[How-To] Root G900A_OA1 - 4.4.4 (2/3/2015) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

**Make certain that your reactivation lock in security settings is off before beginning this process**
1. Take the OA1 OTA update.
2. Download and install Towelroot-v3.apk(this version does not require internet access).
3. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the Home, Volume Down, and Power keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press Volume Up key) and flash the G900A_ND3_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
4. Open the Towelroot app from your app drawer and press "Make it Rain" to root your device.
5. Power off then boot into "Download Mode" again and flash the G900A_OA1_Stock_Kernel also using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
6. Install SuperSU to manage root access. Done!
Changelog: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB424848&cv=820&_requestid=1642069
Troubleshooting:
1. Should the OA1 ota update fail consider returning to factory stock NCE (all User Data will be lost) by flashing the G900A_Downgrade_to_NCE.tar using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+) then taking the OTA updates to OA1. Or, place the G900A_NCE_to_NG3_OTA.zip and G900A_NG3_tA1_OTA.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload from stock recovery starting with the G900A_NCE_to_NG3_OTA.zip. Once updated to OA1 continue from Step 2 above.
2. When flashing the kernel the most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure!
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.
2. After flashing the ND3 kernel your phone will run a little wonky and towelroot may not root on the first try. If that happens reboot and try towelroot once again. Once rooted and after flashing the OA1 kernel your phone will once again run like a champ!
Alternative Safestrap Method:
1. Place the G900A_OA1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM onto your ext-sdcard.
2. From Safestrap recovery press "Backup" and backup your User Data.
3. From the main menu press "Wipe" then perform an "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
4. Next, press "Install," then select and install the G900A_OA1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.
5. Once complete, press "Restore" and restore your User Data.
6. Last, from the main menu press "Reboot," then "System." Done!
After following the above process your phone will pause on the AT&T splash screen for about 2 minutes before rebooting.
Optional - Enable Native Tethering AddOn:
1. Place the G900A_OA1_TetherAddOn.zip onto your external sd-card.
2. From Safestrap recovery flash the file using "Stock" Slot but do not wipe!
3. Reboot. Done!
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.
2. This process will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, Stock Recovery, and Bootloader to OA1 (BusyBox is also pre-installed).
3. The User Data "Backup" and "Restore" steps in the instructions are not mandatory but will greatly reduce your device's set-up time. All currently installed non-system apps and settings will be automatically restored.

benwaffle - for his flashboot script allowing flashing of the OA1 kernel(built into the ROM) in Safestrap.

Does the NG3 OTA update zip break root?

Currently my phone is on NG3, Rooted with wannam xposed installed. Also I have frozen multiple apps. Is there a way to remove Root and cleanup so the new OTA installs without errors?

@muniz_ri thank you sir you're certainly a credit to this community

Just a warning to others, this OTA caused my wife's S5 to have the data partition erased. That really ticked her off, she still pissed cause it lose a lot of her data. I thought it was like an ordinary OTA and didn't erase data. I dropped it on the SD card, didn't backup any of her internal storage data, and booted into recovery and applied the update via external storage. It ran for about 15mins and one of the last lines on the screen said "Formatting /data....." Not sure why it did that. Didn't see it anywhere in the update-script inside.
I should've learned my lesson from another S3 experience like that a year or so ago, caused the phone to somehow lose all data, should backed up everything ahead of time.

Damn. I had no clue. Now I know. That explains why a few times on adb sideload is never did it. Thanks for the clarification.

Should I wait until android lollipop to come out to root or should I just go ahead and root now?

So like... I got status code 7... And obviously the first thing everyone will say is search xD So I did, and I found the reason being is because, self-explanitory like the log says, it has to do with secEmail_K.apk... Well I uninstalled it with tibu.. Thing is, I had a backup of it, but what I hadn't realized is that was a backup from NCE instead of NG3... I didn't think it would make a difference as I thought "Well the app is the app right?" Well nope... And from what I can understand, it would be illegal for someone to just hand that over to me. Is there any way without factory reset to get this? Thank you in advance.

The only way now is use the method to go back to NCE that Muniz has provided then take the NG3 and then OA1 update OTA. You will lose all internal data so back it up.

Muniz... I had used your instructions in another thread to go from a rooted ND3 to NG3 (after having to do the NCE downgrade) and all is well.
Because I use some apps that require an unrooted device, I used SuperSU's feature to unroot. All well up to this point.
Now the OA1 OTA update fails. I tried it as well with and adb sideload, and get an error indicating that /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml has incorrect data. I had modified it to allow RW access to the External SD card.
Question: without having to go trough the ordeal of downgrading to NCE, could I just Odin ND3 Kernell, root, update the platform.xml file, Odin back to NG3 Kernel, unroot and get the OA1 OTA, and then possibly Odin back to ND3 Kernel to root again, modify the platform.xml for Ext-SD permissions, Odin to OA1 Kernel, unroot, or some sort of combination of abover? I' just am too lazy to go to NC3 which wipes all out and then having to redo all my settings/apps....... Thanks

From the Verizon forums for their Lollipop version. Safestrap upgrade for a rooted Lollipop rom. Muniz is a wizard and so far with every release it appears what happens with Verizon Roms is what can be done with ATT Roms. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=58608519

Are we sure this method works for AT&T S5 rooted and using safestrap??

If I have already gotten to 4.4.4 through OTA updates can I simply run towelroot against the currently installed OTA OA1 Rom?

OTA Update not Working

I can't seem to get the OTA update to work. I am currently on NCE 4.2.2. I have been having lots of signal problems and finally decided to update, but it will not update. I have tried a normal factory reset, SD card update (stock recovery), flashed stock TAR files via Odin, and have tried the regular OTA countless times. This is ridiculous: it should update. There is no reason for it to fail: it is completely stock. Root has been wiped out (confirmed with a root checker). I miss my N5 .
Any other ideas? Sorry if I posted in the wrong section. Move me around as needed. Thanks!

To get it to complete stock all I need is the one .zip file (G900A_NCEtoNG3_OTA.zip) correct? I tried to flash it in the stock recovery and it spat out some error when it checked the system, tried again and then formatted the data partition. I also tried flashing the SM-G900A 4.4.2 G900AUCU1ANCE Firmware (AP/CP/CSC files) in Odin which was successful but the OTA keeps failing. I am sure I am missing something obvious but I don't see it.

[EXPERIMENTAL] Flashing on G900A_OC4 - 5.0 Lollipop

FlashFire - Play BETA - PREVIEW
1. Join the G+ community using the same Google account as you're using for Play on your phone/tablet Here.
2. Sign up to receive the BETA versions from Play Here.
- Use the link provided after sign-up to download the app
With the amazing work by @Chainfire we are blessed with a what seems to be almost perfect replacement for SafeStrap. Yes, this is still in Beta and you should go into this expecting to soft brick your phone every time when flashing something with this. That's why we need some brave souls to test the limits of FlashFire for our poor device.
If you would like to help contribute to see what we can flash with this application here are a couple tutorials on flashing by @muniz_ri
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...w-to-update-to-g900aoca-5-0-keeproot-t3076803
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...-to-enable-native-tethering-g900aoc4-t3078561
If you come across anything that you can flash from the smallest things or even ROMs that you have found compatible please share the knowledge here and I will try to put it in an index that others can see through this beta testing and early phase of Android Lollipop for the G900A.
ROMs that have been confirmed to be flashed and working:
G900A_OC4 5.0 Stock Rooted Android Lollipop by @muniz_ri
Miscellaneous things that have been confirmed to be flashed and working:
Native Tethering by @muniz_ri
300 Fonts for Lollipop and KitKat by @nitol
Titanium Backup's update.zip file
Remote Play Installer
Notes:
If your device stays at the black screen when you try to flash something simply pull the battery out. Then, boot into recovery and wipe the cache partitions. That should allow you to boot your device again after failure.
If you find yourself in a boot loop and downgrading back to NCE you can restore your 5.0 backup while on 4.4.2 (if you made one like you should have) by following my tutorial in the following link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60095108&postcount=21
Here is what I know so far about FlashFire's capabilities on locked bootloader devices:
- Will run on Android v4.x.x/5.0.x.
- Will not trip your Knox Warranty Flag.
- Will flash ROM's (use "flash .zip or ota" option).
- No AROMA installer ROM's.
- Caution! FF flashes to the boot partition, i.e. flashing custom kernels will result in soft brick!
- You can drop a Full Odin .tar or .zip file containing the raw images onto your device and it will flash system, kernel, cache, and recovery (will not flash modem, non-hlos, or bootloader) (use "flash firmware package" option).
- You can flash the remaining partitions via a .zip at the same time or via your PC using Odin.
- Flashes .tars with unsigned images, e.g. system.img.ext4, modem.bin. (use "flash firmware package" option).
- You can also flash individual (un-.tar'd) images, e.g. recovery.img, boot.img.
- Flashes .zip files, e.g. mod's, SuperSu Update.zips, etc (use "flash .zip or ota" option).
- Makes Backups of and Restores all partitions.
- Wipes partitions.
- Injects Root.
I will add here as I test and learn more.
Also want to add a note of caution....if you are a noob and don't have much experience with these things don't rush in. Best to sit back until safe and responsible guides are created. I for one am not at all sympathetic to those that don't take the time to read and understand before jumping in.

One of my questions about FlashFire is will it work on encrypted phones? My work phone is Verizon GS5 and SafeStrap would not work because of my encryption, so I'd be very interested in updating that phone without losing root if it will work. Thanks for all your work!
I attempted to flash Alliance ROM 7.1 from the International Forums.
My Steps:
1. Downgrade to NCE
2. Root
3. SuperSU
4. Install FlashFire
5. Set up FlashFire in the following order;
- Wipe
- Flash Partitions and Bootloader
- Flash Alliance ROM
Everything looked to be working perfectly, but it was getting stuck on the second boot screen. Going to try it again, but after I finish installing Stock Rooted 5.0 again. Maybe it will work then. Only one way to figure out.
Great thread. I'll have a deodexed build up in the next few days then start adding mods and working on other things

Tried to flash Allience in zip/ota and after it wipes it says that it is installing the .zip file for a second then it stops and reboots. Could this be a bug from FlashFire or the ROM not compatible?
Maybe try a dirty flash of the ROM?
I grab a stock ROM directly from G900F, make G900A boot.img and system.img.ext4 into tar.md5. Flash as package in FireFlash along with G900A_OC4_Stock_Partitions_wOA1_BL.zip. Works out pretty well. Just need to disable KNOX with Titanium Backup (for some reason SuperSU doesn't detect KNOX being present) and use Root Explorer to get csc through.
However haven't figured out how to enable VoLTE yet.

That is some very useful information. Can't wait to give it a go tomorrow! Time for some rest.
Do you have SQLite Editor? Maybe VoLTE can be implemented though it.

A general principle to keep in mind is when flashing ROM's at the very least the kernel needs to match the system, i.e. 5.0 system requires the G900A Stock 5.0 kernel, 4.x system requires the G900A Stock 4.x kernel. The matching G900A Stock non-hlos will likely also be required in order for the ROM to work correctly.
I finally managed to get the font package by @nitol to work. The first time I ended up with a bootloop, but then I tried wiping dalvik and cache and flashing. Worked like a charm! Updated it in the OP for the index.

[GUIDE][HOW-TO] Root Galaxy S4 Active (I9295) with Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

The original version of the guide as well as all relevant files can be found here: deathonater.wordpress.com/2015/05/22/rooting-the-samsung-galaxy-s4-active-gt-i9295-with-android-5-0-1-lollipop/
I created this after fruitlessly scouring the xda forums for a comprehensive and easy-to-understand guide to rooting the I9295 with Lollipop. I am a fairly new user with few posts, so I am not yet allowed to post links. I hope my experience can be of use to anyone trying to root their S4 Active with Lollipop. Please let me know if there are any errors.
If you would like to root a Galaxy S4 Active with Android 5.0.1, or you have upgraded a previously rooted Galaxy S4 Active to Android 5.0.1, and discovered that the upgrade process unroots the device, follow the steps below to (re)acquire root access:
POINTS TO NOTE BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS PROCESS:
Read this guide from beginning to end and understand the process before doing anything.
This guide is intended ONLY for the I9295 version of the Galaxy S4 Active, I have not tested it with the AT&T version, or any other phones.
This will flag your operating system as modified, meaning you will not be able to update the OS from the Software updates menu item in Settings.
Please be aware of the risks involved with flashing and rooting phones. I am not responsible for any damage done any device modified using this guide.
Files you will need (available at the URL above):
Odin
CWM
SuperSU
Step 1: Extract Odin, and CWM.
Step 2: Do NOT extract the SuperSU file, just copy it to the phone (NOT the phone’s SD card) and make a note of where it is located.
I suggest downloading the file using the phone’s browser, so that it will be saved to the downloads folder.
Step 3: Power off the phone (do NOT reboot, shut down the phone completely).
The phone should NOT be plugged in to a PC.
Step 4: Boot into download mode by holding down the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time, then press the Volume Up button only when prompted.
Step 5: Start Odin.
Be sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are both checked.
Step 6: Click on the AP button and select the CWM file ending with the .md5 extension.
Step 7: Connect the phone to the PC.
Step 8: Hold the phone in your hand and be prepared to hold down the Volume Up and Power buttons the moment the phone reboots. Do NOT allow the phone to boot fully after flashing CWM, you must boot into recovery right after the flashing process is complete, or else you will have to start over.
Step 9: Click on the Start button in Odin to begin flashing CWM.
Step 10: As soon as the flashing process is completed, the phone will reboot, quickly hold down the Volume Up and Power buttons, and the phone should boot into CWM Recovery.
CWM recovery will have a gray background and the ClockWorkMod graphic will be visible. If you see a black background with orange text, or anything other than what is described, that is not CWM, you will need to start over.
Step 11: Using the hardware buttons, select the option to install zip from phone.
Step 12: Navigate to where you saved the SuperSU file and install it, the phone should reboot.
Congratulations, the Galaxy S4 Active should now be rooted!
thank you
thank you very much! worked very well to me.
Tried this one and rooting was successful.
Root Checker is also say's Root was Verified.
I install XModGames and activate the MOD in COC also it say's XModGames has been Granted by Superuser

I have the i537 and am looking to root however I have already updated to 5.0.1 therefore since I have already updated and didn't previously have root access would the method above work or is there another known root guide for i537 running 5.0.1? The other guide you referenced requires previous root access and that you haven't already updated.
Thanks in advance.

On the i537 we have a locked bootloader, which means we can't install custom kernels or custom recoveries, so no TWRP, no CWM, and no Cyanogenmod. You have to use Odin to downgrade to NE3 KitKat, root that, and use the method I linked to in order to have rooted lollipop. Right now there is no other way, and nobody is working on a different method either
it says recovery faiil
Kingo root also worked for me
Root without PC
Is there a way to root without having to connect to a PC - my phones usb port isn't working?

Rooting my Note 3

First off I would like to say that I am brand new to this forum and to modifying android devices so please bare with me as I am a beginner. So my initial question is what is the best way to root my ATT Samsung Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900A running Lollipop 5.0? I've tried some one click root methods but none ever seemed to work for my phone model which brings me to the whole Odin program. I've been hesitant to use Odin for rooting my device because I don't want it to wipe my data which brings me to my next question, what is the best way to backup my android device and restore it when it is rooted? Again I would like to say I am a beginner so please bare with me, any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you're running stock lollipop, there is currently no method to root the phone without rolling it back to KitKat (NC2) and then rooting and upgrading to a pre-rooted lollipop stock. You need to use odin, there's no escape.
1. Backup your data/apps from the internal storage since you'll lose everything from your internal storage (use MyBackup pro or a similar app), although it won't be able to take the backup of apps' data since you don't have root access at the moment, but at least it will backup apks, messages, call log and other stuff. Make sure you set the backup path to extSD card if you run MyBackup Pro.
2. Download odin from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451
3. Download the stock odin flashable NC2 files from here:https://mega.nz/#F!wg5wRQrQ!vR7a6pze9dgSWjbaRSyhWA
4. Put your phone in the download mode; it can be done through pressing the volume down and home button simultaneously while powering up the phone.
You'll notice that the 2 starting characters of the files (BL,AP,CP and CSC) are the same as the options found in Odin. Load the files in Odin as they match with their downloaded counterparts (ie. BL in BL, CP in CP, CSC in CSC and AP in AP) and flash it.
5. Initialize the device afresh and let it boot.
6. Once the phone boots up and you've completed the crappy startup questions, install towelroot (https://towelroot.com) and root your phone. Install supersu and busybox from playstore and install them. Download and install safestrap (http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=7216)
7. Download the pre-rooted OC2 stock rom from here: https://mega.nz/#!qc8QHI6T!_8x88BL-ivTM0yj5uhbmNITernym8HMr2VKJJZB9JeE
8. Download SuperSu zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3478515&d=1442612185
9. Download the OC1 Patch firmware from here: https://mega.nz/#!fQ8nSbbA!qzw9IzKf6BzwY0IOHGjGFOmV1QgWoYv-AV4NsjyuiT8
10. Download the OC2 Patch firmware from here: https://mega.nz/#!iF8xBS6Z!XQNgLscWM5SOOddlkunQYBCQp2QO03raEMN91sF1g34
11. Download Xposed framework (optional) from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3454433&d=1440761913
12. Download OC1/OC2 fixes/patches from here (download only the ones you think you'll need): http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/development/8-24-15-t3185574
13. Put all these zips in a single folder either in your internal storage or on your extSD card.
14. Run safestrap and reboot to recovery.
15. In the recovery, go to advanced wipe and factory reset your device.
16. Flash the zips that you've downloaded in steps 7-12 in the following order:-
Flash main ROM
Flash SuperSU
Flash Xposed (optional)
Flash OC1 patch firmware
Flash OC2 patch firmware
Flash OC2 Addons/Fixes
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot
17. It'll take a while to boot since the ROM is de-odexed, give it 15 mins or so, and when it boots, you'll have a rooted OC2 lollipop firmware. Enjoy!

Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to reply and put this tutorial together for me. Secondly, since I am not experienced with any of this I do have some follow-up questions. My first question is what is Xposed framework exactly and do you recommend it? On step 12 you linked a thread with a plethora of downloads available so could be more specific of which files I particularly need to download in my case? In step 16 how do I flash all of the listed files? By this I mean will I be in something like Recovery or Boot Mode that allows me the option to flash them or what? Also, will there be an option to "Wipe Dalvik Cache" because I am unaware of what that is and how to do that? Sorry for my abundance of questions but again I am new to all of this. Thank you again for all of the help you have allotted thus far.

Stock Note 3 randomly bootloops, help

My note 3 was rooted on oc1 for a few months, then about a month ago it started randomly rebooting during the day. Sometimes it would boot normally, other times it would bootloop until i cleared the cache multiple times. I then went into safestrap to clear the cache and dalvik, and that ended the random restarts for about a week until it started happening again. To make sure it wasnt the sd card, i swapped sd cards and even removed it entirely, still was getting random bootloops. I got rid of the root and reverted to 100% stock oc1 using the 4 odin tars, then i upgraded to oc2 stock. Still, i am getting bootloops even on a stock rom. What are my options?
Were you getting bootloops on OC1?

Yes, my oc1 was rooted and i was getting bootloops. Now that i reverted to stock oc1, and upgraded to oc2 using OTA, i am still getting random restarts and bootloops.
Could you post an "about device" screen shot that includes version, baseband, kernal, build, and security

Awesome. Could you also link me to the files your putting inside odin? Have you checked the files md5 to make sure they're correct?
To get to 5.0 OC1 originally, did you downgrade to 4.2 NC2 then root with towelroot, install supersu, busybox, safestrap, then flash rooted OC1?

i used the individual wipe tars from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/general/100-stock-lollipop-5-0-n900aucueoc1-t3069609
When i rooted i did downgrade to nc2, did towelroot, supersu, busybox, and safestrap then flashed to oc1 rooted.
Give this a try:
* Make sure to check the MD5s to ensure they downloaded intact. I use http://www.winmd5.com/
1. Downgrade to 4.4.2, using the Full Odin Tar., then root with towelroot, install busybox, safestrap, supersu.
2. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001615211 (N900AUCUCNC2_Full_Odin_Tar)
* Make sure you place this in the odin PDA or AP slot. (depending on which version you have)
3. Now, once your on 4.4.2 rooted, flash this https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934549604 (SM-N900A_OC1_Lollipop_Rooted_Rom.zip) by booting into Safestrap, factory resetting, and then finally flashing.
4. The AT&T logo will sit there for what feels like forever. This is normal.
5. Let me know if this works.
