Some questions about root and roms - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was never into following what is going on with smartphones. So i have a few questions so that i dont feel lost.
So i want to root my phone. I have done it before, its pretty simple, i will just follow the guide. Are there any reported bricks coming out because of rooting moto g2 or is it relatively safe?
Then since i was going to do a hard reset for the root i thought about using another ROM. I dont generally know anything about mods. I only know the famous cyanogen mod. Is it working good with moto g2? Are there any problems? Is development ongoing? I think i saw a guide but i missed the link btw.
Now i generally dont care about my phone looking great with 3D stuff and gimmicks for showing. I want it to be as fast as it can be and ready to do as many things as it can. Thats why i am rooting it btw. So that i can do things that unrooted wont permit me and so that i can block adds for example in order to make it a bit faster and less power/data draining.
So is the CM mod okay with what i need?
And finally, since lollipop is coming out, should i wait for it to be available before i do anything in case that there would be a lollipop CM for moto g 2 or this would probably take too much time so i better do the hard reset now? Btw i am not sure if CM mod can be upgraded without hard reset in which case i am good to go.
P.S. I am not even sure if CM is really better than official. Any hints why it is better?
Thanks for your time.

U can easily root without brick.

No bricks reported from rooting only so far. It's a relatively safe procedure. CM12 is still in it's early days. Across all devices there are still various bugs. If you like to try lollipop there are two possibilities. Wait for ota (be sure to unroot and restore stock recovery. OTA won't install if you are rooted or have a custom recovery). Or you can try TitanPrimeROM (not the cm version). Its based on stock and runs quite nicely.

Thank you for the replies.
So i think i am going to just root the phone. But i wanna ask why is this thread locked? Is there any problems with this guide?

Dont take tention root the device.

Damn i just rooted it with 2.7.1.1 cause i saw there were backs with the one i posted but couldnt find a more recent one.
I guess i will have to do it again... Thanks though!
And one final question, every time i want to change a rom it is like doing a hard reset right? There isnt anything like backup or something that will help me keep apps and data while changing roms.

You can try Titanium Backup.. It allows you to backup your apps and reload them in a new ROM..

Reset to new

So i rooted my phone using the universal root in this forum, the day after i accidentally updated android and it broke the root, also i have noticed some bugs. I am trying to put the phone back to how it was when i got it in the post. i tried a "factory data reset" but it didnt do what i am trying to do, just deleted all the apps etc. Any ideas how i can do this? I dont mind if i have root access still.
Cheers!
Read my signature, the bigger link. I'm sure you'll find the info on rooting FRG83 there (because I've put it there).
Okay i think i need some help, i have downloaded the official rom an put it on the sd card but cant work out how to flash it, im holding down the track ball and resetting but cant see the option to flash anything, is this because it wasnt rooted properly where android updated?
this sux on an epic scale. when my phone was ****ed.. no one posted with a signature that had information about how to install stuff to phone without unlocking bootloader .
grrr...
dude read the wiki... its all there
Ive been reading this tutorial: /showthread.php?t=614850 but not sure how to run the commands on steps 8 - 13

I supposed my post would say it clearly enough that your idea of restoring the ROM to the older version won't work.
Just managed to root it, then got totally lost, might have to leave it like this..
Yes, that was the idea. Root it, and stay with it. If you post the bugs, they might have solutions / workarounds.
Plus, it might be a good time to try custom ROM Or even customized plain FRF91 you were looking for.

Can someone clear a few things up for me?

I'm pretty new to rooting and flashing. My bionic is my first android or smart phone at all for that matter. A couple weeks ago I rooted and flashed r3blurr3d 1.7 and have been running that pretty happily. I want to flash the new SHIFT3R base and one of the PAX but a couple things have me extremely confused.
According to my phone information I am running system version 5.5.892. I'm reading all these posts about the radio and kernel upgrades and that forever root is needed and such and clearly i'm missing something. Do I need to flash back to stock and do OTA updates before moving forward with SHIFT3R and such? I've been looking for a step by step on what to do to get my phone up to date AND running one of these ROMS but im really freaking confused.
I sound like a huge noob to this and I am. Just looking for some guidance.
EDIT: What I think I understand is I need to flash to go back to stock 5.886, flash 7.893, and proceed from there. Is that correct?

Good questions and its always better to ask first and thought a noob, than to come back here looking for info on how to fix a brick.
Alot of people here have great information. However, take the time to understand root and flashing before you go too much further. Root sounds scary but really isn't. Flashing sounds dangerous but really isn't....if you know what you're doing and not do anything you're unsure of.
take the time to read the FAQ's about rooting and flashing. Understand Recovery. know what Kernel and baseband mean. It won't take long. There's a decent FAQ about How to Root in this sub forum. Over in the DEV forum, there are a couple of threads about how to do this.
You do NOT need a new kernel to flash...though a ROM may come with one or require it.
you should understand Recovery before flashing. This is a MUST.
Make your backups. With Recovery and backups, you almost always have a way home.
And absolutely, no matter how stupid it sounds, ASK THOSE QUESTIONS.
I'm new to Bionic so I can't help you with details about this phone, yet. However, I'm not new to Android and I'm not new to Rooting for Flashing. It sounds like you know enough to get in trouble. So, go back to those FAQ,s and understand the basics now, you won't have problems later.
good luck.

I figured out my bionic specific question but thanks so much for the advice. When you talk about backups I hear about nandroid backups and thats something I haven't done, is that what everyone does and what I should be doing? If so, what does a nandroid backup do for me and when should I backup?

Nandroid backup is done through clockwork recovery (CWR aka CWM).
It backs up your entire system exactly as it is so if you ever mess something up, you can just restore that backup and your phone will come out exactly how it was when you made that backup (system settings, apps, preferences, SMS/MMS, everything)

As Tivo explained, its Clockwork Recovery. If you do not have this installed, it should be your next step. With CWR you create the nandoids mentioned before. These are your lifeline in case of a bad flash. You can always go backwards if you have them.
I'm surprised you've rooted and flashed with out having a custom recovery installed. In most root instructions, recovery is almost always mentioned up front.

[Q] How to update my phone's firmware?

Hi there guys. As you probably noticed,i'm new here,so pardon me if my question sounds noobish at the time, but I promise I'll learn from you guys! Thanks!
So,the question's simple. How do I update my phone's firmware? Don't wanna brick or possibly damage my phone here,as I just bought a couple of days ago. So,is there any risk to update the phone's firmware? Thanks bros!
Have you use search features before asking this question?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111771
Yeah, saw that already, but it seems to convoluted for me. I need a one-to-one kinda reply. Honestly,I didn't understand anything that was written on that page. So,could please someone clarify it in a more simple, noobish, way?
Thanks bro!
pdf guides are included in the kit. just follow them
either you can use KDZ or R&D for the official
or flash any custom ROM with CWM
(the tutor is already out there)
and the risk ? bootloop or brick maybe
Thanks bros! And another thing, what are custom ROMs? I keep hearing about it like Cyanogen? What's the upside for using it?

Custom roms in simple terms are unofficial versions of the o/s modified or "cooked" by people who want to add or remove certain features or performance tweaks. The upside is you can find a ROM that suits your usage and aesthetic preferences. For more info read through some ROM threads and compare their features.
However there is always a chance something could go wrong even if you know what you are doing. So my advice would be to read and re read the instructions from rooting to flashing radios to flashing roms and look up the termanology until you think you understand and then read it all again. There are some good guides around that can givevyou the basics.
Otherwise you can wait until your carrier releases a official update.
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda premium
Thanks for clarifying bros!
And another thing,I just saw this vid at Youtube.
It's called "How To Install CyanogenMod 7 On Your Android Device"
I can't post the link here because im still new, haha!
Is it really that easy to install Cyanogenmod on your phone? But your phone have to be rooted first, right?
I saw the list with the firmware from various countries, but not mine,Malaysia. How do I solve this? I'm still suck with V10-a,which i think is the oldest firmware for OB.
Also, what are these baseband, kernel and build number thingies? Anything important? Thanks! Really starting to get interested in these things!
I think the following is related to malayians so you have to use an indonesian firmware :
http://csmg.lgmobile.com:9002/csmg/b2c/client/tool_mode_country_check.jsp?model=LGP970&country=MY
- you can flash firmwares anytime whatever the situation
- to flash a ROM (cyanogen, nova...) you need the custom recovery mod called ClockworkMod alias CWM (available on the market via ROM Manager app, or my kit)
- and for CWM, root access is needed
once phone is rooted and CWM installed, phone potential is extended to the infinite. you can then install a lot of useful apps of more and customize your phone.
I think the general goal of all of that, is to optimize and extend possibilities as far as possible and then you'll be able to say that you "truly own" your phone
Thanks for clearing that up bro. BTW,would you recommend me using Gingerbreak to root my phone? Since i'm using an older firmware,it should be ok,right?
no problem, blackjack should do it too. do as your feeling

2 steps : root, flash recovery.
know that you'll have to use an app to boot into recovery (ROM manager, anreboot, ezboot...) take a look at my thread for more infos

Ouh,wow, did that felt stupid, haha. So what you're saying is,after rooting my phone,I should get to installing ClockWorkMod Recovery,am I right? And the only way to install it is using the computer, connect it with the phone, and execute the UPK that you have provided in your download link. After that,I use the app,EzBoot,to boot into recovery mode,is this correct?
After that, what will I do in the recovery mode? Thankies again!
all right. as I said earlier, the recovery mode extends phone potential in an easy way. many ROMs and mods must be did via recovery. in fact, CWM helps you flashing files, roms, doing backups/restorations and more. jump the step and see by yourself.
don't forget to backup before anything

By backing up,you mean backing up contacts and internal memory stuffs, right?
All right! Will root my phone as soon as my charge hits 100%! Using gingerbreak! Is the root reverse-able? I mean, can I unroot my phone once I root it?
you don't need 100% battery as long phone is plugged. for now, blackjack doesn't have a reverse process. but gingerbreak, yes, considering the fact you stay on v10a/b. you may try with the new superoneclick. the most radical method is still flashing a firmware (so you'll lose all stuffs)
and yes, backup any saveable thing. although CWM saves all datas, more safety is more safe

[Q] RUU

Hi, I did a lot of things with my One Mini 2 and I actually really don't know what to do anymore... So much options and yet there always seems to be a problem. Let me explain everything.
What I did:
-flashed a custom rom, then went back to a stock rom of this forum
-flashed the dt2w kernel, it messed up my phone so I then flashed the liberty one, which worked
But with the liberty one I had some memory problems, for exemple I couldn't take screenshots... That's why I decided that I wanted to put my phone just as it was when I bought it, I really hope that's possible, by that I mean having official firmwares etc, therefore being able to do official upgrades from my phone (is that what OTA is?).
I looked on internet and it looks like what I need is RUU, as it includes everything (from what I understood)... I know a lot of threads were made about this, but quite a few months ago, so that's why I'm making a new one, and to make things clear.
Also, I downloaded an official kernel from htcdev.com, but each time I tried flashing it with TWRP, it "failed".
So, if you guys have an answer, solution or, in best case, the actual RUU, that would be great.
Thanx

Still no RUU's avaiable as HTC wont release them. your best option is to use TWRP backup and restore.

Thank you, but my backup kind of disappeared... I saw your post where there was the "HTC Original Backup.zip", I tried to flash but again it failed... Am I supposed to flash it as a backup?

You need to send it as it is to your phone and use TWRP > restore. choose file and done.
Thanx so much for answering... I uses the backup you told me to. Although I had to use the "install" option instead of the backup one, it now works perfectly! But how do I know if my phone is "official"? Are the upgrades going to be made straight from the phone?

Hi, I just want to check this too before I screw up wife's phone..
She has CM12 on her phone now as I replaced recovery as well as unlocking bootloader. Now she wants it back to stock as too many things crash on her. I get that I can install your backup but what worries me is that other posts have said you need the stock recovery to allow for OTA updates to work and the link to this no longer works.
She MUST have OTA updates or my balls will be removed, so can you please confirm this, but also explain why.
Thanks (on behalf of my testicles and unborn children!)
(Oh, and she wants it unrooted ant the bootloader relocked)

I don't know why it is so hard to follow instructions. Most people got it working, sure it's not so straightforward if you have never flashed any ROM before, but only a few really had any problem after a few tries. Easiest way to switch is by flashing ROM, and maybe you can describe a bit more what problem you are facing so the rest of us can help more.

I don't think you are familiar enough with how to flash rom or root to do this. You don't have to be rooted to flash stable CN rom, and your BL already unlock if you purchased from third party seller that put EU rom.
If you want stable CN for OTA, just flash it through twrp. Now if you don't know how to do that, then refer to the guide. But I still don't really know which step you are stuck in..
I rooted many phones and many Roms thru around 5 years. But taht was on android and Samsung, LG etc. Only xiaomi is ridiculous. Nothing is clear, so many problems, etc.
BL is not unlocked like I said many times.
And again... Is possible to switch from dev to stable with locked bl, no twrp, no root, etc. just like i received phone. If yes please give me guide. If not please tell me ten il think if I should stay with this BS, open bl or instal twrp.
Xiaomi is one of the easiest phone to root and flash rom for me, compare to Samsung and HTC, if you want guide, I can link the same link again, but I am sure you have seen already. The guide was super easy to follow so if you think it's BS how xiaomi works, move on to next phone I guess.
The community here won't be very big, not many people would have the chance to have this phone, maybe you need those video guide to tell you what to do step by step, which I doubt people here would do.
And to he honest, the written guide had absolutely everything you need. If you want the phone to be locked, not rooted and no custom recovery, you can remove all these after you flash china stable rom.
Still no answer. .. love it
Marry Christmas and happy bday bitpie
What's the question exactly? You looking for a guide to flash stable rom?
I understand the question, is there away to flash without TWRP like other XIAOMI phones? go into EDL mode and flash via miflash no root or unlocked BL needed. Sadly I don't know the answer still waiting for my phone which was shipped 12/12/16.

Yes there many ways many threads about it. But what i see is root, twrp, open bl.
What i think is someone can answer simply question
And again... Is possible to switch from dev to stable with locked bl, no twrp, no root, etc. just like i received phone.
And #3 and #5
Who's is arrogant here? From the beginning i was nice and grateful. Then i don't know if you all play with me or you are stupid to answer "yes it is possible here's how .. " , "yes this guide give you what you need. Don't worry your phone not gonna be rooted and you'll have updates or you'll be able to install update via updater or mi flash", " if you have twrp your phone still is safe and can update to 8.0.11
for example.
So hard to make me sure I'll have what I want. Is better to say bs like through all thread
:good:
I am sorry if you feel this way, but you could have just do a quick Google Search, to answer your question short, which I have done before already, you can flash whatever you want, no need root, and you can lock BL afterwards. And you can also remove recovery if you wish too so it will look like stock phone purchased directly from xiaomi. So this way you can use bank app and be on CN rom (with tones of bloatware) and get OTA which is btw nothing as the moment OTA is available, it will be ported for the rest of us to flash.
I can provide the answer to you, but please just search the steps, not gonna be bother writing a guide as it is pretty well research and written here on XDA already. Sorry for being lazy, but it's your phone so I think the least you can do is search and put in a bit of work.
P. S. I understand if you want to use bank apps so you need BL to be locked and not rooted, but I don't understand what's so important to be able to update from OTA, it's not like the rest of us can't get update, it's easy to flash update...
Thank You for normal answer.
Like I said before I was fighting with it few days many many hours and everything was mixed up in my head. I tried many apps, roms, ways google, read etc. Was enough. Then I decide to create a thread what turned out even for worst. That's why I want to ask 2 or even 3 times before I do anything. Want to make sure because last days I had no idea what I was doing
About the OTA .. I understand if ill have ota updates ill have most stable rom. Correct me if I'm wrong. That what I actually want. Stable rom. Want to have a phone like you described. Normal stable for every day use. no blootware, lag, bugs etc. At least at the moment. Then ill think about root, roms, etc. For now normal phone like from xiaomi in English

Let's take the bloatware part away first, if you are using Google Play and google apps, the most stable rom isn't official rom and no OTA will give you more stability because quite simply, there are no google support in China. So I strongly suggest you flash EU rom for 0 issue google service usage if stability is what you want.
On the other hand, official Chinese rom will always be slightly more up to date, with camera improvement patch... Etc. But it soon get ported to EU one anyway. And nothing is game changing on Chinese rom for us to really stick to it.
Now back to bloatware, there are tones of them in Chinese rom, which you can remove most but if you don't know how, it make the phone less reliable, and even if you successfully remove all, I would still think the EU one being more stable.
The fact is, most of us are not running Chinese rom should explain why it's really a good idea to make some effort and port to EU one.
I hope that helps to convince you not to go back to Chinese rom. It is however your choice after all
