[How-To] Enable Native Tethering - G900A-NG3 (Safestrap Method) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

The following file will enable tethering on your G900A-NG3 Stock ROM Only. I realize there already is a method to enable native tethering using Xposed. However I don't have any experience with Xposed and put this together for my own use. Thought that I would share. Enjoy!
Caution! Use on custom ROM's may cause issues with the ROM. As always proceed at your own risk!
Here it is:
G900A_NG3_TetherAddOn.zip
(To undo the mod flash the G900A_NG3_TetherAddOn_Revert_to_Stock.zip using the same instructions below).
Instructions:
1. Place the G900A_NG3_TetherAddOn.zip onto your ext-sdcard.
2. Reboot into Safestrap Recovery.
3. Flash the G900A_NG3_TetherAddOn.zip in Stock Slot (Do Not Wipe Prior to Flashing!)
4. Reboot. Done!
Note:
1. This will modify your system causing future ota updates to fail!

Works great Thanks!

G900A_NG3_TetherAddOn.zip can it be done by flash fire method?

So, like an idiot, I used Flashfire to flash this to my phone, even though im on OC3. Phone soft bricked. Any workaround? Can I load the Revert To Stock zip onto the SD card and use Flashfire to flash that? Or alternatively, if I can use Odin, which slot in Odin would I use to flash that zip?

To fix soft brick, download this file https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95747613655042108 (G900A_Downgrade_to_NCE.tar.md5), hit the AP button in ODIN 3.09 and click start. You can't flash zip files in ODIN...

[Q] Usb gone, cant use ODIN, must return it to stock

Hey guys!
I'm currently running the latest CM from nova-fusion but i have a problem with the usb port (its hardware related not software). It shows its still charging if i unplug the charger and i cannot connect it to the pc so i can't use Odin.
I have to restore it to stock everything so i can send it for repairs. I did a nandroid backup of the stock system so i can use that to restore the rom but i don't know how to flash the stock recovery without Odin. I am currently using TWRP 2.7.0.0.
Is "Recovery-Switcher" the alternative i am looking for? Is it capable of flashing my stock recovery back without the use of a cable? Also any thoughts on resetting the counter for custom rom's in download mode?
Thank you in advance!:highfive:

I know a way how to get the stock recovery back and reset the custom binary counter back to 0 without Odin.
So, I think you should first restore your backed up stock ROM. Then follow this :
1. Download your stock ROM from SamMobile and save it to your PC.
2. After successful download extract (unzip) it and RENAME the ...HOME.tar.md5 file to ...HOME.zip. Then you are able to extract system.img, cache.img etc. files.
3. Now extract the "recovery.img" file to your desktop. (It's the stock recovery)
4. After that remove your micro SD card from your S3 mini and put it into a other phone or card reader. (A important point!)
5. Move the recovery.img file to your micro SD card and put it back to your s3 mini. (Important point too!)
6. Now download triangle away from : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/orig-development/2014-01-15-triangleaway-v3-26-t1494114. Install it and open it. Triangle Away can reset and set your phone status back to official. (triangle away needs ROOT access)
7. Reset your custom binary counter (You will get a warning message, this method may risks a soft brick but don't worry, triangle away supports s3 mini but only if you use stock ROM.)
8. Now your custom binary counter should show 0 in download mode.
9. Now download and install "rashr - recovery flasher" from play store. This app can flash recoveries as .img format (this app needs root access too) link to play store : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools
10. Open "Rashr - Recovery Flasher". Choose "flash revovery" > "other from storage" navigate to sdcard1 (mirco SD card) and choose "recovery.img" and flash it, of course!
11. Now you should have your stock recovery back (check it first )
12. If everything is ok then you are ready to unroot etc.
Good luck!!

[Q] Understanding rooting - NovaFusion/CyanogenMod

So I'm new to rooting and was thinking about spicing up my old NON-ROOTED European version of S3 Mini (as in I8190). I did some research and decided to go with CyanogenMod ROM for the best stability and support. The latest build (11.0) can be downloaded from NovaFusion. The developers offer the following instructions (I'm using a Mac):
You need to download these files:
JOdin3 r1035 for OS X/Linux/Windows: download
Latest Heimdall driver for your OS: download (from official page)
Latest version of ROM for Odin from our download page.
Installed Java (on Mac you can simply install it from AppStore, if you’re Linux owner, Google how to install it on your distribution)
And then perform this steps:
Install downloaded Heimdall drivers. After installation probably you will need to restart your computer.
Unzip downloaded package with latest ROM (if it’s zipped). You should get file with *.tar.md5 extension
Run JOdin3 using Java.
In opened window, click on PDA button and select file with *.tar.md5 extension from previous step
Make sure that only Auto Reboot is selected on the left side.
Turn off your phone, and then use VOL- & HOME & POWER buttons combination.
If you see Warning screen, use VOL+ button.
You should see Android and some information.
Connect phone to computer and make sure it is detected by JOdin (it will appear as COM device). If it doesn’t, try to use other USB port.
Use Start button. JOdin will inform you that no PIT file was attached and ask if it should be downloaded itself. Agree for it. Wait until flash process will finish.
Your phone will restart, but probably won’t boot. Pull down your battery and use VOL+ & HOME & POWER buttons combo to boot into recovery.
Click on Wipe, then use slider on the bottom to let process begin.
Click on Home icon, and then Reboot -> System.
Wait for boot. Now you should have ROM installed and ready to use!
They also suggest this:
For flashing KitKat, we recommend you to install our TWRP recovery (available on Download page)!
My problem: I'm having trouble understanding which part is the "rooting" (which from what I've understood must be done before flashing a ROM) and which part is flashing the CyanogenMod ROM. Does this method include rooting? When should I install the TWRP recovery? Is it the first step to do to an non-rooted device? Is every step of getting a non-rooted S3 Mini to a rooted S3 Mini with CyanogenMOD Kitkat included in these instructions?

Rooting is not required when flashing a rooted ROM via Odin or Heimdall.
Note: CyanogenMod is already rooted.
Note2: Odin or Heimdall is not the only installation method and other methods might require you to be rooted first...

Thank you for clearing this up. What about the TWRP recovery? None of the steps in NovaFusion's instructions include using this file. Do I need it or is it something for another type of flashing method (other than Heimdall/Odin)?

Typically the first thing you want to flash a custom recovery like TWRP via Odin or Heimdall. That allows you to flash things via recovery which gives you and additional option. Not all custom ROM's you find will have and (Odin or Heimdall) option. Most are recovery only; Also most MOD's are recovery only... If you are flashing a custom ROM then I would also flash the custom recovery the ROM creator recommends... :good:
EDIT: Also, recovery gives you the option to make a full backup, which you can restore incase you don't like the ROM..

Understood. So basically after installation of Heimdall I will flash TWRP (and probably do a backup via TWRP) and then continue on with
Unzip downloaded package with latest ROM (if it’s zipped). You should get file with *.tar.md5 extension
Run JOdin3 using Java.
In opened window, click on PDA button and select file with *.tar.md5 extension from previous step
Make sure that only Auto Reboot is selected on the left side.

Click on Wipe, then use slider on the bottom to let process begin.
Click on Home icon, and then Reboot -> System.
Wait for boot. Now you should have ROM installed and ready to use!
Thank you so much for helping me with these beginner's questions!

[How-To] Root G900A_OA1 - 4.4.4 (2/3/2015)

**Make certain that your reactivation lock in security settings is off before beginning this process**
1. Take the OA1 OTA update.
2. Download and install Towelroot-v3.apk(this version does not require internet access).
3. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the Home, Volume Down, and Power keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press Volume Up key) and flash the G900A_ND3_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
4. Open the Towelroot app from your app drawer and press "Make it Rain" to root your device.
5. Power off then boot into "Download Mode" again and flash the G900A_OA1_Stock_Kernel also using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
6. Install SuperSU to manage root access. Done!
Changelog: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB424848&cv=820&_requestid=1642069
Troubleshooting:
1. Should the OA1 ota update fail consider returning to factory stock NCE (all User Data will be lost) by flashing the G900A_Downgrade_to_NCE.tar using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+) then taking the OTA updates to OA1. Or, place the G900A_NCE_to_NG3_OTA.zip and G900A_NG3_tA1_OTA.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload from stock recovery starting with the G900A_NCE_to_NG3_OTA.zip. Once updated to OA1 continue from Step 2 above.
2. When flashing the kernel the most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure!
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.
2. After flashing the ND3 kernel your phone will run a little wonky and towelroot may not root on the first try. If that happens reboot and try towelroot once again. Once rooted and after flashing the OA1 kernel your phone will once again run like a champ!
Alternative Safestrap Method:
1. Place the G900A_OA1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM onto your ext-sdcard.
2. From Safestrap recovery press "Backup" and backup your User Data.
3. From the main menu press "Wipe" then perform an "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
4. Next, press "Install," then select and install the G900A_OA1_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.
5. Once complete, press "Restore" and restore your User Data.
6. Last, from the main menu press "Reboot," then "System." Done!
After following the above process your phone will pause on the AT&T splash screen for about 2 minutes before rebooting.
Optional - Enable Native Tethering AddOn:
1. Place the G900A_OA1_TetherAddOn.zip onto your external sd-card.
2. From Safestrap recovery flash the file using "Stock" Slot but do not wipe!
3. Reboot. Done!
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.
2. This process will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, Stock Recovery, and Bootloader to OA1 (BusyBox is also pre-installed).
3. The User Data "Backup" and "Restore" steps in the instructions are not mandatory but will greatly reduce your device's set-up time. All currently installed non-system apps and settings will be automatically restored.

Just a warning to others, this OTA caused my wife's S5 to have the data partition erased. That really ticked her off, she still pissed cause it lose a lot of her data. I thought it was like an ordinary OTA and didn't erase data. I dropped it on the SD card, didn't backup any of her internal storage data, and booted into recovery and applied the update via external storage. It ran for about 15mins and one of the last lines on the screen said "Formatting /data....." Not sure why it did that. Didn't see it anywhere in the update-script inside.
I should've learned my lesson from another S3 experience like that a year or so ago, caused the phone to somehow lose all data, should backed up everything ahead of time.

Should I wait until android lollipop to come out to root or should I just go ahead and root now?
So like... I got status code 7... And obviously the first thing everyone will say is search xD So I did, and I found the reason being is because, self-explanitory like the log says, it has to do with secEmail_K.apk... Well I uninstalled it with tibu.. Thing is, I had a backup of it, but what I hadn't realized is that was a backup from NCE instead of NG3... I didn't think it would make a difference as I thought "Well the app is the app right?" Well nope... And from what I can understand, it would be illegal for someone to just hand that over to me. Is there any way without factory reset to get this? Thank you in advance.

The only way now is use the method to go back to NCE that Muniz has provided then take the NG3 and then OA1 update OTA. You will lose all internal data so back it up.
Muniz... I had used your instructions in another thread to go from a rooted ND3 to NG3 (after having to do the NCE downgrade) and all is well.
Because I use some apps that require an unrooted device, I used SuperSU's feature to unroot. All well up to this point.
Now the OA1 OTA update fails. I tried it as well with and adb sideload, and get an error indicating that /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml has incorrect data. I had modified it to allow RW access to the External SD card.
Question: without having to go trough the ordeal of downgrading to NCE, could I just Odin ND3 Kernell, root, update the platform.xml file, Odin back to NG3 Kernel, unroot and get the OA1 OTA, and then possibly Odin back to ND3 Kernel to root again, modify the platform.xml for Ext-SD permissions, Odin to OA1 Kernel, unroot, or some sort of combination of abover? I' just am too lazy to go to NC3 which wipes all out and then having to redo all my settings/apps....... Thanks

[EXPERIMENTAL] Flashing on G900A_OC4 - 5.0 Lollipop

FlashFire - Play BETA - PREVIEW
1. Join the G+ community using the same Google account as you're using for Play on your phone/tablet Here.
2. Sign up to receive the BETA versions from Play Here.
- Use the link provided after sign-up to download the app
With the amazing work by @Chainfire we are blessed with a what seems to be almost perfect replacement for SafeStrap. Yes, this is still in Beta and you should go into this expecting to soft brick your phone every time when flashing something with this. That's why we need some brave souls to test the limits of FlashFire for our poor device.
If you would like to help contribute to see what we can flash with this application here are a couple tutorials on flashing by @muniz_ri
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...w-to-update-to-g900aoca-5-0-keeproot-t3076803
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att...-to-enable-native-tethering-g900aoc4-t3078561
If you come across anything that you can flash from the smallest things or even ROMs that you have found compatible please share the knowledge here and I will try to put it in an index that others can see through this beta testing and early phase of Android Lollipop for the G900A.
ROMs that have been confirmed to be flashed and working:
G900A_OC4 5.0 Stock Rooted Android Lollipop by @muniz_ri
Miscellaneous things that have been confirmed to be flashed and working:
Native Tethering by @muniz_ri
300 Fonts for Lollipop and KitKat by @nitol
Titanium Backup's update.zip file
Remote Play Installer
Notes:
If your device stays at the black screen when you try to flash something simply pull the battery out. Then, boot into recovery and wipe the cache partitions. That should allow you to boot your device again after failure.
If you find yourself in a boot loop and downgrading back to NCE you can restore your 5.0 backup while on 4.4.2 (if you made one like you should have) by following my tutorial in the following link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60095108&postcount=21
Here is what I know so far about FlashFire's capabilities on locked bootloader devices:
- Will run on Android v4.x.x/5.0.x.
- Will not trip your Knox Warranty Flag.
- Will flash ROM's (use "flash .zip or ota" option).
- No AROMA installer ROM's.
- Caution! FF flashes to the boot partition, i.e. flashing custom kernels will result in soft brick!
- You can drop a Full Odin .tar or .zip file containing the raw images onto your device and it will flash system, kernel, cache, and recovery (will not flash modem, non-hlos, or bootloader) (use "flash firmware package" option).
- You can flash the remaining partitions via a .zip at the same time or via your PC using Odin.
- Flashes .tars with unsigned images, e.g. system.img.ext4, modem.bin. (use "flash firmware package" option).
- You can also flash individual (un-.tar'd) images, e.g. recovery.img, boot.img.
- Flashes .zip files, e.g. mod's, SuperSu Update.zips, etc (use "flash .zip or ota" option).
- Makes Backups of and Restores all partitions.
- Wipes partitions.
- Injects Root.
I will add here as I test and learn more.
Also want to add a note of caution....if you are a noob and don't have much experience with these things don't rush in. Best to sit back until safe and responsible guides are created. I for one am not at all sympathetic to those that don't take the time to read and understand before jumping in.

One of my questions about FlashFire is will it work on encrypted phones? My work phone is Verizon GS5 and SafeStrap would not work because of my encryption, so I'd be very interested in updating that phone without losing root if it will work. Thanks for all your work!
I attempted to flash Alliance ROM 7.1 from the International Forums.
My Steps:
1. Downgrade to NCE
2. Root
3. SuperSU
4. Install FlashFire
5. Set up FlashFire in the following order;
- Wipe
- Flash Partitions and Bootloader
- Flash Alliance ROM
Everything looked to be working perfectly, but it was getting stuck on the second boot screen. Going to try it again, but after I finish installing Stock Rooted 5.0 again. Maybe it will work then. Only one way to figure out.
Great thread. I'll have a deodexed build up in the next few days then start adding mods and working on other things

Tried to flash Allience in zip/ota and after it wipes it says that it is installing the .zip file for a second then it stops and reboots. Could this be a bug from FlashFire or the ROM not compatible?
Maybe try a dirty flash of the ROM?
I grab a stock ROM directly from G900F, make G900A boot.img and system.img.ext4 into tar.md5. Flash as package in FireFlash along with G900A_OC4_Stock_Partitions_wOA1_BL.zip. Works out pretty well. Just need to disable KNOX with Titanium Backup (for some reason SuperSU doesn't detect KNOX being present) and use Root Explorer to get csc through.
However haven't figured out how to enable VoLTE yet.

I tried the dirty flash. Just stuck at black screen. I let it sit for 25 min then did a battery pull. Rom did not install. I'll leave it alone tonight before i have to stay up all night fixing a soft brick. Haha.

That is some very useful information. Can't wait to give it a go tomorrow! Time for some rest.
Do you have SQLite Editor? Maybe VoLTE can be implemented though it.

@Nyxerosoir It's not that the option that is not there. It is just I am not able to enable it (grayed out) or it says "VoLTE is not supported by your current software version. Contact customer service for more details." if I try to enable it on quick settings.

A general principle to keep in mind is when flashing ROM's at the very least the kernel needs to match the system, i.e. 5.0 system requires the G900A Stock 5.0 kernel, 4.x system requires the G900A Stock 4.x kernel. The matching G900A Stock non-hlos will likely also be required in order for the ROM to work correctly.
I finally managed to get the font package by @nitol to work. The first time I ended up with a bootloop, but then I tried wiping dalvik and cache and flashing. Worked like a charm! Updated it in the OP for the index.
Can i upgrade from custom 4.4.2 to stock 5.0 via flashfire without needing a pc odin to flash bootloader and modem ? (I have G900F so unlocked bootloader)

Rooting my Note 3

First off I would like to say that I am brand new to this forum and to modifying android devices so please bare with me as I am a beginner. So my initial question is what is the best way to root my ATT Samsung Galaxy Note 3 SM-N900A running Lollipop 5.0? I've tried some one click root methods but none ever seemed to work for my phone model which brings me to the whole Odin program. I've been hesitant to use Odin for rooting my device because I don't want it to wipe my data which brings me to my next question, what is the best way to backup my android device and restore it when it is rooted? Again I would like to say I am a beginner so please bare with me, any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you're running stock lollipop, there is currently no method to root the phone without rolling it back to KitKat (NC2) and then rooting and upgrading to a pre-rooted lollipop stock. You need to use odin, there's no escape.
1. Backup your data/apps from the internal storage since you'll lose everything from your internal storage (use MyBackup pro or a similar app), although it won't be able to take the backup of apps' data since you don't have root access at the moment, but at least it will backup apks, messages, call log and other stuff. Make sure you set the backup path to extSD card if you run MyBackup Pro.
2. Download odin from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451
3. Download the stock odin flashable NC2 files from here:https://mega.nz/#F!wg5wRQrQ!vR7a6pze9dgSWjbaRSyhWA
4. Put your phone in the download mode; it can be done through pressing the volume down and home button simultaneously while powering up the phone.
You'll notice that the 2 starting characters of the files (BL,AP,CP and CSC) are the same as the options found in Odin. Load the files in Odin as they match with their downloaded counterparts (ie. BL in BL, CP in CP, CSC in CSC and AP in AP) and flash it.
5. Initialize the device afresh and let it boot.
6. Once the phone boots up and you've completed the crappy startup questions, install towelroot (https://towelroot.com) and root your phone. Install supersu and busybox from playstore and install them. Download and install safestrap (http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=7216)
7. Download the pre-rooted OC2 stock rom from here: https://mega.nz/#!qc8QHI6T!_8x88BL-ivTM0yj5uhbmNITernym8HMr2VKJJZB9JeE
8. Download SuperSu zip from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3478515&d=1442612185
9. Download the OC1 Patch firmware from here: https://mega.nz/#!fQ8nSbbA!qzw9IzKf6BzwY0IOHGjGFOmV1QgWoYv-AV4NsjyuiT8
10. Download the OC2 Patch firmware from here: https://mega.nz/#!iF8xBS6Z!XQNgLscWM5SOOddlkunQYBCQp2QO03raEMN91sF1g34
11. Download Xposed framework (optional) from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3454433&d=1440761913
12. Download OC1/OC2 fixes/patches from here (download only the ones you think you'll need): http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/development/8-24-15-t3185574
13. Put all these zips in a single folder either in your internal storage or on your extSD card.
14. Run safestrap and reboot to recovery.
15. In the recovery, go to advanced wipe and factory reset your device.
16. Flash the zips that you've downloaded in steps 7-12 in the following order:-
Flash main ROM
Flash SuperSU
Flash Xposed (optional)
Flash OC1 patch firmware
Flash OC2 patch firmware
Flash OC2 Addons/Fixes
Wipe Dalvik Cache
Reboot
17. It'll take a while to boot since the ROM is de-odexed, give it 15 mins or so, and when it boots, you'll have a rooted OC2 lollipop firmware. Enjoy!

Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time to reply and put this tutorial together for me. Secondly, since I am not experienced with any of this I do have some follow-up questions. My first question is what is Xposed framework exactly and do you recommend it? On step 12 you linked a thread with a plethora of downloads available so could be more specific of which files I particularly need to download in my case? In step 16 how do I flash all of the listed files? By this I mean will I be in something like Recovery or Boot Mode that allows me the option to flash them or what? Also, will there be an option to "Wipe Dalvik Cache" because I am unaware of what that is and how to do that? Sorry for my abundance of questions but again I am new to all of this. Thank you again for all of the help you have allotted thus far.

Please do let me know how it turns out for you because I do very much so want to do all of this but I am still unfamiliar with the majority of the process.
