[Q] Understanding rooting - NovaFusion/CyanogenMod - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm new to rooting and was thinking about spicing up my old NON-ROOTED European version of S3 Mini (as in I8190). I did some research and decided to go with CyanogenMod ROM for the best stability and support. The latest build (11.0) can be downloaded from NovaFusion. The developers offer the following instructions (I'm using a Mac):
You need to download these files:
JOdin3 r1035 for OS X/Linux/Windows: download
Latest Heimdall driver for your OS: download (from official page)
Latest version of ROM for Odin from our download page.
Installed Java (on Mac you can simply install it from AppStore, if you’re Linux owner, Google how to install it on your distribution)
And then perform this steps:
Install downloaded Heimdall drivers. After installation probably you will need to restart your computer.
Unzip downloaded package with latest ROM (if it’s zipped). You should get file with *.tar.md5 extension
Run JOdin3 using Java.
In opened window, click on PDA button and select file with *.tar.md5 extension from previous step
Make sure that only Auto Reboot is selected on the left side.
Turn off your phone, and then use VOL- & HOME & POWER buttons combination.
If you see Warning screen, use VOL+ button.
You should see Android and some information.
Connect phone to computer and make sure it is detected by JOdin (it will appear as COM device). If it doesn’t, try to use other USB port.
Use Start button. JOdin will inform you that no PIT file was attached and ask if it should be downloaded itself. Agree for it. Wait until flash process will finish.
Your phone will restart, but probably won’t boot. Pull down your battery and use VOL+ & HOME & POWER buttons combo to boot into recovery.
Click on Wipe, then use slider on the bottom to let process begin.
Click on Home icon, and then Reboot -> System.
Wait for boot. Now you should have ROM installed and ready to use!
They also suggest this:
For flashing KitKat, we recommend you to install our TWRP recovery (available on Download page)!
My problem: I'm having trouble understanding which part is the "rooting" (which from what I've understood must be done before flashing a ROM) and which part is flashing the CyanogenMod ROM. Does this method include rooting? When should I install the TWRP recovery? Is it the first step to do to an non-rooted device? Is every step of getting a non-rooted S3 Mini to a rooted S3 Mini with CyanogenMOD Kitkat included in these instructions?

Rooting is not required when flashing a rooted ROM via Odin or Heimdall.
Note: CyanogenMod is already rooted.
Note2: Odin or Heimdall is not the only installation method and other methods might require you to be rooted first...

Thank you for clearing this up. What about the TWRP recovery? None of the steps in NovaFusion's instructions include using this file. Do I need it or is it something for another type of flashing method (other than Heimdall/Odin)?

Typically the first thing you want to flash a custom recovery like TWRP via Odin or Heimdall. That allows you to flash things via recovery which gives you and additional option. Not all custom ROM's you find will have and (Odin or Heimdall) option. Most are recovery only; Also most MOD's are recovery only... If you are flashing a custom ROM then I would also flash the custom recovery the ROM creator recommends... :good:
EDIT: Also, recovery gives you the option to make a full backup, which you can restore incase you don't like the ROM..

Understood. So basically after installation of Heimdall I will flash TWRP (and probably do a backup via TWRP) and then continue on with
Unzip downloaded package with latest ROM (if it’s zipped). You should get file with *.tar.md5 extension
Run JOdin3 using Java.
In opened window, click on PDA button and select file with *.tar.md5 extension from previous step
Make sure that only Auto Reboot is selected on the left side.

Click on Wipe, then use slider on the bottom to let process begin.
Click on Home icon, and then Reboot -> System.
Wait for boot. Now you should have ROM installed and ready to use!
Thank you so much for helping me with these beginner's questions!

Ok, below im going to suggest two different ways to accomplish this.
Before you try this, if you are currently on 2.2 you will run into a 3e security error when in recovery. This process must be done from 2.1 or you must use the 3e security work around if attempting from 2.2. Which is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
For me, its easier to use odin and flash back to 2.1 and then load the rom from there than to mess with the whole recovery thing.
How To: Install clockwork recovery.
DOWNLOAD THIS FILE FIRST THEN FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW.
FILE: http://www.mediafire.com/?ve234hbg64ctcu0
1. Go to the download folder and rename clockworkrecovery.zip to update.zip. Mount your phone and drag the update.zip file into the root directory. It is ok to overwrite the update.zip you used before. When it is done copying turn off your phone.
2. Unplug your phone and hold down both volume buttons and the power button until a strange menu with blue items pops up. This is called the recovery menu.
3. Scroll using the volume buttons to the menu item titled "reinstall packages" and press the power button to select.
4. Your phone should restart and you should be at a green menu which is clockwork mod. Do whatever you need to do from here.
Let me say, this is probably an older version of CWM because I pulled it from this thread :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
It should work fine for flashing all 2.2 based roms but I do not have any say for the 2.3 roms as Ive never tried.
2nd way. Use odin to flash a kernel that already has the CWM recovery installed. This is a little more complicated than it sounds as some kernels are not compatible with some roms and you must check that before flashing. If you choose this method, you need to go find a kernel that works and understand how to use Odin before trying.

The easiest to start with CF-Root. CF-Root roots your phone & installs all the necessary stuff for flashing. You will need Odin & possibly a stock rom for your phone. These can be downloaded from http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
Remember always do factory wipe & clear cache before & after flashing. Also make sure to do a back up of your stock rom before flashing anything. Also make a back up of EFS Folder in case your IMEI number is corrupted.
I recommend connecting your phone to your pc after installing CF-Root & copying everything that is on the internal sd card onto your pc.
Instructions in first post. It is long and can be confusing but if you read it carefully it is all quite easy.
Next go here (Team ICSSGS) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1398223
Instructions are in first post of thread. (Below instruction copied from first post of link)
Flashing Instructions
If you are flashing from another rom.
1. Flash ROM(new script should handle coming from any ROM, you also need gingerbread bootloaders)
If you are upgrading from an earlier build.
1. Flash the newest build in CWM.
If you have rebooted and your phone will not go past the kernel screen.
1. Boot into CWM and wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition.
2. Reflash the appropriate kernel.
3. Reboot.
If the flashing procedure didn't quite go to plan, please follow this guide
After this install this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468795
Again all instructions on first post of thread.
http://droidangel.blogspot.com/2012/01/i9000xxjvu-android-236-upgrade-for.html
try that its were i started and ive flashed loads of roms now
Instruction for Flashing new ROM
There are basically 2 methods for flashing a ROM
1. CWM recovery menu mode
2. Download mode.
1. For CWM recovery mode you phone must be rooted with CWM, just put the ROM zip file in sdcard of your phone of your choice. then power off the phone. Then you may want to boot in reovery mode for this use pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume UP + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to recovery mode there just wipe data/factory reset then wipe cache from option then find and select install from sdcard -> chose file zip from sdcard and press power key to selct and start flashing. wait max 5 min and your phone will be booted with new rom of your choice.
2. Boot in to download mode by pressing and holding 3 button combination simultaneaously as Volume down + Home key + Power key now you should be booted in to download mode now connect your phone with PC and open odin in PC then select ROM file as PDA, PHONE & CSC under propoer boxes then click start - wait max 5 min and you phone will be booted in to new rom.

[Q] CWM Manager v3.0 and Root Manager - Couldn't backup Stock ROM

Dear XDA Members and Friends:
I'm excited to be a new XDA member and thank you in advance for your help.
I've recently rooted my Samsung Note using SuperOneClick v2.3.3 method successfully.
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-N7000UBKK2-CL705203
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UBKK2
Baseband Version : N7000UBKK1
But I couldn't backup my stock ROM- Neither by CWM Manager v3.0 nor Via Rom Manager, due to the below reasons:
1) ROM Manager-
When I hit "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery", my phone model is not listed as a choice.
2) CWM Manager v3.0
When I open this for the first time, it throws-
"This version of CWM Manager should be used with CF-Root v5.0 or newer........
Could you please advise me as to how can I backup my stock ROM. So that I venture the world of custom ROMs.
Thanks for your time and help in advance.

CWM Manager works only with CF--Root compatible kernels. So, this is what you can do:
Reboot to recovery by simultaneously pressing volume down + home + power.
Backup your Rom from there (you'll see the option).
THANKS Chasmodo.
I just followed your instructions, and I couldn't figure out. Here is the outcome:
Warning!!
A Custom OS can cuase critical problems in phone and installed applications.
If you want to download a custom OS, press the volume down key.
Otherwise, press the volume down key to cancel.
After Volume up,

Do not turn off target!!
I just removed the battery out to shutdown, as I'm not sure. ( I didn't connect my phone to PC either)...
^ You booted your phone into download mode. Download mode is just used to flash the stock Samsung OS through PC Odin. xD

reboot system now
apply update from sdcard

Are you sure you are rooted. Check your root by installing this app- https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEsImJ1cnJvd3MuYXBwcy5yb290Y2hlY2tlciJd
Also to take backups you require a custom recovery which is included in the CF root kernels like CWM manager. If your phone is coming as not rooted then try rooting again by following the steps mentioned here to the dot - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Cheers!

Thank you All!
First off, let me apologize for hasty typing (volume down instead of volume up).
What you need to do is to flash CF--Root kernel to get CWM Recovery, so your CWM Manager can backup your current situation.
Download InitialCFRootFlasher. ICFRF is a Windoze program.
Download CF--Root Kernel zip.
Extract zimage (that's your kernel file) from the zip.
Place zimage into zimage/ folder of the unpacked InitialCFRootFlasher.
Start already-rooted.bat from InitialCFRootFlasher and follow the instructions.
You'll have flashed CF-Root kernel in cca 5 minutes. You'll also get Superuser, BusyBox and CWM Recovery in the process.

You dont have proper root. You cant write into the system.
Just follow the steps by chasmodo above and you will be golden.
And by Windoze above he means Windows program...wont run on Mac.

Nah...Much as I'm ashamed to admit it, but I missed out on last night's liquid activities.
Thanks Chasmodo and Abhisahara! Hope you had a great weekend!
No need of apology Chasmodo, I understand that it was a typo and what you really meant...
Quick Question:
1) Please confirm that the Kernel CF-Root-SGN_ZS_MUL_KK1-v5.0-CWM5 is the right one for my phone model below:
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-N7000UBKK2-CL705203
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UBKK2
Baseband Version : N7000UBKK1
2) By flashing my device with the above Kernel, does my flash counter will be affected on my device ?
3) With this method how can I be assured that I can backup my original Stock ROM via CWM, I thought CF Root will modify my original ROM/Kernel, isn't ?
Thanks all for the inputs and help.
P.S. BTW, In the interest of consistency, I've unrooted my device using SingleOneClick method, so that I can follow the Chasmodo's method (CF Root) to root my device and backup my Stock ROM.

First off, you didn't have to unroot it. But never mind. My little guide's steps still stand, except for the part
Start already-rooted.bat from InitialCFRootFlasher, you won't be doing this, but
Launch not-rooted-yet.bat instead and follow the instructions
Before you do all this, make sure that you have either Kies or the correct Windows drivers installed on your PC. Kies mustn't be running whilst you're rooting. You can download Kies directly from Samsung, and the standalone Windows drivers can be found in Dr. Ketan's Rom/Rooting thread at the very beginning of the first post.
The kernel I have provided is the right one for your Rom.
To put your mind at ease, rooting your phone will not change anything except the kernel, i.e. the way you can access your phone's functions. All your data, system files and everything else will remain exactly the same as before rooting. And after rooting you can back it all up via CWM Manager, or directly from CWM Recovery. As you say, your Rom will be slightly changed (different kernel), but that's the only way for us to backup our system, flash different Roms, themes etc.
The method I have suggested is tried and tested, and it neither triggers your binary counter, nor gets you the triangle. However, I don't know what's the state of your counter ATM, since you rooted your Note with SuperOneClick. You can check it by rebooting into Download mode - volume down + home + power, then volume up when you get the warning. The next screen will have your Binary Counter in the top left corner. If it says NO, that means that it's still zero. Any other value means that your warranty is probably void.
Thanks much Chasmodo for your continued support and help.
1) Thank GOD, I used your method to verify the binary counter, it looks zero (No), so I'm good on the warranty, right ?
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-N7000
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO
CURRENT BINARY: SAMSUNG OFFICIAL
2) I've used the script "DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su" mentioned by Dr. Ketan on his thread and just rooted my device successfully.
3) I'm now ready to run the "script "already-rooted" from the extracted folder named "InitialCFRootFlasher". This is referred from Dr.Ketan's procedure. This will just get me CF Root/CWM Manager so that I can backup my Stock Rom, But before that, please can you confirm the below ?
(A) While backing up ROM after the above process (step 3), will that backup my original Stock ROM or modified CF Root Stock ROM ?
Chasmodo's response to my earlier question:

No matter what i flash in odin, the result is the same: bootloop

i wonder if there is a way out of a bootloop that works no matter what, as long as you can enter download mode.
after reading for 3 days and flashing everything i could (flashing stock ROM, WIPE_I8190.tar.md5, PARAM_I8190.tar.md5, "LeFreu" I8190 серв. укр) it all gave me the same result: bootloop.
i made a back up before flashing a custom ROM (Dmod V6 and Virginity V3 as they seemed like the best ones) so if any of u help me access CWM recovery or TWRP i could do a restore and make my phone work again.
NOTE: the only way i managed to use CWM recovery the first time was rooting with odin "I8190XXALL2_I8190OXXALL1_HOME_rooted_by_avicohh" and then downloading rom manager from the playstore
the attached screenshot shows my device info from factory, can anyone help me restore my phone?
gimmesansa said:
i need serious help.
i have a galaxy s3 mini gt-i8190 and im stuck on a bootloop
i bought it in new sealed condition and it came with this firmware (see attached screenshot)
and when i tried to update it a window popped saying that my device was modified and that software update were not available.
i decided to root my phone so i could install a new rom.
i downloaded all the software i needed including drivers dor the usb samdung devices and enabled usb debuging in developer options
then i used odin to flash I8190XXALL2_I8190OXXALL1_HOME_rooted_by_avicohh
then i tried flashing custom recovery via odin also
everything went normal but custom recovery was not sticking, meaning no matter what type of custom recovery i flashed (twrp, cwm) i ended up having 3e stock recovery.. (NOTE: the 3e stock recovery before AND after flashing rooted ROM, had always a broken android on the floor with an exclamationg sign in its chest) so i tried another method:
i downloaded root checker from the playstore and rom manager. after checking i was rooted (wich i was) i flashed cwm recovery and succesfully was able tu boot into cwm recovery. i did a back up in both, internal storage and external sd, and procedded to flash Dmod V6. i followed the aroma installer and when it finished i selected reboot system now and got a bootloop.
i entered in cwm recovery and did a restore. did a full wipe (data, cache and dalvik) and tried flashing another rom: virginity ROM. followed the aroma installer and selected reboot system now, the result was bootloop.
when i was trying to do another restore the recovery told me that the system would try to flash stock recovery again and i choosed to keep the cwm recovery.
at this point my phone was able to turn on and boot normally. tried again to flash via cwm the virginity rom and got a bootloop again. so i went to do another restore and this time i choosed diferently (flash stock recovery) and when the restore ended i selected rebbot system now and got a bootloop AGAIN.
now i cannot enter CWM recovery (i guess that is obvious because i choosed to flash stock one)
i have readed 3 days now and tried everything that the forums say: flashing stock firmware, flashing WIPE_I8190.tar.md5, flashing PARAM_I8190.tar.md5 and still ended with a bootloop. tried flashing I8190 серв. укр (LeFleur) and nothing, absolutely nothing works.
i even downloaded Unified_Android_Toolkit_v1.2.8 and tried to flash stock firmware but nothing seems to work. all my phone does is bootloop, and boot into download mode.
can a serious developer help me solve this? im about to give up.... and that seriously affects me because im not a quitter.
any help would be greatly apreciated...

Back to stock

Hy
I see that a lot of people (so did I) had problems of going back to stock, so i wil write a little guide for doing this.
I am not responsibility i anything goes wrong.
Before starting you need the following:
Odin3-v3.07 => you can find it here (CF-Auto-Root)
firmware => http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/
Before we begin, we need two files. The firmware that you have downloaded and also a file rom this firmware called hidden.img.tar.
Open your firmware with winrar and extract the file "hidden.img". When you have this file rename it to "hidden.img.tar"
Now we can really begin
step 1: (optional)
go to recovery (Vol+ & home & Pwr) and wipe your phone.
step 2:
Open Odin as administrator and put your phone in download mode ( Vol - & home & Pwr)
Click on the "AP" button and choose your firmware.
When the firmware is loaded click "start". The firmware will now being flashed on your phone. Most likely you wil get an error after a while when it was flashing the "hidden.img" file (no stress
step 3:
Unplug your phone and reboot it again to download mode (nothing else will work at this point) and connect it again to your PC. In Odin click again on the "AP" button and choose the file that we have created before the "hidden.img.tar" file. When loaded click on "start".
You don't get an error this time and your phone will restart and your phone is being flashed. when your are stuck at a bootloop, go to step 4
step 4:
Put your phone in recovery mode (will look a bit different if you had custom recovery before) and wipe your phone back to factory settings
I hope that this can help other people who where stuck trying to go back to stock
That's a good guide, thank you, worked for me flawlessly.
It might however be good to add: be patient on first boot! It takes ages
Hmm I am not sure. But for me the step 3 was not needed. I did not get error for hidden.img
Is it OK ? I was following your guide did everything as you wrote here till step 3 but during flashing the error was not there
Hope it will be working. Right now it is doing the first boot so waiting and waiting. Hope it will work as I need to return this phone to my older brother who borrow it to me. And I want to give him the phone as it was when he gave it to me.
Hello, i have bought Samsung Galaxy S5 MINI model SM-G800F.
There is Cyanogenmod 12.1-20150707-unofficial-kminilte
android version 5.1.1
baseband (i think) G800FXXU1AOF5
Problem is with MMS - I cant send or receive it thats why
id like to go back to stock rom, but i need few details.
i know how to do it in theory, but first of all, i dont know nothing about what last user have done witch phone, what schould i check to not brick my phone?
in your description is written to download Firmware, tell me pls, which version i have to download, my orginal is (i think) :
PDA/AP Version G800FXXU1AOF5
CSC Version G800FDBT1AOF1
MODEM/CP Version G800FXXU1AOF5
Region DBT — Germany
Build Date 2015-06-29
Changelist 5268468
OS KitKat
OS Version 4.4.2
but this is old kitkat and now i have got version 5.1.1 can i use any rom or that one orginal or only newer or the same version is already installed?
second question i bought this phone from Germany and i live in Poland, can i flash my phone with stock polish version of for example PLAY carrier or i have to do it only witch orginal German stock ROM?
thanks for replay T_M
now i know my model is SM-G800FZKADBT so i can only download rom for this model - yes?
Sorry for pulling this old thread from its grave.
I have wiped my Samsung S5 min (SM-G800F, DBT) completely, i.e. all(!) partitions and also did a "format data", since no data worth to keep were on it. Then I started Odin as admin, placed the official latest Samsung FW (G800FXXU1CRG3_G800FDBT1CRE1_G800FXXU1CRG3_HOME.tar.md5) in the "AP" field, had only "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" under "Options" ticked, and nothing under "Pit". The flashing worked without errors and the S5 mini rebooted. The "SAMSUNG" logo was blinking for about 10 minutes, but I was already warned that this first boot may really take a while. Finally, the device successfully booted into regular/stock system.
Now my questions:
So far, have I done everything right to go back to stock? I have not tampered with a "hidden.img" or "hidden.img.tar" file, hence this question.
Next, I would like to flash the latest official TWRP. Is it right to put "twrp-3.3.1-0-kminilte.img.tar" in the "AP" field of Odin (as before for the stock FW) and flash it? I would this time not select "Auto Reboot", but instead after successful flashing, plug the USB cable, remove the battery, place it back, and start the S5 mini (SM-G500F) to recovery by holding power + home + volume up. Correct?
Finally, I would lake to have Magisk. Is it right to place the official "Magisk-v20.2.zip" on the external SD card (oh, I wiped that before, too) and to flash it from recovery (TWRP) and then reboot the device to system?
Do I have to enable the developer options and (also?) ADB debugging for any of the aforementioned steps?
Thanks a lot for your helpful hints.
PS:
Stock worked nicely. Then I enabled developer options, ADB debugging, and flashed 1. TWRP (step 2 above) and 2. Magisk (step 3 above). Booting to system took much longer while a message about Android being started and App No. x of y being optimized. Since stock ROM contains tons of crappy apps, this took quite a while. I wonder why now (after flashing TWRP and Magisk) the system sees the need to optimise apps. Ah, is it because I also wiped cache and dalvik cache from TWRP after flashing Magisk? Maybe this was not needed, I dunno...
