You could be getting throttled from the Mothership.

I noticed that in my area before. I think they are working on upgrades during night when network traffic is low.

Yes , on peak lte speeds really suck in my area also, my fix is to go to mobile connections and choose wcdma, gsm (4g). It usually gives me 1.8 MBS . Too bad device/network can't determine fastest speeds vs strongest signal. You will be pleasantly surprised by switching to 4G
You right. For the first few months after lte was introduced in my area I was using 4g only. I had faster and steady downloads with up to 2mbit uploads while lte was randomly dropping connection, swithing to 4 or 3g. For 4g I was using 4g apn settings what originally came with my note 2 not latest lte apn setting.

I have unlimited data so it shouldn't be throttled. I talked to T-mobile yesterday and they don't even know what could be causing it. This just started 2 weeks ago. I did get a free sim card and $30 off my bill so can't complain too much.

Nope. Between my girlfriend and I we have only used 70 gigs.

That was the first of 3 back to back tests. These were the other 2. Higher overall reading but really inconsistent while testing. Even then, usually when T-mobile hits the throttle switch, a speed test will show normal data speeds.

Just talked to T-mobile again yesterday. Still No Update from the engineers. They haven't been doing any maintenance on the towers. Maybe I just got a bad Note 4. I Got On the 2nd Shipment when it released. My Gf got her Note 4 about a month ago and she isn't having any of these issues.

Reboot phone, turn off all messengers. In settings in speed test app choose server hosted by Tmobile, run the test. If still very slow try in another location where you are connected to different Tmobile tower. If still slow you are either being throttled by Tmobile or you have defective phone. Put your sim card to friend's phone and run test again. If very slow then throttling, if normal then phone is damaged. Another issue could be network itself. To check this you would need someone with Tmobile smartphone to perform test at your location using their device and sim card.

It started last night, the phone keeps roaming every minute or so, then goes back to normal. The signal is all over the place too, it goes from full bars to just one. My girlfriend's iPhone 5 is working fine. Is anyone else having the same problem

Nope, no issue here. You can set it to "home only" in mobile data> roaming so it doesnt jump back and forth.

I called sprint, the first time they said there were no outages, but a couple hours ago, my gf's iphone started saying extended, so I called back, they said the tower that's near my house is down (hopefully because it's getting LTE!!! :fingers-crossed: )
But I have to keep roaming on, otherwise I can't send or receive texts and calls, plus they said they won't charge me for roaming

Just watch your mobile data usage while you're on extended coverage! I believe it's 300MB until they call you up.
If it's due to a tower outage, Sprint is generally more generous with the roaming usage limitations. They actually told me they would reimburse me for any minutes I went over due to not having unlimited mobile to mobile while roaming.
The tower by my house was down for over a week, and now it's finally back but with much poorer signal. It went down the same day it was slated for a 4G upgrade, so I guess the contractor bungled something.

That's new info to me; certainly something to keep in mind. Service has generally been pretty good where I live, and the last time we had an outage, there weren't any cell towers functioning on any carrier in the area, so it was pretty moot.

I'm sure you don't mind quite as much now. My first LTE experience was at a corporate picnic near my house, and I have rarely been quite as confused as I was to see that little "4G" icon winking at me from the status bar.
I'm pretty sure it is a Phoenix thing. I have the same problem. My girlfriend has an iPhone, never has the connection problems I have. The research I've done seems to point to the fact that we have LTE phones in a non-LTE market; the phone struggles with this. When I was in Nashville the phone blew my mind. LTE, everything was blazing fast, no problems with call quality/drops.
Had an entire section of town go down yesterday. Showed full signal but everytime anyone attempted to make a call it showed "network failure". Even attempting to call sprint's customer service numbers.
Finally got ahold of sprint via a land line and they claimed the towers show no problems and the network wasn't congested...
It is really bad since I rely on my phone for emergency response. Anyone else notice instability like this lately?

Well we were on the "list" (Tallahassee, FL) but haven't seen much LTE (or any) in Tallahassee... It wasn't just 3g, the entire 1xRTT network dropped (no phone calls, no texts). I am on business so I get to use business tech (instead of consumer tech) and they viewed all the work orders for the towers in teh area. Said there was nothing currently happening that would have caused the entire network to go down and that we aren't even close to 800 SMR deployment (which pisses me off because Sprint coverage inside my office is horrible, while verizon I can get a strong 1x, 3g and LTE (my work phone and air card are all verizon)).
Same thing happened to me a while back, nothing worked, but I was roaming. It lasted for a few days, then when it started working again, I got LTE.
Same thing going on around Philly suburbs. Calls dropping like crazy and horribly slow 3g. When lte is turned on for good, does 3g go back to normal, or stay slower than the 1x speeds I get in some places?

How so when Sprint's internal diagnostic tools show the tower is functioning properly (in respect to the Sprint network)?
Its possible that your area is getting 1900 network vision upgrades, which knock you out for about a week.you don't really notice the lte install because you don't have the service, but you are dependent on 1900 for voice so its not pretty. Our area just got the upgrade and we had a lot of unhappy customers, I couldnt call or text for about 6 days. I'm off for a few weeks or I would check it out for you.

So if I am scheduled to get LTE in my area soon, what kind of behavior would the network show?
I get crappy 3G almost everywhere, where every time I try to do anything, the 3G indicator goes dark and I get a network error. Whenever I get an LTE signal, it's usually a namesake, and I get knocked down to 3G. In select spots at select times, I get super duper slow 3G: around 90kbps. Sometimes 200. VERY few times, I get around 2 megs on LTE. That only lasts a little while.
I'm scheduled to get LTE this month. When should I expect decent coverage? All the threads in the International forum about gigs of data have me PUMPED!

Towers go down. Power goes out, internet goes down.
These things happen. You call Sprint, you let them know. Even if they tell you everything looks good on their end, if they get 5 calls about the same tower, they'll send out an engineer.
Expecting 100% uptime is absurd.

Normally you will just start to see 4g more often. You may some some minor odd behavior because they are up on the tower fooling around but it won't be a big outage. They do one site at a time, and once it's on it has to be tuned for optimal performance which takes a while too.
Sadly your 3g speeds are normal anymore, smart phones now days have completely overwhelmed the marginal capacity that evodo offers. Only thing they can do is to throw more RF carriers up but that can cause interface issues between cell sites and it can actually hinder performance. Areas that have complete lte toll outs do end up with much better 3g since the data hogs are now on lte, I can get about 1.5 down on 3g here where we have both lte and 1900mghz 3g network vision complete.
Same issues in Washington, DC for the Past 3 days. I sure hope its because they are upgrading the towers
Same thing happened in Houston a couple of days ago. One of the three towers in the area I work has been Network Vision upgraded, other two still in the works. Anywho, all of a sudden, no calls/texts for a span of about 20-30 minutes (longer/more in other areas). Sprint: "no issues reported in your area", I was: "yeah, I'm reporting one/some". Everything back to normal, for the time being, super-slow 3G (less than 100kbps). Thank goodness for Xfinity at home/work. I work for a preferred retailer and all we have been advised is that the upgrades are coming and will resolve and greatly improve our (Sprint's) network. Hopefully, the influx of money from the new owners will make it so. Nextel bandwidth/spectrum to be used for LTE, yes you'll need a new phone with correct radio.

I havent read much of what's going on here just skimmed through but I would like to add what I've heard.
Lately we've been having a lot of iPhones come in with data issues. Not just the 5 but 4 and 4s as well. This week alone I've seen 6 myself. Before that... Maybe 1 or 2 everyone 6 months. It's rare. And today these people plus more have come back with a worse issue. They aren't getting reception anywhere. (I'm in Washington btw). So I called my nss support team and they said as of the 17th of July sprint has been getting way more aggressive with the network vision and the iPhone's are more sensitive to this update but other device will start experience these problems and it's going to get worse all over the state till about October. The eta is October.
Sprint wants to have this network vision finished by this year so it just makes sense it would be happening in other states also.

So it looks like pretty much every other prepaid carrier has its own thread so I thought I'd start one for the Straight Talk folks. I picked up my N5 a little over a week ago and switched both my wife and I (also has an N5) from Sprint. We'd been with them for a little over 9 years but in their LTE migration here in Portland their coverage went from decent to terrible. Thus far I'm very happy with the AT&T service, speed is good, cost is AWESOME, and I can tether without root so I retain work email functionality. I'm very pleased with the decision to dump Sprint and couldn't be happier with the N5!
With my ATT phone I could not tether unless I went to the high Gb plan. The unlocked Nexus, as you found, lets you do it out of the box.

I did the same. Jumped ship from Sprint and went to Straight Talk, mainly because of the savings and Sprints bogus 3G & WiMax 4G. Tried t-mobiles $30 plan but the cell reception in my area was worse than what i had with Sprint. I was skeptical about going back to At&t as I had them before i had Sprint and was getting charged way more than i should have been paying for one line. I went with Straight Talk At&t and i have LTE coverage, a very reasonable phone bill, and no worries about extra charges. Definitely recommend to anyone whos looking for a reasonable bill and doesnt have good t-mobile coverage.
Me and two of my friends got nexus 5s and att st Sims and two of us networks say home. The other says at&t -_- good service none the less.

Anyone able to get the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to work? I have seen threads where the N5 and T-Mobile users has gotten it to work but none for the ST ATT users.
I dropped Sprint with another six months left on my contract, so it will cost me about $120 in fees, but it's worth it. I'll save almost $ 40 a month, so after just three months the ETF would have been paid off, and I really start saving.
I'm very happy with Straight Talk AT&T. I have superior data speeds, and my calls are clear with no drops.
My mobile hotspot works, too.
I've used a few different pre paid plans the last few years but none of them have been this good. At first I went for the cheapest plan but with low minutes thinking I would use voip or something but I would get extra charges.
Only thing I've worried about with this plan is data limits, but they cleared that up with an actual limit now. I don't really download that much anyways and have a lot of Wi-Fi access.

Absolutely. I downloaded FoxFI but it looks like it's unnecessary.
I'm quite happy with att st for the most part (Salem Oregon). Tmobile data speeds are 2 to 3x faster, but limited service in doors of course.
The one problem I've had with strait talk that I've seen others confirm is the push delay. After an unknown amount of time of inactivity (usually a few minutes) the Google services port on st closes and you won't get new emails or hangouts ect until you refresh or the Google heart beat refreshes (up to 28 minutes).
Fortunately there's an app that lets you manually change the Google push ping to keep it alive. So I'm usually not more than 2 minutes behind on hangouts.

One thing hardly anyone is mentioning is that Straight Talk cripples video streaming on 4G and LTE. Watching YouTube videos is pretty useless unless you switch to 3G which is still pretty crappy. Another thing is that MMS can be hit or miss on Straight Talk. Sometimes its fine and other times it won't work.

I did my first month on the Nexus 5 with Straight talk, really have no complaints at all. AT&T's coverage is not anywhere near as good as Verizon, but it's damn well better than Sprint or T Mobile. I left straight talk for h2o Wireless as there's very little LTE out here with AT&T anyways. The data cap was just too small on straight talk.
H20 wireless $60 a month fit unlimited everything, no throttling.

I am glad someone started an att straight talk thread. Can anyone with a VPN tell me if it works with att straight talk? I use a pretty common VPN provider which works no problem on WIFI but has very frequent dis-connects while on mobile. It is pretty much unusable while on mobile.
Yeah so I've heard they throttle.
The way I figure it. Att is best in my area.
45$ a month for unlim text. Minutes. And 2.5gb data. Is still cheaper then if I wanted to go sign a contract with att for service. I'd have capped minutes. Maybe unlimited text. And 2gb data. Not even unlimited with slow speeds...
So I get an extra 500mb. Free mins. And such. And its cheaper and no contract..
And I haven't found anything better yet.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
So to keep this in perspective I work in a data center and for a long while now haven't had issues, just started recently. Maybe a month ago.
I've tried a few different Roms, being stock through odin, and no dice.
Outside in the parking lot I am on LTE and have great speeds. Soon as I go inside I switch to umts/hspa+ and things go to hell. I sit between -58dBm and -70dBm signal strength. Mostly on the lower end of that spectrum(-58). I generally pull a 500+ms ping and a .10-.18 Mbps down and .01 Mbps up. So worthless. Randomly I get good data, for zero reason, for a min or two and can pull 1-2 Mbps down and 1 mbps up. I used to be able to stream Netflix at work and now I can't even open a simple webpage.
Things to note. Called tmo, had them check towers, reset phone connection from their end, and some other weird steps they wanted, no change.
Anyone have any thoughts? Only thing I can see, is if I open pandora for example, it bounces hard between umts and hspa+. Just non stop flips between the two when trying to pull data.
I have been on NK4 since it came out.

When you are connected to the tower what LTE band are you on? I know at my data center for my company the building is pretty much storm proof, but the thick concrete walls block high frequency signals really easily. If your on a high lte band it's going to be tough to get the signal through the walls. If you disable LTE you may have better luck. You can also use the app "LTE Discovery" to try to force your connection to a lower band if one is available.
This is also why Tmobile offers the free hot spots to some users. If you are in an area where tmobile only uses band 19 then sometimes it has a hard time getting through the walls of homes even.

I tried WCDMA only. It acts the same. I am not trying to get LTE and don't expect too. I was pulling 5-6mbps down on H+ and now I don't even get anything.
The part I don't get, is the phone is supposed to flip from a stand by state of UMTS to HSPA+ for data, then switch back when not using data right? Curious why mine bounces so bad, with good signal.
I have had tmo for over a year now. So over a year of perfect service at work, then BAM crappy service. Ugh.

So I'm lucky enough to live near a tower alongside a lesser traveled interstate. Past 6 months I've been with Sprint I've had excellent service. 4g LTE nearly all the time unless I'm in my basement. I actually get over 30 Mbps at my house on Sprint 4g. So what the heck would make it suddenly stop? It goes to 4g then right when I try to do something it freezes basically, the 4g spinning icon stops, and does nothing, bars drop to zero no service and then 3g kicks in. Could Sprint be throttling me? I have used a lot of data in the passed 6 months. As in average 30 gb a month.. I've updated my profile and prl still nothing.

Could Sprint be throttling me? I have used a lot of data in the passed 6 months. As in average 30 gb a month.. I've updated my profile and prl still nothing.

Is your phone rooted or modified in any way? If not, dial *#*#4636#*#* choose phone info, scroll down and choose LTE only
Yeah I've been rooted since I've had this phone past 6 months. I'm pretty sure my 4g radio has an issue because it'll get signal for 10 seconds and just drops to zero. Unless Sprint is kicking me off 4g website I am quite the data hog.

update PRL from system options if you are on stock rom.
Fair usage policy is 100GB per month(for most providers), if you didn't consume it there is no problem with data hogging.
Thanks for the help but it turned out to be a sim card issue. I ordered a new one for the M8 the Sprint said it wouldn't work so that sim locked it and when I put the old sim back in and voila! 4g again! So if anyone ever runs into this try a different nano sim card. Even if Sowing says it won't work take it out put the other back in.
