just curious.. I got a nexus 5 using straight talk wireless.. so far so good.. but I had a vzw moto x developers edition and I really liked it.. I really wish I hadn't have gotten rid of it.. but I am trying to cut costs on my monthly wireless. Did anyone used to have a nexus 5 and went to a moto x.. will it work on straight talk and also are you satisfied with your choice. I have 8 days to return the nexus 5.. Any input would be great.
I haven't owned an n5....but a friend has one. I like to put it this way.....the n5 is a powerful, fast and a little barbaric Dodge viper. The Moto x is a sleek, sexy and slightly less powerful Ferrari. Pick your poison.

Im sending back the Nexus 5 and going with Moto X
I had an N5 originally. I didn't get the Moto X until the off contract came down a bit over the holidays. Yes the N5 is more powerful on paper but honestly I have not noticed any sluggishness or anything else with my Moto X and I don't regret the swap one bit. Loving the extra "perks" to this phone like Active Notifications and Touchless Display. You'd think they're just gimmicks but they've become very, very useful, and I couldn't imagine having a phone without them now.
I got the Moto x to check out the active display and touchless controls about 2 weeks before the nexus 5 released. I was waiting for the nexus but got bored and impatient. I then went ahead and ordered a nexus within 15 min of them going on sale. I switched to the nexus for about a week and liked the phone but missed the active notifications and the fantastic speaker/sound quality on the moto x. As soon as the moto x got it's kitkat update, I went back and ended up giving the nexus to my wife.
The nexus was a great phone but the active notifications are ridiculously useful, and the speaker quality was the best surprise. The moto x has so far the best speaker that I've found in any phone I've tested. I've even put it up against the HTC one and the x still wins. The sound quality was my biggest complaint with the nexus, it was downright disappointing after already using the moto x.

I have both in the office. I have to say N5 is a Subaru WRX STi...
...and Moto X is Cadillac XLR sedan.
One is a beast with unlimited ways to modify. The other is slightly more expensive, does everything you would expect and more, and does it with style.

If you really want a better camera than this, then you should go for Cannon SLR

Its not a galaxy s5 with 16 mp camera. But take a look at the thread "post photos you clicked with your moto x" and you will see that it takes some really good quality pictures. I like that the camera is fast and you can twist the device to open it. The camera shouldn't be the thing that stops you from getting the x. But I think that you should wait for the nexus 4.4.3 update to see if you still want to keep the device or move over to the x. Active assist, touch less control(which is better than being on the Google experience launcher) and active notifications has been the best features I have used on a phone compared to the galaxy s4 watchon or smart move etc. Those features were gimmicky

I use both phones quite consistently. Here is my scenario. I use the N5 probably about 65% of the time.
Things I like about the N5
The Display
Very accurate. My brother is a photographer and he sends me photos from time to time.. They are very close to what is shown on his calibrated screen. The same pictures on the moto X give jersey shore effect where everyone has a super tan.
Larger size. Even though it's just .3 inches larger it makes a difference, especially with resolution. I don't know if it's some apps but WatchESPN's clarity on the N5 is much easier on the eyes than on the X.
Processor - Everyday activities like browsing, swiping, reading, the difference isn't noticeable, but when switching from app to app frequently and games like scramble, words with friends, PvsZ, the N5 is noticeably superior.
Camera - I take the N5 camera for granted. The OIS makes a huge difference and the quality of the photos is easily better compared to the X. everytime I share a photo with my X my buddy can tell it's from the X vs the N5. It's one of the things that makes me want to throw my X out the window.
Wireless Charging - ever since I invested in several of those 12 dollar nokia wireless chargers, it makes it so convenient. When i carry the X around and I want to put it down to charge, I slap my forehead because it doesn't work with the wireless charging. I've had charging ports go bad before so this is a welcomed feature.
Things i like about my X
Size - it's small, and I can barely tell that it's in my pocket. When i switch phones I constantly have to do a pocket check just to see if it's there. Plus that little dimple is underrated. It's a very nice feel.
Wifi functionality? - For whatever reason the Moto X works fantastically with my QX100 camera attachment via wifi. Where the N5 stutters and lags on the wifi display, the Moto X is nearly lag free and doesn't stutter letting me capture my moments quicker faster and without annoyance. THIS is the primary reason why my moto X is still around. It's become my dedicated point and shoot attachment. It's pretty neat and cool feeling to be able to take shots, upload immediately, and even take calls and check email, texts, chats without having to pull my N5 out of my pocket.
Touchless controls - If I know i'm driving a lot that day, I always try to use the Moto X in the car. "What's up" and "play this song" are super duper features for me while driving and touchless calling is awesome. If touchless controls (google voice commands) could start sending messages via hangouts (non-sms) I'd use it even more. *One issue i have is What's up is somewhat glitchy. Sometimes it takes me to google search instead and sometimes it doesn't read off the notifications, but it hasn't done it that much where I'd ditch it. It's more hit than miss.
Active Display - I'm not as in love with this feature as most are. It's definitely nice. I like how the screen turns on when taking it out of your pocket. It saves me from over using the power button, which I feel has lost some tactile feel on my N5 from over use. I'd like this feature on all my upcoming phones. Active display definitely gives you more info than the notification LED but in meetings it serves the same purpose as I know what type of notification i'm getting. I can't really reach over to read the active display notification while in the meeting and plus the LED light is less subtle so people next to me don't get distracted by my phone. I know I can have it on the N5 with dynamic notifications but I've been reluctant to weigh down the N5 with anymore background tasks due to battery.
Speaker - It's LOUD 'nuff said.
Issues with both phones
Battery life - Don't get me wrong. Both are decent and would probably do the regular user just fine from day to day activities, but I'm on my phone A LOT. My normal routine has just about become, Moto X at work. N5 after work. I've come to the conclusion I need at LEAST 3000mah battery. The X for me slightly edges out the N5.

I have both. And really, to me they are near equal.
My wife has the X now and I have the N5 and when friends hear how affordable both are and ask what they should get out of the 2....I usually immediately say the X. Unless any of them may interested in playing with their device, roms, mods and what not. Then I say N5. Hands down. But.....only ever had one person show interest in tinkering. So I recommend the X 95 percent of the time. LOL

Hey guys. Total XDA noob here.
I got my n6 came from the 2013 motox.
I love the n6 but there's one thing I miss bad enough to consider going back to the x.
Moto assist.
So this is a request/challenge. Can anyone help me get the apk for moto assist up and running on my N6?
And I'm decent for a noob with side loading and what not.

Moto assist is nice but I really miss Moto display...ambient display is terrible. Is there any precedence for porting an oem software to a non supported device?

I actually tried that yesterday, Assist installs just fine but when launched it displays an "Unsupported device" message. Modality won't even install. My Nexus 6 isn't rooted though so I didn't try modifying the build.prop but setting it to a 2014 Moto X might do the trick.
Maybe all it takes is a simple build.prop edit to make the app believe it's a 2014 X?
Can anyone walk me through setting the build.prop to a motox 2014? Or would that cause me to lose other functionality in other apps?
The moto assist app works on a partition of its dual core processor. I don't think it is as simple as changing a build.prop.
What part of assist do you want? If it's the voice texting while driving try the Agent App. It's a pretty good replacement for the driving portion of moto assist.
Anyone try the APKs from the Droid Turbo system dump? Since they're practically identical wrt specs & resolution, I'd expect those files to work with the N6... except Lollipop isn't out yet on that platform...

Yeah then try agent. You'll have to configure it initially because its set to auto reply to texts while driving. It reads your texts to you and asks if you want to reply in basically the same way. It detects your driving when connected to specific Bluetooth devices. It has motion detection but it is in beta but I never tested it since I preferred to activate when connected to Bluetooth.
I've been thinking a lot about this. Truthfully the whole voice command/response with the moto x was a far better experience. What are the chances of a custom ROM that incorporates the moto x features? I don't know what I'm gonna do without those features
Good point. I just bought a 2013 Moto X to see what the world knows about Moto phones that I did not. I got the DE edition for $229, great price.
I'm really liking the hands free aspect of the Moto apps. I was psyched to buy the N6, but it's lack of the Moto apps has me hesitating. I really miss Qi charging & believe it was a misstep to not include it on either Moto. Cool to see the new Druid, but is on Verizon only. Be very cool if these apps or a rom could be developed to incorporate these features. In the meantime, I'm biding time with the Moto X until there's N6 stock or a similar Moto phone to the Droid that will work with AT&T.

Yea I'm missing my x but the n6 is a better device overall. We'll see what happens over the next couple weeks with development. I'd pay to have the x's feature set though.
I'd really like to get Moto Display ported as well... Don't like the play store alternatives.
was anyone successfully able to get moto assist to work with the N6?
Moto X Pro will bring some hope
As motorola is launching Moto X Pro there is a hope that Nexus 6 can get moto Assist, as both share same configuration. :good:

Hello guys, after reading a few threads about the Moto G 2014 touchscreen issue (malfunctioning, lack of responve, etc) as reported here I was wondering if it is a Moto G 2014 only problem or a general issue due to hardware construction and design of moto's.
I had the problem with my Moto G 2014 DTV 16gb Dual edition. I was running with the mobile placed in my shorts with screen facing my skin (so the sweat would probably get into the device, but I completely forget about that possibility, blame on me). After a 35 minutes running the screen got non responsive and went black with the device still running, receiving notifications and calls...
As anyone can see Moto G 2014 was designed with two silver big "dashes" onscreen (one at earphone and one at mic zone) and this design is used in all new moto lining, but Maxx. So Moto X 2014, Moto G 2014 and Moto E, any version of 'em. But Moto G (old), Moto X (old) and Moto Maxx still have a flat screen with no details on it. Are the silver details a problem? Are they a breach for dirty, water and etc?
I have purchased Moto G 2014 only four days ago and in my location I have 7 days to return it for free for a new one or money back. After 7 days I will have to use the warranty system. Instead of return and get another Moto G 2014, which would probably fall onto the same problem , I was wondering if you guys could advise me on if its better to get another model/brand. Thank you all!
The main reasons for purchasing G 2014 relied on dual chip, sdcard and big screen.
Moto G is water resistant, so a little sweat shouldn't be a problem.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzEgzgIaXRI
@ammadeusy
The ''silver dashes'' are the two external stereo speakers
And no, a little sweat wouldn't affect the screen. Ive seen youtube videos of moto g fully submerged in water and being sprayed on with a water hose , yet the phone was responsive as ever.
I think it was a one-time only issue ( I hope) . Never had such problems with my set
Hey Guys,
Just wanted your advice on what phone I should get next. I Love my moto x Dev ed, its the best phone I ever had but its time for an upgrade.
One of the things I loved about it most is the size. Although the new moto x improved on a lot of stuff I don't like how much bigger it is. Its really hard to find a good/better phone in the same size range. Any suggestions? Anyone who upgraded to something else?
I know the main to contenders are galaxy alpha and sony xperia z3c. However, with the samsung I don't want to deal with touchwiz.. (although i suppose I could root and put cm or a custom rom?) . I really like the z3c and it has great reviews BUT the forums have a lot of people complaining about the glass back spontaneously cracking. Also hearing about sony leaving the smartphone market has me worries about future support and updates.
With either of these and others I will also miss the moto x features like active display and moto voice.. Not to mention, I've had a great experience with motorola customer service and warranty replacements/RMA and I'm not confident about getting the same from sony if the glass cracks or something happens.
Which leans me back toward moto.. but I don't want to go bigger. I was also considering the saygus V2. But don't know about their support, updates, and real hands on use reviews..Not to mention its not cheap haha.
So you see my dilemna? I think I might just have to compromise and go with the new moto x and just get used to the size. Thoughts?
I am in the exact same predicament. I bought the 2014 moto x and returned it due to size.
The z3c looks like a good small phone but the glass reminds me of the nexus 4 and it will scratch without a case. Plus Sony may exit the smartphone industry. Updates are going to be slow as well.
The other ones are stripped down versions of there flag ships.
The iPhone 6 is not too much bigger and feels good in the hand but iOS is too limited for my taste.
The nexus 5 is not that much bigger but certainly not as nice feeling as the moto x
Really the smaller phones are going away. So if you are going to increase in size I would go with the 2014 moto x

Thanks! I had a nexus 4 and it was fine but I did keep it in a case. I guess I'd have to do the same for the z3c.. it looks pretty sleek so I would've like to rock it without a case. Still want it even with all the complaints of bad experiences.
And yeah, definitely not switching to iOS. I can consider nexus 5 I suppose. Its sad how limited the smaller options are. I'll probably end up going with 2014 moto x..

motorola should keep't the size of moto x and just upgrade hardware inside. like iphone 4/4s 5/5s.
that is the big problem of android. you see every new phone different design. even it is great design, they upgrade it with ****.
why i love my moto x and dont want upgrade?
- every possible rom is available, i cant use android without root
- good build quality, after 1 year of use, no scratches on screen (never used any screen protection or case)
- battery is enough for me for all possible scenarios.
- 2 port usb charger
- clean system as possible (even though I am a big fan of htc sense)
- never had any problem openin a webpage (yes that is another reason why people buy smartphones )
- speaker and audio codec quality
- useful functions without any gimmick
and size, use it without dropping it. yes this is a good feel
i'm watching new smartphones but none of them exciting me (Z3 Compact, Galaxy Alpha, X 2014)
thanks to moto x i have first time not changed my android phone more than 1 year. (using android since g1) that is biggest reason why i love moto x 2013 :good:
I too am starting to look for a replacement for my XT1060. I love it, but will need something new soon. I was very hopeful for the Nexus 6, but it absolutely too big. The Moto X 2014 looks nice but after getting a Moto Maker 2013 edition and using the Chinese Middleman to unlock the bootloader, and Verizon not offering the Pure edition, it's a no go. Droid Turbo was nice in hand, but it has little hope of rooting or bootloader unlocks (seems to be little demand), and it didn't seem as smooth as the Nexus 6 that my GF has. I held an HTC One M8 the other day and some of the developments for the M9 look nice, but I've never had an HTC device. I would need to be able to root/unlock and get as close to pure Android like the Moto X as possible. It is bigger than the Moto X 2013, but not as big as the Nexus 6.
I have a Nexus 7 2013, so I don't really need a big phone. I've used my GF's N6 a few times and it is just awkward as a phone. Too big for one hand and almost too small for two. Part of it is probably me forcing myself to dislike it so I don't cave and just go buy one.

Here's a page that shows the size difference between the phones you mentioned. The 2013 X is much smaller than everything else you mentioned, the 2014 is biggest.
I'm getting a free upgrade/replacement to moto x 2014 under warranty from motorola. I'm deciding if I should just keep it since they're giving me it, or sell it and get something else. Maybe I'll just buy a 2013 dev ed again. I really had no complaints about it.. It wasn't slow or laggy or anything really.. or a nexus 5.. hmm.

Thanks, I was actually looking at size comparisons earlier. The z3c is actually the same or even barely smaller than 2013 x actually. and alpha is close as well. I might just take the plunge for the xperia z3c and be careful with it...
I'd buy a Galaxy Alpha if verizon had it. Actually verizon has no new phones that are as small as the 1st Gen moto X, since they also didn't get the Xperia Z3 compact.
Samsung is not my favorite, but I'm really hoping someone this year addresses this with a smaller phone with excellent build quality and some updated specs - preferably either Motorola or HTC. Although, I guess I can survive with my 1st Gen moto X for another year. Once Lollipop rolls out for moto x 1st gen maybe I won't care as much =)
I keep hoping that Moto will add something that's between 4.7" and 5" to the lineup that still has Active Display and Moto Voice. Doesn't have to have Moto Maker, doesn't have to have top of the line specs (slightly better than the Moto X 2013 would be good). An HD screen would be nice. Obviously AMOLED is a requirement to do the active display. Heck, I'd even take no LTE. Price point between the Moto X and the Moto G would be fine.
I doubt this would happen as the phone would compete directly with the Moto G 2014, but I can hope.
Since none of the current small handset options seem worthwhile, I'm thinking I may just stick with the moto x 2013 for now and wait to see what comes out in the next few months. Hopefully we'll have a good alternative soon. In the mean time this should hold out. And I agree, won't feel the need as much once we get lollipop.
Thanks!

I'm sticking with my Moto X, although the Nexus 6 gets more and more tempting. I find myself missing my Note 2 for its screen size, but not much else.

I love this phone but I too am itching to move on. I have told myself I'm only buying a phone that launches with lollipop ? so far I haven't seen anything.

Yeah a bit of a step back but the 2014 X was way too big, the z3c was nice but screen sensitivity was too high, it would register these Phantom tap or slides. Drove me nuts. The charging part also sucked with the little cover. I had the magnetic charger but darn thing never stayed on properly if I touched phone at all. 4.7 screens are sweet spot. I do hope someone comes out with a suitable replacement but in meantime the 2013 X is best out there for me.
Personally I hate the route phone manufacturers are taking with 5+ inch screens. Soon the word mobile will lose it's defined meaning. It's OK if you have a carry bag but if you use your pocket it becomes uncomfortable nor practical or "bonner" like lol.
Moto X 2013 has a 4.7 screen and the smallest body of any other phone with same screen size. A winning combination! Whoever takes the same approach next will get my cash until then Moto X will be the only phone I will use. Anything above 5.2 is just dumb and calling it a mobile is an insult imo.
My thoughts exactly. I can't stand the direction phone manufacturers are moving in. I'm holding on tightly to this phone until another small phone comes out with good specs.
I believe it was due this month some time.
I was wondering the same thing? I'm hoping this will help us get some of the moto x features (since they are better implementations) on the nexus 6.
Yeah, I've been wondering about the release too.
If this caused some of the Moto X goodies to come our way...
Seriously, I'd be excited as all hell.
I love my Nexus 6, but there are so many things about it/Lollipop that I think this could fix.
Priority Notifications instead of vibrate is annoying
No called twice option to push through a call
Active display isn't near as good as my wife's Gen 1 moto x
Well, it has now gotten an unboxing. It can't be long now.
