[How-To] Enable Native Tethering - G900A-NG3 (Safestrap Method)

The following file will enable tethering on your G900A-NG3 Stock ROM Only. I realize there already is a method to enable native tethering using Xposed. However I don't have any experience with Xposed and put this together for my own use. Thought that I would share. Enjoy!
Caution! Use on custom ROM's may cause issues with the ROM. As always proceed at your own risk!
Here it is:
G900A_NG3_TetherAddOn.zip
(To undo the mod flash the G900A_NG3_TetherAddOn_Revert_to_Stock.zip using the same instructions below).
Instructions:
1. Place the G900A_NG3_TetherAddOn.zip onto your ext-sdcard.
2. Reboot into Safestrap Recovery.
3. Flash the G900A_NG3_TetherAddOn.zip in Stock Slot (Do Not Wipe Prior to Flashing!)
4. Reboot. Done!
Note:
1. This will modify your system causing future ota updates to fail!

So, like an idiot, I used Flashfire to flash this to my phone, even though im on OC3. Phone soft bricked. Any workaround? Can I load the Revert To Stock zip onto the SD card and use Flashfire to flash that? Or alternatively, if I can use Odin, which slot in Odin would I use to flash that zip?

To fix soft brick, download this file https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95747613655042108 (G900A_Downgrade_to_NCE.tar.md5), hit the AP button in ODIN 3.09 and click start. You can't flash zip files in ODIN...

[How-To] Root G900A_OA1 - 4.4.4 (2/3/2015)

**Make certain that your reactivation lock in security settings is off before beginning this process**
1. Take the OA1 OTA update.
2. Download and install Towelroot-v3.apk(this version does not require internet access).
3. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the Home, Volume Down, and Power keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press Volume Up key) and flash the G900A_ND3_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
4. Open the Towelroot app from your app drawer and press "Make it Rain" to root your device.
5. Power off then boot into "Download Mode" again and flash the G900A_OA1_Stock_Kernel also using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
6. Install SuperSU to manage root access. Done!

Troubleshooting:
1. Should the OA1 ota update fail consider returning to factory stock NCE (all User Data will be lost) by flashing the G900A_Downgrade_to_NCE.tar using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+) then taking the OTA updates to OA1. Or, place the G900A_NCE_to_NG3_OTA.zip and G900A_NG3_tA1_OTA.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload from stock recovery starting with the G900A_NCE_to_NG3_OTA.zip. Once updated to OA1 continue from Step 2 above.
2. When flashing the kernel the most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure!
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.
2. After flashing the ND3 kernel your phone will run a little wonky and towelroot may not root on the first try. If that happens reboot and try towelroot once again. Once rooted and after flashing the OA1 kernel your phone will once again run like a champ!
Alternative Safestrap Method:
1. Place the G900A_OA1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM onto your ext-sdcard.
2. From Safestrap recovery press "Backup" and backup your User Data.
3. From the main menu press "Wipe" then perform an "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
4. Next, press "Install," then select and install the G900A_OA1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.
5. Once complete, press "Restore" and restore your User Data.
6. Last, from the main menu press "Reboot," then "System." Done!
After following the above process your phone will pause on the AT&T splash screen for about 2 minutes before rebooting.
Optional - Enable Native Tethering AddOn:
1. Place the G900A_OA1_TetherAddOn.zip onto your external sd-card.
2. From Safestrap recovery flash the file using "Stock" Slot but do not wipe!
3. Reboot. Done!
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.
2. This process will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, Stock Recovery, and Bootloader to OA1 (BusyBox is also pre-installed).
3. The User Data "Backup" and "Restore" steps in the instructions are not mandatory but will greatly reduce your device's set-up time. All currently installed non-system apps and settings will be automatically restored.

Does the NG3 OTA update zip break root?

Currently my phone is on NG3, Rooted with wannam xposed installed. Also I have frozen multiple apps. Is there a way to remove Root and cleanup so the new OTA installs without errors?

Just a warning to others, this OTA caused my wife's S5 to have the data partition erased. That really ticked her off, she still pissed cause it lose a lot of her data. I thought it was like an ordinary OTA and didn't erase data. I dropped it on the SD card, didn't backup any of her internal storage data, and booted into recovery and applied the update via external storage. It ran for about 15mins and one of the last lines on the screen said "Formatting /data....." Not sure why it did that. Didn't see it anywhere in the update-script inside.
I should've learned my lesson from another S3 experience like that a year or so ago, caused the phone to somehow lose all data, should backed up everything ahead of time.

This happen if you load from SD-CARDS. If you push true ADB sideload will not erase data.

Should I wait until android lollipop to come out to root or should I just go ahead and root now?

So like... I got status code 7... And obviously the first thing everyone will say is search xD So I did, and I found the reason being is because, self-explanitory like the log says, it has to do with secEmail_K.apk... Well I uninstalled it with tibu.. Thing is, I had a backup of it, but what I hadn't realized is that was a backup from NCE instead of NG3... I didn't think it would make a difference as I thought "Well the app is the app right?" Well nope... And from what I can understand, it would be illegal for someone to just hand that over to me. Is there any way without factory reset to get this? Thank you in advance.

We may not even see a rooted lollipop (stock kernel and bootloader) so enjoy root on kitkat

The only way now is use the method to go back to NCE that Muniz has provided then take the NG3 and then OA1 update OTA. You will lose all internal data so back it up.

Muniz... I had used your instructions in another thread to go from a rooted ND3 to NG3 (after having to do the NCE downgrade) and all is well.
Because I use some apps that require an unrooted device, I used SuperSU's feature to unroot. All well up to this point.
Now the OA1 OTA update fails. I tried it as well with and adb sideload, and get an error indicating that /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml has incorrect data. I had modified it to allow RW access to the External SD card.
Question: without having to go trough the ordeal of downgrading to NCE, could I just Odin ND3 Kernell, root, update the platform.xml file, Odin back to NG3 Kernel, unroot and get the OA1 OTA, and then possibly Odin back to ND3 Kernel to root again, modify the platform.xml for Ext-SD permissions, Odin to OA1 Kernel, unroot, or some sort of combination of abover? I' just am too lazy to go to NC3 which wipes all out and then having to redo all my settings/apps....... Thanks

From the Verizon forums for their Lollipop version. Safestrap upgrade for a rooted Lollipop rom. Muniz is a wizard and so far with every release it appears what happens with Verizon Roms is what can be done with ATT Roms. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=58608519

If I have already gotten to 4.4.4 through OTA updates can I simply run towelroot against the currently installed OTA OA1 Rom?

Notes:
If your device stays at the black screen when you try to flash something simply pull the battery out. Then, boot into recovery and wipe the cache partitions. That should allow you to boot your device again after failure.
If you find yourself in a boot loop and downgrading back to NCE you can restore your 5.0 backup while on 4.4.2 (if you made one like you should have) by following my tutorial in the following link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60095108&postcount=21

Here is what I know so far about FlashFire's capabilities on locked bootloader devices:
- Will run on Android v4.x.x/5.0.x.
- Will not trip your Knox Warranty Flag.
- Will flash ROM's (use "flash .zip or ota" option).
- No AROMA installer ROM's.
- Caution! FF flashes to the boot partition, i.e. flashing custom kernels will result in soft brick!
- You can drop a Full Odin .tar or .zip file containing the raw images onto your device and it will flash system, kernel, cache, and recovery (will not flash modem, non-hlos, or bootloader) (use "flash firmware package" option).
- You can flash the remaining partitions via a .zip at the same time or via your PC using Odin.
- Flashes .tars with unsigned images, e.g. system.img.ext4, modem.bin. (use "flash firmware package" option).
- You can also flash individual (un-.tar'd) images, e.g. recovery.img, boot.img.
- Flashes .zip files, e.g. mod's, SuperSu Update.zips, etc (use "flash .zip or ota" option).
- Makes Backups of and Restores all partitions.
- Wipes partitions.
- Injects Root.
I will add here as I test and learn more.
Also want to add a note of caution....if you are a noob and don't have much experience with these things don't rush in. Best to sit back until safe and responsible guides are created. I for one am not at all sympathetic to those that don't take the time to read and understand before jumping in.

One of my questions about FlashFire is will it work on encrypted phones? My work phone is Verizon GS5 and SafeStrap would not work because of my encryption, so I'd be very interested in updating that phone without losing root if it will work. Thanks for all your work!

I attempted to flash Alliance ROM 7.1 from the International Forums.
My Steps:
1. Downgrade to NCE
2. Root
3. SuperSU
4. Install FlashFire
5. Set up FlashFire in the following order;
- Wipe
- Flash Partitions and Bootloader
- Flash Alliance ROM
Everything looked to be working perfectly, but it was getting stuck on the second boot screen. Going to try it again, but after I finish installing Stock Rooted 5.0 again. Maybe it will work then. Only one way to figure out.

Great thread. I'll have a deodexed build up in the next few days then start adding mods and working on other things

Going to try as a firmware package
When I tried to flash as a zip in FlashFire all it did was wipe my device then once it tried to insall the ROM it stopped then rebooted.

Tried to flash Allience in zip/ota and after it wipes it says that it is installing the .zip file for a second then it stops and reboots. Could this be a bug from FlashFire or the ROM not compatible?
Maybe try a dirty flash of the ROM?

I grab a stock ROM directly from G900F, make G900A boot.img and system.img.ext4 into tar.md5. Flash as package in FireFlash along with G900A_OC4_Stock_Partitions_wOA1_BL.zip. Works out pretty well. Just need to disable KNOX with Titanium Backup (for some reason SuperSU doesn't detect KNOX being present) and use Root Explorer to get csc through.
However haven't figured out how to enable VoLTE yet.

I tried the dirty flash. Just stuck at black screen. I let it sit for 25 min then did a battery pull. Rom did not install. I'll leave it alone tonight before i have to stay up all night fixing a soft brick. Haha.

Do you have SQLite Editor? Maybe VoLTE can be implemented though it.

@Nyxerosoir It's not that the option that is not there. It is just I am not able to enable it (grayed out) or it says "VoLTE is not supported by your current software version. Contact customer service for more details." if I try to enable it on quick settings.

A general principle to keep in mind is when flashing ROM's at the very least the kernel needs to match the system, i.e. 5.0 system requires the G900A Stock 5.0 kernel, 4.x system requires the G900A Stock 4.x kernel. The matching G900A Stock non-hlos will likely also be required in order for the ROM to work correctly.

I finally managed to get the font package by @nitol to work. The first time I ended up with a bootloop, but then I tried wiping dalvik and cache and flashing. Worked like a charm! Updated it in the OP for the index.

Can i upgrade from custom 4.4.2 to stock 5.0 via flashfire without needing a pc odin to flash bootloader and modem ? (I have G900F so unlocked bootloader)

Yes, follow @muniz_ri's guide and you can successfully upgrade from 4.4.2 to 5.0 without a PC.

N9208 Taiwan MM - Root or Knox batt drain?

Hi guys, i know that we just have MM update for 9208 TW.
If this is previously rooted phone, will there be batt drain after update?
If yes, how to root to fix as non of the forum has info on routing MM 9208.

1. Take backup of ALL DATA
2. Download ODIN flash-able file of MM for Taiwan from sammobile.
3. Add the file in AP section.
4. Selected 3 options. Auto Reboot, F.Reset Time and NAND Erase All.
5. Flashing successful
6. Go into stock recovery and Wipe Cache Parititon and then Wipe Data/Factory Reset and Reboot.
Report here if it works for you. DO NOT RESTORE APPS but re-install.
It worked for me and most of the users. I guess Samsung might've provided a fix to this in this ROM's kernel.

I did not do NAND delete and lazy to reset everything. I have just done MM via ODIN still dont know how the drain yet as i dont have root for betterbattstat to read but have to take time observe.

Nope, I dont have an Indian N9208. I bought it online and got a N9208 Taiwan variant.

It is usually suggested to do a CLEAN installation when doing an ODIN flash (including Internal Storage which is done only through NAND ERASE ALL). Post your battery consumption/drain details once you are done analyzing. :good:

1. Flash TWRP Recovery
2. Back-up using TWRP
3. Download SuperSU 2.71 and install through recovery
4. Tada...you are rooted.

[GUIDE] [VIDEO] - SM-T550 w/ debloated, xposed-free Marshmallow (Indian ROM)

Samsung Galaxy Tab A
Only for: SM-T550
A trick has been found which will give you root on a brand spaking new Marshmallow ROM for your SM-T550 Samsung Galaxy Tab A. This guide assumes the following:
That you know how to use FlashFire to preserve root on an official OTA update.
That you are aware of the functionality of SuperSU.
That you are starting the process from a stock-rooted Lollipop ROM w/ TWRP recovery installed.
That you own a PC with the correct Samsung drivers and ADB+Fastboot, that you've tested ADB, and it's working.
All of that said, let's begin.
Step 1
Make yourself a backup, both a nandroid in TWRP, and grab all of your important documents, music, videos, hardcore XXX, excetra, from your Internal memory and copy them to your PC. I am not responsible for the loss of data while using this guide.
Step 2
Go and download the French / Indian variant of the ROM on Samdroid. When you have inhaled 3 cups of coffee, listened to some vaperwave, banged head here a few times (on something soft, please. no liability for concussions), your download should be done. Samdroid takes a while, especially when you have a free account. You'll get the official tar.gz file.
Step 3
Copy the tar.gz firmware to the Internal Storage of your device.
Step 4
Get FlashFire from the Google Play store on the tablet.
Step 5
Open FlashFire and grant it root access. This next step is the use of FlashFire. Follow these instructions:
Tap the floating red bubble and select "Flash Firmware Package".
Navigate to your file on your Internal Memory (provided you remember where it is. If not, a rage quit is an option, unless you remembered where you put that USB cable. Deernit!) and select it.
Select partitions: boot, system, data, and cache. Don't flash the stock recovery if you don't want it. If you'd like a clean TWRP install, go that route and select Recovery, then after the flash you'll enter the bootloader from ADB and flash TWRP the normal way.
Allow wiping of the cache, and select the option to inject su and SuperSU before the flash.
Double check your to-do list.
Flash!
Step 6
Okay, so if your tablet hasn't hit a brick wall after the reboot, you're good. I would advise flashing the latest version of TWRP to keep recovery stable. If you somehow don't boot, you probably wiped your data and did not install the default GApps provided by the firmware. A flash of nano OpenGApps 6.0.1 arm32 in TWRP will fix this.
Step 7
One of two things will happen here. You will either:
Weep uncontrollably and start again with Samsung Kies, then Samdroid Lollipop, then root, then...ugh...nevermind. Just talking about it makes me want to cry.
- OR -
You'll be on Marshmallow with SuperSU, without xposed, you can reflash TWRP and go mod-happy!

A: Because signature checks and no root injection.
Q: There's already a US OTA?
A: You can do this OTA, but then you get the locked Marshmallow bootloader. After flash and boot there's no way to get root this way on Android 6.0.1.
Q: I'm bootlooping. Haaaalp!
A: Samsung Kies. Go download it, and revert to US stock. Odin-flash Lollipop firmware, root, rinse, repeat.
Q: Does this trip the Knox counter?
A: Yes, unfortunetly.
Q: Does this void my warranty?
A: What warranty? This tablet came out 2 years ago. But, if you got it extended...yes...yes it does
Q: Are you a bad person?

The bootloader isn't locked so you can actually just flash twrp then supersu.
