Ok I have been reading a couple of forums and some people say you can out a custom recovery on the active and some say you would only brick your phone trying. I have it rooted, I would like to try a custom ROM but I am used to the galaxy s3 and the htc one m8 in the way of custom Roms which are easy to do.

depending on which active you have if you have the international version with the unlocked bootloader your good with custom roms but if you have the at&t model I537 that had a locked bootloader you can not run custom roms on it.

I'd like to clarify a bit. Yes the AT&T model has a locked bootloader and yes this restricts what you can do on the phone, but that doesn't mean you can't have custom roms on this phone. You can't have a true custom recovery BUT there is something you can install called Safestrap that gives you virtually all the functionality of a custom recovery (plus it's based directly off TWRP so it looks and feels like a recovery). As far as roms, well, you can't install cyanogenmod or anything AOSP. Any rom you flash needs to have a stock kernel and be stock-based. There are very few roms written specifically for the i537, BUT you can install certain S4 roms using this patch to make them compatible.

Not much really. You can make nandroid backups so if you do mess up you can always restore. There haven't been any bugs with the last build and as long as you're using it to flash software meant for the i537 (or S4 roms with the masterpatch) it's perfectly safe. Honestly the only danger I can really envisage-and this would apply to any custom recovery-sometimes things take a long time to flash, you just have to make sure to have at least 70% battery when doing anything in recovery, having your battery die mid-flash would probably be bad. Sorry for my rambling answer, the main point is it is just as safe as a custom recovery on another device.

1. Make sure you do a wipe if coming from another rom
2. Flash in recovery
3. reboot(I suggest TWRP)
4. profit
It seems people on older firmware are having issues with wifi. This is due to your old firmware. If you are not S-off you will have to wait for your carrier to release updated firmware. There is nothing that can be done about it. :-/
If you have problems make sure you do a full wipe.. if you continue to have problems you need to be as detailed as possible.. What version firmware are you running? What ROM are you coming from? Are you bootloader unlocked? you need details.. if you don't give details you're more likely to get a better answer as to why it doesn't work from the fortune teller on the corner.
Also, please do not PM me for support. PM's will not be answered. Post it in the thread. It helps other's having the same issue find a solution. If it's over PM it only benefits you and not everyone else

Hi Graffixnyc, long time after s3. So I have att version and I am unlocking bootloader right now. i will install recovery after that and then, will this run on ATT version like a regular flash from recovery?

seems super laggy to me, even the bootanimation. did a full wipe to.
I'm having issues as well with lots of lag and no camera or wifi.
odd, im flashed the backup version and its perfect
Will this work on the dev edition

It didn't seem laggier to me.. But I have since restored my data.. Let me try with a fresh system wipe and play with it for a bit
Seems fine to me.. I wiped and flashed and it doesnt seem laggy to me so far.. I'll keep playing with it but it seems just as good as the cwm back up version for me
Trying to install via PhilZ CWM and getting this:
Creating links and setting perms...
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
Edit: redownloading, checking sums and such.
Yup did a full wipe. Laggy. Lock screen, waking, sleeping and drawer

Fixed it. Had to specifically format /data for some reason. A full wipe wasn't cutting it.
Running smoothly here. Full wipe using Philz. Well chose the Install new rom option or whatever it's called. No lag!
Though question.. Since this is just the stock GPE ROM, does that include the stock recovery? Philz came up saying that the ROM may try to flash a recovery on boot and whether I want this to happen.. chose no.. but not sure what's going on.

You were correct to chose no. It doesn't flash a recovery. Chainfire uses the install-recovery.sh script file for root purposes. twrp knows about this I believe since chainfire works directly with dees troy..
Build.prop changes?
I feel like my new M8 is almost perfect. Going from AT&T bloatware to a almost Nexus experience! Thank you so much for the hard work! One question and hopefully it isn't a noob question but I always change my LCD density down to 380 as I feel stock is huge! Do we need S-off to be able to change that in build.prop as I can edit it but it doesn't change anything. Thanks in advance for any info.
Hey guys! My apologies if this is a redundant question, but I just wanted to be sure:
If ASUS decides to actually put out an official KitKat update for this thing eventually, would I still be able to try it out / install it normally *after* I've unlocked?
If so, what exactly would be my procedure? Will I be blocked from getting or installing the OTA, or would the process be no different?
There's been some great progress it seems on custom ROMs for this thing. I'm a bit gun shy admittedly, as running custom ROMs on previous devices led to a lot of instability. I guess I want to ensure I'll still have the option to try out a future official build if I choose. Thanks in advance!

Yes you will definitely be able to update to KitKat once released. However you won't be able to get the OTA update automatically sent to ur tab once u unlock it. But its pretty simple to get it. After Asus has pushed the ota to devices, the also upload the firmware to their website. U would simple download that and place it in the root of ur internal SD, and reboot. Tab will recognize the update, and give u notification for installing it. And u continue with that. Very simple.
And as for the Roms , the cromix ROM is by far very stable ROM. I have tried it for very long time, and has no issues at all, and the plus side is u can do a lot of customizations yet the ROM still runs faster than stock. I strongly recommend cromix ROM.

This is not 100% true. The current official ROM will only flash with the stock recovery installed and not a custom one, so I would assume the same for any update.
It's not an issue to flash the stock recovery back but it will be an extra step.
Also if and when an official KitKat comes out you will more than likely have to wait until a new recovery is made that is compatible for a custom ROM after that.

And this is very likely 100% true.
I never understand why people are pining for the stock rom - no matter which version or update....
I would feel helpless and lost with only the stock recovery! Lately I've been trying to help several people on stock firmware with corrupted data, no custom recovery, no root, locked bootloader.... You're toast!
All you can do is send it in to Asus and pay a bundle! Whereas unlocked you just fire up fastboot or custom recovery and start to fix it!
Besides - once Asus releases a KK version for this tablet you can bet your.... house that sbdags will have a custom version of it out in no time. And it's going to be better than Asus firmware, receive frequent updates, can be flashed with a custom recovery....
A no-brainer IMHO

Alright, so I've enjoyed modding my Android devices since I got my first Android running on 2.2, especially because of the options to tweak CPU usage, and just (from what I have noticed) better general usage with all of my devices. I purchased this phone because of it's similar power usage to the S4 and it being water & dust resistant. However, most of the development that I have seen for this forum has been for the i9525, which is the international version. I have the i537, and have been going crazy with battery drainage issues, and I think only a custom kernel/new ROM can fix this. Could somebody point me in the right direction of where to go? I've heard talk that after MF2, installing Safestrap right now is essentially not possible, due to bootloader issues.

SafeStrap works for every version of firmware for the i537, you just need to use the proper version. If you're on ML2 I think you need 3.71, but please check to make sure because I could be wrong. As for a custom kernel or tweaking the CPU, it's not going to be possible on the i537 because the bootloader is locked and you are forced to use the stock kernel. You can try a custom ROM through SafeStrap, but I don't think it's going to help much. You might be better off upgrading the NE3 or NH3 and trying a custom ROM through SafeStrap there.

So essentially until we get the bootloader unlocked and can install a custom recovery (Like CWM or TWRP, instead of using SafeStrap), no "real" custom ROMs? More just ROMs based off of the stock kernel/modem/etc.?

Correct, and most of the people who were leading the development and research of unlocking the bootloader have decided to move on to other things within the last week. At this point it looks like the bootloader will never be unlocked. There's always a slim chance but it's not looking good.

Click this link and make sure you only use the files labelled for the SGH-I537 US (AT&T) Active
Stay away from the international threads, a lot of their custom development won't work on your phone. The only "custom recovery" that won't brick your phone is SafeStrap and there isn't a huge selection of roms; the best choices right now are GoldenEye, Goldfinger, or Hyperdrive (if you like the touchwiz experience) and Pure Nexus if you prefer the AOSP look and feel

Hyperdrive if you like touchwiz - Samsung's version of Android, how stock Samsung phones look but with more theming and customization, or
Pure Nexus if you like AOSP, so-called "vanilla" android, closest to how google makes android actually look (closest to the cyanogenmod look and feel). This rom (in both theming and overall experience) is based off of the Google Play Edition Galaxy S4.
Other than that there aren't many options. I would argue at the very least those are the two with the most support or ongoing development, although someone please correct me if I'm forgetting any others. Which of the two roms you choose I think really comes down to a fundamental personal preference: do you prefer Touchwiz or AOSP? Although again, someone chime in if you disagree with my assessment.
Im looking forward to install the Nexus room. I actually like more AOSP better than TouchWiz . Do i have to install the Google applications seperate or is already included on the room and SuperSU app?

Good questions. You do not have to install the Google applications, they're included in the rom. You WILL however have to install SuperSU while installing the rom. Simply download UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip and flash it immediately after flashing the rom zip file (i.e. before you first boot up).
If you prefer AOSP over TouchWiz, definitely go with the Nexus rom. Just some notes, the first boot up will take a fairly long time, this is normal and just be patient. Actually it takes a while (I'd say up to a day or two) for the rom to really "settle in." And one noticeable bug that's easy to deal with: turn off Wi-Fi right before you either power off or reboot. If you don't do that, Wi-Fi will not work properly. Should you forget to do that, Wi-Fi can still be fixed with a hot reboot. So not a crippling bug, just something to keep track of. Other than that I can't think of anything, just good luck and make sure to always make backups before doing anything. It's always my pleasure to help whenever I can
bricked???
Can someone please help! My phone is showing the message: Update failed try again using kies ( or something very close to that), it won't enter recovery mode, all I can get to is Odin mode, yet when I try to flash the firmware it failed every time, out fails when it gets to boot in the dialog box. I tried to flash another boot animation, so I'm assuming that's where I went wrong, can someone please tell me what I can do to fix this? I'd be eternally grateful, thank you!

Stock is better and more stable. Custom roms are fine, but a hassle to install and the easiest way to end up with a bricked phone. I have installed a custom ROM before, stock is a better experience.
Sorry, before I answer, my question was to find out your reasons and see if there was anything I could help you overcome. My intention is to help set your mind at ease, but given the reasons you've given, I apologise in advance of my answers seem like I'm just being a git.

a hassle how? Download rom and gapps to sdcard, flash via recovery, wipe data, restore user apps. Don't forget you can't get OTA updates with root, mod packs and custom recovery so that's even more of a hassle imho.

I think that is another sweeping generalisation. I haven't ever seen anyone brick their phone with a custom rom.. Assuming you're using the correct definition whereby phone must be sent to the manufacturer for repair... The most I've seen is someone flashing a kernel or bootloader from the wrong device, or disconnecting mid-flash which can all be fine as stock too.. Though there was that time when cyanogen tried to downgrade the bootloader, though we tend to stay away from them anyway.
Maybe your reasons are born of a lack of confidence and that's understandable. The reasons you have however aren't really reasons though.
I would agree that it's mostly lack of confidence. I mean who would be confident in installing a custom ROM when there's always that warning about bricking and damaging the device. Why risk it? In my experience, it's not installing the ROM that's a hassle, but switching roms or returning to stock. And also having to factory reset the device constantly is very tedious.

The warnings are a general disclaimer so there is no come back on the dev. Ever wonder why some packs of nuts say "may contain nuts"? Its the same sort of thing.
There's no more risk flashing custom roms than flashing stock roms or OTA updates. In fact I think there is less risk. And by flashing mod packs, you're already taking the exact same risk as flashing a custom ROM, so I don't understand the logic.

Mostly people with none or very low understanding of rooting, flashing, adb and such are a high risk for bricking their phone.
The big picture is:
- make sure the fastboot drivers are installed correctly
- Enable adb debugging and enable oem unlock, both in developer options
- Unlock the bootloader in fastboot
- Flash TWRP recovery and make a nandroid backup
- Flash a custom rom and Google apps
- Optional flash a custom kernel
- Flash superSU.zip
- Reboot and thats it

Best way to find out? Try it for yourself. Also, returning to stock on a Nexus is the easiest thing, just a basic understanding of fastboot. There's a guide for that, in the general forum. Look in the sticky roll up thread.
That's the beauty of a Nexus, the simplicity of modification. The amount of development.

I cant comment on that because I haven't tried it or seen it recommended anywhere. That's not to say it's not good, I'm sure it is.
Best way to find a ROM in my opinion, look at the feature set and find one you like, then read a bit of the early pages of a thread them a few at the end to get a feel about what the users think.
Hopefully soon, Xposed will become stable and a whole world will open up to 5.1 users.
