts blinking and a message appears constantly "device attached", device detached... And so on

This is probably a stupid question, but is it a small portable HDD? I remember sometimes I had issues connecting an old 2.5" laptop HDD. The phone couldn't provide enough power for it to fully operate, and it would just keep spinning up and spinning down, but never fully operating.

It's a small one
Power is definitely your issue here. The typical 2.5" HDD takes 1-3 W of power. However, the typical OTG device can supply maybe 1 W max.
Well, I just tried my external USB 3 500GB drive (2.5"). Only FAT32 worked. NTFS and exFAT would not work at all.

Yeah, I formatted each time to see what would mount. The Moto X mounted the HDD immediately. I usually use solid explorer for file management.
It's frustrated. My Moto G 4G running cm12 detects the hdd immediately, but my expensive Moto X running stock 5.0 doesn't. Could be a rom related problem maybe?

Yeah, I think NTFS read/write working is due to CM12. I don't think NTFS ever worked on stock roms on any android devices, due to licensing issues and such. I remember reading about NTFS-3G or something like that being incorporated into CM that enabled NTFS read/write.
I tried the Paragon exFAT, NTFS & HFS+ app, and it mounted my HDD w/NTFS formatting, and I could see my files in solid explorer, but I couldn't actually open anything.
I don't think there is much you can do other than using FAT32.
Disregard this post..

In the user guide it states "You need a USB On-The-Go micro cable adapter to connect HTC phone and a USB storage device. HTC phone supports USB storage devices (except portable hard drives) up to 64 gb."
I have downloaded ASTRO File manager and on attaching the OTG cable to the ONE and than the 64 GB GB Flash Drive, I am unable to find the flash Drive. The drive illuminates but is not discoverable on the phone. I don't know if 64 gb is too large a flash drive, but it seems strange to state up to 64 GB if it can't take it.
Any help would be appreciated. The phone is locked to 3 and is running 4.1.2.
Thank you

Are you going up to the root of the filesystem or looking in the built-in storage where DCIM, documents etc.. live? You won't find an attached drive inside your "SDCard".

You will have to give me step by step instructions please.
I have opened Astro File Manager and am presented with the options under locations of
1, My Files
2 Scan local Networks
3 google mail
4 box
5 Drop box
6 Facebook.
7 Sky Drive
No where in any of the folders, do I find anything that resembles what appears to be a flash drive. Please advise so that I can get this to work.
Thank you
I don't have astro, but best location to start would be my files, then look in the settings to see if you need to change something to allow access to the root filesystem. To be honest the easiset thing to do would be to install root explorer as it will default to top level of the filesystem. Should see a folder called something like "USB storage" there.
Use ES File Explorer much better.
All you do then is press the / button and it takes you to root of the phone and then from there you can choose sdcard.
I think the 64gb flash is formatted as exfat. try formatting it to fat32 instead.

Strange, on my ES File explorer I needed to enable "Up to root" in settings and press the folder with the up arrow on it. Can't see a / button anywhere, just in the location history.

Does anyone know how to get an OTG cable and a 64 GB flashdrive to be seen, recognised for videos to be accessed from that flashdrive using such a cable on an HTC One ? Thank you
Format the USB stick fat32. NTFS doesn't work without additional software on the phone.

As has already been mentioned, it has nothing to do with size, only how you've formatted it. It can read any drive that goes up to the maximum of FAT32 (2TB IIRC).
Ok,
Any software to work with NTFS?
Thanks for this thread. I can cross out HTC One from my list of next phone candidates.
I will not be buying any phone unless it supports large files (+4GB).
Unfortunately, as it looks like now, that means choosing a plastic phone

are you really basing your opinion on buying this phone from this users inability to connect a 64 gig flash drive via usb otg?
if so, go ahead and get plastic.....you don't deserve this phone.
theres an app that you get that will help mount ntfs over otg.
and yes you can mount portables.

I have tried Paragon's NTFS driver. But two reasons I wouldn't choose it:
1. Requires rooting. I'm past the experimenting-with-my-phone stage since a long time back.
2. Doesn't work with the internal 32/64GB.
And no, I wouldn't choose Samsung. My current phone is the Sony XP, which with its aluminium body seems to be HTC's inspiration.

I do still experiment with ROMs. Right now I'm trying to get the newly announced JB for the SXP. But beyond loading different ROMs, I'm not interested tweaks etc.
Same issue with my SXP actually. The internal 16GB does not support >4GB files.

People have asked since discovery of our beloved Ouya once you've got it out of the box you may have noticed that their is a USB port on the back.
After quick maintenance of my own personal testing USB will simply not run from stock.(Not that I'm fully aware of).
There are a few key ways of going about this, two ways as far as we know.
But I'm only teaching one.
First off, if you've plugged up a USB and didn't get a mount, there are a few steps to take to attempt to fix. I've got a positive affect to this, others have had different.
So let's start off first by using the ADB method of getting root a.k.a Superuser onto out device using the tut in the dev area.
Once you've accessed this, download "[root] StickMount" from the market. Assuming that this .apk can't be found on Google let's use an app to pull your .apk from the downloaded stuff you've gotten in the Google Play Store.
Now there are a few apps that do this, I used App2SD and rebuilt the .apk myself(which took a good while recoding), once you've pulled the .apk either load it tons cloud storage area you use, or side load it, you can also find a tutorial in the dev area as well.
Once you've got the app loaded make sure you set the setting properly to detect the USB you plan to use! This is key to getting something detected. From here you should be able to check in your file explorer and locate "ExternalSD" or whatever you see it fall under. If, and only if the USB doesn't show up, that may mean you've got the wrong format. I want each and all of you to give FAT32 a go as this is standard.
Warning, I don't know who all has tried this so if you're not happy with the occurrence, don't come beating my door in.
If there's anybody who ends up with a successful outcome, please leave feedback!
If nobody gets anything I'll just make sure to have this thread locked or closed.
If you're suffering any other issues, try this.

"Make" Software" and next to the browser you should see the app icon for the ES File Manager.
in the file manager that has the default start page in your internal SD card storage. Just select your "USB Storage" instead of "SD card"
installing something like StickMount and needing superuser privileges is totally overkill for just accessing external storage.
if the root and stickmount way works for 1000 GB+ storage sizes i have no idea. However i don't see how it should affect external storage size

All Ouya's should mount a harddrive with no problem. You just have to plug it in when it is off or restart using a app or the terminal. It just has to be OFF not in sleep mode.

This is true, all of a sudden this week there were many people having trouble using their USB drives. Mine used to work until sometime this week. NTFS included. I was able to mount an NTFS-formatted 1TB Seagate Expansion drive earlier tonight. What I had to do was root my Ouya and use the USB OTG Helper app. I made a post on OuyaForums about it here.

Certain Jump drives will not mount because the USB port does not supply enough power. Powered USB drives or very efficient ones will work.

Nope. I have an 8GB usb stick and it doesn't work no matter what I do or what format I put it in. Haven't tried this method yet but what you're talking about does NOT work for everyone. And the powered 2TB external drive just causes Ouya to freeze every time at boot.

I have never seen a powered USB flash drive. Furthermore, if a flash drive isn't mounting due to the port not outputting enough power, then the drive or the mobo is broken or otherwise failing to adhere to the spec. External hard drives (spinning platters) of the type common a few years ago when flash drives were cost prohibitive generally DO require an external power source (or at least draw from 2 USB ports), but they generally aren't referred to as jump drives. In my experience (which is considerable but not infinite) most flash drive issues tend to be due to bad connections after the drive is beat up or by managing to write past the end of the drive. Flash media is generally reliable and does not draw more power than the USB port puts out by spec. I highly doubt that power supply problems are a common cause of mounting issues.

It seems that you just wanna shun the method I gave you.
If you dont want help, that's fine with me but please don't come into my threads to tread on my method.
Firstly, I need to know!
Are you rooted or stock?
If either, have you installed Ouya Plus?
If so! Try the given method above or Google an apps that suits your needs.
We are here to help, and I'm telling you right now that this method has worked for me, and maybe other users.
FACT:
Not all Ouya have been able to read USB from start, more than others have reported having issues with USB and have had to use the root method to even get a reading.
TIP:
Wanna check and see if your device is/has been read?
Please either use FX File Manager or Astro as these are the best at the moment. Both can be found and side loaded onto the Ouya.
Once you've installed either one, go to the manager, do you see an "External Drive" or "USB Mounted Drive" on the device? You're good to go.
ADVICE:
Did this not show up for you?
SOLUTION:
The butter to the bread is as easy as my method above yet not all people have been as lucky as I.

Mine wouldn't work right out of the box. I turned it on and set it up. Plugged in my 2.5" spare laptop USB 3.0 HDD. Nothing. 32gb NTFS Thumb drive. Nothing. 16gb FAT32. Nothing. MicroSD 16gb (used in my MK808). Nothing. Thought my USB was blown. Plugged in a PS3 Sixaxis controller and it worked. So something was strange.
Read online that there was a firmware patch that must have broke some things. I'm assuming this broke if a USB was previously mounted.
Only a Factory Reset would fix it. Plugged in the USB HDD and it booted right now first time. Spent 2 days screwing with it.
So if nothing mounts, factory reset. It SHOULD mount out of the box. FAT32 and NTFS are both confirmed to work with no additional apps.

Also Google play music doesn't find any files, however Power Amp does.
Nexus media importer sees files as well.
I tested my otg micro SD reader and it works fine.

Hi, new Moto X user here.
I'm new on the OTG world, my old smarphone did not have that functionality at all.
Now that I have a Moto X I want to know if I can plug in my 1TB WD external drive and what should I do besides getting my OTG cable. Should I install any app? where does it shows?

You need a file manager app, and then it shows up under USB/1.1.1 on mine.. forget the full path, maybe /mnt or /externasd

You may also need a hybrid usb connector with one microusb and two standard usb connectors. The second usb connector may be needed to power the external hd by plugging into a computer usb port or using it with an ac power adapter. Some external hd's can be used without external power, but my WD 750Gb Passport requires it. Without external power, it will chew through your battery fairly quickly.

Got File Manager, tried my 1TB WD Passport, the led start and all, but not showing on the mnt foldernor externalsd
Also tried a small pendrive, same thing.
My PS3 controller either (longshot but I had to try ) I guess I should stand by for root access to get my SixAxsis running.

Looks like it powers the external drive (leds are coming up). Also on the PS3 controles all leds start titling like if its charging.
Just the OTG cable (cheap one) and the regular USB.
Still can't get my MTP to work, so using OTG + a thumb drive to transfer files in the meantime. Works great. Wish I could figure out the MTP though...

I always find my external storage in Root Explorer under /sdcard/usbstorage/sda. But that is on my rooted N7 using Stickmount. Apparently, the moto x kernal doesn't require Stickmount or NMI.

I purchased two OTG cables and none of them worked with MOTO X, while they automatically work with Samsung S4!
One cable 3in1 was purchased as advertised for MOTO X in eBay. The other cable from meenova (as advertized for MOTO X). I am seeing the USB connections for storage in settings only for "USB Computer connection" as MTP and PTP and not for "Mass Storage".
How is it possible for Samsung with 4.2 and why it is not available in MOTO X with 4.4?????
Please help me..

It pops up as a folder labeled usbdisk_ 1.1.1 in /storage. Use a file explorer like ES or for super easy access, use OTG Disk Explorer.
The folder storage/usbdisk_1.1.1 is empty

Yeah man no prob, always happy to help. Not sure why that folder is showing empty, are there a bunch of usbdisk_x.x.x folders in /storage? I've got 9 for some reason but my OTG comes up in the 1.1.1 folder. I'd check them all.
OTG didn't work for me with my one cable. I checked the 1.1.1 folder and nothing. Didn't get a notification about new storage mounted either.

I don't get any notification. I just go and check that folder and it's all there. Try OTG disk explorer. If that doesn't work you can always go the Stickmount route.

The KitKat update killed OTG on Moto X. Before I could find my storage on the same place, 1.1.1.
Now the folder is always empty. I checked all the others too

This has by far been the only thing to piss me off about this phone. I'm hoping they'll release 4.4.2 with a fix for it otherwise I'll be rooting and using stickmount.
Nexus Media Importer works with Kitkat. No problems using it.
Hey all,
Is this possible with the Droid Turbo?
I'm used to plugging my phones in via USB, and having the file system mount as a mass storage device, allowing me to move files to and from my phone easily.
When I plug in the Droid Turbo, I have two choices, either MTP, which just brings up an installer of some sort, or camera mode, which only allows me access to pictures and videos.
Now granted, all of my past Android phones have been running third party images (mostly Cyanogenmod) and maybe this is the reason for the difference (though I thought I had file system access with stock image in the past, but maybe I am misremembering)
Any thoughts on anything I can do to get complete file system access?
Works for me. ES file manager does too.

I have file system access from the phone using ES no problem, and can mount usb storage using one of those adapters.
I'm talking about access to the phones file system from the computer using USB.
Worked perfectly on my old phone, doesn't with the Turbo.
OIC, not that I know of.
Sounds like it might be a driver issue. I plugged my phone into my computer (Windows 7) shortly after I got home with the turbo and moved a bunch of backed up files onto the turbo without any issues at all.

Understood. Hardware manufacturers modify drivers so frequently though that that is probably the issue. Can't say that I've attempted to connect to my linux box yet...

I know. Never understood the need for specialized drivers when they could just mount as a standard USB Mass Srorage device and be compatible with everything out of the box
But I guess that would just make too much sense...
Has anyone tried a otg with it yet
Same Problem Here...
I had the same issue when plugging my Droid Turbo into my Windows 7 machine. I'm afraid I don't have any advice for those of you on Linux, but if you have problems on windows where it's only showing you something about "Motorola Device Manager", here are the steps I took that fixed the problem for me:
On Windows 7 go to Start Menu > Devices and Printers. Under Devices you should see XT1254. Right click on this and select Troubleshoot. If the issue you are experiencing is like mine, then the problem was simply that the drivers didn't auto-install when the Droid was first connected to your PC and the troubleshooter should install them properly for you.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the cause is that Moto Device Manager software. When you first attach the phone via USB the computer treats it as an install disc rather than as a storage device. Perhaps those of you on linux might be having a similar issue, I hope this helps and I apologize if it doesn't.
My wife just purchased a Turbo. I can not get the storage to mount on Ubuntu. This is the only phone that I don't have access to the storage. I do have access to the PMP. I am also receiving an "no permissions" when using adb. I search for adb devices, and no permissions? I have developer options enabled, USB debugging checked. I just tried 2 other phones with adb, all functions?
To clear up some things:
Different OSes treat MTP differently. Windows gives access to the storage area, OS X requires Android File Transfer App, and GNU/Linux I have no idea.

chazall1: You have to authorize the computer on the device. The screen must be on and unlocked.

mattlach: It makes perfect sense why they do not use USB Mass Storage. Mass storage requires exclusivity to the OS, and that means the phone cannot use it. Which means, the phone crashes because the OS resides on the NAND you would want to mount and read. MTP is the compromise. Phone in the past that had access as mass storage had SD cards as well, either internally or added on. For example, the old school Droid Incredible had both an internal sd card and an external slot.
Probably already answered but yes you can. Just gotto my computer as yyou'd lookfor a uUSB device. And sorry aboutmiss sspells. Swift key sucks so much...... Omfg.
Looks like they want us to use MTP or PTP. Mass storage is not an option. I found this from Verizon:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-117349/
"USB Mass Storage feature is currently not available, however, files can be transferred to/from a computer utilizing Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)"
Not to jack the thread, but when using Windows Explorer to access my turbo, almost all of the folders (music, pictures, dcim, etc.) show up as files. Anyone else have this issue?

According to Verizon, its not possible to connect the Turbo as a mass storage device. Epic fail in my opinion... U can bypass it by using google drive...

Well, Windows 7 doesn't solve the problem. The main reason I didn't switch to an iPhone from Android was lack of access to the file system. There are other things on my phone I would like to transfer or backup to my PC besides the media that appears when connecting the device. I had no idea when I got this new Droid Turbo I would be pushed back into the stone age. No sd card, no removable battery and no access to the file system. Arrgh
And no manual sound off switch that can't be overridden by software.
Hey guys, I know this is an old thread but Google brought it up. haha
I was messing with this and I turned off the "Software Installation" option and all of the sudden drivers installed and everything seems to be working. I guess the software installer was overriding the normal driver installation or something.
Not sure it's a universal fix but maybe it'll help someone.

EDIT: Oops. Looks like this is a zombie thread. I'm sure you probably had the answer to that by now.
Im using my n6 2 weeks now and i wanted to check today if i can use a mouse via usb like my old note 3 and then i saw that i cant even use a flash drive... I didnt try to use the mouse after that because i was searching so hard to find a solution and after i couldnt i came to ask if anyone has the same problem. Is it a lollipop problem? Or just nexus phones dont support this?
Thats in advance
Nexus phones don't support flash drives out of the box.
You need root and stick mount from play store.
The mouse should work without any mods. I use my Bluetooth one but i think a USB one should be fine too.
this plugin for Total Commander works without root.
Nexus Media Importer. No root required either.
ES Explorer will read USB flash drives too (no root needed)

Odd - I assume it was working till today? Try rebooting your phone I guess. I just verified that my drive is still being read.
If I use stickmount will all the apps see the external USB drive?
