I have tried messing with this for the past few hours. Maybe its my phone...I decided that I want to flash a new ROM, which I have done with other phones in the past easily. Anyway, my computer (windows7) will not see this phone in any sense. Once upon a time KEIS was able to see it as a mass storage, but that was it. So I have been reading multiple threads and tried it all:
-removed all home apps and went back to touchwiz
-debugging mode on/off, mass storage/select upon connect
-uninstalled/reinstalled the correct 64 bit driver 3 times
-tried 2 different USB cables, in multiple USB motherboard slots
Whats wierd is that I AM able to sideload APK files with the wondermachine, and I successfully rooted my phone with one click. I also installed Droid Explorer, which sees the phone, but doesn't see any of the files on the phone itself. I am able to screen cast, and see the CPU things running, but I cant see or manipulate any files at all. Naturally I used TI backup to backup all my files so I can copy the backup to my computer and flash a ROM, but I cant get files from the phone or move files to the phone to flash. Any thoughts???
Thanks!
Is this occurring on the stock rom too? I'd recommend u try this. And if its working on stock, could the case of a bad flash of ur custom rom.
I havent been able to flash any rom because I can move files. Its on the stock ATT rom with the over the air update.
You do not need to be able to move files in order to flash, but I would make sure you can get odin to recognize your device.
I do nearly everything from my phone, only hook up to pc when using odin, which I barely do.
Dl astro file manager, go into settings, enable dl from browser
Step 1: Check the build of ur phone if its 10.10 or later. Odin 1 click does not work on 10.10 and later builds. There is a different process for that.
All this below is considering u have a build 10.09 or earlier phone.
Step 2: Get it into download mode, and see if the computer detects it. I would recommend doing this first to make sure.
To do this:
1. Disconnect phone
2. Get the phone to download mode
3. Open Odin one click
4. Connect the phone
5. Flash to stock
See if the issue still persists. If no, then download another ROM and happy flashing.
If it doesn't, well, I do not know what to say at this point but to go in for a warranty exchange. Maybe others here may be able to help better.
Thanks for the quick responses, please delete thread.
I currently have a botched version of Froyo 2.2. And I have been having troubles with everything i've tried. I followed this video to a T http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDtxnH4lFuk and ODIN keeps giving me problems. It will not detect and add my phone thats it. Can someone please help me, and if you need additional info on my phone just let me know. Please help me i'd like to revert to eclair and update the offical 2.2 atNt update to my phone. Thats all I want to do. Also Im running Cognition 3.04 and kernal 2.6.32.9. I tried to use the Kies update but it says my phone can not be updated. Please help me! And my phone is rooted.
Have you tried multiple USB ports
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
If other USB ports do not work, and if your Captivate build number is 1009 or lower (you can find this number underneath where your battery is, on the actual phone itself), then try this method:
Also, make sure you know how to go to Download Mode, and that you have the drivers installed properly.
This is the manual (or "full") Odin, it's taken from a post by icezar1 in the Development Forum:
Do not use this if you want to send your phone back to ATT or Samsung for warranty!
Do not use this if you know you flashed a -LOW- ODIN package (when opening the PDA***.tar or CODE***.tar you will find inside boot.bin or sbl.bin)
Use this if you want to go back to stock before flashing a custom ROM.
Use this without worries if you changed your boot screen image or if you flashed the secondary boot loader which allows you to enter download/recovery with key combos.
Download the package from here
Download the phone drivers from DG's thread if you dont have them already. [Note: You should already have this xpiamchris, it will be the same one I asked you to download and install]
How to:
Remove sdcard and SIM card from the phone
Extract JF6_secure.zip somewhere.
Boot your phone in Download Mode
Run Odin3 v1.3.exe
Plug in your phone via USB
Click on the button PDA
Choose JF6_secure.tar.md5
Click start
Wait and do not unplug cable until it is finished
Yes I have, could it be because i, on an old computer running windows xp with usb version 1?
I did everything you said, and still nothing, Odin didnt even read my phone when I plugged it in. My phone was set with debugging on, and in download mode. I extracted the JF6_secure.zip to my phone and the Odin folder im using to do this, because I was not sure were you wanted it. And still nothing.
Try a different USB port. Reinstall the drivers as well.

usb 1.. maybe.. drivers might have a hardware requirement for 1.1 or 2.0 and up.

you extract to the computer anywhere, use odin to find the file anywhere on your pc. you dont need it on the phone.
Okay I got odin to read my phone (COM3) phone was in download mode, debug mode, and the program ran for awhile, looked like it was going to work and that it failed. What could I possible be missing? I have the current Captivate drivers, the SDK files, and the adb files. This had been going on for two days now and all i want is to go back to original eclair firmware. I appreciate you guys helping me by the way. We will get this eventually If I want to just say screw this and install serendipity, how would I do that? Currently I have cognition 3.0.4 or another...would I still have to reflash my phone so cognition is off?
It'll be the "best" idea to.
But most good ROMs (I'm sure Serendipity would), do a wipe of themselves before the install anyway.
If going back to stock is giving you this much grief, might as well try to get on to Serendipity (personally for me anyway).
And sorry im such a noob but one question, how do I install serindipity? Do I put in on my phone, boot to recovery, seclect the serendipity file and install? Thats it i dont have to delete cognition or anything??? I also have clockwork if that helps any. Which drivers are you referring too as well? I know there is drivers for the phone and google usb.
Yep, that's exactly how you do it. You might want to back up your stuff using Titanium Backup though.
Thank so much. I will do that and post on here how it goes you are a tremendous help Venom.
No problemo, anyone here would've done the same...
And good luck!
One more noob question do I have to rename the serendipity.zip to update.zip?
No, keep it as the normal filename. In CWM Recovery, there should be an option where it says "install .zip from sdcard" (or something like that). Then select "choose zip from sdcard". From there, you can choose the .zip to install (it will list all .zip in your sdcard).
Thanks for all your help going to try it now, can you give me some Thanks i know i didnt do anything for you but i just want a few lol...i gave you a thanks on all your posts
I have a question just found a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzDb6m7sQ7A&feature=related and it says to dial this number (*2767*3855#) with out the ()'s to restore my phone to factory, i havnt tried it but does seem like a good idea or not?
You can do that if you want, but be reminded that EVERYTHING will be wiped out. Including your root access, etc.
Will i be able to re-root it again though??
Yeah sure, no reason you shouldn't be able to. But I'm not sure what base ROM your version of Cognition is running... Might get a bit weird/confusing.
I did bad, bad things to my I9000.
I wanted to install MIUI RC3 on my phone, and now:
I can't enter download mode, even through adb, please read below:
1. flashed XXJP1 Froyo
2. After that 3BR stopped working
3. I PANICKED!
4. Started reading, and I used ADB to enter Download Mode
5. Being stupid, instead of flashing the 3BR tar.md5, I went forward with installing galaxy_efsbackup.zip.
6. After this ADB wouldn't show my device anymore, so no more adb reboot download
7. I panicked AGAIN
8. I installed the Nexus S usb drivers, given the fact that's what galaxy_efsbackup does ....
9. ADB sees my device now, with other identifier, but when I enter adb reboot download it justs REBOOTS and shows the Galaxy S CyanogenMOD.
I am totally clueless now, I tried to find a NV_data.bin to flash to EFS, but I can't find anything, are there other metods to do this, OR have I bricked my phone? PANIC
I am guessing reboot download mode isn't working anymore because the adb is sending the command for nexus s ..... totally f**ked up this time.
Mentions:
I did the 3BR FIX last year and it worked, I have tried the last weeks to install MIUI but didn't succeded, I wasn't installing the correct froyo version. Did XXJP1 messed up my 3BR?
Can I somehow flash the 3BR Sbl.bin&boot.bin from ADB to my phone? I read a lot but can't find anything relevant,
Unbrick route always works for me .
Via Odin flash Eclair with pit 512 and repartition checked for me .
Boots ok upgrade to Froyo no pit no partition checked .

You do not understand me, Cyanogen's EFS maakes my phone be recognized as a Nexus S, and the ADB reboot download doesn't work anymore, neither the 3BR.
How can I flash a zip file under ADB on Galaxy S .... I searched for hours, found only bogus info.
Would this not work?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
I haven't gotten there yet, I will try it on monday all the shops are closed today, I'm gonna go berserk till monday.
A friend of mine has A working MIUI on his phone, could I clone his entire internal data and push it to mine? Same phone, same carrier, etc...?

I understand you broke your phone i posted a method that may recover .
You should already know about the recovery jig before flashing a phone i presumed .

Similar problem here, following same tutorial and after flashing same XXJP1 rom. I guess we have a beautiful paperweight now
XXJP1 has the SPL and bootloader without the 3BR, Of course I found out after flashing it, the tutorial is posted on MIUI post page but the guy who wrote the tuorial forgbot to mention that the froyo default ROM will mess up all the GalaxyS phones with the 3BR hack....
@JJEgan: I wrote in the first post that I am way beyond flashing with Odin . Nonetheless, thanks for the input!
Apparently I have no other options, JIG MicroUSB it is then. No phone 'till monday for me :|
LE: "Unbrick route always works for me ." - now I understood what you mean by that , my bad, sorry!
Ok, finally I had to build a JIG which I made with the oficial samsung usb cable but it worked. Now I flashed another froyo rom, and I can access recovery mode with apps like clockworkmod or quickboot, but not with the 3-key combination. I'll have to work a little more to get it ready to rock again, but It's better than nothing
Indeed, I also tried to make a cable, I broke some old radio and took a 100ohm + 200ohm (5% tolerance) resistors, I couldn't use my microusb because I have only one, and I tried to touch the 4&5 pin with two very thin wires, but I think the thin wires, have even lower resistance, thus not working, drat! I hate being without my phone till monday ).
I also tried doing it without the usb, with no success. Take care about the values, you should try to get 300k, not 300. To make you feel better, I'll tell you that I had to broke 3 cables (car charger, nokia data, and the samsung) and only the last of them worked. I was in worst possible scenario (I didn't convert the filesystem back to rfs before flashing, couldn't even see the big "S"... stucked at the first screen) I only got that weid and useless "forced upload by key pressing" screen (Odin recognized the device at that stage, but couldn't flash)
Good luck!
So lately i have been having a ridiculous amount of issues on my phone. RAM was constantly used up it kicked me out of programs all the time, battery sucked, itd be laggy and jumpy power button stopped working etc. so last night i decided screw it i was sick of it and i was just going to start fresh so first i just did the system reset or whatever on the phone.
Now heres the problem, after the reset i turn the phone on it boots up and goes to the tutorial, when i either skip the tutorial or finish it i get an error message saying the tutorial isnt working properly and asking to force close. so i close it and then all i get is a black screen with the clock on the top. Not of the buttons on it work and it wont do anything but pull down the menu.
ive tried the odin 1 click master clear but it and my computer wont recognize the phone along with me putting it into download mode and trying to flash to stock. Odin doesnt see it and my computer says the drivers are broken and it wont recognize the device.
I re-installed all the drivers but the same results occur. I did however manage to have my computer see it when i put it in samsung keis mode (can still choose that from the drop down menu when i plug it in) however i dont know if that will help anything.
So any and all help will be greatly welcomed as i now am without a phone and need it very soon. Thanks

If Odin isn't being friendly to your phone, try using Heimdall. You can get all the same things you need from Odin, but it's a different set of drivers and a different program, which might solve your issues.
If you need one, here's a Heimdall One-click to stock Froyo that AdamOutler made. It's really easy to use - just download it, let it install, and click flash.
alright ill try it and see how it goes thanks a lot
no luck. Heimdall doesnt recognize it connected and my computer still says it wont recognize it so im guessing thats the main issue first...

If you haven't already, try turning your phone and computer off. Then reboot the computer and let it settle. Once it's all set up, move your USB cable to a port at the back of the computer (or somewhere else on the computer if it's a laptop).
Once you've done that, start up Heimdall. Once it's up and settled, start up your phone in download mode, then hook up the phone.
both have been restarted a couple times but ill try that again. i grabbed a different usb cable as well. this time it allowed heimdall to recognize the device at first but when i started it said no drivers and it i followed the instructions it said after however the options heimdall said werent available. im confused why it would so no drivers as i just reinstalled them and when i plugged the phone in for heimdall it said drivers installed.
but no at the end of trying a couple times the device is back to unrecognized and heimdall cant see it

Heimdall uses a different set of drivers (libusb) instead of the ones that samsung provides. I would suggest that you go ahead and uninstall the Heimdall drivers as well as the samsung drivers, reboot the computer, and run Heimdall again. Let it finish installing the drivers and be ready, then reboot one more time and try again.
eventually got it working and got it back to stock 2.2 however my 3g isnt working and when i try to run the update on the phone to gingerbread it wont connect to att. i thought maybe i could just flash up to gingerbread but when i put it in download mode and connect it odin still doesnt recognize it and this was after rebooting both

If you were able to get it to work with Heimdall, and you're wanting to go to stock GB, I would suggest using Adam's UCKH3 Heimdall One-click. This will flash stock AT&T Gingerbread (well.. technically that doesn't exist yet, but..) and the i897 Gingerbread bootloaders at the same time.
Just make sure you have all your important stuff backed up to something that isn't your phone before you do it, and that you have a good connection between your computer and phone.
well that one worked so thanks but still no 3g or any data connection

Just to check, make sure your IMEI matches the one on your phone.
To do this (assuming you're on AT&T), go to the dialer and type *#06#.
Write down that number, then open your battery case.
Take out the battery, and look on the sticker with the barcode. Above the first barcode should be your phone's IMEI. Double check to make sure those match.
If not, you may have some issues with the contents of your /efs folder.
nvm i figured it out. had to reset the access points or whatever to default. now onto to re rooting. thanks for all the help. know anything about the power button not working? i thought it mighta just been the software before but its still not working. do fixes exist? because i really hate using AnyLock to use my phone.

hey just wanted to thank you for helpin me out all day. that last heimdall gb helped me about immensely. ive finally been able to install some custom roms and what not successfully. i used to follow every direction super close and nothing ever worked but finally going my way so thanks a bunch ha
Hi so I was trying to use CF to root my phone and ended up screwing it somehow and bricked. I thought I'd followed the instructions well enough but I obviously did something wrong. Now my phone is stuck saying it needs to recover with Kies. This is my first Samsung phone but I'm not new to Android.
I tried installing the stock firmware through ODIN but everytime I flash it gets to installing the system ext4 and fails. I also wasn't able to recover using Kies(not even sure how you use it tbh).
If anyone could help me it would be mucho appreciated. I'm pretty pissed at myself right now.

Your phone is NOT bricked. If it was the screen would not even go on.
Have you tried going into recovery mode (VolumeUP/VolDown/PowerButton)
and once in Recovery Mode do a factory reset or Data Reset forgot what the
exact wording is in the stock recovery.
If you flashed twrp recovery it's ok too, just select "factory reset".
After doing that the phone should no longer display anything about Kies.
If you get to the twrp recovery screen you should be able to flash a stock
rooted rom without any issues.
If all you get is the stock recovery screen then you should be able to odin
flash the official Samsung Note 4 kitkat 4.4.4 NJ7 firmware which you may
need to download the firmware from http://SamMobile.com if you don't
already have it. (be sure you have the correct firmware for the Note 4 N910T).
Be 100% sure that the phone is FULLY POWERED DOWN before going
into Download Mode to avoid odin errors and issues.
Good luck!
Thanks man. I had tried Odin at my office and nothing doing.
Got home took my time and was real calm about things and voila. May have been an md5 issue with the firmware file. Just relieved I didn't have to RMA it.

Can you check for the file with md5 before you flash from your phone? I forgot where to dig for this info.
All I I have done before is on my cook rom file, I just open it with WinRAR and test for error. If no error, then its good.
On my Home PC I have a program that will put a check mark next to a file if it matches the md5. I also have Winrar at home.
I was just using the default Windows zip program and I have had problems with that and installers/roms in the past.
The only other things I did different were I removed the SD card and installed the drivers before plugging my phone in instead of letting Windows download them automatically.
I also removed the battery after I left work so it was out of the phone for a couple of hours.
The final thing I did was calm down lol after the initial shock of seeing a softbricked screen on my brand new phone.
I'm all rooted now with TWRP and running Hyperdrive so it's all smooth sailing from this point forward.
You should check md5 on phone once you done transferred to phone from PC
