Random Freezes - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my Note 4 after using a nexus 5 and 6, OnePlus, and Note 2. I've noticed my phone randomly freezing for about 4 seconds, then continuing as if nothing happened. Being a nexus user, I'm inclined to believe it being a TouchWiz issue, but my note 2 never had the issue. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Have you been monitoring your CPU temperature? How much RAM is free when these random freezes occur?

I have about 1.6gb free. Temp isn't high either.

There could be an app hoarding your CPU usage. Is there anyway to monitor your CPU Usage?

I rooted and froze some apps since my last message. After disabling several knox related apps and rebooting, the freezes have become much less common and only about a second long. My cpu monitor only records for 2 minutes, so it's tricky trying to catch it now.

Overly aggressive Thermal-Engine & maxcpu=2

I been trying to fix up the thermal-engine.conf file today so it isn't so aggressive, the results were good. Stock settings you can run Antutu bench one time and get pretty good results, probably around 27K, after that it will start to fall. Three runs in and it was hitting 18K, and that translated into some real world slow down, especially in video games.
I completely disabled all of the thermal-engine stuff by renaming thermal-engine.conf to thermal-engine.bak and rebooting. This allowed me to get consistent scores in Antutu. over about 26K each run. The phone did get noticeably warmer around the camera area on the front and back, nothing crazy tho, surprisingly cool compared to other phones.
The other possible limiting factor is maxcpu=2 on the boot image. Changing to to 4 or deleting it all together did nothing. However, from I have gathered setting maxcpu=2 will limit you to two cores.
I see this thread falling to page 2 which makes me sad since I feel it is a very important issue.
I find this extremely interesting and hope there is more work done to circumvent the issue.
Thanks for your testing, OP
So if the phone goes over a certain temperature it will only use 2 cores? I believe I read it tries to stay under 70 C.

Mine broke 30,000 fully stock but you run it a couple of times and watch them scores tumble.
I ran AnTuTu in the freezer and got 29k, I ran AnTuTu normally and I got 23k. for sure it's throttling

Nexus 5. THE phone to own if you live in Antarctica.
You guys realize Nexus 4 was the same way though right? If you are testing in a freezer make sure it's sealed up tight.
This needs attention of devs. Throttle is a big problem.
I know Franco kernel increased temp throttle from 60 to 70. And can be further increased to 80 using trickstermod. But it still throttles.

This phone must be agresivly throttling
.. Because I know a 2.3ghz quad core arm CPU can make a lot of heat... And this nexus 5 runs cool most of the time.

I tested what you say. There is no limit of two cores. You can check this using stability test and system monitor. Most of apps don´t use all the cores because they are not needed, but when you turn on stability test, you can see the four working
There's a post somewhere on this forum that explains why it's limited to 2 cores. If I remember correctly it enables all 4 cores after the boot process completes. Possibly another attempt at keeping the device cool.
I remember seeing the teardown of it and apparently the ram is on top of the cpu...my first thought was that cant be good for keeping it cool. Id imagine it makes things faster between ram and cpu, but id be weary about messing with it being throttled. If its throttling theres probably a good reason
Just south of 30k on Antutu with my phone in a zip lock bag, in a (clean) ice cream container in my eski with ice around it.
While yes the phone does heat up and does throttle, I've seen no impact on any of the games I play (MC4, CS). I'd rather have the phone running at 2 cores when needed and run cool than have a glowing hot ingot on 4 cores all the time.
I've noticed after playing a couple levels of asphalt 8 I see huge frame rate drops. I am usually charging when playing to avoid having a near dead battery after, which I know causes more heat. Throttling must be the issue.

disable MPDecision and you will enable all four core, its in the /system/bin (?) i believe.

I think the max cpu = 2 is present in the note 3 as well. I keep having only 2 cpus active and it won't return to 4 until the phone is rebooted. Is there a way to disable this?

False. It´s even faster.
Same for me.
5.0.1 doubled my speed !
After a new flash it seems really faster
It's no different for me.
It now butters my toast.
My only problem is with battery. 60% in 3 hours without touch the smartphone.
its smooth as butter man here man, i would say even better reception with new radio
It seems like any update has a random chance of causing issues such as slow downs. Try a factory reset.
I feel faster

For me 1% with wifi off.
Feels faster for me too. I noticed it immediately.
5.0.1 seems to bring the micro stutters (music buzzing) that are more often now than on 5.0. I had before a Nexus 4 and the stuttering was really bad. Had flashed the factory image of 5.0.1 and the stuttering is worse than ever. Went back and forth between 5.0 and 5.0.1 just to test behavior, but regarding this issue, 5.0.1 is much worse. Reverted back to 5.0 as it is more stable. And kernel build date, 20 October, really? (as there seemed to be slight changes between 5.0 and 5.0.1)
This discussion is pretty useless TBH. It depends on the user mostly. Someone's got 50 apps installed and uses the phone just for phone calls, someone else may have 250 apps installed and uses the phone for all kind of things. Which means you can't really compare it.

Nexus 6- Display Gets Very Hot After Using Chrome For 10 Minutes

screen heat

Will it damage the screen due to heat. Will custom ROM resolve this issue. I just could not believe that this high end device heats up so much and it is normal!.

the phone can reach up to 100C, 212F, safely. when it reaches 100C, it automatically shuts down to cool off, and it cools of fast. btw, your screen is WAY below 100C(boiling point of water), that mwans its safe.
My phone doesn't heat up at all. I can browse Tapatalk, Google+, Chrome, and Facebook for hours and my phone never goes above 40°C. The only time my phone heats up is while using the camera for extended periods of time or playing Asphalt 8, but even then it stays below 60°C.

Bad battery. Warranty?

Should I and can I send back my device when the battery is looking like this? I have cleaned out and factory reset it two times and updated. This looks terrible. Screen gets really hot too when playing any game.
I'm aware of threads about the battery, but they don't tell me anything since people just post their GOOD battery screenshot and then say to run debloat script or something, but I shouldn't have to.
Sorry, but your Screenshot is not very detailed. You scrolled down - so we can't see which uses most battery.
I think your battery is fine.
Do you have the screen at max. brightness? Reduce it. Turn off Bluetooth, if not needed.
To be honest - my stats are similar.
I assume u are playing your games at max brightness which is why your screen is so hot.
As for your battery, yes your battery looks normal, even more so if you game heavily on it. I get 4-5 hrs of SOT and majority of it is gaming which looks fine to me.

I'm playing them at approx. 40% of screen brightness, so it must be something else. I assume it could be a cocktail of my bluetooth connection and my 3G network connection maybe (since I don't use the 4G network, to save battery ironically). :/
It's not just playing games, just doing a bit of picture editing gets the phone hot too. But I never had that with my old Z3, that's why I find it weird. It should be more optimized to handle such work.
I will wait and see if I can find something more on it.

It still amazes me how you can get 2 days and more of battery life. Yet again, you've only used your device with screen on for 4 hours in 2 days, so that has saved the battery alot.
Thanks for replying.

My screen gets really hot at 50% brightness after playing a game for 15-20 min, specially if it requires network connection. How about yours?
Even when using the camera the screen gets hot, but SUPPORT settings shows the device temperature is normal, but the screen is really hot.
Its differently. If I Play High Graphic Games the Phone is very Hot after 20 min. But Low Games Like Rise Up works normal.
And I can confirm, that we really need the extra amount of ram.
That's my average ram usage.
I don't play games, I don't use many apps and I use Greenify to close everything.
And I removed or disabled preinstalled (system-)apps I don't need.
I would has only 200mb left on the normal device with 4gb.

Nope...
As always. The OS used as much RAM as it can. If there is not enough around stuff will be freed.

And the Prozess "Android-Memory" uses the extra amount of ram for what?
I only use 1-3 apps, and that not often.
Can't complain about mine, disabled a couple unused services but generally untouched. I'm not overly concerned about free ram though, as long as the device runs smoothly it's all good.

You lost 1% battery after charging it 1.5 hours ago?
To calculate the estimated battery time, it uses the last usage statistics.
Btw.
I charge up to 80% (the 80%-100% is killing the battery faster)
WIFI and bluetooth is most of the time deactivated.

Question Stuttering and poor battery life

So my phone is exactly 9 months old today and it is stuttering like crazy especially when I'm using PiP or multitasking basically! I tried almost everything but nothing is helping. I'm also having poor battery life compared to earlier. I used to get 24hrs+ earlier with 5 or 6 hrs screen on time. But now it's just plain bad with 11hrs and 4 to 5hrs of SOT!
Anybody else face this? I'm running,
Beta 3, Exynos device with Watch 4 always connected!
This phone shouldn't lag at all.
Clear the system cache.
What's ram usage at? A memory leak in a app?
Install/uninstall any apps recently?
Any recent firmware updates?
Consider the possibility of being malware caused.
Is the battery still fast charging at the same rates as when new? Is the battery still good?
Li's can fail quickly. Any rear cover bulging ie battery swelling is a failure.
If the cause can't be found and a reload/reflash doesn't help it may be a mobo failure.

Actually now I'm just waiting for the OneUI 4 to launch to reflash. I have cleared the system cache and the ram usage is normal. I feel it maybe because of the GPU as it happens mostly when multitasking with PiP.

I've seen occasional glitches on my N10+/Pie when multitasking but it was 3rd party app related/specific. It didn't bog down the system just screwed up that window.
It easily could software or firmware in your case. Samsung added over 100 apks just to make Q usable, no doubt more with R.
I have 2 N10+'s that are nearly identical except one is running on Pie, the other Q. The Q variant has 50-150* new small apks added to make it functional over the base Android 10 load.
The new Google Android security is a fubar.
It's nuts... lol, Samsung needs to add some more apks I guess
Samsung usually fixes the glitches eventually.
*it's a lot, haven't counted. They're really obvious in Package Disabler though, they're not present in Pie.

There's your reason right there. Beta 4 is meant to be an improvement, but lag and stutters are part and parcel of the A12 betas. It's for this reason I'm sticking with Android 11 (or to be precise Dr. Ketans R10) until the full official Android 12 is released by Samsung.
