[Q] New Gear 1 DOA twice - known issue? - Samsung Galaxy Gear

Hi,
I bought a lime green (if it matters) Gear 1 from Amazon. First one did not charge, didn't turn on. Replacement came in today and same thing: won't charge, won't turn on.
I tried using a USB cable and plugging it into a computer, then my Chromebox, then a different wall wart. No dice. My second replacement will be here tomorrow and I am already dreading that the same thing will happen.
Is this a known issue?
Or is it a stock issue? I wonder if these boxes have been sitting around in a warehouse since 10/2013 and the batteries are all just beyond saving. I have a Gear S, but would love to have full Android on my wrist, and at $118, it was such a great deal.

I had the same issue as you. The way I fixed it was by plugging in the charger with the included wall adapter and putting the watch in without closing the lid. Then I used a small flat head screwdriver (The kind you use to fix glasses etc) and pressed the power button on the side of the watch while it was plugged into the charging unit. The watch then rebooted and voila it started charging. Been working fine since.

Vehicle chargers won't work...

Okay, I'm stumped. I'm already getting a replacement device from HTC under warranty so my problem is solved, but like many of you, I HATE NOT HAVING AN EXPLANATION FOR THINGS!
I'm also wondering if anyone else has had this problem? About 10-Days ago my Kaiser (Tilt) stopped charging via the automotive charger. The A-C charger works fine, but the vehicle charger sent to me with my device from AT&T completely stopped charging my device. I went to the AT&T store & bought a new charger, It didn't work. I changed power points, & cigarette lighter in the vehicle &, it wouldn't work. I tried the charger in the vehicle of two different AT&T sales guys & also tried multiple chargers, & it wouldn't work. Is there any reason why the unit would lose it's ability to charge via a vehicle charger while still retaining it's ability to charge through USB to computer & through the A/C home charger? It seems to me that if the charge portion of the MB was fried, then all charging would be affected.
So how can my device charge fine through all means EXCEPT the vehicle charger?
Again, AT&T is sending me a new device, but I hate not having an explanation for the problem, drives me Nucking Futs!!!
Any ideas, anyone?
Thx!
I dont want to sound rude but have you checked your power settings?
Under the "Advanced" it has a option for "When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC."
If this is ticked it will not charge via the in car charger.
It's a known issue, not just with the Tilt
I had the same problem with my Axim X50 and X51v.
The original sync/charge cable wouldn't charge from the car's lighter, while non-branded cables did so without any problems at all.
This happened with other Axims as well, so I know that it wasn't a defective unit.
I then purchased an HP Ipaq HW6910, and encountered the same issue with my wife's Mazda 5 - the HW6910 woudn't charge if the cable was connected to the charger, when I started the car. It only worked if the adapter and cable were disconnected while staring the car. This did not happen with my Mazda 3 or my Mitsubishi.
And another thing I discovered, is that some cables are not designed for use with car chargers, but they work perfectly with AC chargers.
I bought a couple of retracting sync/charge cables for my HW6910, they worked only when connected to the mains. But regular cables worked perfectly with both power sources.

OF COURSE I DID.
Yeah, It charges fine from the PC, & from an A/C source. But the HTC TYTNII car charger that came with my device, as well as replacement car chargers don't work.

Funny, I just ran out to the truck & grabbed one of the guys Blackberry chargers & it looked like it was working. But SK Tools reports an even bigger (negative) amp draw (like discharging twice the normal rate). So with the BB charger it dischages even faster. Maybe reversed polarity Guess I should've checked first. That's a moot point now though as I await my new unit. Weird though.
Well i was using a BB charger that worked fine up until this morning. i bought my phone when it first came out so it wasnt easy to find a charger made for it at the time. i never had a problem until today. i also noticed that the Usb terminal on my device was bent. i called htc but they charge way too much to fix it. i have no idea how or when the terminal broke but it does still charge when pluged into pc or into the wall. ill have to spend $80 to have ppctechs fix it.
wassup, i`m in SF Cali, I had a att 8525 that was doing the same thing. I assumed it was the phone when it 1st started happening. After a week or so it was bothering me so i started playing with it trying to figure out if it was a setting, bad flash, or hardware. I noticed that if the phone was off it wood charge but not if it was on. I started flashing my phone and testing (for trouble shooting purposes) and for the first 2 or 3 roms problem still existed, then one of the roms i flashed to would turn on the back light as if it was charging but no LED or charge, when this started happening I realized that if i turned my fone off it wood start charging and continue to charge when i booted the fone back up. So if when i got in the car i pluged in/ shutdown/ waited like 45 sec or 1 min. / then booted it would temp. fix the problem for as long as my fone was on the cable. At some point after that many weeks/roms later i noticed it was working correctly again, So I had decided it was a glitch in the rom, But i`m not a Dev. or fone guru so I really dont know what it was, but hope this helps someone.... PEACE!! ~bboyphrog1~beatz`n pieces krooh~

The slight diagonal slant on the bottom right? It's supposed to be like that. All AT&T Tilts (and I'd assume TyTN II's, but I've never had one to compare) have a mini-usb port that looks that way.
i looked at a 8525 and the usb terminal was straight. i even took a pencil and straightened mine out. it should be bent. that wouldn't make sense because the charges slot is not bent. i think the problem is that one side of the terminal is not soldered to the board and can easily be broken. in another thread 3 people have the same issue. as far as the car charger goes ill do some testing but until today it was charging fine while the phone was on.
this issue is known ,it even happens with the htc tynt.... by simlpy rebooting while in the charger it starts working again ..at least with mine.
I've had the same problem. I went to the lcoal AT&T store and they said they never heard of it so I thought it was just me. It looks like many of you have the issue. I wish I knew what it was. It was really bad with my 8525,
i thought Faria developed a cab to fix this issue in the hermes forum? might be worth having a search for it and when i get home i will see if i have a copy on my pc.
any of you guys get anywhere with this? I have exactly the same problem. posted in a couple of other threads actually.
Not sure whether the usb port is damaged, but it's certainly is slightly "down" on the right hand side.
It charges perfectly on the mains and perfectly from usb, but not in the car.
I have used a normal car charger, spent £50 on a Carcomm powered mount and tried one of the separate chargers that you plug the standard mini usb cable into. Nothing works. This is driving me crazy (if you'll excuse the pun!) a the primary reason I bought the Kaiser, was for GPS.
Thanks
well i also just found out 2 of my minisync cables dont work anymore. 1 of them still charges the phone but neither of them sync the phone anymore. it still syncs fine through a normal usb cable.
I am using a moto Razr car charger and it works fine so far.
Okay, confirmed on my replacement Tilt: The USB port is arrow straight. Someone earlier mentioned it being lower on the right side & indeed my DEAD DEVICE was as such. Looks like a bad job of connecting the port to the device.
NOTE!!!!!!
It's a good idea to take a look at your charger before you plug it in to make sure the charger USB connector is not bent or mi-sshappened.
i have the same problem i went through 4 att car chargers adn 5 phones. They are crap. Its not the phone its the charger if you play with it you will see that it comes and goes. The end tip on the charger is bad doesnt make a good connection. i have yet to find a good car charger.
Mine stopped charging using the car charger supplied and a brodit. A friend's kaiser charges OK with the same chargers.
No-one has mentioned it in this thread, but my phone, shows "charging" in the battery control panel and the LED lights up to confirm this. The percentage charge value decreases as though it isn't being charged!
As others have done I noticed that the corner of the plastic centre of the connector nearest the reset hole was slightly bent and I assume (though can't remember doing so) that I missed the reset hole with the stylus tip and pushed it in. Menu driven resets for me from now on!
HTC Europe didn't know anything about this fault, so seem to be happy to repair / replace it under warranty. It's with them at the moment, so I'll have to wait and see.

Please let me know the outcome. mine is getting worse by the day.
Now I'm confused.
Because the device charges over USB I just assumed it would draw <500mA (the max output of a USB port) but the specs say it draws up to one amp.
Having owned a high-drawing device before (Axim x50v) I know that trying to pull this out of a USB port can blow your motherboard. So are these safe to charge over USB??? How does the device know whether its being charged over USB or mains - are there different charging pins on the connector?

Galaxy Gear won't charge or turn on

I've seen several threads about this in the past month on other websites with no solutions so it seems to be a common issue.
The problem I'm having is that after not using my gear for a few days it refuses to charge or turn on. Not even a flicker when the charger is attached. Tried two different cords. Pins are clean and lined up. Left it plugged in overnight several times. Anyone else having or had this issue? Thanks
I don't have an answer for the problem at hand but I would like to stay updated with this thread. I'm looking into getting one very soon.

Yes but since the unit is completely dead it has no effect
Here are some other threads where users are having the same issue:

After trying a third cord for a Samsung blue tooth headset I finally got the gear to show it is charging and states 60% battery. Very strange. Tried turning it on and resetting it several times beforehand too so even though it had charge it was temporarily bricked. Hope this doesn't happen again
I had an similar experience the other day, the clock wouldn't start/charge or react to the power button. After i repeatedly tried to hold the powerbutton i finally rebooted. I suspect the gear was actually on, but that the system froze. Was about to do the surgery to remove the battery to check when it booted up

I recently had this issue with one of my gear.this problem comes when you leave you watch on and battery drains and you don't charge for couple of weeks.I think it has something to do motherboard.only way to fix this is to replace battery which has juice in it.that's how I got mine working.I replaced the battery from my working watch and it started working and the dead battery I took out put in my other watch also started charging and working.this is a factory defect and Samsung should replace it free lifetime of watch instead of one year.

I found that if you take the Galaxy Gear apart and disconnect the power from the motherboard then plug back in and put the gear back together has got them to turn back on almost every time just give it a charge for a few minutes. This will fix it as long as the issue was not due to rooting to trying to put a custom ROM on the Gear. There is a few videos on YouTube that can help you take it apart.
- I work for Samsung experience shop and i have run into this issue often and just about every time this has fixed it.
- sorry for late response hope your back in the business with the Gear.
I've had this issue with wall chargers and did some reading online. Someone suggested to plug it into a computer/laptop usb port.
I plugged it into the laptop and walked away and guess what? It's charging. I tried many different chargers varying in ratings but nothing worked
Try leaving it plugged into the pc for a good while. After two days of trying various chargers, my gear is back up and running
Had this issue as well. I tried a series of taps to the power button followed by a hold and it eventually turned on and has been working fine since.
tap - hold
tap tap - hold
tap tap tap - hold
eventually it will come on, i cant remember how many taps it was when it finally reset.
Hi had this issue also spent 3 hours trying to figure it out as had just got gear out of its box at very first plugging charger in a quick image appeared on screen then off after that nothing. Eventually being as carefully as possible while gear was in charging dock still plugged in i opened the lid not once did i move gear off contacts but did give sight wiggle then it came to life appears to me its a docking problem of some sort. of course I DON'T RECOMMEND opening lid while charging but thought id pass on what i figured out do at your own risk, I hope this helps others with this issue
Thanx

Gear Watch Charging FIXED!
Thanks to this thread I am very happy!
Just bought a 2nd hand Gear Watch at auction. No idea about how they work and wondered why it wouldn't switch on or respond when charging. Just a black screen regardless of which charger or cable was connected. Read above about disconnecting the power from the motherboard so watched this youtube video on tear down ( won't let me post the full link but this is the video number... v=5WzGC0786U0 )
Luckily had a small 'star' toolset available. Pulled the watch apart... disconnected the power...reconnected the power...reassembled the watch... plugged into the charger and voila! Instantly showed up on the screen with an orange timer and then went black (held my breath) then came on with the battery symbol with 0% charge. Looking at it as I write...touched the screen and now has 10% charge (only been about 5 minutes).
Looking forward to playing with it when fully charged Thank you to the contributors to this thread. I thought I'd been ripped off...but now it seems I'm the one who has scored a working Gear Watch for £20 )))
mine started working on its own... strangely enough.
taking the advice from this thread, i looked into alternate ways to get my Galaxy Gear up and running. I tried cleaning the metal tabs that connect, tried opening the holster while it was plugged in, nothing. i didn't have a star kit to take it apart, so i left it on the charger while i could go find one. thing is, i completely forgot about it, since i've got the Gear 2 for my S5. i was cleaning around my desk and bumped into the gear which fell over and showed that it was at 100% charged capacity. beforehand, it was completely dead, despite the fact that i left it on the charger for a solid 24 hours and no response. maybe it just needed a little more time on there, who knows. but i powered it on, and it's fully functioning. the only drawback is that it needs a factory reset since it was without power for so long. i could connect it as an accessory to my S5, but i couldn't use it in the place of my Gear 2 as it's been rooted/running a _null ROM, and the Gear Manager software has been updated a few times. i'm going to factory reset it and pair it with my Note 3, and see if _null has an updated version of his ROM out there. but i figured i'd let someone know my experience in case it might help in some way.
Fixed it !

Just to share my experience, I left my gear about 2 months discharged, today I tried to charge it and nothing. I tried everything, clean, connect, disconnect etc, so, I pulled the watch apart and disconnected the power etc and everything is working fine now, charging as usual.
Here's what worked for me
I read on another site to try a piece of paper folded and put next to the on button so when the charging cradle is snapped closed it pushes it down. I just tried it and after many days of a dead gear watch....ta da! Success. Now it's on and charging. Take the paper out once it starts to reboot otherwise it will just cycle over and over. Hope this helps someone else. It's tricky to fit just right...i folded a tiny piece of post it note ...good luck. Penelope

I had the same problem: the gear is dead and not charging with a wall charger after leaving the gear for more than 1 month unused. I followed ph00ny's advice and tried to charge it via usb and it immediately started to charge. So before taking it apart I suggest try it out with usb charger.
Cheers
Stopped my gear update by shutting off my phone and now gear wont power on
I have been trying everything to get it to turn on.... (holding down the power button, tap and hold, charging with USB) nothing is working. Don't have a star driver to open it up, but may have to invest in one.
Anyone have the same issue? This is driving me crazy!

Bingooooooo, It's paradoxal All you have to do when the battery is left drained for a couple of days is to start charging on a Laptop or a desktop with a s4 usb cord for about 10 mn then you continue charge if you like with à wall charger

Oddly enough this is nothing but the truth. Funny enough. I lost my charger dock thingamajig recently and not one hour ago i started making my own out of a 2x4, and a few bits laying around. Was sad to see gear wouldnt charge or boot. tried different chargers and nothing. I read everything and saw this and didnt think to try as im only running two wires to charge my gear, as those with homemade chargers know. Plugged it into a laptop and boom. charging... please someone explain to me the theory behind this. and dont say the current as i even tried 500ma and 250ma chargers to no avail. how does a pc usb magically do it without data lines connected.... so confused..

[Q] Galaxy Gear Won't Charge

I have checked out the other older help threads from ~Jan, none seem to work.
The problem is the gear died, I didn't have the charger as I was on a trip around the end of March. I haven't chraged it since as I could not order a charger because I was on a trip! I'm back now, ordered a replacement charger and the gear will not charge.
The gear will occasionally on plug-in display a hourglass and a loading circle, but then go away shortly thereafter. Then it sits like a brick and won't show any signs of life.
Any help is appreciated!

You should check your cable - try different ones. Some of my cables dont work properly. (I fear the cat is using them to exercise her teeth on - I can see little holes). If possible, connect to a wall charger/high ampage charger - some USB chargers or cables or laptops - give out too tiny a current, and it might take a while to get anything out of it.
Hope you get it sorted.
While on the charger, try holding down the power button for 10 seconds and see if it resets. If not, plug the usb cable into a computer and see if it will kick into sync mode.

If you're saying you're using a replacement 'cradle', that may have something to do with it. I have read elsewhere that people have experienced issues (no charge, no nfc, no pairing) with replacement cradles. Try the original manufacturer's equipment if possible.

Yeah, I'm not holding out hope for Samsung NZ helping, so it's gonna cost a bit to send it back to the states for RMA.
I was soo excited when it arrived but no.
If you got it from Google they would provide return shipping of the defective watch.
The only thing is they actually ask you to go through the motion of purchasing a second watch, so if they do not get the original watch back they would charge you after I think 20 days.
Me I called them,
They emailed me the instructions, UPS label.
I clicked on the link ordered the replacement.
Taped up the original defective watch, used the supplied UPS label.
Dropped the box at UPS drop box location.
They sent out the replacement the same day.
The original defective watch arrived at Google in two days.
Got an email the cost of the replacement watch was completely refunded.
Got the new working watch in 3 days.
Now you being overseas may complicate things.
I know NZ does not use 110volts 60hz, the power could be an issue but I sound like you dealt with this issue before. (Can not see why the Gear adapter would not work) it should supply the same required 5v DC, USB is universal.

Was playing around with it and it turned on for a second and showed the logo, gonna leave it on charge, may just be completely flat after shipping for a while, took almost a month to receive it.
I saw a video on YouTube where the watch was already turned on out of the box. Maybe your are in the same situation, most likely due the delayed delivery.
Mine comes o 5 August in Romania, ordered from Google Play. Can I use the charger that comes with Gear Live with an adapter? I bought a Nexus 4 from US a year ago and I used it only with the adapter and original charger, no problems until now.

I have found that the Live does not like chargers that put out 2.1a. I've also found that 1a basic chargers are hit and miss.
I'm currently using a charger that puts out 1.8a and everything works perfectly.
Sent it back under warranty and have a new one on it's way, hope it's a good one.
I have run into the same thing. I had a Gear Live delivered last month and I didn't have time to unbox it until yesterday. It wouldn't turn on so I used the charger that came with it. When I plugged it into AC power it showed a battery charging indicator on the screen. I waiting until morning and it would not power on.
I have tried the following:
AC Power with original charger
AC Power with charger from another Gear Live (which works)
USB power from Desktop with both chargers
USB power from MBP with both chargers
USB power from 1 mA battery pack with original charger
USB power from 0.5 mA battery pack with original charger
Holding down the button for 3, 5, 10, 15, 30 seconds many different times
What am I missing?! I guess I might have to make a warranty claim at this point, but I was planning on giving it away as a prize at a big Android DevFest event tomorrow!
same problem here
i bought the watch in July
days ago i removed from the charger as usual to find that was dead
i try all sort of thing nothing happen
i need to call for warranty if not solution come in

The problem is that the charging port does not make direct contact with the battery, it actually runs through the main board and then to the battery which is only connected by exposed contacts, in other words the battery is not actually plugged in, it's just one half of the watch sandwiched up against the other half containing the main board and all the other components.
To fix this problem of the watch not responding to the power button or to charging, you need to disconnect the battery from the main board, like isaid it is not actually plugged in so all you have to do is take the watch apart for aminute and put it back together. This will reinitiate the connection and it WILL start working again. If you go to ifixit.com there is a good teardown guide which is all you need. It is only four screws and than the only hard part is separating the two halves but that's it.
all good is working for me
thank you for your help

Galaxy Gear Battery Not Charging

Hey everyone. So upon switching from Apple to Android, I remembered the Galaxy Gear I had and was enthralled to try it out once again.
I tried using the cradle that it used to charge on - Quick screen flash but didn't charge.
Took it apart, pulled the battery, put it back together, threw it on the charger - Didn't charge.
Took the cradle apart (3rd party one as I got this from a friend), cleaned the contacts, put it back together - Still nothing.
Lost the cradle parts so I stripped a spare Samsung microUSB cord, pulled the battery out, put the 2 wires on the correct contacts of the chip that is attached to the battery, held them in place whilst having everything still plugged in - Still nothing.
Tried charging it with a wireless Samsung charging pad - Still nothing.
I'm left with all the components of the watch, everything except the cradle. I was wondering if there was a way to charge the battery separate from the watch, maybe putting the actual battery directly on the wireless charging pad and seeing if it will charge, or if I could take the screen portion with the opposing contacts that lead to the mobo and see if anything happens. No, don't have money for a newer one. No, don't have money for another battery/cradle. Any ideas? I really like this watch. It was working fine a month ago. It was rooted with nullrom but I restored it w/Odin and it worked like new. I left it uncharged for a week or so and when I wanted to use it again, wouldn't charge.
Same problem i left my gear for 2 weeks without charging and now it doesn't charge
I too have had this problem. What seems to work (worked for me) is to charge you watch from a desktop/laptop usb port.
I had this problem . Thinking about it, I hasn't used the watch in over a month. I bought a third party charger for about $5 from amazon and it charged it fine. All is well with the world again
Some problem here. The only thing that works its charging with my laptop.
