So the Gear VR SDK has been released here: https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/
It includes APKs for Oculus' Cinema, 360 videos and 360 photos apps and the source code for all of them. This is all apparently only comparable with the Note 4, so if anyone can test and report back if they can get it working with Cardboard and so on that'd be great
Big question for me is device support - tried installing the APKs to my Nexus 5 - they crashed upon startup (probably because I'm on Lollipop). If anyone can try get these, especially the cinema, working, that'd be fantastic

All the apks installed but it wont run without the gear vr. Each app just brings up the vr manager.

Would be great if someone could get them working on Cardboard
Cheers, well....seeing as the source for all 3 apps is in the SDK, maybe someone can build a version from the ground up that does not require the Gear VR/bypasses the Gear VR Manager?
Also in the Cinema app, the only scene that's available is the default home theater, so no big theatre, IMAX or moon layouts yet...people can build their own though.
Screen shots of the video included.

So you dont have a Note 4, don't want to get a Gear VR but want their work for low anyway eh?
There are already VR cinemas for Google Cardboard like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xsYwOEgrNo
And now leave our Gear VR Cinema alone, don't steal it

Hey i have a galaxy Note 4 but the Gear VR is nowhere to be found in France...
Maybe December...but probably january or even later...
Anyway, i would to welcome any headstart even if it means to use it in some google cardboard VR kind
Bumping because I came across a version of Oculus Cinema that actually starts up and everything on my Nexus 5...
http://apk-s.store.aptoide.com/app/market/com.oculus.cinema/308/8408322/Oculus Cinema
This is where I get to on my Nexus:
Now the next step would be getting the controls (apparently they work through mouse via bluetooth?) and the head tracking to work internally as opposed to through an external tracker like Gear VR or OpenGear http://www.open-gear.com/
So I got the Gear VR today. It's ****ing amazing.... So next step. How do I get this to mirror my pc so that I can use it to play apps set up for the Oculus Rift from my computer? Any ideas where to start? Must see Hawken...

I think for now there is no good solution yet because of too high latency for VR. But if you want to watch your own 2D/3D/360° movies you can just put them on the SD card of the Note 4 to watch in Gear VR.

It works. But it's a method of screen mirroring to your device. Apparently there are some quirks that need to be worked out to get it fully operational. It requires an additional app for head tracking. Plus you need to basically mod every pc program you want to use to support what is essentially a false HMD. I'm still working on it.

I've also noticed a lot of latency issues with a lot of apps meant for cardboard versus the gear vr apps. Basically anything meant for cardboard is "ok" as far as head tracking goes. But the gear apps are nearly perfect. (you can use cardboard apps by sliding the phone into place while holding the usb connection tilted so it doesn't quite connect) As an example, I tried Vanguard V before it was released for gear using the cardboard version. The tracking lag was irritating to say the least. But when I tried the gear version, the tracking was perfect. This makes me hesitant on how well this will work in general. Though some of them are hit or miss on tracking. A few are almost as good as the gear vr stuff. Almost. I think the Gear VR headset may have additional tracking sensors built into it. After all, it says "mouse disconnected" when you remove the handset from the headset.
I think there is gyro in headset itself. There is folder called oculus in phone storage with "gyrocalibration" file inside

That also could be calibration on the phone gyro.

hi friends. i am using Indian Note 4. i bought the Gear VR from Australia. initially i had lots of doubts regarding Device compatibility, as in India this kind of technology is very new and there won't be enough sources to help me in ease. so i decided to gather information from US, UK, Australia(currently Gear VR released in these places only). and i would like to share these with you all. especially to my fellow Indians.
First.
1. Gear VR (US,UK,Australia) Supports Indian Note 4(Lollipop). but prefer Australian model because it has the same model (SM-N910G)
2. Gear VR does not Shows videos is Full HD...not even 720P. it comes roughly around 480P but worth experiencing.
3. As Milk VR is only limited for US, i tried using it by faking my VPN. i tried with Hola App from play store. changed the region to US and Milk VR supports now.(No need of ROOT). but to use Milk VR in Gear VR, u need hola app to run in background which leads me to connect with Wifi or mobile network whenever i'm into Milk VR.
4. i am still trying to find a way to play 360 videos available in Youtube, but there are lot of 360 videos to download from various sites. i prefer airpano.com (Using IDM i am able download those videos and play it in Gear VR). Ultra HD 360 videos are not supported.
5. Gear VR has support to play all your mobile videos and photos. MP4 has support, but MKV is not supporting.
6. Mobile gets heated pretty quick while playing games. which leads me to remove my VR to cool down.
7. Battery Charge is reduced depending upon what you are watching. for movies it lasts for more than an hour, for games 20min max.
8. Gear VR can play all cardboard apps from Google Play Store but you need to attach the mobile without plugging the USB port.
9. Gear VR can be used to Play Porn Videos in 360. but still it is hard to find free videos. virtualrealporn.com has 360 and 180 videos but all are paid ones.
10. Most important thing. Back up all the contents available in the memory card came along with Gear VR. if you are using CCleaner app, it deletes all the contents. u can copy paste all the contents to your existing memory card. but remember it should be pasted in the root folder of your SD card.
That's all for now. please share your ideas and contents if you have anything to offer. Thanks.

Hey Vijay,
Thanks a lot for your valuable info. Had a lot of doubts regarding the compatibility issues with indian note 4. Saw your post and ordered through my cousin who came from the US last week. Glad to tell you that it works like a charm. The device just blows you away. It is an instant hit with all my family and friends. Its fun to watch other people tripping on it.:victory:
The Hola app is very useful for surfing content on the Milk vr.
The only issue I'm facing is the overheating problem. It works for about 20 min till I have to remove it for cooling it down.
Thanks Vijay,
Wouldn't have got this gem of a device if it wasn't for your post.
Cheers!!!

I got the Gear VR for the note 4 from USA.
issue is that , when I try to download the firmware for the phone(after connecting it to the Gear VR). It keeps failing with a "network error".
Do I need to be running on a specific kernel or the stock kernel should be sufficient (I have the Indian snapdragon note 4)

Thanks for sharing the information mate, i am also from India, samsung has released Consumer version of the gear vr today, any Idea if it would be compatible with samsung s6 edge+ which i have bought here in India, does it require any specific software update which will not be available in India?
Thanks
Yes it is compatible with s6 edge +
Okay, so I've done a fair amount of looking around and since I was unable to come up with any information on how to do this, it's likely not possible. First thing, I admit I have yet to receive my promotional Gear VR from purchasing a Galaxy S7 Edge on a pre-order. I have just been trying to figure out what the VR is capable of doing. In particular I've been trying to figure out if it was possible to play games like Walking War Robots or Modern Combat 5 with the Gear VR. Had anybody had any luck with playing any NON-VR games with their Gear VR? I understand that it would be quite unlikely to have the software render these games in true 3D, but I'm more-or-less trying to find a way to play a standard game in a split screen view so it just looks like a large screen in front of my face. I don't think it would be too hard to take the original video output of a game and double it up in split screen for it to be used like this, but I'm no programmer, and wouldn't know where to begin. I would use my phone with an MHL adapter but I've been told it isn't compatible, but that's for another forum topic. If anyone has any info on any of this I'd appreciate it if you could get back to me. If this hasn't been done yet, but is possible, some developer could potentially make a lot of money making an app that would split the video output of a standard game. Thanks in advance to anyone who has any info on doing this.
Yes i'm also interested in this post. When you can only play normal non-vr games in 2D It's enough.
Holy word-wrap Batman. Sorry, your post was very hard to read without spaces but I will read slowly and try again (not to be jerk but it was honestly hard to read).
Okay, so you CAN play non-VR games with the Gear VR but it involves a few different things.
First off, you need a decent PC and a good bandwidth connection to stream to the phone.
Second, there are softwares out there that will turn your games into 3D - the most inclusive one is TrinusVR <---very easy to use, the harder one is Tridef 3D but the results are nicer graphically.
Third, it becomes hard to control with the Gear VR, so it really depends on what the game is and what support there is.
If you have Stream Theatre via the SideloadVR App, try that out. You need Steam on your computer as well. Pair that up with head-tracking such as FacetrackNoIR or Opentrack, you should be set

Thanks for this answer but I think we mean play non-vr android games or apps from our phone on the gear vr. So Normal apps which are already on the phone. When it's only 2D it's enough. Sort of second screen in front of your face. For example I've PlayStation remote app on my phone so when I can start that one up with the gear vr I can play my PlayStation

Yes, that would be very cool if there was a way but if you think about it from a technical perspective, you are changing the game resolution on the phone to split into two screens vs. streaming content which is easier to split into Side-by-side.
I will still keep hope, though! I know there is a way to play Android games on your phone...lol that would be too complicated:
Android -> to PC->stream back to phone in 3D

This is how
I have been playing emulator games in VR since yesterday (legend of dragoon, ff9), and even watched a little vr porn.
You need to get PACKAGE DISABLER PRO. It does cost $1.95, but its more than worth it. I registered just to post this so i cant link yet
Disable gear vr service, then you can do whatever you want in VR. This requires no root. Also apps that work with cardboard can work with hear vr. So in my case epsxe emulator has cardboard support, which means gear vr Support
Thank me later like drake

Seems you missed the point of my original post. I realize I can port PC games to my phone for VR use, but I want to play games that are meant for android on my gear in the original format, just split screen for the image of a large screen directly in front of me. And what we're you talking about word-wrap? There's clearly a space between all of my words. Shall I double space for you next time?

My apologies for misunderstanding, that native SBS app seems worthy but have not tried it with a rooted device yet. As for your word-space issue, I did not see any paragraphs so the sentences were hard to read. Good luck.
Hi, I just got the Note 9 alongside the gear vr and as much as I am enjoying the oculus experience there's a few things I would like to do that are only accessible through daydream.
I looked through a certain amount of videos and forums, but they seemed to be outdated as the methods enabling me to do it, aren't available anymore.(or there's one but it involves paying on playstore for an app that looks dubious for my view).
Does anyone know any way that I could enjoy daydream with the Gear VR?
